Warm wishes at Coats for Kids The third annual Coats for Kids was in full swing at Western Chev on Thursday, October 13. This project is a one-day blitz for residents to dig out unwanted coats, toques mitts and cold weather gear and donate them to a good cause. The donations are cleaned by ALSCO and The Salvation Army distributes them free of charge to help those in need to have a warm winter. Last year the project collected over 600 donations, and they are on track to another success. (l-r) Western Chev sales manager Bryan Borisow, sales staff Mike Bell and Lt. Rachel Sheils of The Salvation Army survey the donations. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

RCMP collaboration launches Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards to area youth Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller Drumheller has become a launching pad for a project that could make a significant impact on young people in the valley now, and in the future. The RCMP has collaborated with the Duke of Edinburgh Society to facilitate youth participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. This self-development program has had an effect on almost seven million young people in 130 countries. Drumheller is the first community in Alberta, and one of five in Western Canada to introduce the partnership. It is a three-year pilot program. On Tuesday afternoon, Constable Tom Dobrich, was joined by representatives of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards to introduce the program to Drumheller Valley Secondary School high school students. “It is an opportunity to improve yourself and the community you live in,” said Dobrich to the students gathered in Kaleidoscope Theatre. Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, established the award in 1956 as a way four young people to develop a sense of responsibility to themselves and their community. The program was launched in Canada in 1966. It is a prestigious award that is recognized internationally. It is the second highest honour a youth can earn in Alberta, and a member of the Royal family or the Governor General presents a Gold Award in a national ceremony. One of the unique aspects of the program is that it is selfdirected and individual. Young people from the age of 14-25 can participate. To complete the program they must fulfil requirements in four categories; com-

munity service, personal skill development, physical recreation and an adventurous journey. To earn a Gold Award, there is also a residential project where the young person will take on a challenge where they will live and work outside their regular support system for five days. Earning a Bronze Award takes in the area of six months and requires 15 hours of community Service, 30 hours of physical recreation and a two-day adventurous journey. A Silver Award requires a year to complete and has a community service component of 24 hours over 12 months or 30 hours over six months, 40 hours of physical recreation over 20 weeks and a three day adventurous journey. The Gold standard takes about 18 months to complete and requires 90 hours of commu-

MLA for Drumheller-Stettler Jack Hayden will remain a cabinet minister in Alison Redford’s government. Redford was sworn in as Alberta’s Premier on October 7. On Wednesday morning, she announced her new Cabinet, which includes Jack Hayden as Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation. He also sits on the Government Committee for Community Development. “With this new team in place, we’re ready to work for Albertans on a new agenda. One of our first jobs will be getting ready for the fall session and setting our agenda to move forward,” Redford said.

nity service or 60 hours over 12 months, 50 hours in physical recreation of 25 weeks, a four-day adventurous journey and a residential project. Benefits of the program include growth and self-discovery, motivation and goal setting. Achieving the Award is a great addition to a resume and can assist youth in earning scholarships. Constable Dobrich told the students that the program is often offered as part of the curriculum of private schools and colleges. The program can be done individually, or through groups such as the Sea Cadets, Guide and Scout groups or school. The partnership with the RCMP has allowed the community to build a local mentorship group and in preparation of launching the program have

a trained team of volunteers to help facilitate the program. Continuing this week, Dobrich and representatives of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards are presenting the program to schools throughout the area. The students will be provided with registration forms and materials explaining the Awards and the community challenge. For more information on the program contact the RCMP at 403-823-7590 or program manager Chelsey Dawes 403-6518173. More information can be found at www.dukeofed.org. Hayden was first elected in the Drumheller-Stettler riding in 2007 in a by-election to replace MLA Shirley McClellan and again in 2008 in a general election. He served as Minister of Infrastructure, and most recently Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, prior to the PC leadership race. In the race, Hayden supported Doug Horner for leadership. Horner was appointed Deputy Premier and President of the Treasury Board and Enterprise. Hayden said during the race he is comfortable with any of the three candidates on the second ballot. “My working relationship with Alison is excellent, she is a very intelligent lady,” said Hayden during the race.

Downtown digging continues Residents visiting downtown on October 12 would have had to make a detour to get around Centre Street. Construction continues on the water pipes in the downtown area. Crews are replacing the cast iron water mains to improve the quality and stability of the water. The project is scheduled to be completed in mid November.

