inSide Community facility to host STREETERS 2013 Alberta Chamber Christmas is fast approaching and of Commerce AGM decorations have been appearing all over, so inSide Drumheller asks: “When do you put up your Christmas tree?”
Elaine Johnson “I don’t put it up until Christmas Eve and I don’t take it down until the 12 days of Christmas is over.”

While it is more than a year away, the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to hosting the province in 2013. Last week the Chamber made good on its fundraising pledge for the Badlands Community Facility. They are looking forward to utilizing the facility to its fullest extent hosting the 2013 Alberta Chamber of Commerce Provincial Conference and Policy Session. “The facility is going to be a wonderful enhancement to the Drumheller valley and really good for business,” said Chamber board vice president John Shoff. “I think it is going to open a lot of doors to a lot of opportunities to hold larger events.” One of the events is the 2013 conference. He explains they made a bid for the 2012 conference, but there were concerns as to whether the facility would be completed. The next year they got the nod. “This gives a year for planning
and we know the facility will be up and running strong by this time,” said Shoff. The AGM is slated for May 1618, 2013 and will attract more that 200 delegates as well as possibly family members. While there will be the formal business of the event, the delegates will also get a chance to see all the valley has to offer. “We usually put on a community related package, so you will have the AGM related meetings, but there will also be community events to showcase the valley,” said Shoff. “In our discussion we found the hardest part of planning the AGM is going to be narrowing down all the different things we can show people. There are just so many things we can do.” Delegates will get a sneak peak of what to expect at the 2013 AGM at this coming year’s conference in Spruce Grove. The Drumheller Chamber will be sponsoring a breakfast, providing attendees with an idea of what they could expect.

Shandera makes first court appearance Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller An agent for Nathan Shandera, a correctional supervisor charged with property offense, appeared on his behalf last Friday in provincial court in Drumheller. The case related to the alleged theft of money and video cameras from the Drumheller Institution. The latter ended up for sale on e-Bay. Shandera was charged
with possession of stolen property, possession of proceeds of crime and theft under $5,000. On Tuesday November 22 at about 10:30 p.m., Badlands EMS, Drumheller RCMP and the Drumheller Fire Department responded to a single vehicle accident on Highway 56, south of Rosedale passed the crest of the hill. It appears a southbound SUV lost control and entered the ditch and rolled. An occupant of the vehicle appears to have been ejected. Successful season for Morgan Jayne Project Patrick Kolafa | InSide Drumheller
The Morgan Jayne Project has had an exciting winter with a string of successes. Recently, its campaign to fill the Christmas wish list was met head on by residents who polished off the list. They were able to send nearly two and a half tons of packages to the make a brighter Christmas and a brighter future for some of the poorest of the poor in the western hemisphere. The gifts have arrived on the Island in time for its annual Christmas party. While it was a monumental task, the support for the project and its main focus of supplying infant formula to help stop the transmission of HIV and AIDS from mother to child is also strong. In October volunteers spear-
headed a grass roots campaign to make sure no penny was lonely. It caught fire and there were donation boxes at businesses all over the valley collecting loose change. In all, the campaign raised $540.
APPLICATION DEADLINE DECEMBER 5TH
The Morgan Jayne Project's Lonely Penny Campaign was a great success raising $540. The project has had a busy season and there was good news last week as the gifts collected for the Christmas wish list arrived in Roatan. photo submitted
Last weekend a brave contingent of volunteers had the opportunity to host a barbecue and collect the proceeds. The event raised $175, despite temperatures dropping to -22 degrees Celsius.

Abuse allegations arise at PBI Patrick Kolafa | InSide Drumheller
Last week, allegations of abuse at Prairie Bible Institute (PBI) became known to the media after a survivor came forward with her story. PBI in Three Hills was established in 1922 and is now facing allegations dating back several years. The Calgary Herald reported that Linda Fossen, 53, a former student filed a complaint with the RCMP alleging years of sexual abuse at the hands of her father, a former employee of the school. She attended her class reunion in 2006 and came forward with her story of abuse, and found that she was not alone. She published a book on her experience and says she has since heard stories from about 80 former students. On November 15, Mark Maxwell, president of PBI issued a statement on the institution’s web site. It says the school will cooperate with the RCMP. “To the extent of our information, the incidents in question date back several decades, and the individuals purportedly involved are no longer at Prairie. Nevertheless, we feel it is appropriate to respond and to emphasize our commitment to seeking truth and transparency,” states the letter. The institution has selected a board member to be the point of contact of the school for individuals who feel they have been abused by a Prairie staff member while enrolled at the school, and prefer not to take the allegation to the police. “The board recognizes the seriousness of any potential allegations and would desire to achieve healing and reconciliation,” states the letter.

