The World’s Largest Dinosaur was in the spirit of things at its 10th birthday bash on Wednesday, where a large crowd gathered to celebrate a decade of the iconic T-rex’s life. Since it was finished on October 13, 2000, the dinosaur has brought in more than $450,000 through the Legacy Fund, which gives tourism dollars back to community groups.

Legal action against LED sign withdrawn Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

An agreement was reached by the parties involved with the LED sign located at the World’s Largest Dinosaur. The sign will now be shut off overnight. The Mail reported in July that John Parsons filed an action against the Town of Drumheller and DCT New Age Promotions, using the town’s own bylaws, claiming both permitted a condition that constitutes a nuisance to exist, contrary to bylaw 24.98. Parson lives near the sign and feels the light emitted and the blinking nature constitutes a nuisance to area residents. He resorted to filing the action after approaching town council. In provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, October 8, the action was withdrawn. According to Gary Wood, representation for Parsons, the Town and the owners of the sign restricted the hours of use. “We’ve come to an agreement whereby they agreed to turn the sign off between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.,” said Wood. “I am pleased that we were able to reach an agreement.” He adds the owner of the sign volunteered to the amendment of his operations. DCT New Age Promotions owns the sign, and proprietor Darcy Thompson is relieved it has been settled. “I have had only one formal complaint compared to many compliments but even one concerned citizen concerns me, and I am happy we were able to come to a resolution,” said Thompson. “I never imagined my sign would be a det-

A legal action underaken by resident John Parsons against the Town of Drumheller and DCT New Age promotions has been dropped. riment to him or anyone and anticipated it being a positive thing for our community.” While Parsons agreed to the deal, and won a victory by having the hours of the sign limited, Parsons is still unhappy with the electronic billboard being in place. “We are not happy because it shines in

our house. It is an intrusion. These lights are flashing and they’re coloured. The messages are on top of it, and the messages are advertising. It is like watching commercials on TV all day and night, you get tired of it after a while,” he said. “It is really intrusive.” While they have reached an agreement, he said it doesn’t preclude him from further pursuing the issue in the future. He believes the Town and its existing bylaws were not in a position to make a considered decision about the sign placement. “I think they were caught off guard, they had no idea what they were getting into with these signs. In fact, in communities that have these signs, there are all kinds of complaints…everybody is caught off guard by them,” he said. Right now, he is looking at the incoming Town Council to see if there is a remedy. For now the ball has bounced from being a legal issue to a political issue. “Now we just wait for the elections, and see if the new council reconsiders it,” said Parsons. Thompson said the sign was never intended to menace, but simply a venue to display what Drumheller offers. “The location was chosen as it is the hub of Drumheller where people congregate and was never meant to be read from the bridge or any roadway. Local residents and tourists frequent the area year round and seemed the most logical location,” said Thompson. “I sincerely apologise if it has caused anyone hardship and I am open to discuss any concerns.”

On Wednesday, October 13, 50 people gathered at the feet of Drumheller’s most iconic attraction to celebrate the 10th birthday of the World’s Largest Dinosaur. Over the last decade, the dinosaur has done more for Drumheller than please the millions of tourists who have climbed the long stairway to the mouth of the quadruple life-sized tyrannosaurus rex. “What we have given back to the community, financially, is probably the biggest significance,” said Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce manager Heather Bitz. The million dollar project was never thought to be as rewarding as it became, with the revenue from the dinosaur balancing the costs within five years. Bob Davis was manager of

the chamber in 1999 when the project had already been decided. “It felt really good, it felt like something special was happening,” said Davis, who inherited the huge project. “Ten years ago today, when I watched the final piece put into place, I was skeptical,” said Mayor Bryce Nimmo. “But hope ruled over skepticism, and now we are looking at an icon seen across the country. “It’s an example of the ingenuity, thoughtfulness, and forward thinking the people of Drumheller have. It’s a tribute to the foresight of the people who put it together.” With the one millionth tourist visiting in September of last year, the World’s Largest Dinosaur has given back over $450,000 with the Legacy Fund. Over the past decade, 15

per cent of admissions and 10 per cent from sales at the giftshop have been set aside to be injected back into the Drumheller community. As for ideas for the lov-

