Staff at the Drumheller Health Centre were carving up a storm at their annual pumpkin carving contest. But for the operating room staff, it looks like the were baking up a storm too. Their creation of this little stinker was the top entry into the contest after more than 200 votes were cast. (l-r) site leader Nancy Guntrip, Staci White of the operating room and Sandra Mills of imaging figure it must be a trick, because it sure wasn’t a treat. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Council convenes for first public meeting Monday

inSide STREETERS An elementary/junior high school in Calgary is doing away with the honour roll for its students. inSide Drumheller asks: “Would you support something similar in Drumheller?”

Joey Samoleski “They should give you pop and chips instead.”

Ben Huculak “No, it makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something.”

Drumheller’s new Town Council will be holding their first meeting on Monday. After being elected on October 21, the new council has spent some time getting oriented. Monday, November 4, will be their first public meeting. The agenda, says Mayor Terry Yemen, is light and aims to pair councillors with various committees, such as the Library Board or Policing Committee. “Monday’s meeting is solely an organizational meeting, so what’s going to happen there is we’re going to assign the councillors different committees,” said Yemen. “From there, we’re kind of an open slate. I don’t think

there were a lot of burning issues leftover from the previous council.” One of the most colossal tasks for any council is on the horizon, however. This fall, council will delve into budget deliberations. “It’ll be in the neardistant future. It’s kind of unfortunate that they have the elections this time of year, because one of the first things a new council has to do is one of the most significant things you do,” said Yemen. “In the fall, one of the priorities is always the budget.” Two issues facing the new council are replacing the water slide at the Aquaplex and the completion of the East Coulee water transmission line. Yemen says the slide will be discussed in the

new year. “It’s scheduled for us to look at in 2014. There have been people asking us to look at a gradual entry of the pool, too, which would be expensive,” said Yemen. For East Coulee, residents have raised concerns over the water fill station being constructed at the only entrance into the community. As of right now, the issue isn’t an agenda item. “It hasn’t been formally asked to be on the agenda, yet,” said Yemen. “The concern over the usage?, I don’t

know where it’s coming from. There have been concerns there would be industrial usage and traffic jams from industries using the station, but I don’t see them using it. There’s an industrial fill station in Drumheller that fills a lot faster. I don’t see semis heading out to East Coulee to fill up when they could do it easier in Drumheller,” Yemen said any problems caused by the fill station would be addressed. “If it causes problems, there will have to be adjustments made to the

operation of it. I think we’ll have to see what problems there are first,” said Yemen. Drumheller residents elected predominately incumbent council on October 21, with Yemen and Councillors Jay Garbutt, Lisa Hansen-Zacharuk, Sharel Shoff, and Tom Zariski returning for another term. Patrick Kolafa and Tara McMillan were elected as the two new members of council. Council meetings start at 4:30 p.m. each Monday at Town Hall.

amalgamation with the Town. We don’t ask for much from the town in East Coulee. We already had a sewer system and most of our roads were paved. We all had water although some do admittedly have better water than others due to the iron in this area. Everyone is likely aware of the drama resulting from the town proposing to install municipal water to East Coulee residents. We were successful in convincing the council that we did not want it as the cost to each property owner was prohibitive and hey, “if it ain’t broke .. :’ Well, the water line up to East Coulee is going in anyway, as we were told it would. The town has also made plans to install a water filling station for water hauling trucks which in and of itself may be a good thing for the Town and its sale of water, however, the location for their filling station is NOT. The proposed location is right across from the East Coulee Hotel in what used to be the railway yard at the only entrance to East Coulee. There is already the hotel and its patrons on that corner, a firehall, the Gerlinger shop from which their pump trucks run daily, AND a school bus stop! Do you think we really need water trucks coming in and out of that same intersection every day? Perhaps this will be yet another attraction for our little community. What do you think?

