Dinosaur Half gives back Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

In September, more than 400 athletes raced in the inaugural Community Futures Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon. Their efforts are now contributing to giving residents more opportunity to live an active lifestyle by investing in the Badlands Community facility. On Wednesday morning, November 10, race coordinator Colin Kloot, and general manager of Community Futures Big Country Wayne Hove presented a cheque for $4,000 directed towards the construction of the Badlands Community Facility. This donation follows a successful first event, both participation-wise, and financially. “It is beyond what we hoped for. I never dreamed that we would be able to donate a sizable amount of money and to retain seed for next year’s event,” Kloot told inSide Drumheller. For future events, the committee hopes to contribute even more to the facility to see it through. “That’s where we want to go, we want to get that facility up and running,” said Kloot. The event built partnerships in the community with volunteers, businesses and sponsors. Community Fu-

Futures would be the main sponsor of the 2011 event. “It is great partnership, to have the level of professionalism on the part of Colin’s team and to have the level of response the community has brought to it, I can’t help to say this is a proud moment for our community. It just shows that when we have a vision, and we focus on attaining that vision, the talent of this community per capita is larger than any

I have no doubt this race would have not taken place,” said Kloot. He is also grateful for the community involvement in staging such an event. “This is an excellent community event and community participation was excellent, either by way of participation, by way of sponsorship and by way of volunteers on the day,” said Kloot. “On race day we had 95 volunteers alone.”

He adds they are still receiving feedback on how well the organizers and the community in general did in hosting the event. “The whole town was congratulated on the event, and everybody said they would be back,” said Kloot. “Everybody also admitted it was a very challenging course.” Racers will have even more reasons to return as already plans are being laid for next year’s race which will add a third event. Race day is Sunday, September 11, and along with the 5-kilometre and half marathon race, competitors will be able to take on an intermediate distance of 10 kilometres. Kloot expects that adding the 10-kilometre race, they could host in the area of 900 runners. “We are confident we can pull it off, we are confident we can make a good profit to give back to the community facility next year,” said Kloot. Construction is continuing on the Badlands Community Facility in downtown Drumheller. The construction will start with a field house, running track, fitness centre, meeting facilities and a new public library followed by an arena and curling rink as funding becomes available.

Direct Energy moves into Drumheller natural gas market Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

“I vowed to be done by December 1, because this year I am cooking the turkey.”

Drumheller residents have another option when it comes to purchasing their natural gas. Direct Energy expanded its service to the Drumheller area starting November 1, 2010. This gives consumers a choice of retailers to purchase natural gas. Drumheller is in the AltaGas service area. Currently AltaGas supplies customers at the regulated rate. This rate is set monthly and is subject to change. Over the previous year, rates have fluctuated from a low of $2.906 per gigajoule, upwards to $6.646. With Direct Energy in the market, consumers will now be able to enter a contract with a fixed price for energy. “Direct Energy believes all consumers should have the power to choose who supplies energy to their homes and businesses,” said Tanis Kozak, vice president and general manager, Direct Energy.

“We’re excited to be introducing Direct Energy’s natural gas products for the first time to residential customers in the AltaGas service territory. It’s a big day for customers and for Direct Energy.” Lynzey MacRae, spokesperson for Direct Energy explained it took some time to iron out some technical issues before they made their expansion. “Up until this time, on the natural gas side, our billing system was not compatible,” she said. “AltaGas has upgraded their billing system and now ours works with theirs.” Direct Energy’s expansion is not just in Drumheller, but much of AltaGas’ service area. It includes 90 communities. MacRae said choice could be beneficial to consumers. “We would advocate for choice for all Albertans. Ideally, we think it is important for people to choose who provides their energy, natural gas and electricity,” she said. “The more choices you have the

more innovative companies can be with their products and prices.” John Shoff has been looking forward to another retailer coming to Drumheller since the Alberta Government announced they would be deregulating the market. “This is great news for Drumheller! We now have a choice and competition in this area should help bring the price down,” he said. “I would like to see all the other major retailers follow suit so we can have as much choice as Calgary or Edmonton.” Direct Energy has made an aggressive pitch to consumers, offering its lowest price ever on a natural gas contract. As they are also an electricity retailer, they are able to bundle the services together on a contract, adding a further savings on administrative costs. Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller On the eve of the release of his new rock-country album In the Driver’s Seat, artist Aaron Pritchett spoke to inSide Drumheller about his new tunes and his upcoming show at the Stampede Barn. Pritchett says over a year of work has gone into his latest, and sixth release, which he says contains country heavily flavoured with rock and roll. The majority of the songs were co-written by Pritchett. “Mostly the idea behind the recording was to be a little more rock-country than anything else,” Pritchett says. “It has a little more flair than I’ve had before. I’m in control of my own destiny now.” “With this, I’ve created something I consider to be my best recording yet.” Born in British Columbia, Pritchett recorded the album at The Armory in Vancouver, under the guidance of Bruce Fairbairn’s son. Fairbairn, now passed, had produced albums from hard rock artists like AC/DC, Metallica, and Aerosmith. He says this album is hard to compare to other artists. “A little country with a lot of rock infusion.” The only Alberta date on Pritchett’s upcoming tour will be at the Stampede Barn in Drumheller on Saturday, November 20, billed as an acoustic fundraiser on his website. The show is a supportive fundraiser for the Drumheller Public Library. His album, which came out Tuesday, November 9, will be hard to come by in stores around

