Mayor Yemen to observe Ukraine presidential election

inSide STREETERS

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Sunday, May 11 we celebrate Mothers and all things wonderful about them, including their motherly advice. inSide Drumheller asks: “What’s the best advice your Mother ever gave you?

Wendy Dodd “Drink it with water. That’s what she told me as I was heading off to university.

Dennis Soukeroff “Basically, don’t play in traffic...too much.

Nav Bal “If you hold too much hate in your heart, it only makes your heart black.

Ted Andrew “There was always something about eating, and milk was good for you. We always had milk.

Brae-Lynn Jorgensen “Always chase your dreams - never give up on yourself.

Chelsea Rotteau “Don’t go to bed angry.

Jarred Durbano “Never put yourself down.

Randy Birdy “Be a simple man (from one of her favourite songs).

Drumheller’s mayor is once again doing his part to ensure that democracy is respected in the Ukraine. About two years ago, Terry Yemen travelled to the Eastern European country to act as an election observer during the country’s general election. He applied and was oered the opportunity to do it again, this time for the presidential elections. He simply feels this is the right thing to do. “When you see what is going on, I feel sorry for those people,â€? he said. “When I was in Eastern Ukraine in 2012 I didn’t see any commerce, the area is a struggling democracy and this may help move them along,â€? said Yemen. He will be departing for the Ukraine on May 20. The election is on May 25, and he expects they will be home by May 29. His role will be to act as an international observer. “There will be about two days of training in Kiev and then we will be deployed. The election is on May 25, and then you stay in the area you are deployed for a second

day. Then it is the back to Kiev to do all the reports and then back to Canada hopefully on May 29,â€? said Yemen. He said in his previous experience during the general election there was groundwork prior to the election visiting polling stations and inspecting. He is not sure how this experience will dier. He is well aware of the risks involved in this mission. Since November of last year there have been violent protests and a government collapse. In February Russia intervened, and the Crimean Parliament voted to enter the Russian Federation. “Safety does concern me. I am going into it with my eyes wide open, I have seen what can happen. I am not naive enough to go in, wave a Canadian Flag, and think nothing is going to happen to me. I will be continually doing self assessments and if I see that it is not a good place or a good time, I’ll leave,â€? he said. He says it was an honour to be one of 138 picked to take on this role for the election. He was selected through CANADEM, a nongovernment orga-

The investigation into the suspicious death of a man in Newcastle is in the hands of the Major Crimes Unit. In the early hours of April 28, 35 year old Brian Le was discovered deceased in a residence on Newcastle Trail. An autopsy was conducted and a thorough investigation is being conducted by the RCMP Major Crimes Unit. Sta Sergeant Art Hopkins says they are not yet able to rule out foul play, and stands by his assurances that this is an isolated event and residents are not at risk. He says it may take some time before there is some deďŹ nitive information from this investigation. “It can take months for them to get back some of the reports‌ right now they are mostly doing the forensic work,â€? said Hopkins. “It is not like on TV, they can’t get it in minutes, it doesn’t get done in a 60 minute show.â€?

Today’s students, tomorrow’s leaders Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

The Alberta Student Leadership Conference (ASLC) starts this Sunday at Drumheller Valley Secondary School. The school plays host to 52 different schools from Alberta and one school from Nunavut for the event. This is the 28th year for the annual conference, which will see 600 students and 100 advisors taking part. Conference chair, teacher Cindy Karpa, said the goals at the con-

ference includes helping students learn that both they and their contributions to the world are valuable. “It’s inspiring students that they have a voice, and it can be heard, and they can make a difference.” Karpa said leadership development events will include having the students attend keynote speakers on different topics such as facing challenges and overcoming adversity, accepting and embracing your own individuality, and social activism and enterpris-

The conference is bringing back Rachel’s Challenge, which first visited DVSS in 2011, and then again in 2012. Rachel’s Challenge is an organization that helps youth with accep-

tance, kindness, compassion, and respect of others. Karpa said Rachel’s Challenge had an impact with the school, and they’ve seen positive changes as a result. And it encourages and motivates the students. “It’s empowering them to step forward and do those things and believe in themselves.” Karpa said there will be small group workshops that students get to select from. Some are hosted by local teachers and local community members, as well as those from outside the community and province. 70 students from DVSS called “Spirit Leaders” will be heading up the student groups called Spirit Groups, consisting of about 30 kids, with 2 of the 70 students as leaders working together with the group. Another 30 students have given their time to work on the tech crew for the conference, and there are a number of students volunteering.

