Guides celebrate 100 years Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

In less than two weeks more than 400 Sparks, Brownies, Guides, Path Finders, Rangers and volunteers will be converging on the valley to mark 100 years of Girl Guiding in Canada. Drumheller is one of 11 other sites in Alberta hosting a rally to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Guiding in Canada on Saturday, May 15. Spark leader Donna Thompson, who, along with Noella Brisebois, is helping to organize the event, is excited. “It has been an awesome challenge,” she said. "I am so looking forward to being a part of this celebration. 100 years and still going strong." The Guiding movement began in 1909 when a troop of girls came to a enormous Boy Scout rally. They spoke to Lord Baden-Powell asking him to allow girls to be Scouts. This impressed him, and his sister Agnes Baden-Powell began building the program. By 1910, the movement has spread to Canada, and by 1912, there were units in every province. On Saturday, May 15 girls involved in guiding from High River, Calgary, Chestermere, Strathmore, Airdrie, Drumheller and Hanna will be taking part in the celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Drumheller and District Stampede and Ag Society. Thompson said they have all kinds of activities planned. Following an opening ceremony, there will be stations with all kinds of learning activities, both indoors and outdoors. They will also be holding a food drive and campﬁre activities. Thompson said the older girls will be heading to downtown Drumheller, and one of the activities is to paint one of the dinosaurs together. They will be assisted by Trish Parker of Communities in Bloom. They will also participate in a walking scavenger hunt throughout downtown Drumheller before returning for closing ceremonies.

Thompson explains they committed to hosting the celebration before Christmas and have been planning ever since. “We were so thrilled to say we would host it,” said Thompson. She is proud to be part of one the world's largest allfemale organizations and sees the program as ﬁlling a worthwhile role in the lives of young girls. “It’s about teaching girls who they are and where they want to go,” said Thompson. “We give to them so they can progress throughout their lifetime.” She says it is rewarding to see the young adults the girls have progressed into becoming. “It’s an honour to be part of it,” said Thompson. My question concerns arthritis and kidney health. I have osteoarthritis, but I cannot take many medications because I have kidney problems. Is there any treatment I could try that would not affect my kidneys?

The first line treatment choice for osteoarthritis (OA) is actually Tylenol (acetaminophen) which is not harmful to the kidneys and is available over the counter without a prescription. You may notice the most benefit from this medication if you take 2 tablets of extra strength (500mg) acetaminophen every 4 to 6 hours around the clock, but be careful not to exceed 8 tablets per 24 hours. There is also a Tylenol Arthritis product available that is 650mg tablets with the instructions take 2 tablets every 8 hours, not to exceed 6 tablets per 24 hours. The Tylenol Arthritis is an extended release version and is a good option because you can take 2 less pills per day and still maintain a constant level of pain control. As for other treatment options for OA, most do affect the kidneys in one way or another. It would then depend on the specifics of your kidney problems and severity of your OA as to whether other treatments could be tried. It becomes a question of risk versus benefit – does the benefit you could receive from your OA medications outweigh the potential risk to your kidneys – which is something to be discussed on an individual basis.

The wintery blast from Mother Nature couldn’t stop the support Drumheller residents showed for McHappy Day on Wednesday, May 5. From opening to close, a steady stream of customers graced both Drumheller McDonald’s locations supporting the cause. In all, Drumheller’s McHappy Day raised $5,100. This was up almost $1,500 over last year’s total. This year McHappy Day in Drumheller beneﬁtted Ronald McDonald House of Alberta and the St. Anthony’s School Playground fund. “It’s a great community we live in, and we love the fact that people come out and support these causes,” said Ed Mah, owner of Drumheller

