The fundraising efforts for the Badlands Community Facility got another boost Tuesday morning. The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce delivered its third $50,000 installment to the BCF Fundraising Campaign. The donation is part of the Chamber’s $250,000 commitment to the facility and two more $50,000 installments will be delivered in the next two years. “We will continue on with our annual payments. The last one will be in 2014 to fulfill our $250,000 commitment,” said Heather Bitz, general manager of the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce. With the commitment, the Chamber of Commerce is one of the facility’s top sponsors. “We’re proud to help out in such a big way. We’re happy to see the facility up and opera-

In the spirit of community, residents will be scouring their neighbourhoods on November 29 to help other neighbours at the annual food driver. This one night blitz is The Salvation Army’s major food drive and the donations that come in help supply the food bank for a good portion of the coming year. This week, The Salvation Army dropped hundreds of red grocery bags into the mail. These bags are for residents to pack and leave on their doorstep. This way volunteers are able
to easily identify donations for the food drive, making collection that much easier. The blitz starts at 6 p.m. and volunteers will be combing Drumheller neighbourhoods from Nacmine to Rosedale. There will also be volunteers canvassing Morrin, Munson and Carbon. To volunteer, simply head to one of the predetermined muster points and head out to help. BCF fundraising campaign chair Jeff Hall hopes the donation will help build the momentum needed to move forward. “It’s an amazing facility and the usage is great. It’s something we need to continue to support,” said Hall. “It’s great to receive it [the donation]. Hopefully, when it’s visible in the community like this, it will remind people the importance of finishing the fundraising efforts.” To date, the fundraising campaign has received roughly $3.3 million in donations and commitments since campaigning began sev-

Alberta Transportation reviews contractor response following storms

While often in Alberta the weather is so fleeting it is difficult to pin down, however last week’s blast of snow made it clear that winter driving season is upon the valley. With the winter comes potentially hazardous road conditions, and this has spurred concerns about the shape of the highways around Drumheller. Earlier this year Carillion Canada assumed the role of maintenance contractor for the area provincial highways after winning the contract. Before this, Ledcor took care of the area highways. According to Tony Chelick operations manager for Alberta Transportation, the company has hired a number of new staff members and this was their first winter test. “The first few winter storms this year were quite severe and taxed Carillion’s local resources. Going forward they are well capable of performing necessary winter highway maintenance,” said Chelick. He said through GPS they are able to monitor where and when plows are on the road. This information is reviewed, and the work must be up to par. “Post winter storm reviews are conducted between Alberta

It’s pretty hard to get through a grey cup game without some fabulous foods to add to the excitement! I thought I’d choose a good old stand-by that is always a hit. It’s a recipe everyone wants to take home with them. That is- if they don’t already have it! I think this is the most requested one I own – I’m always getting calls from people who end up craving it on the spur of the moment. Everyone has their own little variations and it’s a recipe you will hone to your own liking after making it a few times, too. Following my version of the recipe, I will give some simpler variations with less ingredients. I always go overboard on cheeses and sauces – this dip is fine with less. I didn’t give measurements for the ingredients. This is a dish you simply go with what looks good to you and it will work out just the way you like it.

Buffalo Chicken Dip
Spread a package of cream cheese on the bottom of a baking dish. (I use a 9” round). Next, you can use leftover chicken, cooked breasts, canned chicken, rotisserie chicken, packaged chicken breast pieces from the deli – endless possibilities. I like to marinate the chicken in hot sauce first, but if you are making this on the spot, simply layer the chicken on the cream cheese then pour the hot sauce over. I use the Frank’s Buffalo wing sauce, but again – endless possibilities when it comes to the hot sauces that are out there now, too. Now, spread a layer of grated mozzarella cheese (or Monterrey Jack, Colby or Italian blend)

Pour Blue Cheese dressing over that. Drizzle a little more hot sauce, sprinkle with grated cheddar cheese, then pour Ranch Dressing over. A little more hot sauce and finally, crumbled blue cheese. Bake at 350 for about ½ hour. Serve crackers, tortilla scoops and celery sticks to dip. Variations - use only cheddar (or one particular type) cheese and Ranch dressing. - melt all the ingredients together on stove top, pour into casserole and bake. - cook in a slow cooker. - use lighter cheese and yogurt to make a healthier version.

I was born in Drumheller, moved away for several years, and then moved to Michichi in 2006. What do you like most about the area? The cohesiveness of the communities around here . What is the coolest place you’ve travelled to? I went to the Oregon coast in 1990 and 1991 on a biking trip. It’s beautiful and really peaceful. There’s a book in the library about the top biking trips in the world and I’ve done four of them so far. If you could travel through time, when and where would you go? Back to the 1940’s and 1950’s. From the stories my grandparents told, it seemed like communities back then were really close-knit. Conceptually it’s appealing, but probably not very glamorous. What three things would you bring to a deserted island? Some matches, an axe, and I think I’ve become too attached to my iPhone. What is one thing you could eat for the rest of your life? My wife’s lasagna. Favourite movies/tv shows? The Mob Doctor is very interesting. I really like Forrest Gump. What’s on your playlist these days? It’s pretty consistent. The Dynos travelled to Brooks to compete to be named zone champions and earn a spot in provincials. The girls started off the tournament strong, winning their first two matches against Banff and Holy Cross Schools. Their third match they lost against the eventual tournament winners, Strathcona High School. The following morning they lost to Brooks, which put the team in a tie for third place. The tiebreaker, for third place overall at zones, was against Holy Cross. The match consisted of a single game. “The girls came out on fire and made light work of that game. They showed they were capable of playing at a much higher level,” said Heather Colberg, assistant coach of the Dynos. The final match for the girls came against a squad from Black Diamond. The Dynos won the first game of the match 24-18 and then lost the second by a narrow 26-24. The Dynos hopes came down to one game, but they could not hold on and lost. Their season came to and end. The Dynos had a challenging season, but qualified for zones after placing third in regionals the previous weekend. The coaches were proud of the team’s performance. “The past two weekends they’ve played the best they have all season. We’re really proud of how the girls played at regionals and zones. They left everything on the court,” said Dawn Sullivan, head coach of the Dynos. For a few of the members of the Dynos, this is their final year, as they graduate in the coming spring. “Our only wish is that this group would have been together longer as you came together so well in the past few weeks,” said Colberg. “We have never been more proud to say we coached them in their grade 12 year. We saw an amazing amount of growth, leadership and teamwork.”

Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins says while the season to be merry is impending, he hopes residents also make sure they are safe behind the wheel. The Christmas season is no longer the peak time for casualty collisions involving alcohol but, it is a time of celebration, and that adds to the possibility of increased drinking and driving. “We are getting in to that time period where Christmas parties and celebrations are becoming the norm and we can’t say enough about people planning their way home,” said Hopkins. He said this means making sure revelers have a way home, whether it be a designated driver, having someone sober picking you up or taking a cab for example. Drivers who may think about getting behind the wheel after attending a celebration have another consideration. Alberta has strengthened its impaired driving rules. “Bear in mind now a reading from a roadside screening devise has more consequences. It will mean a seizure if you are caught over 0.05 (blood alcohol content). Last year it meant losing your license for 24 hours. Now you are going to lose your license and you are going to lose your vehicle for three days for the first time,” said Hopkins. He said with time and circumstance permitting the Drumheller RCMP will be conducting more check stops. “In some detachments they will say ‘do one check stop a night,’ I don’t go to that extent, I tell them that check stop will be made when time and circumstances permit…there will be an increase,” said Hopkins.

A couple of weeks ago, a car salesman (who shall remain nameless, to protect his innocence), called me, asking what colour car I would like. I had made mention of a certain model, and he said that the dealership was putting in an order for one. He called me because they were ordering it in black, and he wanted to know what colour I would prefer. I told him not to order anything speciďŹ cally for me, but that I thought that red was a good colour. I’d been reading in the car magazines about this car, and everyone wrote glowingly in their praise. There was something however that bothered me about the vehicle. After the phone call, I went online to get the address of the vehicle manufacturer’s corporate headquarters. As I said, I had read several car magazines, and all had good reviews. I however, noticed a couple of things that did not sit well with me. First , the gas mileage. The car is EPA rated at 23 city/ 32 highway, with a range of about 360 miles. (For those of you who would chide me for not using metric, the next time you ask about fuel economy, just say “kilometerageâ€?, go ahead. I dare you.) The car that I am driving right now is EPA rated at 24 city/ 30 highway, with a range of 396 miles, and is 10 years old. With the new model, I would lose 1 mpg around town (where I do most of my driving), and gain only 2 mpg on the highway. But here’s the kicker, the new model is bigger in every dimension, with more horsepower. The only thing that was made smaller was the fuel tank! My car-13.2 gallons (50 liters), the new model-12.2 gallons That is what prompted my call to headquarters. I e-mailed corporate headquarters seeking the rationale behind downsizing the fuel tank. I got the standard reply one gets from a large corporation: “Thank you for your interest, we appreciate our customers efforts to contact us, blah, blah, blahâ€?. I wrote back that I had not received a satisfactory answer to my inquiry. A reply came from a dierent person, in a dierent department: “The needs of our customers are paramount, and anything we can do in the future, please contact usâ€?. For a third time I wrote, asking if anyone, in any of their oďŹƒces had any idea why the gas tank was made smaller. Of course I got nothing but more of the same. I ďŹ nally wrote back, saying that I would ask the people at MOTOR TREND magazine, or CAR and DRIVER, that they would know, or at least make an eort to ďŹ nd out, and that when I found out, I would e-mail corporate headquarters with the answer.

Raptors play in memory of friend in Charmont Memorial Tournament Michael James | inSide Drumheller
The stands were packed at the Drumheller and Morrin arenas when teams from all over the province came down to play in the Charmont Memorial Tournament this past weekend. Two teams from Drumheller, the Yavis and Encana atom Raptors, rose to the top of their respective pools in the tournament. The Encana Raptors, who played in the B pool ended the weekend as champions. “They won the B ďŹ nal 5-4 over Okotoks on Sunday. It was a back and forth tension ďŹ lled game,â€? said Paul Richard, head coach of the Encana Raptors.
“Both sides were really happy the teams were very competitive and it wasn’t a blow out either way. It came down to the last two minutes of the game. The kids tried really hard. The coaches are proud of their eort.â€? The Encana Raptors started o the tournament on the right foot, winning their ďŹ rst game. They ran into trouble and lost their next two, but managed to bounce back and earn a spot in the ďŹ nals. The Yavis Raptors made it to the A ďŹ nals, but were bested by a tough squad from Wetaskawin. “It went very well. We made it to the A ďŹ nals, but lost a close game,â€? said Tony Pliva, head coach of the Yavis Rap-
tors. “They are in a different association than we are. It’s sometimes diďŹƒcult to get teams of the same caliber and they were a little better.â€? The Yavis Raptors opened the tournament with a big win, but lost their second game. They then battled back to make it to the ďŹ nals. For the Yavis Raptors the weekend was a chance to bond. “It was a really good team bonding weekend. The kids played ďŹ ve games under 36 hours and spent a lot of time together. They really came together. It was the best thing that could happen,â€? said Pliva. The tournament was created in memory of Chris and his son John Charmont who were
