OPINION Developer readies plans to create housing on old school field inSide Drumheller | inSideDrumheller.com

Michael James | inSide Drumheller

With kids no longer there, the field of the old St. Anthony’s School site has stood silent for over half a year. A developer is hoping to give new purpose to the field. Elektra Holdings, the company who currently owns the site land and building, are close to applying for and subsequently building houses on the empty field. “There are 2.54 acres that will be developed into 15 lots,” said Art James, an agent of Elektra Holdings, while addressing Town Council. “The subdivision will be applied for right away. We’re ready to go.” The original application to develop the field was made in late 2010. At the time, no definite plan was presented and it was suggested highdensity housing, such as apartments, would be built. However, the plan now, explained James, is to build 15 houses at the site. At the October 22

meeting of Town Council, the future of the site was debated in light of new factors regarding it. Since the original application was made nearly two years ago, Hope College and Clinic have moved into the school. One of the main concerns from the Drumheller Municipal Planning Commission was there would not be enough parking for students and staff. As a result, parking would overflow to the surrounding streets. “If Hope College goes, there wouldn’t be enough parking and people would have to park on the street. I’ve talked to residents and they feel the parking would be in front of their houses,” said Councillor Doug Stanford. “I want to see a subdivision over there, but I want to make sure we have enough parking before it goes through.” Elektra Holdings feels, with some work, there could be enough parking at the school if the portable on the northeast corner and the playground on the south side

you’re going to have 400 students in the first year,” said James. “The parking needs are met on site.” At the council meeting, a decision to extend the deadline for application of the subdivision was granted, with Councillors Stanford and Sharel Shoff opposed. The next step for Elektra Holdings will be to

apply for the subdivision of the land. After that, public input would be required on the project. “When we make formal application...at that time, the subdivision will have to advertise for public input,” said James.

Mayor observes burgeoning democracy in Ukraine Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Mayor Terry Yemen has returned home from an eye opening experience in the Ukraine where he served as an independent observer for the country’s election. Yemen was part of a

group of about 500 from Canada who went to the eastern European country during their election. He trained in Ottawa before heading overseas for about 10 days. The group was greeted and applauded by Prime Minister Steven Harper before they left on the mission.

“The bonds of friendship between Canada and Ukraine are strong and deep, and we are proud to support Ukrainians in their aspirations for a peaceful, democratic and prosperous society,” said the Prime Minister. “On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to commend participants in this electoral observer mission and thank Senator Andreychuk for accepting this important role.” It was an eye opening experience for Yemen. He has not travelled much and most often it was to holiday destinations. His time in the Ukraine was not in such an area. “There were some beautiful areas in the Ukraine, but the areas we were sent to were not,” said Yemen. The area he was deployed to was a community on the eastern border near Russia where coal mining was once the industry during the time of the Soviet Union. Today there is hardly any work for the residents and many live in simple precast concrete block

housing that was put in place for the workers. “Economically there was nothing there for the people,” he said. On the ground he was part of a four-person team, which included a second observer, who is a school teacher from Edmonton, and their guide and interpreter. Their role was as independent observers of the election. Often they were mistaken for international observers, who had a little more sway, but their role was to simply watch the process. They would go from polling station to poling station and would complete surveys before, during and after the election, asking if workers understood the process. During the election they would observe the process and watch for possible irregularities. At the end of the election they were to go to a polling station and observe its closing. During his time in the country he did spend some time in Kiev and says it was a beautiful city. He also saw first hand the breadbasket of

Europe, however where he acted as observer, the accommodations were basic. When their election responsibilities were finished they travelled by train back to the capital, and it was uncomfortable to say the least. While he was on the ground he found the experience out of his comfort zone, but in hindsight he recognizes the importance of his role in

assuring democracy in a county that has been independent for just over two decades. He said in some cases the electorate felt their vote didn’t matter, and in other cases he saw people bringing their children to the polls to show the importance of voting. About 60 per cent of the electorate voted. “The groundwork is there, but it is going to take some time,” he said.