McDonald’s. “We’ve had a great turnout.” To raise funds for the charities, McDonald’s donated $1 from each McMuffin, Big Mac or Happy Meal sold to the cause. Winnifred Sarah Hunter passed away in Drumheller, Alberta on Wednesday, the 5th of May, 2010 at the age of 93. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Winnie married George Bryson Hunter and together reared a family of nine children in Drumheller. She was well known for her quick wit, bluenose expressions, sense of humour, spirited manner and capacity to enjoy life. She was born in Drumheller on March 28, 1917 to the late William Everett and Winnifred Rachel Clarke. She was educated in the Nose Hills area, Midlandvale and Drumheller. She obtained a diploma in beauty culture and practiced in Drumheller in her younger years and taught kindergarten in her later years. Winnie was a member of the Knox United Church and Unit 8 UCW and a member of the lively volunteer hairdressers who served the Sunshine Lodge and Auxillary Hospital for 24 years. She served as matron for the RCMP and also was a chaperone at the Composite High School dormitory. Winnie was predeceased by her husband George Bryson in 1992; daughter Darlene; sons Alexander (Ruth) and Tomas. She is survived by her children: Margaret (Albert) Barrie of Drumheller; Bill (Lorraine) of Calgary; Grace Hanson of Brooks; Jeanne Safronovich (Steve) of Brooks, Carol Hunter of Calgary; Jim (Sharron) of Port Moody B.C. and daughter-in-law Ruth (Alex) of Calgary. Winnie was the last surviving member of the original Clarke family. She was predeceased by her sisters Mary McIntyre (Ian) of Drumheller and Gladys Guse (Dave) of Coronation; and brothers, Don (Anne Gammie) of Drumheller, Howard (Doris) of Red Deer and Lloyd (Elaine) of Calgary. She was predeceased by sisters-in-law, Millie Mitchell of Calgary and Lucy Clarke of Stettler and survived by sisters-in-law, Pat (Effie) Vansen of Drumheller, Florence Hunter of Edmonton and Doris Clarke of U.S.A. Left to carry on Winnie’s legacy are 25 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Services to be held at Knox United Church in Drumheller at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 12, 2010. No flowers please. A local customer has taken the Town of Drumheller to the Alberta Utilities Commission to appeal water and sewer rate charges. InSide Drumheller has received a Notice of Hearing from the commission outlining the reason for the hearing and inviting others with an opinion about the case to submit a statement of intent to participate in a hearing slated for June 22. “The applicant has indicated that the rate charged for water and sewer to the applicant since January 2010 pursuant to the Town of Drumheller bylaws, including Bylaw 07-10 have been improperly imposed and are discriminatory,” states the notice.

The application falls under Section 43 of the Municipal Government Act, which allows a customers to appeal service charges, rates or tolls of a municipality for utility rates to the commission. The notice, appearing on Page 9 of Inside Drumheller, has speciﬁc instructions for those with concerns, objections, or support for the application, on how they must submit a Statement of Intent to participate. According to its website, one of the responsibilities of the Alberta Utilities Commission is to regulate “investor-owned electric, gas and water utilities, and some municipally owned electric utilities, making certain that Albertans receive safe and reliable utility service at just and reasonable rates. The AUC also oversees the tolls, tariﬀs and service regulations of energy transmission through natural gas pipelines and electric transmission lines.”

Cenovus took some time on Thursday, May 6, to recognize local service companies with its annual Safety and Stewardship Awards. This presentation took place at the Drumheller Inn following a luncheon, and it was the ﬁrst time the awards

St. Anthony’s School celebrated 50 years of history and the promise of the future last weekend. This year marks a half century of Catholic education in Drumheller, and the school body, along with hundreds in the community that have been involved with the school celebrated all weekend. On Friday afternoon the school hosted a mass, followed by a family barbecue. All kinds of festivities took place including face painting, a performance by the Russell Brothers, and dozens of displays showing oﬀ the artistic and scholastic achievements of the students, as well as the living history of the school. Sue Backs, vice chair of the school council, said she was overwhelmed by the generosity of the community supporting these events. At the barbecue, they unveiled two cakes: one with the present school and one with an image of the future school that is slated to be completed in 2011. The party didn’t stop. On Saturday evening the school hosted a dinner and dance. The Drive by Shout Outs entertained the approximately 110 that came out for the

event. Backs said there were students from as far back as the ﬁrst class at the school, faculty and representation Christ the Redeemer School Division. In fact, the current school division board chair Vijay Domingo, who was in attendance, was a former St. Anthony’s student. The celebration didn’t end on Saturday night, as Sun-

day morning the Knights of Columbus hosted a pancake breakfast and Backs tells inSide Drumheller it was very well attended. Backs said the weekend of festivities outlines the importance of the school, not only the students that have studied at the institution, but the whole community.

