BCF fundraising campaign seeks volunteers Michael James | inSide Drumheller

After a meeting between the Town of Drumheller and the Badlands Community Facility fundraising campaign cabinet, plans has been set to move forward. The meeting came after concerns were raised over the progress of the fundraising campaign. In three years, the campaign has raised $3.3 million of its $6 million goal. “There’s a lot of great things that came from the meeting. What I liked best about the meeting was it emphasized to council the leadership we need to show to meet that fundraising target,” said Councillor Jay Garbutt, who had brought his concerns before council earlier in the fall. One of the keys to moving forward was getting more of the community involved in the fundraising efforts. The cabinet currently consists of four volunteer members. “The whole community has been using the facility, seeing the value, and appreciating what’s been done. Now we need those people to help find ways to support it in terms of meeting that fundraising goal,” said Garbutt. New volunteers don’t necessarily have to join the fundraising cabinet, but are needed at events and to help support the BCF brick campaign. Ideas for fundraising are welcome as well. The plans for the immediate future are to continue with the brick campaign, where people can purchase a brick with their name on it

The Town of Drumheller and Badlands Community Facility campaign cabinet are looking for residents to join in on the fundraising efforts for the new facility. The campaign has roughly $2.7 million left before reaching its fundrais-

ing goal. The cabinet will be ramping up its brick campaign and other efforts to help build momentum moving forward.

Compared to similar projects in the province, fundraising for the BCF has gone well. “One of things talked about in the meeting was the environment the campaign cabinet found themselves. They referred to several different projects in the province going on around the same time as ours. They had similar recreation facilities, but the fundraising component of each was a dramatically smaller proportion of the project’s budget,” said Garbutt. “The point was to highlight that $6 million for the first phase here was a lofty goal and no one should be surprised that it’s taking longer to reach that goal.” As an example, Salvatore highlighted a

project in Grande Prairie costing over $100 million. The fundraising target was set at $6 million, but recently reduced to half after efforts weren’t performing well. For the time being, regular updates on the progress of the fundraising efforts will be given at the Committee of the Whole meetings every two weeks. Volunteers are needed to help ensure the success of the campaign. “The cabinet needs to be applauded for the work they’ve done, but it’s a small group. It needs to be larger for them to meet their goals,” said Garbutt. “We encourage people to get involved in having a legacy in the biggest and best project this community has ever built.” w44eowd

• • • • • • Mayor Terry Yemen opened the meeting by welcoming Mellissa D'Onofrio-Jones, Director of Library Services, and Linda Traquair, chair of the Drumheller Library Board, who gave a presentation on the plans of the library. Mrs. D'Onofrio-Jones highlighted the statistics of the library compared to last year. Overall, the number of items processed, memberships, and the number of people entering the library have all increased substantially over 2011. The delegation then presented the library's plan of service for 2013 to 2015. The areas the library will focus on are early reading, promoting reading for pleasure, enable lifelong learning, and connect to the world through public internet access. The delegation asked council to consider increasing their funding by $12,816 for 2013. The delegation was very confident about meeting their budget goals for this year. • • • • • • Executive Director of the Canadian Badlands Passion Play Vance Neudorf presented council with the results of the 2012 Passion Play. Though total attendance this year was down due to weather, the play set a new record for single day attendance. Mr. Neudorf outlined plans for the 20th performance season. It is hoped the new forum theatre and market spaces will be finished in the next year. Councillor Jay Garbutt asked if there were any concrete plans for the ski hill at this time. Mr. Neudorf explained the Passion Play has exhausted their ideas and no one has approached them to use the space. • • • • • • Paul Salvatore, Director of Community Services, presented an update regarding the fundraising efforts of the Badlands Community Facility campaign cabinet. CAO Ray Romanetz explained during the emergency, the disaster services committee was able to mobilize quickly and bring in a generator to power Town Hall. Plans for the new Town Hall will include a generator that will automatically come online should the power go out. It was asked if the Badlands Community Facility could be hooked up to a generator and serve as a gathering place for residents during an emergency. Mr. Romanetz explained the cost would be staggering, but has looked at possibly rewiring the building so a generator could power the lights. Councillor Garbutt asked if the Town Page could address how residents could enhance their own emergency preparedness. • • • • • •