Volunteers needed for miners memorial research project submitted | inSide Drumheller

In preparation of the centennial of mining in the valley, the committee is looking for volunteers to help make the miner’s memorial a reality. In 1911, a shovel went into the ground, and a town was born. The shovel scooped coal out of the Newcastle Mine, the ďŹ rst commercial mine in what is now the Town of Drumheller. That ďŹ rst load of coal, pushed up the slope in a wheelbarrow, was the start of an industry that spanned 68 years. During that period, 139 mines were registered. By the time the dust had settled, sixty million tons of coal had been hauled out of the Drumheller Valley. When that wheelbarrow rolled up the slope in 1911, there were 50 people living in the valley. These pioneers knew that the mines would attract the railway and the people needed to make a real town. To prepare for the anticipated inux, real estate deals were made. A school district was established, and Drumheller was named. Sure enough, thousands of people poured in, houses sprang up, businesses appeared, and we were on our

OPEN LETTER TO DRUMHELLER VOTERS Just think of it, the citizens of Drumheller could elect a woman for the first time as Mayor, if Tara Semchuk becomes Mayor on Monday, October 18, 2010. I have been living in Drumheller for the last 30 years and I have been active in community service clubs, organizing special events, and fund-raising activities. I also served as a member of Town Council for two consecutive terms between the years 2001 to 2007.

Established in 2003, Strad Compression and Production Services, part of the Production Services Division of Strad Energy Services have developed a reputation as the experts in Natural Gas Compression. Featuring an extensive service fleet, Strad Compression specializes in screw and reciprocating compression overhauls, repairs and maintenance. Customized Natural Gas Compression packages, power generation packages and process equipment are manufactured in Strad Compression’s state-of-the-art facility located in Stettler, Alberta

I have taken the opportunity to meet with Tara Semchuk on several occasions since I learned of her candidacy. I learned that Tara Semchuk has been living in Drumheller for the last 14 years, that she is a mother of two teenage sons and has one son in his twenties who is employed with a local radio station in Drumheller, and that she has been operating her own business in downtown Drumheller successfully for the last 4 ½ years.

We are now seeking a full-time employee for the following position:

NATURAL GAS COMPRESSION TECHNICIAN Required for the Drumheller Area Qualifications: The successful candidate should have 2 years of related experience, and a Journeyman Automotive, Heavy Duty or Millwright ticket. Additionally Walk, White Superior Engine, and/or Cat experience is necessary. Benefits Include: Competitive wages Excellent benefits (health, dental, life insurance, disability etc.) Participation in company RRSP program A positive working environment and a chance to work with experts in the field.

Tara Semchuk has been active with a variety of community groups not only on the front line, but also as a leader. The last several years, she has been active as the chairperson of the Downtown Drumheller Merchants Association, as a member of the Steering Committee for the Drumheller Tourism Master Plan, and as a member of the Olympic Torch Committee. I found Tara Semchuk to be intelligent, engaging, direct, and articulate. In my opinion, she is a very positive individual who sees the glass half full, rather than being half empty. She is a thoughtful listener and she believes in getting all the facts before making a final decision. As a result of my conversations with Tara Semchuk and conversations with others who know her community work well, I have no hesitation in supporting her candidacy for Mayor. I also appreciate her commitment to see the new community centre completed on time and within budget. Tara Semchuk is an intelligent and infectious enthusiast who would be an excellent Mayor for the Town of Drumheller. John L. Sparling, Q.C.