May is the month of author visits at The Drumheller Public Library. They are hosting three visits, on May 8, 11, and 18. The ﬁrst one is with Mr Gem Munro, author of South Asian Adventures with the Active Poor and who has made numerous TV and radio appearances. He will be presenting in the AV room at 2:00 p.m, on Saturday, May 8, 2010. The book, the author’s second, is a collection of true short stories, centered around the lives of Bangladeshi mothers he and his family came to know well while living in that South Asian country. They founded the Amarok Society (AS), a registered Canadian charity providing education programs to the extremely poor in South Asia. The programs help with the problem of over 70 million children worldwide too poor for school by teaching their mothers to be neighbourhood teachers. The author will be available to interview and will talk about his experiences through the Amarok Society. Some of the insights he will share with the public will be how they successfully gained access to dangerous slums normally closed to outsiders, where he was adopted by the Queen of Beggars as her father, and how women from

Artist’s work to brighten DCHS halls has been displayed throughout the valley and Western Canada. Bjerland's work appears in the Alberta Foundation of the Arts Collection as well as private collections. In 2007, the couple founded WB Studios and both produce ceramics,

sculptures, landscapes and abstracts. She is the local Artsparks coordinator. She said to have her work displayed in DCHS is ﬁtting for the school. “The school is really supportive of the arts with theatre, sculpture and visual mediums," Bjerland said.

A Drumheller artist has made a generous donation to the Drumheller Composite High School (DCHS) to warm the halls after the construction is complete. Leila Bjerland has donated a work called River Gold, based on a view of the Red Deer River to be hung in the school once it re-opens. “I’ve had two children go through the school, and right now the younger one is in Grade 7,” said Bjerland. “I thought it would be nice to add something to the school.” She adds, the education her family has received from DCHS has been high quality.

She proposed an offer to donate one of her works, and the staff at the school selected River Gold from her website. River Gold, created in 2005, is an oil painting of the river surrounded by the warm golden colours of the valley. “The painting is of the river from the trail from Nacmine to Drumheller, when you look across,” she said. “It symbolizes Drumheller.” She adds, the colours are reflective of the school’s colours. Bjerland has had a prosperous career in the arts, graduating from Red Deer College in 1990 with a Fine Arts diploma, majoring in painting and ceramics. She and her husband, Dan Wiebe, came to the valley in 1994. Her work

Baby shower for Jesus helps Growing Opportunities To help Growing Opportunities (GO) in their support for pregnant women, St. Anthony’s Catholic Women’s League (CWL) organized their 2nd annual ‘Baby Shower for Jesus’ event. Residents from as far as Rowley and Rumsey generously came to drop off gifts and clothing items for newborns that the CWL donated to Growing Opportunities, based at the Drumheller Health Centre. GO offers a free and confidential service to assist pregnant women in need with all the care and nutritional advice they may need. The gifts are given as an incentive to women who breast feed for the first month, as it provides the best nutritional care for babies and many benefits for both mom and child. Junior Achievement reveals recipe for success submitted | inSide Drumheller

Volunteers from throughout Central Alberta, including Olds, Didsbury, Carstairs, Sundre, Cremona, Linden, Three Hills and Red Deer business communities, will give their time to deliver Junior Achievement’s Economics of Staying in School (ESIS) program to 21 classes of Grade 9 students over the two days. Junior Achievement’s ESIS: Economics for Success seminar is a full day voyage of selfdiscovery. Through a variety of interactive activities, students look into the future to discover there are some very real personal and economic consequences to the choices they make now about their schooling. Volunteers will share their personal experiences with the Grade 9 students. Using a variety of hands-on learning activities and discussion groups, these highly-charged JA volunteers will lead the students through the key components of ESIS: Success, Independence, Employability and Futures. Students will leave at the end of the day with the message that the longer they stay in school, the greater the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to achieve success in their career. They will learn ﬁrst-hand that as their future continues to unfold, education and commitment to lifelong learning are the secret ingredients in the recipe for success.