This week, project leader for Hope Health Dr. Jon Ohlhauser announced they have hired Dr. Keshia Kamphuis. She will be the first resident naturopathic doctor to practice at the clinic. “We are thrilled to

Destination marketing timeline set for end of year Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The Town of Drumheller is getting closer to creating a destination marketing organization after meeting with key stakeholders in tourism. During the development process of a destination marketing organization, it is hoped more individuals, attractions and businesses will join. “There is an opportunity here to engage more individual operators. This would mean rather than individual businesses operating on their own, we could pool

funds and have much bigger ad buy and marketing approach. We could get more exposure on many dierent levels than we currently enjoy, said Paul Salvatore, Director of Community Services for the Town of Drumheller. The main stakeholders include the Town of Drumheller, the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce, Royal Tyrrell Museum, Atlas Coal Mine, Passion Play, Rosebud Theatre, Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club, hotels, and more. At the moment, administration for the

Town is investigating potential models for a new destination marketing organization. One of the keys to determine which model will be used is how it will be funded. “That seems to be one of the hang-ups is how to fund it. There are various models we’re looking at. Some rely on business licensing revenues, others on a contribution per organization, based on how many marketing initiatives they might subscribe to, said Salvatore. “We want to ensure, whatever model we choose, we have the support of the stakeholders in the industry. Administration has indicated they will be ready to move forward by the end of the year. A destination marketing initiative was recommended as part of the Tourism Master Plan report commissioned by the Town of Drumheller.

Get ready! Santa Claus coming to town December 1 Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

He’s making a list and checking it twice and will be heading through downtown Drumheller to meet all the local boys and girls before Christmas. Santa Claus is coming to town on December 1 for his annual Christmas parade. There are all kinds of activities planned for the coming Saturday and it is leads o with the parade. Roxanne Clark of the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce said the parade goes at 1 p.m. Participants can begin to form up at The Brick parking lot at 12:30. The tradition goes back years in Drumheller, as does the participation of the Drumheller Lions Club. They will once again be serving hotdogs and hot chocolate during the parade at

Youth given 18 month probation order Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A young man has been given a community disposition after pleading guilty to a number of charges. The young man, who cannot be identiďŹ ed under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, November 9. He pleaded guilty to break and enter and assault and mischief as well as assaulting a peace oďŹƒcer and breaching his curfew. The court heard how on September 15 at about 10:30 p.m. he was observed kicking a door, causing damage. He then entered the residence and admitted to assaulting another person. On September 21 the youth was subject to a recognizance and at about 1:24 p.m. RCMP observed the young person intoxicated. When he was arrested he became verbally belligerent and assaulted the oďŹƒcer. The court heard that the 17 year old’s biggest problem is alcohol and felt the best way to deal with this was through a 18 month probation order.

the Legion. Another tradition that goes back years is the support of the Napier Theatre for The Salvation Army. After the parade the revelers can head to the theatre and for a non-perishable food donation, they can see a Christmas movie. This year Clark says there is so much more planned. That afternoon the Rotary Club is planning to unveil its outdoor skating rink at the World’s Largest Dinosaur. Clark also says the Family Fun Committee is planning all kinds of activities to ring in the Christmas season in the same area. Organizers are also planning the ďŹ rst Drumheller Winterfest and will have light displays at the Centennial Park. As the Santa Claus Parade extravaganza draws closer, Clark asks those interested in joining up for the parade to make sure they register. Excluding Sundays, there are only 32 shopping days until Christmas. All you women reading this, feel free to ignore it, as most of you have already done your Christmas shopping. This is a heads-up for the men. It won’t make any dierence to most guys, nor is it likely to change their shopping patterns, but if I can save just one man the humiliation and anxiety of having to rush around on Christmas Eve, then I will consider myself successful. About the deer mentioned in last week’s column. The morning after the big snow, I went out to clear the step, and there, only four steps away, were the tracks of a deer. If I had come out at the right time, I could have bagged that sucker with a baseball bat. Three days before the storm there was another sign of deer in my front yard. As I was walking to get the mail, I looked across my lawn, and there was a big pile of deer pellets. The snow and cold have ďŹ nally set the geese in motion. Two mornings in a row I have seen large ocks winging their way south, talking all the while. Something else, which I see all too rarely, was a ock of swans ying low. Beautiful. How much can you aord to put into your RRSP this year? For some it isn’t much, for others, they can max out, or contribute the full amount for which they are eligible. How about a minimum low contribution of $17,400.00? That is very nice, but that’s not something everyone can aord. Those who can aord it sit in the Alberta Legislature, and even they don’t make that contribution, we taxpayers do it for them. That’s right, even though you may not be able to aord to make a contribution to your RRSP, you’re going to make a substantial one to that of some MLA. All the MLA needs to contribute is about $5000.00, and you and I cover the rest, for a total RRSP contribution of about $22,400.00.