Virtual Wall of Honour response “overwhelming” Wall to be shown at national Remembrance Day ceremony Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Canadians across the country have been sharing the memories and photos of their loved ones who served Canada for a new Remembrance Day initiative. The response, described by The Royal Canadian Legion

Dominion Command, was overwhelming. The Virtual Wall of Honour & Remembrance will be shown at the televised Remembrance Day ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The Virtual Wall will commence at roughly 9:45 a.m. and will last until 10:15 a.m. It will be viewable on The Royal Canadian Legion website, www.legion.ca. Many in Drumheller

responded as well, sending their photos and stories to be honoured at the national ceremony. The Drumheller Mail also received a strong response. Over thirty local families brought pictures and stories of their loved ones to The Mail offices, where staff assisted in sending them to be honoured in the Virtual Wall. “I thought it would be good to submit my brother. I think it’s a

great way to recognize my brother, so that’s why I sent his picture in,” said Ada Morrow. Morrow’s brother, Private Robert W.R. Goodfellow, served with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada during World War II. He was killed in action near Artona, Italy, on January 8, 1944. He was 24 when he died. Earlier this fall, Canadians were asked to send photos and stories

of those who served for use in a new Virtual Wall of Honour & Remembrance. Prior to the national Remembrance Day service at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, large video screens will display those who were submitted. The photos and stories will be “transformed into a dramatic presentation,” described a press release from the Royal Canadian Legion. The presentation

will be accompanied by Canadian singer-songwriter Terry Kelly, who will perform “A Pittance of Time” with the Ottawa Children’s choir. Services in Drumheller begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Badlands Community Facility on Sunday, November 11. A free bus service will pick residents up starting at 9:30 a.m. from Manor 1, Manor 2, Riverview Terrace, Keystone Estates, and Sunshine Lodge.

I asked for this recipe from a neighbor at our cabin this summer. She had entered it in our ethnic cook-off and served it with maple syrup. Her grandparents used to open it up and stuff it with a layer of fruit. The inside is custard-like. I also tried it with tomatoes and that was another delicious meal. A good, heavy pan works the best if you want it to puff up nicely.

Response poured in for The Royal Canadian Legion’s Virtual Wall of Honour & Remembrance over the past month. Many men and women from Drumheller, such as Michael Arthur O’Dwyer, pictured here, were submitted. O’Dwyer was a pilot in

the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. He enlisted in February 1943, survived the war, and passed away in February of 2001. photo submitted

his games in Calgary and I got a puck from him when the All Star game was there. I was wearing a Gretzky jersey and when he skated past he saw me, tapped on the glass, and tossed me a puck. What is one thing you could eat for the rest of your life? Tacos. Any hobbies? I‘ve bowled for ten years, played baseball since I was five, and gaming. I’m looking forward to doing some slopitch next year.

Favourite games? Sports games. I have all the NHL’s and Tiger Woods games since 2000. What would be your theme song? I’m a country guy, so I’d have to say Kenny Chesney’s I’ll be Back. Favourite movies? I love action packed movies, like Die Hard and Blade. Bruce Willis and Wesley Snipes are two of my favourite actors. What is one piece of technology you could not live without? I hate to say it, but I live on my phone. What is your most memorable childhood toy? My original Nintendo. What would you do with $1 million? I would take care of my family first, then I would use it to travel. What superpower would you want? Fly, then I could go somewhere warm and not have to pay. Any words of wisdom? Live every day like it’s your last.

Phil Currie to receive National science medal Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Dr. Phillip Currie is to be honoured with a national award. Media reports say Currie, who is now a professor at the University of Alberta, will be receiving the Royal Canadian Geographical Society Gold Medal this week in Ottawa. Canadian actor Dan Ackroyd will be presenting it. Currie is being recognized for his research into dinosaur group behaviour and migration patterns. Currie believes that, during the late Cretaceous period, North America and Asia were connected via a land bridge and that dinosaurs would migrate

between the two continents. Fossil assemblages in Alberta and Mongolia share many similarities in the kinds of dinosaurs present. Currie was one of the leads in creating the Royal Tyrrell Museum and, when it opened in 1985, became Curator of Dinosaurs. He left the Tyrrell in 2005 to be a professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta and was recently inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence. The Royal Canadian Geographical Society Gold Medal was ďŹ rst awarded in 1972. The award was established to recognize particular achievement by one or

more individuals in the general ďŹ eld of geography for a signiďŹ cant national or international event. Past recipients include astronaut Jerry Linenger and Alex Trebek.

Three community organizations got a sizeable boost thanks to the World’s Largest Dinosaur Legacy Fund. On Wednesday, November 7, Badlands Search and Rescue, Nacmine Community Hall Association, and the Drumheller Community Football Association were presented with donations to put towards their respective projects. Badlands Search and

Rescue was given $2,987 to put towards the purchase of an evacuation stretcher with wheels, an essential tool for rescuing anyone who is injured. The organization recently formed to provide search and rescue in the Drumheller, Hanna, and Strathmore areas. “We’re doing great. We’ve got our society status and are in the process of getting approved by Alberta Search and Rescue. We’ve been actively training for the