Time to showcase those beautiful yards

My house, as do all houses at one time or another, takes on unpleasant odours from time to time due to various causes, pets, over ripe fruit or cooking. One example is when Pop is frying fish, or when he puts together his particular brand of bouillabaisse or fish stew. It permeates the whole house, and I am not too fond of it. I don’t mind the bouillabaisse itself, but I don’t care for the strong fishy odour when being prepared. What to do? Air fresheners are not the answer because they don’t really freshen the air, they merely mask the odour with a pine or floral scent that is temporary. What then? I have seen ads on T.V. for a product called “Febreze”. According to the hype, this seemed to be just what I was looking for, as it didn’t just mask the odours, but removed them. That’s for me. I went out and bought a big bottle for the next time I needed it. Well, come Friday and Pop had to have his fish dinner. I had gone out for dinner, but upon my return later in the evening, I knew exactly what had been on the menu. This was my chance to put “Febreze” to the test. I got out the bottle, aimed it into the kitchen and squeezed off a few shots. I waited a few seconds and then stuck my nose in for a whiff. I was dismayed and angry. Despite all the advertising hype about removing odours, I found that I had merely traded one odour I didn’t like for another. I must add that the latter was more stifling than the former. “Febreze”, just another perfume laced spray, a hoax, a sham, a fraud, a great disappointment.

I wrote all of the above, and their meanings because this is how we (Albertans) were described by a pollster who works indirectly for the CBC, in his strategy advice to the Liberal Party. Surprised? Don’t be. This fellow suggests that the Liberals can regain power by starting up a regional “culture war”, intimating that Albertans have no culture worth mentioning. I suggest that this is a fine example of an Eastern Liberal sympathizer, and the CBC showing their true colours. It reveals an enmity toward Alberta which most Albertans do not even harbor toward Quebec (which at times is certainly deserving). One can only wonder what dastardly thing we might have done to engender such hospitality. This elitist war monger still has the outdated belief that Alberta is nothing more than a jerkwater, the meaning of which is insignificant, literally. He would soon realize Alberta’s insignificance when the cash equalization payment pipeline, containing billions of petrodollars, is suddenly shut off, or when the resource responsible for all those billions, no longer flows to Eastern Canada, and to paraphrase a former premier, the bastards freeze in the dark. May the Liberals never in my lifetime regain 18L power!!

Chris Marion, from Community Gardens, suggested the idea as she participated in Garden Tours in White Horse, where she used to live. “They were excellent fun. It was really neat to see other people’s ideas and what people had done with their yards, especially in White Horse, where growing conditions were really challenging.” The day promises to be funﬁlled. I have always been a fan of layered salads as they are most appealing to serve in a deep, clear bowl. My taco salads were always tossed with everything mixed together. I think this is a nice take on the basic served in a taco bowl which you can usually find taco salad, quite lovely to serve company. in the produce or ethnic area of the grocery store. *some people like Thousand Island dressing with Layered Taco Salad Taco Salad - you could serve that on the side as well. 1 lb. ground beef 2/3 cups water Have a blessed day 1 envelope taco seasoning and remember to be a blessing... 2 medium ripe avocados, peeled and pitted 2 Tbsp. finely chopped red onion 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 tsp. lemon juice 4 cups shredded lettuce 1 two-ounce can sliced ripe olives, drained 2 medium tomatoes, chopped 1 small cucumber, peeled and chopped 5 green onions, chopped 2 cups shredded cheddar 1 cup salsa 2 cups sour cream Tortilla chips Cook beef until no longer pink. Drain. Stir in water and taco seasoning. Boil and stir 2 mins. Cool slightly. Mash avocado with onion, garlic and lemon. In 3 quart glass bowl layer beef, then remaining ingredients in order given. Serve at once with chips - either on the side or 18b crushed over the salad to mix in. This is also nice