The MS Society of Canada, Drumheller Chapter, hosted an MS Awareness Day on Wednesday, October 27, 2010. There were four events during the day: an open house at the Drumheller Hospital, an information event for health professionals, a Table Talk at Greentree Mall, and a Volunteer Appreciation night at WHIFS Flap Jack House. “I think the awareness day went really well,” said Dr. Penny Smyth, an Edmonton neurologist who presented to local health professionals and to volunteers during the evening appreciation event. “We reached out to a lot of different parts of the community through the health

professionals talk and the public talk in the evening. People have so many questions. If we can help answer them, then I think it helps people. It helps them take control of their disease and feel empowered to make the decisions that they need.” Deb Wynia, Drumheller Chapter Board President, agrees. “It’s very important for people to know that the MS Society is here to answer their questions. In particular, people have a lot of questions about the controversial CCSVI treatment. We want to be out front in the community so people are aware of our position on the treatment and our advocacy work with the Alberta Government.”

Apparently more ducks flew to their deaths, or more accurately, landed to their deaths (had they kept flying they might have actually landed on water instead of oily sludge) on Syncrude’s tailings pond. This is just after the company had been fined over $3 million for the deaths of approximately 1600 ducks earlier. This is a tragic case of bad timing, for the company, and the ducks of course, brought out those opposed to development of the oil sands, and calls for more fines, and better duck avoidance measures. Fines apparently don’t work too well - the ducks land anyway, and Syncrude has yet to build a better scarecrow. (Maybe that’s the problem, too many scarecrows, not enough scareducks.) Stopping development of the oil sands is impractical. First, it would throw thousands of people out of work; second, “green power”, i.e. wind power, electric, geothermal, etc. simply cannot replace petroleum and all its by-products. Besides, those big windmills bring down their fair share of birds. Bob Hornung of the Canadian Wind Power Association recently wrote in the paper that wind turbines kill one to six birds per year. I find that figure highly suspect. Robert Bryce, author of Power Hungry, wrote that the American Wind Energy Association estimated 1-6 birds killed per megawatt of installed wind power. That sounds a little more realistic. Consider now that according to the Canadian Wind Power Association, Canada has 3549 megawatts of installed wind power, and you have between 3500 to 21,000 birds killed or mortally wounded every year. The deaths at the tailings ponds kind of pale in comparison, what with wind power being so “green” and all. Has anyone alerted James Cameron to this slaughter? Let’s face it, the tar sands are ugly, and they present a large target, no one can argue that, but their development is a necessary evil. However, they belong to the people of Alberta, and it is our responsibility, indeed it is our duty, to see that mitigation and reclamation are equal to development, or at least as close as possible. Our government concerns itself with how much it can claim in royalties from the oil companies. I would suggest that equal concern and consideration be given to how well the oil companies reuse, recycle and reclaim. 45l

‘VIP Patient’ Christine McDougald was honoured to take part in the 25th anniversary celebrations of the ambulance service that saved her, and hundreds of others throughout Alberta. “I can finally tell my story without reliving it." Christine McDougald STARS Air Ambulance celebrated this milestone on Saturday, October 2 at its bases in Calgary and Edmonton. McDougald and her family were in Calgary for the event. McDougald nearly lost her life about six years ago, if it weren’t for STARS. It has only been a short time since she began to share her story. Following the birth of her daughter in 2004, she experienced complications following a routine procedure. She needed to be rushed to a Calgary Hospital. STARS gave her a chance to fight for her life and get back to her family. She shared her story last summer at both the STARS Rumsey Ride and the Old Grouch’s 24-Hour Jam. “I can finally tell my sto-

ry without reliving it,” said McDougald. “Because I know it is a matter of giving back, it may make someone else realize how important STARS is because they know my story and can relate to my story, I am at that point where that's what matters to me now.” Part of the ceremony was the unveiling of a 25th anniversary “Thank You" logo on the choppers. She said Dr. Greg Powell, STARS president and CEO, spoke at the event as well as a STARS survivor. She said this was an emotional experience. “That was the most incredible part for me…he said ‘Every VIP patient here knows they wouldn’t be alive without STARS,’” she said. About 75 per cent of STARS’ mission funding comes from individual donations and corporate support. This is why McDougald feels strongly about supporting this cause through speaking and lending her name to the campaign. She will be featured in the 2011 STARS Lottery brochure next year. “I am proud that I am alive. I am proud my kids have a mom and they know my story,” she said.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, don't let misunderstandings with family lead to long-term arguments. Life is too short to hold a grudge so bridge the gap of communication and you will be happier.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Achange is coming, Taurus, but you won't know what it is until it's right upon you. Keep your eyes open for exciting things on the horizon. Libra is involved, too.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, if you thought things couldn't get anymore challenging, think again. An unexpected request puts your life in disarray for a few days. Ask for help if you need it.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Make the most of time spent with a friend on Tuesday, Gemini. There will be few opportunities for socialization when a big work project lands on your desk.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Challenges seem to find you, Aquarius. However, you may not be in the right frame of mind for dealing with any crisis this week. Buckle down and pull through.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, you won't know what to expect this week, and that can be exciting or hair-raising. Chances are a person who is go-with-the-flow like you will adapt.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, it's amazing how much you can see when you really slow down and admire the scenery. Work responsibilities can wait.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