Age: 60. Employer: I’m self employed. I teach private voice lessons and I’m the director of Kids Sing Music project. What did you do before? I taught at the Drumheller Composite High School for 23 years, and before that in Stoney Plain. I taught mostly choral music and drama and then a lot of little odds and ends. My first teaching job was in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, teaching typing and book keeping. How long have you been living near Drumheller? 25 years. Where are you from originally? I grew up near Watford City, North Dakota. Then I moved to Saskatchewan in 1973. What do you like most about the area? The chinooks in winter. Anything you would change? The cold winters. What are some things you do around the community? Besides my work, I am
the president of Kaleidoscope Theatre and some work in my church. I understand you’re playing Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music. I am! What are some of your top travel destinations? One of my highlights was a trip to Norway last summer. I really want to cruise the Mediterranean and would love to go to South America. If you could travel through time, where and when would you like to visit? I would like to go back 15 years ago and visit my dad. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you bring? That’s tough because I have three kids and a husband. We can lump them under family. Ok, so then my family, my cellphone, and some water. What three words would you use to describe yourself? Oh my, that’s tough. I would say creative, good listener, and a bit of a scatterbrain.

If you could hang out with anyone, who would it be and what would you do? The person who I loved to hang out most with is my mom and we would go shopping together. What are some of your favourite movies?: My favourite type of movies are psychological thrillers. I really like Schindler’s List. If you were making a movie about your life, who would you want to play the part of you? Cate Blanchett. What are your favourite songs? Oh that’s really tough because of my musical background. I have such a wide spectrum of music I listen to, but I would have to say Beethovan’s Moonlight Sonata, Time to Say Goodbye by Andrea Bocelli, and the title theme for Schindler’s List. Any words of wisdom? I would have to say that when you search out your life, don’t follow the path to please someone else, follow the path that pleases you.

Badlands Search and Rescue will be looking for volunteers during an information session to be held at the Rockyford Community Centre on Saturday, November 26, at 10 a.m. So far there have been roughly 15 people who have expressed interest in volunteering for Badlands Search and Rescue. More are needed. “If we get a lot more, it would be fantastic, said Scott Campbell, head of Badlands Search and Rescue. “We rely heavily on a large number of people to
ďŹ nd lost persons quickly.â€? Badlands Search and Rescue is not available for call at this time, as it has yet to be certiďŹ ed, a process that could take a year. Neighbouring search and rescue organizations continue to watch over the badlands area. The push is on to have volunteers trained and ready for when Badlands Search and Rescue is certiďŹ ed. Training involves learning the basics of search and rescue, such as navigation, ropes, survival camping, lost person behaviour, scenarios, and
more. Volunteers will also be trained in ďŹ rst aid and CPR, and the instinct command system level 100. There will also be opportunities to do practical training. Volunteers will be sent along to work with neighbouring search and rescue organizations during their operations. Persons desiring to become involved with the lifesaving enterprise are encouraged to attend the information meeting. For further information contact Scott Campbell at badlandsar@gmail.com.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Horoscopes ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, sometimes you just have to let a person go. If there's no getting this person to come around to your way of thinking, it's best to devote your energy elsewhere.
LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, this week you may find yourself as the center of attention, and frankly, you will probably love every moment of it. Just don't let all the attention go to your head.
TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, you have nothing to hide, so speak your mind when a family member asks for your two cents this week. Just keep in mind he or she may not be ready for what you have to say.
SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, sometimes it can be difficult for you to express the things that are in your heart, but this week you further your relationship with some much-needed conversation.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, think about how you want the week to go and then focus your energy in that direction. It's amazing what a little mental energy and some help from the stars can do. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Lately it seems like you're working very hard at not being happy, Aquarius. All it takes is a little change in perspective to turn it all around. Capricorn plays a key role. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, go on an old-fashioned date if you've been in a relationship for some time. It could add a spark that you need.

Sprinkle with salt and pepper and blue cheese. Roll from short side and secure with toothpicks. Combine sauces. Dip chicken in sauce then roll in crumbs. Bake 400x30 minutes, seam side down. Drumheller MS Society welcomes new Walk Coordinator Michael James | inSide Drumheller
QUOTE
The Drumheller and Area Chapter Multiple Sclerosis Society held its appreciation night on Thursday, November 17, at Whifs Flap Jack House. Attendees were treated to a dinner generously provided by Whifs. The night was also an occasion to welcome the new MS Walk coordinator Dianne Snyder. Dave Watson, who had previously coordinated the MS Walk, stepped down after years of dedication to help raise funds for MS research.

“The research keeps getting closer and closer to finding a cure."
The Enerflex MS Walk is the main fundraiser for the MS Society and it accounts for nearly all of the money raised. A portion of the money raised goes to research, but the majority stays in Drumheller to provide assistance to those with MS. There are roughly 75 people in the valley with the disease. Multiple Sclerosis is a neurological disease where the body’s own immune system attacks the insulating sheaths around nerve cells. A wide range of physical and cognitive symptoms can accompany the disease. So far, the cause is unknown. Alberta has the highest incidence of MS in the world. The next Enerflex MS Walk will be held on May 6, 2012. Donations or sponsoring teams can be done through www.mswalks.ca. “The research keeps getting closer and closer to finding a cure,” said Deb Wynia, a member of the MS Society.