If you are interested in a career with an established Energy Services company, please forward your resume with the subject line Compression Technician to careers@stradenergy.com or fax to (403) 410-2188. For more information on Strad Compression and Strad Energy Services, please visit our website at: www.stradenergy.com We thank all applicants and advise that only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

Therefore, that means that if the expiry date of your aspirin is August 1st, 2010, then it should be at least 90% as strong as the dose indicates on the label on this date. Medications after the expiry date may not be as strong. It could be safely taken for medications where the dose does not need to be 100% of what was labeled for it to be effective. It is important to keep in mind that you should not try to take more of the medication to make up for the lost in strength. Having said that, medications where the doses are critical to one’s health, such as antibiotics, anticoagulants, and seizure medications, should not be used after its expiry date. Furthermore, some medications may change in its composition after the expiry date. This may be dangerous as it would lead to more serious side effects. The use of medications after the expiry date is not supported by pharmaceutical companies if anything goes wrong. Therefore, it is important for you to ask your pharmacist.

one to drop a ring loses. “It was a little awkward, especially doing it with someone you didn’t know,” Olsen laughs. “I felt really nervous.” Her team went on to win an iPod Touch and $100 iTunes gift card. Before playing the game, Ellen asked the guests where they were from. “Because of the long weekend, half the audience was Canadian and everyone just screamed when I said I was from Alberta.” “I have twin two-year-old boys, and I waved at the camera ‘Hey Paxton, hey Cooper!’, and they ended up cutting that segment out because one of the other contestants plugged the company she worked for,” Olsen said. "It was a bummer." Olsen admits Ellen is as down to earth as she appears on the show. “She looks as good in person as she does on TV, but she’s shorter than I thought.”

75 enjoy Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast A strong sense of community spirit was the prevailing mood at the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast on October 6, 2010. A common theme was affirmation to all those who let their names stand for civic election and a special commendation for Bryce Nimmo for his leadership over his term in office. Musicians who performed at the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast included Dr. Kelly Pasma and Michelle Pieke from Drumheller, and LaVerne and Arlene Erickson from Rosebud. The audience of 75 guests not only enjoyed the music, but also an invigorating speech from guest speaker, Wayne Hove. Hove encouraged those in attendance to keep Drumheller moving forward by getting involved in the community. “It was a great way to spend time with colleagues and reflect on the many blessings we enjoy,” says Wilfred Golbeck, president of the

Tom Armstrong for Council

Vote X

For Common Sense

I am Open, Honest, Straightforward, and I do what I say I will do. These are some of reasons I’m running for council:

Upcoming Clinics Date/Time

I am committed to revising the water rates, we are paying too much. As well, I will get to the bottom of the poor water quality at different times of the year and at different locations in town. This needs to be fixed. I would like to increase the access to downtown businesses and parking for the local shoppers and the tourists. As well, the system of no left turns by the Dinosaur, Tasty Delight, and on Railway Ave need to be addressed. We need to have more recreational opportunities for our youth. We need to help replace the skate park that they laost to the new Community Facility. We also need to revitalize the beach at Newcastle, there has been nothing done to repair the damage caused by the flood. Now that construction of the new Community Facility has started we need to concentrate on making this a self-supporting facility so that we do not see an increase in taxes in the future. I would bring my experience as former employee as well as my life experience to council and I believe that I could make a positive difference in the way that Town Council interacts with ratepayers of the town, I also believe that I could be very effective in representing the citizens of Drumheller in the future decisions that will be required of Town Council. Please Vote on October 18 Thank you Paid for by the committee to elect Tom Armstrong

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, you have the ability to change anything in your life. This week decide just what it is that you want to change and then get to work on achieving that goal. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, you are a bit frazzled this week, partially because people close to you are saying one thing but doing another. Once you sort things out, you will be more grounded.

Dynos improve winning record The junior high DCHS Dynos boys volleyball team have now cruised to a 5-2 league record after beating the Three Hills Royals in all five games last Tuesday. The Three Hills Royals came to Drumheller for a league match on October 12. The Dynos were in control from the beginning, winning their first match 25-23, and never looked back. It has been a strong season for the Dynos, even though they