Have you ever driven down to East Coulee on a Sunday morning for a pancake breakfast hosted by the East Coulee Community Association? Have you perhaps attended the annual Spring Festival sponsored by the East Coulee School Museum? Maybe you have taken guests or family members down to the Atlas Coal Mine Museum for the day. All of these events and attractions are part of the community of East Coulee and draw local residents and tourists to our tiny hamlet in both summer and winter. There have not been a lot of improvements to our community infrastructure (other than updating the sewage plant! And oh yes, the playground that Jamie Gerlinger almost single-handedly raised funds for) since we were part of the former MD of Badlands, but we kind of expected that when we voted in favour of Barbara Repas

Flu shots now available at local pharmacies Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Tis’ the season. Albertans are being urged to get the flu shot this year and it’s never been easier. Starting October 21, Flu Clinics began travelling around the province and local pharmacies began administering this year’s flu vaccine. “We’ve been going pretty hard since then. We even did a few prior to that for patients considered high risk, like people with high blood pressure, diabetes, or asthma for instance,” said

Pat Doyle, pharmacist with Anderson Drugs at Freson Bros. IGA. Alberta Health Services hosted a Flu Clinic last week, but those who missed it can still get the vaccine by heading to one of Drumheller’s pharmacies. Additional Flu Clinics have been scheduled at the Drumheller Health Centre on November 5, 25, and 26. Those wishing to get the vaccine can receive it in one of two ways; the traditional needle or a nasal spray. “We like to reserve the spray for the kids. We haven’t had any adults

ask for the nasal spray, but it’s there for adults, too,” said Doyle. The number of Albertans getting immunized has been increasing. It is estimated 920,000 Albertans received the shot last year, an increase of 46,000 over 2011. “We’re quite happy with the turnout so far. If I had to say, I would say it’s been busier than last year,” said Ray Ainscough, pharmacist with

Riverside Value Drug Mart. “Generally, every year we exceed our previous year, though the biggest year was during the H1N1 scare.” Some of the increase may be due to the widespread availability of the flu shot. “We have customers who don’t necessarily get many prescriptions, but come for the flu shot. They like the atmosphere, because it’s dif-

ferent doing it at a store, rather than a flu clinic. It’s an added bonus for everyone. It’s a win-win,” said Doyle. Everyone is encouraged to take a few minutes to get the shot, which is available at pharmacies throughout Drumheller. Those wishing to get immunized need only bring their Alberta Health Care

number. Pharmacies can administer the shot to anyone nine-years-old and over. “I always say, as a person who’s had the flu, I never miss my flu shot now. I had the flu a few years back and it was five days of pure agony, so I always recommend people to get their shot,” said Ainscough.

GORDON Scott Douglas December 31, 1969 - October 25, 2013

With deep sorrow and heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Scott Douglas Gordon at his home in Surrey, BC, due to heart failure. Scott was raised on the family farm near Carbon, AB. Always willing to lend a hand, he proved himself a worthy asset to the daily operations. He participated in the 4H program and enjoyed riding his dirt bike as well as playing minor hockey in Beiseker. It wasn’t long before he developed an interest in mechanics and could often be found tinkering on one of his cars or helping Dad perform repairs on some piece of machinery. Scott attended Carbon School in his elementary years and went on to graduate from Acme High School in 1987, before moving to Drumheller to seek full time employment, which he found at the Ralston Plastic Factory. He remained there for several years before being drawn to the west coast, God’s country as he called it. Taking up residence in Abbotsford, BC, he would meet his future wife, Denise Anthony. They married in 1994. Scott adored her daughter, Brooke, and adopted her as his own before fathering twin boys, Kyle and James. He continued the remainder of his career as a finishing carpenter in the lower mainland and Kelowna area. Scott was a hard worker who took pride in his accomplishments and would often send pictures of his latest work back home. He had a big heart and challenged life head on through any hardship that may stand in his way of providing for his loved ones. Scott was predeceased by his father Jack in 2010. Scott leaves to mourn his mother Bonnie of Drumheller, AB, his wife Denise, daughter Brooke, grandson Zachary, sons James and Kyle of Abbotsford, BC, brothers Colin (Treena), of Blackfalds, AB and James (Amanda), of Drumheller, AB, nephews Joel, Anthony, Caleb and niece Paige, aunt Dixie (Ken) McLeod of Delta, BC and countless cousins, friends and extended family. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Knox United Church, 195 3rd Ave E., Drumheller, AB., with Reverend Jean Udall officiating. Donations may be made in Scott’s memory to the Heart and stroke Foundation 200-119 14th Street NW Calgary, AB T2N 1ZK. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements (403 823 2666).