You just have to deal with what life gives you and move on. Any travel destinations in mind? I’d love to go somewhere tropical and romantic with my husband. What three things would you take to a deserted island? My makeup, my hairspray and my favorite pair of shoes. Oh, and my husband of course. Oops, that was 4 wasn’t it? I guess my husband will have to stay at home on the couch in front of the TV. Do you collect anything? Beauty magazines. Can’t get enough of them.

Age: Honey, a gentlemen should never ask a lady that question! I will say that I have two grown boys who go to college, but remember, I was a child bride. Occupation: I run my own beauty salon. Anyone who’s anybody gets their hair done at Truvy’s. What do you like most about your job? I love makin’ people feel good about themselves. There is no such thing as natural beauty! Dream job? I’m doin’ it. I just love the people who come to my shop, and I get to see my best friends most every week. Where are you from? I’ve lived here in Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana, all my life. What do you like most about living there? It’s a wonderful neighborhood,

What would be your theme song? How about “Put a Little Love in Your Heart.. What is one piece of technology you could not live without? My hair dryer. Any words of wisdom? Remember to take time to be a good friend, and look after the people you love. Fill your life with quality people.

Students spread anti-bullying message to peers Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Students are spreading the word about why bullying is not cool, especially during National Bullying Awareness Week, which ends tomorrow. The Friends of Rachel (FoR) Club at Drumheller Valley Secondary School (DVSS) have been taking the time to talk with their younger peers throughout the week. “We’re always doing anti-bullying activities. One of the things we have on the go at the moment is the Grade 12 members of the FoR Club are going around and speaking to Junior High classes about bullying, how it has impacted them, and the ways you can stop it,”

said Lynn Hemming, a DVSS teacher who helps the club. Another way the club combats bullying is to turn around peer pressure to change the behaviour of bullies. “We sometimes use older students to have an impact on younger students to encourage bullies to stop and kids who are being bullied to find ways to be supported,” said Hemming. One of the keys to successfully stopping bullying is to get students involved in the process. FoR Club members will routinely step into situations and have noticed their peers doing the same as well. Bullying can take a variety of forms. Most common are verbal, social, and physical bul-

lying, which involve name-calling, exclusion, hitting, or damaging personal property. However, a growing area of concern is cyber bullying. Cyber bullies will often send emails or text messages with insults or threats, or spread hateful comments about an individual through email, text, or posting on social media sites. Other tactics include stealing passwords and sending hurtful emails or messages using an assumed identity, or building websites or social media pages to target specific people. Some forms of bullying are considered crimes under the Criminal Code of Canada and can violate the Canadian Human Rights Act.

Town of Drumheller begins work on utility rate bylaw Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Administration at the Town of Drumheller has begun to look at utility rates going forward and is confident this year they will end up in the black. That doesn’t mean, however, that water rates will remain the same.

As of the third quarter, revenues for water is at about 63 per cent, while, theoretically, they would be expected to be at 75 per cent. Acting director of corporate services, Bill Wulff, explains at the same time, expenses were also at about the same level, indicating lower water usage.

On the sewer side, revenue was at about 92 per cent, while expenses were only at 73 per cent. Wulff said he is confident there will be a surplus in the water and wastewater account at the end of this year. He said there are a number of factors that have not been added into

the equation that will be before the end of the year, and they are in the initial stages of determining water and wastewater rates for the next year. This year, the Town of Drumheller was successful in renegotiating its contract with the Drumheller Institution for its water utilities.