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller The Drumheller Police Committee has a goal of making policing in Drumheller reflective of the community’s needs, and is going to the public to learn more. The committee has been active and wants to learn from those whom the police serve, what they believe should be priorities. “It is keeping with our mandate of looking for input,” said committee chair Fred Makowecki. Because the Drumheller RCMP Detachment also provides service to rural areas, they are holding their next regular meeting in Delia, as well as an open house on November 10. On November 24, they will be holding an open house at 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre in the AV Room to look at priorities and solicit input. Makowecki said the committee was successful in getting out to meet with the community at the annual partnership fair last June. They received about 50 completed surveys on what residents felt were priorities in the community. To continue to build this mine of information, they have decided to post a short survey on the Town of Drumheller website for residents of the town and area to simply fill out to help determine the next year of policing priorities. To find the survey, simply go to www.dinosaurvalley.com. The policing survey is under the 'Town Services' tab.

Downtown business community remains vibrant Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Small business in downtown Drumheller remains vibrant despite changing economic tides. While many cores ebb and flow with economic challenges, downtown Drumheller appears to be holding its own. According to Connie Tremblay of downtown Drumheller, the merchant’s association is about 33 strong and have come off a successful summer of events. These include Motorcycle Madness, and most recently Alberta Arts Day

celebrations, to name a few. Right now, they are gearing up for the Downtown Trick or Treat. “The events are a draw to get people to come down, which is great for business,” said Tremblay. She said this is successful because it is a collaboration. Each business can contribute to the event, and benefit, rather than going alone. Each merchant can also draw on the expertise and experience of its neighbour to make it a success. One of the rules of business is competition. Tremblay refers to

MLA Doug Griffith’s presentation called “13 Ways to Kill Your Community.” “He says how important it is to have that competition. People want that competition. Some say, ‘Why should I move downtown, because there are already two coffee shops?’ Why not three coffee shops?” she said. The efforts to keep the downtown community strong continue. Right now, they are in the midst of a heritage inventory, with hopes of working towards becoming part of the Mainstreet Program.

The Centennial of Coal Mining committee is working on erecting a memorial to fallen miners, and the idea of creating a town centre is still on the agenda. The Town of Drumheller is also taking a very serious look at moving back to the core. “Once the town office is downtown, I think it is definitely going to be a benefit. It is going to establish a core. When people stop off at town hall, they will be right there, and can shop,” said Tremblay. “There really is a lot going on.”

October 16-22, 2011 Ready for business at local symposium Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Next week is Small Business Week in Canada and in recognition, small businesses in the Drumheller Valley will be participating in a symposium being held in Greentree Mall from October 18 to 20. “The Chamber hasn’t oered a small business week event for a couple years,â€? said Roxanne Clark, OďŹƒce and Membership Coordinator of the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce. “We felt we wanted to engage our membership and oer them information that is relevant to the small business owner.â€? The symposium is a joint eort between ATB Financial and the Chamber.

The three day event will focus on a dierent aspect of small business each day. “It was information that we thought would be pertinent to the challenges small business owners face,â€? said Clark. Technology will be the focus on the ďŹ rst day, with guest speaker John Sho from Reality Bytes giving a presentation on how business owners can use social media. The Drumheller RCMP will be giving a talk dealing with counterfeiting and credit card fraud. On the second day, ďŹ nance will be the hot topic and Todd Hirsch, Sr. Economist at ATB, will give a short presentation entitle “Everywhere a Sign! Alberta in a dangerous global economy.â€? The last day of the symposium

will deal with one of life’s absolutes: taxes. Hansine Kostelecky, from Numberz Accounting, will present “Starting a Small Business, Accounting and Tax Things to Consider. Each session will be followed by a Q&A period and an opportunity for businesses to display their ideas and network. “There will be a wealth of information, promised Clark. Chamber members can attend for free, but the event is not limited to members. The symposium is open to the public as well, with registration fees of $10 per day or $25 for all three. LARSEN Christian (Chris) December 18, 1928 - October 10, 2011

Chris passed away peacefully after a brief stay at the Drumheller Regional Hospital on Thanksgiving Monday. Chris is survived by his wife of 57 years Tina, his children John (Colleen), Evelyn, Anna, Dana, Elsie (Brent), 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many friends. Chris was a longtime resident of the valley, in Lehigh and for the past 25 years, in Drumheller, where he was known as the manager of Juniper Manor Apts. Chris had a quick wit and passion for jokes. A common saying was "Did I tell you the one about..." Tina and the family would like to thank the staff at DRH, and all for the kind words and condolences that have been received over the past few days. At Chris's request, a private family gathering will be 41c held after his cremation.