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, Joseph Berlando. He left this world suddenly and peacefully on October 28, 2013. He is pre-deceased by his dear wife, Maria (Wally). He is survived by his sons Timothy, Robert, Edward and Brian(Kim), and by his beloved grandchildren Michael, Lauren, Corey, Ryan, Danielle and Benjamin. He was born in Drumheller, the son of hardworking immigrants. His first job was in the coal mines of Rosedale, alongside his father. He became a teacher and worked in tiny Wayne, Alberta at his first job, where he then became principal of the school. He subsequently continued his teaching career in Lethbridge, but found his true calling in his career at the Alberta Teacher’s Association in Edmonton, where he worked for over three decades. He was deeply committed to teaching and the teaching profession, and took immense pride in the bargaining that he did to help give the teachers of this province a better life, working long hours to come to fair agreements time and again. Even after his retirement, he continued to work for the Alberta Retired Teacher’s Association for several years. After Wally passed, he spent his final years in Calgary. Aside from his love for his family and his job, his great passion was music. Almost every weekend after work at the coal mine, he would be found playing his sax or clarinet for dances, sometimes with Wally joining as guest vocalist. He continued to play in bands throughout his career, and well into retirement. Even when his vision started to fail him, he still would play his clarinet by ear, and even joined a band through the CNIB in Calgary once he moved there. We will dearly miss his sentimental heart, his prowess at cribbage (several of his grandkids learned to be card sharks with his help), his love of good food and drink, and chuckling at his snoozes in his comfie chairs over the years. Special thanks to Rob’s partner, Tracy, and to the staff at the McKenzie Towne Retirement Residence for the care and concern they provided to Joe while he resided in Calgary. Please join us to celebrate his life at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, the Prayer Vigil to be held Sunday, November 3, at 7 pm and the funeral mass on Monday, November 4 at 10 am. Father James Hagel is the celebrant. Flowers gratefully declined. If you wish, donations in memory of Joe may be made to CNIB 15 Colonel Baker Place N.E. Calgary, AB T2E 4Z3 44p

Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist Kale done twice! I found that this recipe for roasted kale made a very large amount. I put the leftovers to good use by turning them into a kale salad. When I make salads, I like to marinate the kale for awhile to soften it. Having roasted it in this first dish, it was already the texture I prefer for a salad.

O E ne

Roasted Kale 2 big bunches of kale, washed, dried, stems removed, and torn into small pieces 1/2 teaspoon salt dash of black pepper 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 1/2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 2 medium carrots, diced into 1/4 inch pieces 1/2 medium onion, chopped

Heat the oven to 350. In a large bowl, toss the kale with the salt, pepper, olive oil, and vinegar. Rub this dressing into the kale until it’s wilted and tender. Add the carrots and onions to the bowl and toss. Dump the vegetables into a large casserole dish, cover and bake for an hour, uncover and cook for 15 more minutes. *The original recipe called for a whole onion. I found the onion to be overpowering and cut the amount in half. Day 2: Kale salad Into the leftover, refrigerated roasted kale, toss in some cooked, shelled edamame, pine nuts (or sunflower seeds), sliced mushrooms, and hearts of palm moons or slices. Judge the amounts according to how much kale you have leftover. You can also add some mixed greens, if you like. Since the kale was already roasted in balsamic vinegar, I used that as my salad dressing flavor. Just drizzle the salad with a mix of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. There you have it – two days of very nutritious accompaniments to any meal.