Titans tackle spring training camp While it is barely spring, the boys who occupy the gridiron in the fall are already practicing. The senior Titans Spring Camp opened this week, and next week the bantam team will be hitting the ﬁeld. It will be an exciting season for both teams as the seniors are planning a trip to San Diego, and the bantams are welcoming back a strong core of players. On Monday, May 10 at 4

p.m. at the Drumheller football field, prospective bantam players will be registering, and on Tuesday, practice begins. Coach of the bantam team Paul Redmond said he has identified about 15 players coming back to the squad and a strong field of new players coming on. “We have more coming back as opposed to last year,” said Redmond. He said while typically he has about 24-30 players come out, he can accommodate up

to 35. “When you get any more than that, it starts cutting into playing time a little bit,” he said. “Like always, we prefer to improve them as players, as opposed to cutting them.” In the Titans’ short history, it has had a lasting impact on the community, and on the players that have hit the ﬁeld for the team. Redmond says football teaches life lessons.

Players have a chance to be evaluated and learn more about the game on May 14 and 15. The bantam and senior Titans have been invited to participate in a skills camp hosted by the University of Calgary coach Blake Nill, who is originally from Hanna. On Friday, May 14 they will be attending the clinic at the Titans’ ﬁeld, and on Saturday, May 15 they will be in Hanna.

Rimbey and Stettler teams have also been invited. “He (Nill) is looking at rural communities for potential recruitment for the university,” said Redmond. While the season doesn’t begin until the fall, the bantam Titans will be playing an exhibition game against Strathmore. The same weekend the senior Titans will be playing a spring tournament in Ardrossan.

Former Dragon on Allan Cup winning squad A former Drumheller Dragon now has his name attached to one of the oldest and most respected hockey trophies in the country, after the AAA senior men's Fort St. John Flyers won the 2010 Allan cup. Arlo Hadland played for the Drumheller Dragons during the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 seasons. He then attended SAIT and won an ACAC silver medal. He has since returned home to Fort St. John, B.C., and has been on the Flyers’ squad for three seasons. Last year the Flyers lost to the Bentley Generals in its bid to get to the tournament. This time there was a rematch, this time on home ice, and this time it was for all the marbles. The Flyers led from the beginning and went away with a 4-1 victory. “It was exciting,” said Hadland, although he was not on the ice for the ﬁnal. He said it was a tough season for the Flyers because as they are an AAA team, they were voted out of their league, which is primarily AA teams. They were forced to play exhibition games for the year. One unexpected challenge was that, while in previous years they had trouble ﬁlling the roster, this season there were 12 players who did not suit up for the game because they had such strong numbers. The Allan Cup continues to be the top trophy for Canadian senior men’s amateur hockey. It was donated in 1908 to replace the Stanley Cup, as it became a professional trophy. It has been presented to a team in every province, as well as two American teams that played in Canadian leagues.

“He phoned me that night,” said Stanger, who has kept in close contact with Hadland as well as a number of billets. The Stanger family has hosted typically two billets since the Drumheller Dragons were introduced. Many of these relationships have endured, and Stanger says it is rewarding to watch the players go on to their future in hockey and beyond. As well as keeping contact with Hadland, he was a reference for AJ Mikkelsen, who just ﬁnished his senior year playing for the NCAA Division 3 Manhattanville Valiants. He amassed 29 points and earned a Division III All American Second Team Selection. They also hosted Tyler Swanson who is now a City of Calgary police oﬃcer. “You build some relationships with the kids. It is fun and we have always enjoyed it,” said Stanger.