Council Notes from the regular meeting of Drumheller Town Council

Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 Town Council awarded a contract to Associated Engineering for the supply of professional engineering services at the Wastewater Treatment Facilities in the amount of $66,781.00. The contract is for system upgrades and optimization. The budgeted amount is $40,000, leaving a shortfall of $26,781 which will come from reserves. •••••• Mayor Yemen asked Council members to indicate preferences they may have to sit on any of the town’s committees. The request is made annually should any councillor wish to change committees as the town’s representatives. •••••• Town Council will put 15 properties up for the 2011 Tax Recovery Public Auction. If taxes on the properties have not been paid within the prescribed time, they may be subject to be put up for auction. Caveats are registered on the properties and reserves are set for each property. Letters to property owners will be sent prior to the end of 2011 and the auction date would be held January 25, 2012. According to Acting Director of Corporate Services Bill Wulff, most taxes and associated interest on the listed properties are paid prior to the auction. •••••• The Drumheller Housing Authority has requested that the property being used by Sandstone Manor be made exempt from taxation. The Municipal Government Act does allow the town to provide exemption on the property in question. The amount is question is $8331.30 plus a late payment penalty of $558.24 for a total of $8889.54. According to DHA board chair Jay Garbutt, the object of the administration is to provide rental amounts to the occupants at as low a rate as possible. There is a very low or zero vacancy rate in the Affordable Housing in Sandstone Manor at present. The motion was defeated. •••••• Bill Davidson, president of the Newcastle Recreation Association (N.R.A.), has written a letter to Town Council, requesting that that body be allowed to take on ownership of the Newcastle Hall for lease or sale in the amount of $1.00. Expenses associated with the hall would become the responsibility of the N.R.A., but prior to transfer, the N.R.A. is requesting the town provide assistance with drainage issue remediation on the property. The Newcastle Hall is the only community hall left that is owned by the town. No community halls in the valley pay any property taxes. The motion passed. ••••••

for the move. “My biggest thing is I am embarrassed when I walk into Town Hall. We have a Town Hall that is not handicapped accessible, that is just wrong,” said Mayor Terry Yemen. He adds, the Civic Centre is a much more modern facility. “The Civic Centre is a little bit of an older building, but it was not built in 1953.

With the energy efficiency, we are going to save a lot just in operating the building,” said Yemen. While they now have preliminary drawings, and the approval to use MSI funds for the move, they have not completed the final costing for the project. Council is planning to share the plans with resident later on this month or in early November.

Here’s how it works:

CLUES ACROSS

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

I like gnocchi as a side dish, not only because it is delicious but also because it’s a nice change from the usual. I think of it as a cross between potatoes and pasta. You can serve it with a variety of sauces, pesto or just toss in oil and a sprinkling of parmesan. It takes just minutes to cook and also to keep on hand because it has a good shelf life. You will find it packaged near the pastas, usually. But is also quite simple to make from scratch with just a few ingredients. Here is a tasty way to serve it:

Cook the gnocchi in boiling water until it floats to the top – drain. Cook garlic and onion in oil until soft, then add the remaining vegetables and basil. Cook for 5 minutes. Stir in the butter to melt, add vinegar and simmer for 20 minutes. Toss the cooked gnocchi in the sauce to serve.

Gnocchi with Balsamic Sauce 3 cloves garlic ½ cup diced onion 6 mushrooms, chopped 4 small sweet peppers, julienned ½ cup cherry tomatoes, halved 4 leaves fresh basil, chopped ½ cup balsamic vinegar 1 cup butter 2 cups gnocchi

The Drumheller Dragons are back on the road this weekend heading to Bonnyville and Fort McMurray.