Elected President for a one year term is Bob Long, Reeve of Kneehill County. Barry Morishita, Deputy Mayor of the City of Brooks is Vice-President. George Bohne, Mayor of the Town of Raymond is now Treasurer and Al Cambell Town of Stettler is elected Secretary. Past President Doug Jones, Mayor of the Town of Oyen, was elected at the recent Annual General Meeting to a three-year term as Director representing the southeast of the region.

Members at large appointed by the Board of Directors are: Jeff Carlson, Councillor, City of Lethbridge; City of Medicine Hat Councillor Brian Varga and Terry Yemen, Mayor, Town of Drumheller. They are joined on the Board by Doran Degenstein, Executive Director, Fort Whoop-Up, who is completing one more year in his term on the Board. Canadian Badlands Tourism also announces the Board of Directors has accepted the recommendation of Cindy Amos, who has served as Interim Executive Leadership for the organization since May, 2013, to seek a new leader for the organization. “Much has been accomplished in a short period un-

As Minister of Tourism Richard Starke pointed out at our Annual General Meeting in March, we have met every objective we set out to deliver and Canadian Badlands Tourism has become a model of collaborative tourism destination management. We are poised for greater things but, with my mandate completed, we require new leadership to take us to the next phase of our evolution.”

The bottom of the south hill into Drumheller is undergoing a Spring make-over. The highway entry near Extra Foods has had improvements done on the median, and will be receiving new plants and shrubbery on both sides of the highway. Mayor Terry Yemen

told inSide Drumheller work on this section is the start of the Town’s entrance beautification. The beautification program has the Town and partners all contributing funds toward the project. “We’re going to start there and go as far as we can go. We’ve got about $300,000 set aside for it between the town and the partners.”

The Town of Drumheller is planning the improvements to all five of Drumheller’s highway entrances. “They’re not all going to be done this year, it’ll be done project by project. We’ll see how far the money goes,” said the Mayor.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, minimize any negative energy this week. Strive to be a source of optimism when others are looking at the glass as half empty. It can work wonders. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you are unable to convey some feelings to others, but your body language will go a long way toward getting your message across. Remain conscious of your actions. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 One of your goals this week is to propel yourself further without pushing others too hard, Capricorn. You want to be successful but not at the expense of others. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, focus on practical matters, such as your career goals, for the time being. Crucial decisions must be made and new relationships must be fostered. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, trust your gut instincts on an issue that has been puzzling you this week. Spain and a few trips to Mexico. Argentina may be her furthest excursion yet. This trip wasn’t planned at the spur of the moment. Brianna set her sights on this over a year ago, and made arrangements to graduate from high school early. While many students are picking out prom dresses, she was working on learning more about the culture of Argentina. “I had to get permission from the principal to graduate early and then I started cramming courses to graduate in January. And then I had to work for a few months to get the money to do this,” said Brianna. The excursion is for three months and she will be back at the end of July. This is a path she wants to continue for her professional career. “I am going to the University of Alberta and I’m doing a major in biology with a minor in political science. I want to do international environmental projects, and like the name implies there would be a lot of travelling,” she said.

A Drumheller girl has worked hard over the last year to make her way to Argentina, but her work is far from over. Brianna Watson, 17, daughter of Dave and Shauna Watson arrived in Buenos Aires last weekend. She wanted to take on a new challenge and found a company that presents adventure excursion travel. As a 17 year old, she was able to work out a volunteer opportunity in Buenos Aires working with orphans. “This was the only way through a non-religious group that would allow me, at 17, to go to another country to do mission-like work,” Brianna told inSide Drumheller. “There’s a series of orphanages on the outskirts of the city that I will be working at.” The job entails working in a guardian-like capacity for the children. Her day starts by getting them up and taking them to school. It also includes preparing meals and helping with homework, six days a week. “It will be long days,” she chuckles. At 17, she is a well-seasoned travBrianna Watson… eller, taking trips to New York and working with orphans in Washington. She spent a summer in Buenos Aires

Albertans are making themselves heard. They’ve stood up for workplace pensions. They’ve let their MLAs know that laws designed to undermine workplace pension plans are unacceptable. And the public has made the government pause. Bills 9 and 10 are being put to public hearings, and won’t return to the legislature until fall. Albertans now have an opportunity to discuss real retirement security for all. Tell the Alberta government to strengthen — not undermine — retirement security. And ask the Conservative government to do something 14051AA0 for Albertans who don’t have workplace pension plans by joining all the other provinces in supporting the expansion of the Canada Pension Plan. DinoArts Committee provides overview Michele Scott| inSide Drumheller