Winter Containers They can be done for Christmas or for the winter season or both. You can use any kind of container as long as it’s resistant to frost. No clay pots - they will break for sure. First you have to weigh the container down, you can use sand, washed rock, pea gravel, bricks in the bottom of larger containers or just leave the dirt from the summer plantings in the container and use it for the base. It may not be heavy enough on its own but you’ll be able to tell if the wind is going to be able to take it across the yard or not. Gathering the materials for the container can be a lot of fun. If you enjoy walking in nature you will be surprised at what you’ll find to be able to fill the container. Keeping proportion in mind, the arrangement at its tallest point should be at least two thirds the height of the container. So let’s go for our walk, we can find the following along the river, creek, backyard, ditches, fields etc. Look for Rose Hips, Golden Willow, Red Willow, Pinecones, Buffalo Berries if the berries are actually still attached, as well as Service Berries, Bittersweet, Sumac clusters, Cotoneaster branches if berries are still attached, Milkweed Pods and possibly even Field Dock. Anything that’s going to add a different texture or give you height variations is good. You can also include fruit - pineapple
is the sign of hospitality and if you put it as well as oranges, apples, pomegranates, or lemons on a thin stick they will keep outdoors for at least a couple of months. Once you have collected all your wild stuff, then you can get some boughs either from someone who's had to trim a tree back or from local garden centers. You should be able to find a variety of greens that will give you a good base or even ones that may give you some height. There are also some other choices that you should be able to get from the garden centers or florists, such as Corkscrew Willow, Holly, Magnolia, and Eucalyptus. The staff again will be able to give you suggestions on what to use and how to arrange it. I have always saved old Christmas decorations, beads, strings of popcorn, to add an old time feel, and if you need lights they have solar ones as well as plug in ones that would add the finishing touch. Also if you have hanging baskets you can also decorated them - just take the old plants out and fill with your collection of stuff. The dirt will hold everything in place and if you make sure its damp then it will freeze to hold everything that much better. You may have to take it inside the house to warm up if it’s already frozen once. Well, good luck and I will be checking around town to see what folks have done. Jackie Friedley

Titanmania builds for Friday Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
Titanmania is sweeping the valley as the team prepares for its appearance at the Alberta Bowl this Friday in Lethbridge. The squad earned its way into the finals after a strong season, and the excitement has been building every step of the way. A fan bus has been commissioned to head to the game and there are still some spaces. To get on the bus, contact the main office at DVSS. “The boys spoke with me in the hall last night and said how much it meant to them to have the stands full of Drumheller fans to support. I’d love to have a crowd of 45 of them with pompoms in hand,” said Gina Tipman, who is organizing the charter. Those who cannot make the trek to Lethbridge this weekend can still see the game online. The Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) will be streaming the games coming up this weekend. Michelle Ross, ASAA deputy director, says they are in the final arrangements and will be going live during the games. To watch the game go to provincals.asaa.ca, and follow the “Alberta Bowl” link. There has been an outpouring of support for the team. Throughout town, there are Titans signs on cars and in business windows, and the squad appreciates it. “The community has been really great, the support from the businesses, the people coming to the games to watch has been phenomenal,” said Patti Richardson of the Drumheller Titans. She has volunteered with the team for years and her son played on the 2007 squad that went to the final. “It was really special for the community to come out and support the boys in 2007; it was great to prove to the community that there is not just hockey. There is soccer, there is football. This time around, it has been great, the businesses in town have been so supportive.” "It was good to see them go in '07, and it is good to see them go now. They have worked really hard for it.” Those planning to get on the bus can reserve a seat for $20, and the deadline to secure a spot is today (Thursday). The bus is slated to head out at 3 p.m. on Friday. Tipman said they are hoping some community-minded businesses will help sponsor the bus to make it affordable for fans and the organization. For more information on sponsorship opportunities contact Tipman at 403-820-3044 or email drumhelleryoga@yahoo.ca.

Bobcats. The Bobcats prevailed with a 1-0 victory. Emotions were high, with penalties pervasive throughout the game. The Dragons had nine power plays and the Bobcats seven, but neither team could capitalize. In the third period, seven game misconducts were handed out. On Friday, November 18, the Fort McMurray Oil Barons spilled into town and handed the Dragons a 4-1 defeat. Both teams were closely matched in shots, but Oil Barons goalie Tanner Jaillet was able to track all but one shot. Kenton Levesque, with the assistance of Kevin McMillan, scored the only Dragons goal at 10:28 into the third period. Once again the Dragons were unable to take advantage of their five power plays. The game on Saturday, November 19, was a closer contest. The Dragons out shot the visiting Canmore Eagles and scored three goals, but lost 5-3. The Eagles opened the scoring with two goals in the first period at 10:20 and

The Eagles took the lead again with a short handed goal, but the Dragons forward Spencer Samuel swiftly tied the game again with an assist going to Josh Kluck. The third period spelled the end for the Dragons, and the Eagles scored a power play goal at 5:41 to take the lead. Less than a minute later, the Eagles soon expanded their lead by two. As with the other two games last week, Saturday’s game was filled with penalties. However, the Dragons remained silent on the power play once again. The Dragons were at home again on Wednesday, November 23, when they the Grande Prairie Storm. The Storm have some momentum, with two wins this past weekend against the Sherwood Park Crusaders.