They will be back on home ice on October 18 to play the Bandits. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

While the Dragons have fallen three in a row, coach Dan Price says they are playing strong hockey and are looking to improve on their next road trip. The Dragons are on their way north this weekend to play the Bonnyville Pontiacs and the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. This follows on a week where they bowed to the Sherwood Park Crusaders and twice to the Camrose Kodiaks. Last Thursday, in Camrose, Price says the team started slow and did not manage the puck well in the neutral zone. They improved through the second half of the game, and goals by Keith Csizmadia in the second period and Sam Lawson in the third, had the teams tied at two with sev-

en minutes to go. Camrose exploited a Dragons error, which lead to a two-on-one for the game winner. “It was really a good ďŹ nish for us,â€? said Price. He said the team continued to play strong heading home last Saturday. Mitch Owsley and Trevor Tracy kept the game tied at two after one period. Brody Robinson scored in the third keeping the game tied after two. The Crusaders went up 5-3 in the third, but in the dying seconds, Ryan Bloom scored on the powerplay, ending the gamed 5-4 for the Crusaders. “I thought we had the majority of the scoring chances by far, and we deserved to win that game," said Price. “It could have been our best game of the year.â€? The follow up on Sunday night was lack lustre. Cam-

rose dominated from start to ďŹ nish, winning 4-0. “We were at, I didn’t feel like we were the better team in that particular game,â€? said Price. “We were a bit of a road weary team and a bit beat up. To be where we want to be this year we need to push through and get those points and win those games on the road. There were some highs and lows, but hopefully some good lessons learned by the guys.â€? The Dragons are in Bonnyville this Friday and then in Fort McMurray on Saturday. “It is exciting, we get to go right back on the road‌ it is a great challenge and test for us Friday and Saturday,â€? said Price. The Dragons are back home on Tuesday, October 18 to play the Brooks Bandits.

There are usually great folks at the garden centers who can help you choose something that will grow in the area you live. 2: When adding a rose to your garden, make sure to give it lots of room to grow and reach its mature size. 3: Roses have to receive at least six hours of direct sunlight a day, so make sure they are planted in the sunniest place possible. 4: Dig a hole twice the width of the pot and as deep as the nursery pot or root mass of the new plant. 5: Roses thrive in enriched soil so improve the soil at the same time you plant the rose. Several shovelfuls of composted manure worked into the area around the plant will do wonders. 6: Feed your roses monthly during the growing season. So as soon as you see new growth April/ May until the 1st of July. Then stop feeding to let the plant harden off for the winter season. 7: Water roses weekly if nature doesn’t do it for you, and always water after fertilizing. You can preserve some moisture by spreading a 2-inch layer of mulch on the ground around the plants. 8: To help keep pests and diseases away, keep leaf litter cleaned up and spray them down periodically with water. Again ensure they get plenty of

sunlight and have plenty of room for the wind to keep the leaves dry. This will help eliminate a lot of problems. 9: Snipping off spent flowers keeps roses growing strong, and encourages more blooms. Stop snipping by late summer to allow the plant to get ready for fall and also allow some rose hips to grow for winter interest. At this time you can also trim out any damaged or old canes that have no life in them. 10: If you have poor winter protection, like other shrubs and trees growing in your garden, you may want to mulch the roses in by mounting up about 12 inch of mulch around the bottom of the plants. But don’t do this until it get fairly cold during the day because you don’t want to keep the plant too warm or it won’t know winter is coming. Also make sure to take the mulch away as soon as it starts to show any signs of life in the spring. If it sprouts too soon it may get some frost damage. 11: Lastly, give roses at least three years to mature and make sure they still have good air flow around them at their mature size. 12: Make sure you take time to smell the roses after all the work you have done to get them to grow for you. than you were yesterday.’ That is our motto, to grow everyday as a team and an individual.” Coach Makse says the team has been playing against adult soccer players to get some game experience. “Playing against older, more skilled players is helping us,” he said, adding that the faster level of play is helping the Sabres adapt. The tournament is in Cochrane and has a round robin format. The Sabres are in a pool with Canmore, George McDougald of Airdrie and Foothills Composite High School from Okotoks. The team’s first game is

against Foothills Composite at 10:30 a.m. “I think what is key for us is if we get that first goal in the first game it can give us confidence and really build on that momentum,” said Makse. They then play Canmore at 1:45 p.m. and George McDougald at 5 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the pools cross over and how they finish will determine when they are back on the field. “It comes down to which team wants it the most at zones, and we are relying on those Grade 12's to lead us with their experience,” said Makse.
