Drumheller RCMP stress pedestrian awareness submitted | inSide Drumheller

Throughout the month of November, Alberta RCMP, along with their enforcement partners, will step up eorts to educate the public on pedestrian safety. Walking is part of a healthy lifestyle, and is many Albertans' primary form of transportation, particularly children and youth. Both drivers and pedestrians are responsible for safety. Pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks, but pedestrians also have the responsibility to cross safely. From 2004 to 2008, on average each year in Alberta, more than 45 pedestrians were killed and about 1270 were injured. Pedestrians: ¡ Don’t assume drivers see you and will stop. Always be cautious and watch for vehicles that are not stopping. ¡ Be visible. More pedestrian collisions occur during months of low light conditions. Wear reective clothing and carry a ashlight! ¡ Pay attention! Remove headphones; put away cell phones or other electronic devices when crossing the street. ¡ Walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk o the road, facing traďŹƒc, staying as far away from the vehicles as possible. ¡ Pedestrian injuries are the third leading cause of injury-related death for children under 14 years of age. ¡ Alcohol is often a factor in serious pedestrian collisions. On average over onethird of pedestrians in fatal crashes and 15 per cent in injury crashes had consumed alcohol prior to the collision. ¡ Use the ‘point, pause, and proceed’ pedestrian safety method to cross the street: Look all four ways - left, right, ahead and behind. ¡ Always use crosswalks and pedestrian-activated signals when they are available and cross only at intersections if they are not. ¡ Never jaywalk. Drivers

are not anticipating pedestrians crossing in the middle of the street so they may not have enough time to avoid hitting you. ¡ Walk on the sidewalk. If there are no sidewalks, walk o the road, facing traďŹƒc. ¡ Watch for vehicles backing up in driveways or parking lots. ¡ When crossing driveways and alleys, always look left and right just as you would when crossing a street. ¡ When crossing a street, walk, don’t run. This will allow drivers more time to see you and come to a safe stop. Motorists: ¡ Scan farther down the road and obey posted speed limits. Always be prepared to slow down or stop. Avoid loud music and other distractions while driving. ¡ Use caution when approaching intersections or mid-block crosswalks. ¡ Allow pedestrians to cross the road before proceeding. The ďŹ ne for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk or passing a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk is $575.00 and four demerit points. ¡ Ensure your windows are clear and your view is not obstructed. ¡ Be cautious in parking lots or when backing out of a parking stall or driveway. ¡ Slow down around parked or stopped vehicles as they may hide a pedestrian who is crossing the road, particularly children who may dash out into the street. ¡ Stay alert and slow down on residential streets and through school zones; the speed limit for school and playground zones in urban and rural areas is 30 km/h unless otherwise posted. ¡ Watch for the school safety patrol wearing orange vests, and stop as directed. School safety patrollers play a vital role in directing children safely across the street. ¡ With these simple tips, we can make Alberta a safer place for motorists and pedestrians alike!

St. Anthony’s Mo Bros raising awareness of prostate cancer Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Loathe them or lick them, the moustache is a fashion icon. Be it the red marshmallow that has become Lanny McDonald’s trademark, the soup strainer that blew in the breeze as Magnum PI cruised the roads of Oahu, or the pencil-line lip tickler that Clark Gable wooed starlets with, it is here to stay. A new generation struggling to patch together any facial hair at all also cling to this pattern of facial hair to assert their individuality, even if it is in an ironic way. There has been no better reason to embrace the moustache, because in November it is the symbol of a good cause. The male sta at St. Anthony’s School are celebrating Movember. The month is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer. The premise is simple: the participants were clean-shaven as of November 1, and over the following month they let it all grow out. Teacher Grant Gay, who is spearheading the St. Anthony’s Movember team, said it is as much about raising awareness as it is about rais-

ing funds. “The idea is when someone says ‘Hey, what is that thing growing on your lip?’ you can tell them it is for prostate cancer research because guys have a tendency not to go to doctors,â€? he said. The Movember movement started in Australia and has spread wildďŹ re around the world. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men, and one in six men will be diagnosed in his lifetime. Of the 24,600 men in Canada who will be diagnosed this year, over 4,300 men will die of the disease. The good news is that 90 per cent of prostate cancer cases are curable if detected and treated in the early stages. The bad news is that 50 per cent of men do not book an annual doctor’s appointment. This is Gay’s ďŹ rst time participating in the campaign, has been able to enlist all the male sta as Mo Bros, as well as a few Mo Sistas to support them along the way. A few students are also working at growing out their peach fuzz in participation. One standout may be Grade 5 teacher Bill Judge. It has been 27 years since anyone has seen his upper lip.