Aquaplex faces two month closure for HVAC upgrades Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Avid swimmers in Drumheller will have to hang up their towels for the next two and a half months. The Drumheller Aquaplex will be shutting down on November 4 and is scheduled to reopen January 18. During the shutdown, the Aquaplex’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system will receive a major overhaul. “These are long overdue improvements to the Aquaplex. We know it’ll inconvenience our users for some time. Our preference would have been to do the work while both the indoor and outdoor pools were in use, but the contractor couldn’t make that window,” said Paul Salvatore, Director of Community Services for the Town of Drumheller. The intention of the upgrades is to improve the air quality of the building. “They are really extensive air handling upgrades. It’ll increase the quality of the air, in particular, deal with the humidity and air flow levels. It’ll make it a much more comfortable environment for users and staff,” said Salvatore. Council awarded the contract for upgrades at the September 23 meeting of Town Council to Dee Jay Plumbing & Heating Ltd. for $361,853.10. Residents with passes to the Aquaplex are being encouraged to stop by the Badlands Community Facility (BCF). Aquaplex passes will be accepted at the BCF during the shutdown. “If they have a pool-only pass we’ll honour that at the BCF. There are people who just use the pool, so maybe this will give them an opportunity to try something different with their routine and do some

cross-training. Ideally, we don’t want to stop service, but luckily, we have a great facility and the arena,” said Salvatore. After the upgrades are complete, Salvatore hopes plans can be made to bring in a new water slide. “Once we get past this, then down the road we can look at more fun things, like replacing the water slide. We’ll be looking at options as we go into this session of council. Hopefully we’ll get some plans in place and involve the public in determining what the final design will be,” said Salvatore. “A lot of people have commented they miss that feature, but one step at a time. For now we’ll focus on the HVAC upgrades and then the water slide as soon as we can after that.”

Back-to-back wins for Midget Raptors

Residents will only have a few more days to enjoy the Drumheller Aquaplex before it closes on Monday November 4 for an overhaul of the building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. It is expected the upgrade will be completed early in the new year and the Aquaplex will reopen on January 18.

The Drumheller Midget Raptors had a huge weekend, winning back-to-back games. On Saturday they won 8-3 over Siksika, then followed up with a 5-2 win over Oyen the following day. The wins propelled the team up the standings to being tied for second place and shy just one point of first place. During the previous weekend, the Raptors had two tied games versus Medicine Hat (3-3) and Vulcan (4-4). Tonight, they face Kneehill at home at 7:15 p.m. inSide photo by Michael James

Ouellette comes home to finish junior career Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller Dragons fans may have recognized one of the team’s newest players in recent weeks. Trent Ouellette, a native to Three Hills and Drumheller, returned to the Dragons early in October to ďŹ nish the ďŹ nal year of his junior hockey career. He had been playing for the WHL Regina Pats the past three seasons, where he amassed 19 goals and 31 assists in 194 games. “I thought it would be a better opportunity here and I wanted to play my last junior season close to home,â€? said Ouellette. “It’s been great so far. Brian (Curran, head coach and general manager) has helped out with the transition and has been a great coach. I like being able to play at home in front of my family.â€? Ouellette has wasted no time

making an impact with the Dragons. In nine games, he has eight goals and four assists. He has also been named team captain. “It was deďŹ nitely an honour to be given that role,â€? said Ouellette. Ouellette spent his Grade 11 and 12 years at Drumheller Composite High School after moving here from Three Hills. In that time, he started his junior hockey career and soon found himself in Regina. “I played a few games with the Dragons when I was 16, then I got picked up by Medicine Hat and then traded to Regina. It was a surprising change, but you have to go where they tell you to go,â€? said Ouellette. Even though he’s only been back in Drumheller a short time, he feels the change was well worth it. “It’s probably the most tightknit group I’ve ever played with.

Brian preaches we need to be tight on and o the ice to have success on the ice. All the guys have been great,â€? said Ouellette. “I’ve already learned more from Brian in the past three weeks than I have in the past three years. He’s one of the smartest coaches in the league,â€? At 20-years-old, this will be Ouellette’s ďŹ nal year in junior hockey. He’s hoping to use his time here to plan the next steps of his career. “Coming back here gives me an opportunity to talk to some universities. I’ve talked to a few, so next year I’m looking to play university hockey somewhere in Canada. It’ll be nice to still be able to play and start on a career path. I’ve been looking at the sports side of things, like sports pyschology,â€? said Ouellette. “But, I deďŹ nitely wouldn’t say no if any pro teams wanted Trent Ouellette, who was raised in Three Hills and Drumheller, returned to the Valley to play for the Dragons early in October. me.â€? Ouellette has already made his presence known, racking up eight goals and four assists in only nine games, and has been named team captain. inSide photo by Michael James