Time to keep your head down, it’s deer season. Anybody seen a deer? I’m kidding, that is a rhetorical question, everybody has seen a deer, in fact some people have deer bedding down in their back yards. Apparently deer are not dumb. It’s open season on them, it’s illegal to discharge a ďŹ rearm within town limits, and so they move into town, where it’s nice and safe. Of course there’s always a nice quiet bow and arrow. No noise, and less chance of doing major damage should you miss your intended target. For those lucky enough, you can bag one from your back deck. No sitting in some cold, uncomfortable tree stand for hours on end. In the meantime, please don’t feed the animals, they may become habituated (look it up, I had to). Last week I read a column in The Calgary Sun, written by Warren Kinsella. In it he referred to a couple of American Republican reps. as “scum of the earthâ€? and “less than human.â€? I took exception, and emailed him to tell him as much. It was not his feelings toward these men to which I took exception, that is between him and God. What I took exception to was the fact of his using such poor language. The Calgary Sun is known as a right-wing paper, and most of its columnists espouse a right-wing philosophy. Warren Kinsella is the lone man out. He’s a lawyer, consultant, and was Special Assistant to Jean Chretien. In a paper like the Sun, he stands out like a Pinko, or red thumb—your choice. Taking all of Mr. Kinsella’s accomplishments into account, you can only conclude that he is  very intelligent and very liberal, making him a prime target for those who post comments. I took it upon myself to tell Kinsella that someone of his intelligence, education and background had no need to use terms like “scum of the earth,â€? in order to deride someone. I don’t share Mr. Kinsella’s politics, but I read him anyway, just to get another slant on things. When I see someone who has the ability for better using this kind of language in a newspaper column, it grates on me. Funny thing, he emailed me to say thank you.

last six months,â€? said Guy Latour, a member of Badlands Search and Rescue who accepted the donation. “This donation will go a long way to getting us operational.â€? The Nacmine Community Hall Association was given $2,669. Plans are in the works to add a new swing set to the park and beautify it for years to come. If all goes well, the swing set should be complete this fall and new plants will be added next year. The cost of a new, eight foot swing set is roughly $7,000. The ďŹ nal World’s Largest Dinosaur Legacy Fund recipient was the Drumheller Community Football Association, which received $1,700. The money will be used for the purchase of a new line-painting machine. The World’s Largest Dinosaur Legacy Fund invests a portion of the money generated by the attraction and its giftshop into the community. “We are happy to give back to the community through the World’s Largest Dinosaur Legacy Fund. When the dinosaur was built, one of the goals was to give back to the community. We’ve been doing that for many years and we expect to keep doing so many years into the future,â€? said Heather Bitz, general manager of the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber of Commerce will open the application process again come February 2013. The Chamber is hoping to fund projects less than $3,000.

BCAVA supports Red Rose campaign Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

November is Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta and for years Big Country Anti-Violence Association (BCAVA) has been participating in the Red Rose Campaign. This year is no exception. On Tuesday, November 6, the BCAVA, assisted by volunteers from Grace House, delivered 260 roses to area

businesses and churches to raise awareness of family violence in the community. There is no charge for the rose, and it is not there to solicit funds. Organizers simply ask these institutions to display the rose in a prominent place. The red rose is in memory of women, children and men who have died as a result of family violence. The roses were distributed in Drumhell-

er and Drumheller communities including East Coulee, Rosedale and Wayne as well as Morrin, Munson and Delia. The Red Rose campaign in Drumheller has been well-supported for many years by HomeTown Realty, who provide financial support for purchasing the roses. This year, the association presented the business with a plaque in appreciation for its support.

Ouellette selected to take on Russians

Trent Ouellette was sleeted for an elite WHL team to play a top Russian Junior team in the Russia Subway Super Series. Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller hockey player has a chance to match his skills with some top calibre Russian players, he only hopes he’ll be healed in time. Trent Ouellette is in his third season with the Regina Pats and was having a break-out season. The centre man jumped out to being the top scorer for the team through 14 games. He is being noticed and was selected for an elite WHL team for the CanadaRussia Subway Super Series. He explains the major junior leagues are putting together teams to play an elite Russian junior squad this month. “We’ll (WHL team) play two games, one in Vancouver and one in Victoria against Russia,” explains Ouellette. He is on the roster to play in the game in Vancouver on November 14. “It is really exciting and kind of surprising,” Ouel-

lette told The Mail. “I felt honoured to be picked. From going undrafted in the bantam draft to this. It is a big step.” So far, Ouellette has six goals and eight assists in 15 games this season. “It’s going really good, I am putting the puck in the net, points are coming my way and I was getting lots of opportunities,” he said, until he was injured in a game versus Lethbridge. “It was an awkward hit, the guy went low for a hip check and just caught my back leg between the board,” said Ouellette. He sprained his medial collateral ligament and was listed as indefinite. He is expecting to be on the ice skating this week and hopes he’ll be back in shape for the Subway Super Series. As far as the season goes, he hopes to pick up where he left off and continue to build some buzz on his strong start and his selection.