“I thought it would be fun, everyone’s doing it and it is a good cause,â€? said Judge. Last year the event raised $7.8 Million for Prostate Cancer Canada to fund programs related to awareness, education and support for those aected by prostate cancer, as well as research into prevention, detection

and treatment of prostate cancer. To support the Mo Bros of St. Anthony’s go to http:// ca.movember.com/donate/ and search out the St. Anthony’s team, or give a pledge to your favourite Mo Bro and watch the facial hair grow. After all, without the moustache, Smokey or the

Glen Adie competes in Senior National Final Rodeo Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A former Drumheller area cowboy isn’t riding off into the sunset, he is still competing and winning. Delmar Adie dropped into inSide Drumheller last week to tell the paper his son Glen Adie is still competing in Rodeo, and is still doing well.

Glen, 51, was at the National Seniors Pro Rodeo Association’s National Finals Rodeo in Winnemucca, Nevada over the weekend. He is a competitor in the Team Roping category and going into the event, he was ranked second as a header. Glen was born and raised on a farm three miles from

Drumheller, and he has rodeoed most of his adult life. Now residing in the Kathyrn area, he competes in the Canadian Senior Rodeo Association, and this year was ranked

in the National Senior Pro Rodeo Association. It appears Glen turned in a score of 11.5 in round two of the contest for a fourth place finish on that day. While over-

all he was not in the winner’s circle, he held on to a number 3 world ranking in the 50-plus-header category.

Kaleidoscope cancels late November production, quiet year ahead Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

The Kaleidoscope Theatre production of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, slated for late November, has been cancelled. Due to irreconcilable commitment issues from cast members are said to be the cause, and now the theatre will not have any productions until the same time next year. Replacements could not be found. The cancellation of the production, originally set for November 24-27 and December 1-4, will now make time for work on upgrades to the Kaleidoscope Theatre. New seats, a paint job, and drapery additions are planned for the theatre – after construction at DCHS is finished by January. “We felt we needed to replace the seats, they were

taken from the Napier theatre and are falling apart,” says Colin Regamey of the theatre. A grand re-opening of the theatre is planned for the end of April. The production of The Sound of Music, which was planned next summer, will be pushed back to November 2011. It was pushed back due to the license purchase of The Sound of Music, and fears of not being prepared due to a potential delay in construction on the theatre/school. “Unfortunately it’ll be a quiet year for the public, but not so much for the society,” says Regamey. Drumheller garden featured on Gardens West cover Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Gardens West magazine has honoured a stunning garden from the Drumhell-

er area on its cover of the November/December edition, with a big spread proving that lavish and beautiful

The Tchir garden in Drumheller has been featured in a spread and cover story in Gardens West Prairie Edition’s November/December issue, highlighting the garden of Don and Sherry Tchir.

gardens can survive the arid badlands. Don and Sherry Tchir’s 14 year work-in-progress was photographed last summer, but is featured now in a full spread of the Prairie Edition of the gardening magazine. The edition, which hit newsstands on Monday, features the garden made by the owners of Kneehill Creek Tree. “It’s nice being recognized,” says Sherry. “Some people have sports, we like fooling around in the yard. It’s our thing.” Almost every tree on the property was planted by the family– they estimate they put over 2,000 into the ground. Gardening in Drumheller definitely presents a challenge, “with our nice benonite soil,” says Sherry, but with work and vision a beautiful spot can be made. “Don is very talented,” Sherry says, “it’s something you’re born with.” Gardens West editor Melissa Cornwell writes, “The Tchir's sprawling ranch-style home nestles within woodland composed of many hand-planted trees and natural tree growth that has been thriving on the banks of the

river for a century or more. The woods behind the perennial garden are thin enough to give an alluring hint of the river that flows below the property. A trail leads down a gentle slope, past a wooden gazebo and over a bridge to steps that take one down to a level space near the bottom. Here the Tchirs created a firepit area with picnic tables, chairs and other seating

- the perfect place to watch the lazy river flow by. “Indeed, as one drives up the Tchir's tree-lined lane, were it not for the rugged coulee walls rising behind and across the river, one might have a hard time remembering that this is part of the 'Alberta Badlands'." The Tchir garden is located on the Highway 575 turnoff to Orkney.