Representatives from the town’s DinoArts Committee attended Drumheller Town Council Monday Evening. John Shoff, Ryan Semchuk and Ava Wheeler, representing DinoArts, gave a presentation to Council April 28. They noted that DinoArts was originally a subcommittee of the Chamber of Commerce, but was split off to be the main fundraising arm for the preservation and enhancement of the dinosaur statues around town and the installation of new dinosaur statues. The Chamber of Commerce owns the dinosaurs and is responsible for their insurance costs, which Council heard are quite significant. DinoArts listed their three main projects: • The Calgary Zoo Dinosaurs relocation, delayed because of the Calgary June 2013 flood, estimated arrival date is 2019. There will be costs incurred to transport the structures to Drumheller. • The new Coal Miner dinosaur, which will be installed across the Gordon Taylor Bridge in front of Country Road RV. The project was sourced locally to Palcoprep, and the Atlas Coal Mine is providing a genuine coal car for the installation. • Fundraising events, specifically July 1 and DinoFest, where participants can paint a piece of the dinosaur in front of Memorial Arena. DinoArts also hopes to hold barbecues for fundraisers. The delegation then presented “Our Town Requests”, with four items. • To set-up an agreement with the Town for maintenance and repair of “Dinnie”, the dinosaur at Rotary Spray Park. This was agreed to, and the Mayor will send a confirmation letter to DinoArts. The Town retains ownership. • DinoArts would like to secure a work in-kind arrangement from the Town for future projects.

• The committee invites a Council member to join thier Board. • DinoArts requests an open dialogue about possible financial investment, such as the Town matching the Chamber of Commerce’s $10,000. Councillor Zariski congratulated the committee on all the work they’ve done, then the DinoArts representatives answered a number of questions from the councillors. There are 36 statues DinoArts looks after, and they aim to locate them in high tourist areas. The committee is working with the school for the grade eight class to take on painting the dinosaurs, but volunteers would prep the statues first.

Drumheller’s U14 soccer players will be on the road a bit more for this soccer season after their first game with Three Hills. In addition to playing soccer in the Big Country League, the group has also joined the Central Alberta League. U 14 Coach Mark Ohlbrich said joining the new league will help the kids improve their soccer game, because it bumps them up to a tier three level and gives them more field time. “It’s a harder level of play, and gives them eight more games.”

“The new league gives them more time to play, so we could have the extra game time to increase their skill level.” He said the team will be playing teams they haven’t met previously in soccer matches, such as Red Deer. Ohlbrich is waiting on the game schedule for the central league. Games start in mid-May and are played every second Saturday of the outdoor soccer season. The U14s season in the Big Country League started last week, and Ohlbrich said they’re a very good team with a lot of skill. He said many of players on the

There are 60 players on four teams competing Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Drumheller Soccer Fields. League organizer Gavin Makse was unsure what kind of turnout they would have with the set up the league. “It was really good how it all came together,” said Makse. “Four teams and 60 players is very promising for this year and for the rec soccer league in the future. The teams play eight a side and have players between the ages of 16 and 60. While they have referees and they do keep score, at its heart, the league is recreational with players of

all levels of experience. “They were competitive games, that is one concern I had, was having balance within the league and both games were good and close,” said Makse. The league will continue for eight weeks. After Week 1, Team Esso was victorious over Team Riverside Value Drug Mart with a score of 6-4, and DVSS United defeated the Brick with a score of 3-2. “Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun and that’s how I wanted it. We are recreational, and we are all out there for the same reasons, to have some fun and to get some exercise, meet some new people and interact with coworkers,” he said. League play goes until June 12. Playoff begins on June 17 and the championship is on Thursday, June 26.

team have been playing soccer for a number of years, with players who have come from the indoor soccer league, as well as a few new players this year. The team is new this year because there wasn’t enough players to form a U14 team last year. Ohlbrich said they aim to have 18 to 20 kids on the team, with 11 on the field for the game. The group has been practicing diligently, he notes, “We’ve had a really good turnout this year.” Big Country League games are played Tuesday and Thursday at the soccer fields in the Hy-Grade Industrial Park.
