OPINION Province allows municipalities to set playground zone rules Michael James | inSide Drumheller
The Alberta Government is proposing new legislation that would allow municipalities more control over their roads. Bill 32, the Enhancing Safety on Alberta Roads Act, will amend the Traffic Safety Act and the Highway Development Protection Act. The changes would allow municipalities to set the rules for playground zones within their boundaries. One issue facing Drumheller’s highways does not seems to be addressed by the changes. The Town has been working with St. Anthony’s School to lobby the province to create a school zone on North Dinosaur Trail, which is considered a provincial highway, near St. Anthony’s School. “When the minister (Ric McIver) was here he said he would look at it, but we haven’t heard

The Town is hoping the changes will allow them to address what is transported through North Dinosaur Trail. “I wrote them a letter, because I’ve heard concerns about dangerous substances being transported on Dinosaur Trail. The Community Garden in Drumheller is on the move and hopes to put down firm roots this coming spring. Previously, the Badlands Community Garden has operated a community garden on Newcastle Drive. DARTS generously allowed the society to set up a garden where residents could rent out a box to plant vegetables for the season. Patrice Wolf of the Society explains DARTS has designs on using the land they allowed the society to use, which means the Garden will have to be uprooted. The society has made arrangements to use a vacant parcel beside Big Country Dental Clinic near the Drumheller Post Office. “Dr. Lister and Dr. Fuh are going to lease us the yard next to their clinic,” said Wolf. “It is huge… it can handle at least as many boxes as we have now. Because it is such a public place we will have picnic tables, places for people to sit and maybe a shelter for people to get out of the sun.” The site has water and everything needed to make it a success. Wolf expects DARTS will still be heavily involved with the site, and they are looking at adding partners to the equation. “It is really positive moving forward,” said Wolf. She said they will be working throughout the winter to plan the next season, which includes advertising for the plots. They are looking at using the site not just as a place for a family to grow vegetables, but also to learn and teach. There are

Rufus is pretty calm, cool and collected, but I am more active, that is why my name is Scamper. We are both very curious and like to be held and cuddled, although Rufus likes it more than I do, because I like to run and play more. We have both been around other cats and dogs since we were born and like to play with them, too. We are black with some white spots, and got our Àrst shots already. The annual Music Festival is also one of the largest events within the area with 400 entries each year, spanning all the disciplines. There are entries in dozens of categories, from spoken word to school band, from musical theatre to instrumental recitals. Local music teachers are aware of the Provincial Syllabus, and it is available throughout December at the Drumheller Public Library and online with entry forms. Those wishing to participate do not have to be formal students. Anyone can sign up to compete. Drumheller students have done well over the years. Last year, 12 local students were recommended to go on and compete at provincial music festivals. Annually, the festival gives out in the area of $6,000 in scholarships The entry deadline for this year’s Music Festival is January 14. The festival would like to see more entries in the area of speech. This includes poetry, story telling and Bible recitation. You can choose the crust according to your personal preference – be it gluten-free, whole wheat, thin or thick – there are many options. Sun-dried tomato asparagus pizza Spread a thin coating of sundried tomato pesto onto your choice of precooked pizza crust. Top with sliced, blanched asparagus. Add chopped, cooked back bacon or prosciutto. Sprinkle with chunks of goat cheese (or crumbled feta). Bake at 375 for 10 -12 minutes.

A man who pleaded guilty to a rash of oilfield site break and enters was handed a conditional sentence order for two years. Stephen Barnes pleaded guilty to a slew of break and enters and thefts from oilfield sites in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, November 22. The court heard that
on February 10 of this year, Barnes broke into a rural oilfield yard near Didsbury. The RCMP stopped him and discovered copper wire and bolt cutters. He pleaded guilty to break and enter, mischief and possession of break in tools. Barnes was arrested by Three Hills RCMP on June 12. He was cooperative with RCMP and admitted that between December 30 and Febru-
ary 4, he broke into eight sites to steal copper wire in the Three Hills, Trochu, Elnora and Delburne areas. At six of these sites he stole items. In all, the materials that went missing had a value of between $19,000 and $34,000. The crown prosecutor and defense agreed on a two-year conditional sentence order. This means he will be serving his sentence outside an institution.
The first eight months of his sentence, he is to remain under house arrest. For the remainder of his sentence he is to abide by a curfew. He is also to make $12,600 of restitution on a schedule of monthly payments. Any failure to make a payment will result in Barnes having a court appearance in front of Judge Grieve.

An inmate at the Drumheller Institution was sentenced to 30 days in custody after he alerted health staff at the penitentiary that he had drugs stashed in an difficult to reach place. Randy Medwid appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on
Friday, November 22. He pleaded guilty to simple possession of drugs. The court heard how on March 15 of this year, Medwid went to the heath care unit at the penitentiary advising them he felt ill and had ingested two packages; one containing tobacco and one containing cannabis resin.
He was taken to the Drumheller Health Centre, where the packages had to be surgically removed from his digestive tract. When recovered, the cannabis resin had a weight of about 15 grams. Judge Grieve, when handing down his sentenced, told Medwid many would be inter-
ested in seeing him stay in jail until he paid back the thousands of dollars that tax payers spent on his surgery. In the end, Judge Grieve agreed with the federal prosecutor’s position and sentenced Medwid to 30 days consecutive to any other sentence he is currently serving.

DVSS student leaders plan provincial conference Michael James | inSide Drumheller
Students and staff at Drumheller Valley Secondary School are getting ready to host students from across the province next spring. From May 11-13, 2014, DVSS will host the annual Alberta Student Leadership Conference. “It’s a three day conference hosting students from all over Alberta. It’s an annual event and we undergo intensive leadership training through different seminars,” said DVSS student Maria Patterson, who is helping to organize the conference. Patterson attended last year’s conference and felt it is well worth the effort to bring it to Drumheller. “It was great and they’re always inter-
esting. I learned how to be a better leader and to voice my opinion,” said Patterson. Organizers are anticipating Drumheller will be packed with students. “Last year, there were about 1,400 students, but this year we’re thinking we’ll get about 700. It really depends on the school’s location,” said DVSS student Kortney Giffin, who is also helping organize. The student delegates will be shown the sights and sounds of the Valley. “They’ll be seeing our tourist attractions, staying in our hotels, and eating our food. They’ll be taking back a piece of Drumheller when they go home, so hopefully they’ll return with their families,” said Patterson. “It’s a perfect kick-off right before our tour-

Free basketball refereeing clinic Saturday Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
As hard as players practice and coaches work to develop skills, there would be no basketball season of it weren’t for referees. There will be a beginner referees clinic coming up this Saturday, November 30 at St. Anthony’s School. This is for people interested in oďŹƒciating basketball for the ďŹ rst time. Gavin Makse, who is facilitating the clinic, says there is no cost for the program and all participants need to bring is some clean, non-marking court shoes, something comfortable to wear on the court to run in, and an interest in
learning. He said there would be a classroom session looking at rules and protocols. There will also be an on-court session to learn the mechanics of oďŹƒciating and signals. The ďŹ nal part of the session will be on the court, actually oďŹƒciating a game. Makse says he hopes to have some players there to scrimmage. The team had some games when they played very well and everything came together and then they had some games when it just seemed that nothing was going right,â€? said Sullivan. Of the current roster, ďŹ ve Grade 12 players will be graduating next June. “We are looking to start the rebuilding process with new players but also have a core group of grade 11’s moving forward,â€? said Sullivan.