McLeans magazine recently ran an issue with the cover title, “The Most Corrupt Province in Canada, and alongside it, Bonhomme Carnival, the mascot for Quebec City’s Winter Carnival carrying a briefcase overstuffed with dollar bills. Personally, I thought the mascot was a giveaway. 9 out of 10 Canadians will tell you Quebec is the most corrupt province, they don’t need any hints or prompting. Apparently the federal government took offense, and I find their reaction rather offensive. All parties came together in the House (how rare) to pass a resolution so weird, well here’s the last half . . . prejudice, displayed, and the stereotypes employed by McLeans magazine to denigrate the Quebec nation ... The “Quebec nation”? What Quebec nation? If Quebec is a nation, why are its representatives sitting in our House of Commons? Wait a minute, I get it. The feds aren’t peeved that McLeans called Quebec corrupt, they’re more concerned about it being referred to as merely a province, with its nation hood going unrecognized. The sooner Quebec is officially recognized as a nation, the sooner we will be free of it. This resolution would seem to recognize that nation hood. People are always asking me, “How do you decide what you are going to write?” or “Where do you come up with ideas for your column?” I give an answer that is sometimes not really true. I tell them that I read a lot, and that I come up with things from what I’ve read. The truth is, I read the newspapers and the odd magazine, and form opinions on what I’ve read. Sometimes my opinion reflects that of the majority, and sometimes not. The thing is, is that it’s my opinion, and whether the majority shares it or thinks it out of whack, makes no difference to me, because opinions are like cell phones, everybody has one. I don’t have one, so you might wonder how does that work, he has an opinion, but he doesn’t have a cell phone. Well, you see in my opinion, most cell phones fall into the category of “want”, not “need”, and I don’t want a cell phone, nor do I have a particular need for one. Opinions on the other hand, are exactly opposite, everyone should have one, regardless of want. In a rather clumsy seque, the irony of the cell phone and all its progeny is this: For all the technology and all the communication devices out there, and the ease with which they make it to communicate, we are becoming less skilled at communicating with one another face to face. There seems to be an inverse relationship. As our ability to communicate electronically increases, our ability to communicate individually, face to face, decreases. Our alphabet is being reduced to suit our electronic devices. C. U. L8R. In less then a generation we will be no better than Neauderthals, scratching “characters” on a cave wall to relate the days events/ Twitter, Twitter. 44m

Bridge delays as ACTO reroutes river crossing Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

This week signalled a major project being undertaken that will change the skyline of the area near the World’s largest Dinosaur. It will also unfortunately disrupt traffic. Drumheller Mail readers learned in its September 8 edition that ATCO Electric has undertaken an approximately $2.5 million project to install the feeder line to downtown Drumheller underground. This includes

burying the feeder line from 17th Street in Midland, where the line descends into the valley from the Michichi substation, all the way to the Gordon Taylor Bridge. Part of this is removing the overhead line crossing the Red Deer River. This week crews have begun to install the routing to place the river crossing in conduit attached to the Gordon Taylor Bridge. “There’s a safety aspect,” said ATCO district manager Wilf

Golbeck. “We had a major outage last year on the north side of the river when a piece of large equipment hit one of the power poles as it crossed some industrial yards back there, so taking it out and putting it underground will remove that hazard.” Because of this, there is a single lane closure on the Gordon Taylor Bridge when the crews are working on the line. Work is expected to last 10 days.

Drillin’ the Hoodoos

Drumheller drivers are experiencing some delays on the Gordon Taylor Bridge as ATCO Electric has closed a single lane to install a new power line river

crossing. The construction is expected to last about 10 days.

Chris Vidito works on what will become a network of metal walkways throughout the Hoodoo site along Highway 10. Work on the paths have caused the site to be closed for the rest of the year, in order to decrease damage caused by tourists walking over the delicate attraction. inSide photo by Kyle Smylie