The Drumheller Valley Secondary School Dynos senior girls’ volleyball team was in action once again this past weekend in Strathmore. The team came home after narrowly missing a playoff berth at the tournament. “We missed the playoffs by one match again. A playoff berth was decided on the last match of the round robin. We played Senator Gershaw from Bow Island. Winner of the match stayed and played in the playoffs, loser of the match went home early,” said Dawn Sullivan, head coach of the Dynos. “It was a good match but unfortunately, we came up on the losing side.” Sullivan was pleased with the performance of the team, describing it as being better than their games in Olds the previous weekend. The Dynos narrowly missed the playoffs by a few points in Olds. In the tournaments, the Dynos have been up against some of the tougher teams around. “We have been playing many 3A and even 4A teams which provide a higher level of play and have been very close to pulling off some upsets,” said Sullivan. The Strathmore tournament was the final chance the team had to play competitively before regionals. This weekend, the Dynos will be going up against teams in the region to determine who will go on to zones.

“The team is pumped for regionals and know they have to place in the top six to advance to zones. If they don’t, their season is over,” said Sullivan. “The Dynos are more than capable of doing this, they just have to be ready when they step on the court and play for the full 25 points.”

The Bandits scored their ďŹ rst goal while the Dragons were shorthanded following a slashing penalty called against Tanner Kissick. The second Bandits goal came two minutes into the third—a long shot from the blue line. “Stone would love to have it [the second goal] back, because he played a great game,â€? said Curran. The Dragons had opportunities of their own, including a breakaway attempt by Mitchell Gartner. “Against a team like Brooks you have to make the best of every op-

The Dragons attempted to rein-in the Bandits, but lost by a close 2-0. “We’re trying to get the type of game we need to play. We’re playing against, right now, the best team in Canada. We tried several dierent things to see how they would work,â€? said Brian Curran, head coach and general manager of the Dragons. “We had success at times. It’s been a busy two weekends for the teams of Drumheller Minor Hockey, with the teams looking to keep the momentum of their strong opening weekends going. Many of the teams are currently in some of the top spots in their respective tiers following two weekends of intense competition. The McDonalds Novice Tier 3 Raptors have racked up several wins over the past two weekends. On Saturday, November 3, the team took a 4-2 win over Olds, then turned around and won 6-4 over Airdrie in an exhibition game the same day. The following day, the team tied 7-7 against Redcli. “The kids had a great positioning weekend and worked very hard to get those wins,â€? said head coach Kit Clark. “They’re doing excellent.â€? The Canalta Novice Tier 6 team is coming o the weekend with a 4-4 tie against CrossďŹ eld. The team is currently tied for ďŹ rst place in their tier. The previous weekend saw the team up against some tougher opponents during a couple of games against higher-tier teams. “We won our ďŹ rst two games [of the season] pretty easy, then we had to do a couple tiering games and we got smoked. Basically, we had to play a couple

teams in the tier above us, in Tier 5,â€? said head coach Phil McClusky. “Yesterday we had a game against CrossďŹ eld, which is in our own tier, and we tied 4-4. The kids did quite good. It’s been a fun start to the year.â€? The Yavis Atom Tier 3 Raptors are coming o a loss on the road in CrossďŹ eld this past Sunday. The weekend before saw the team win at home against Redcli 4-2 and a 2-9 loss against Cochrane. The team is currently four points shy of ďŹ rst place in a tight tier. “We’ve played a couple teams that are much stronger than us and a couple that are on par with us. The kids are buying into our system, they’re practicing hard, and improving every game,â€? said head coach Tony Pliva.

The Encana Atom Tier 6 team had a tough weekend on the road, losing against Strathmore on Saturday and a narrow 6-5 against Chestermere the following day. The team is holding onto third place in their tier thanks to a strong opening weekend. The NGC Pee Wee Tier 2 Raptors are currently tied for ďŹ rst place in their tier thanks to two big wins. On October 27 and 28, the team took Indus to task 7-1 and then defeated Brooks 8-5. The following weekend, the team was on the road in Kneehill County, but couldn’t keep the momentum going, losing 3-7. The Hi-Way 9 Pee-Wee Tier 6 team has been dominating their tier so far this season. October 27 and 28 saw the