In 2009 the Town made efforts to operate the utilities as a full cost recovery service. This means the funds raised though water and waste water rated have to reflect the cost to operate the utility. If there is a shortfall, Wulff said the Town could use reserves to make up the difference

or they could use a rate rider. This is a transparent extra charge added to residents’ bills until the shortfall is made up. Regardless, it is too early to say whether there will we a surplus or a shortfall. A Utility Rate Bylaw should be passed late in 2012 or early 2013.

Skaters ready routines for figure skating judges Drumheller’s ďŹ gure skaters will soon be showing what they have got. On December 10, skaters from the junior, and intermediate Valley Figure Skating Club programs will set o to be judged on their skating skills. “We send our skaters to another club that’s doing a testing day for skaters from the area. They’re judged and if they have enough skill, they move up to the next level. They get tested at least twice a year,â€? said Suzette Lefreniere, president of the Valley Figure Skating Club. Skaters will continue to practice hard for the next several weeks. For most, this will be the only opportunity for them to get updated on their development. Afterwards, the club will prepare their skaters for competition. This year, unlike previ-

ous years, all skaters will be required to compete in open competition, which means competing with some of the best young skaters in the region.

“There’s no Fun Skate this year, so if anyone wants to compete they have to go into the open. When you’re a recreational program like we are, it can be a little diďŹƒcult,â€? said Lefreniere. The judging marks the half way point in the

ďŹ gure skating season. So far this year, there are 18 skaters enrolled in the junior, intermediate, and senior programs. Another 21 are participating in the preCanSkate and CanSkate programs, which focus on teaching children how to stake and become stronger skaters. “It’s about the same as previous years,â€? said Lefreniere. “It’s a great way to get some extra ice time. The more you skate, the stronger a skater you become.â€? To learn more about the club or to get involved, visit www. drumhellerskating.ca.

Drumheller figure skaters will be lacing up their skates for judging soon. Judging will be held on December 10 and will test how much the skaters have developed over the first half of the figure skating season. During the second half of the season, skaters will head off to open competition to test themselves against some of the best in the area. filephoto

The St. Anthony’s senior girls volleyball team ended a strong season with a young team. The Sabres played at their league championship night versus teams from Morrin, Delia and Hanna and came away with a third place ďŹ nish in league. Coach Marie Hirsch believes the team had the ability to do even better, and saw consistent improvement throughout the season. On top of league play, they also went to tournaments in Bassano and Duchess this season. They went to regional playos last weekend and did not place, meaning the team did not move on to the zone playos. They were however able to steal a game from a strong Bassano team. “It was our very last game and we won the second set,â€? said coach Hirsh. Hirsh said the team had fun and enjoyed camaraderie, and next year she expects they will be on the winning side more than this season. The Sabres are a very young team and will only be losing one player who is graduating; the rest of the squad could remain intact. “They have played together for a year now and next season we’ll se how it goes,â€? said Hirsch.

win. “It was a really good game, said manager Mary Hodge. “All that dryland practice we do really helps. As a result of the win, the bantam Raptors were switched to tier 3 and will now be facing a little competition down the line. “It’ll be good for the kids and will be a good challenge for them, said Hodge. The bantams have so far been undefeated this season and are aiming to keep the momentum going for another championship.

This past weekend saw minor hockey teams from the area crossing over to play in dierent tiers. The Boston Pizza/Western Chev bantam Raptors moved up in division. The bantam Raptors were in Okotoks this past weekend in a crossover game. The Raptors were up against a tier 3 team, whereas they were classed as tier 4. The Encana tier 6 atom team also hosted a squad from Brooks on Saturday, and lost by a close 3-2. Brooks managed to get up by two goals by the ďŹ rst seven minutes of the second period, leaving the Raptors no choice but to try a come back. Both of the Encana goals came from Hudson Tucker, who leads the team with seven goals and ten points. The loss leaves the team in third place overall in their division and four points behind Brooks, who occupy second. The McDonald’s tier 3 novice team had a double bill this past weekend and they dominated their com-

petition. On Saturday the team went up against Beiseker and came away with a 10-5 win. The following day, they repeated with a convincing 12-3 exhibition win against Chestermere. The win against Beiseker gives the team a 2-2-1 record so far this season. The Canalta tier 6 novice Raptors continue to cement their lead in the top spot of their division. Brooks came to town on Saturday and the Canalta Raptors came away with a 14-10 win. For more about minor hockey, visit www. drumhellerminorhockey.com.
