OPINION inSide STREETERS It’s Halloween night. Outside is dark, the trick-or-treaters have gone home, and you’ve turned off all the lights at your house... inSide Drumheller asks: “What movie are you watching?”

Michelle Devaney “The old 70’s horror movies, like Halloween, I Spit on Your Grave, or the original Carrie.”

The winners and nominees of the Business Excellence Award gathered for a photo at the end of the night. Five businesses received awards; The Atlas Coal Mine (Employer Choice), Lowleft Golf (Rookie Business), Sears Drumheller (Small Business and Business of the Year), 99.5 Drum

FM (Medium Business), and Freson Bros. IGA (Large Business). Linda Digby, executive director of the Atlas was named Business Professional of the Year. inSide photo by Michael James

Excellence Awards honour Drumheller businesses

Kyle Smith and Cody Gouin “The Conjuring. It was the scariest movie we’ve seen, so we’d have to cuddle.”

David Lloyd “Shaun of the Dead. It’s so awesome.”

Laurie Armstrong “I’ll be an exhausted mom, so probably sleeping.”

Drumheller’s best and brightest businesses were honoured this week in the Business Excellence Awards. The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce, in association with ATB Financial, Alberta Works, and Community Futures, recognized 16 of the Valley’s top businesses and three of the top professionals. “You want to reward the businesses that are trying hard and this is one way you can do it,” said John Shoff, president of the Drumheller Chamber. “There were some tough decisions there.” The first award of the night was the brand new Employer’s Choice Award, won by the Atlas Coal Mine. Linda Digby, executive director of the Atlas Coal Mine, also received the Business Professional of the Year Award. “It’s amazingly thrilling. It’s important to me that we have such a great place to work, because we sort of have an

impossible job to look after so much history as a visitor supported centre. The only way we can do that is through the power of laughter and positive energy,” said Digby.

“You want to reward the businesses that are trying hard and this is one way you can do it. There were some tough decisions there.” John Shoff Drumheller Chamber president

Several of Drumheller’s newest businesses were also recognized. Lowleft Golf was awarded the Rookie Business of the Year Award. Made in the Shade and Dry Canyon Collectables were also nominated. “We’re very happy. We were honoured to be nominated and now to win the award. We want to thank the Chamber, ATB, and Community Futures for putting on an event that supports small business in Drumheller,” said David Schinnour, co-owner of

Lowleft Golf. For the Large Business of the Year Award, McDonald’s, Canadian Tire, and Freson Bros. IGA were nominated. The selection committee chose Freson Bros. to win the award. “I’m just proud to accept the award on behalf of my team,” said Darryl Jacques, with Freson Bros. The Atlas Coal Mine, Foresight Vision Centre, and 99.5 Drum FM were nominated for the Medium Business of the Year Award. It was 99.5 Drum FM who took home the award. “It feels really good and heartwarming. It really makes us feel appreciated for what we do on a day-to-day basis. It’s great!” said Ryan Semchuck, station manager of 99.5 Drum FM. The Small Business of the Year Award went to Sears Drumheller. Sears was nominated alongside Sublime Food and Wine and Bits and Pieces Keepsake Quilting. Of the winners of the small, medium, and large awards, one was chosen as the overall winner. Sears Drumhell-

er was chosen as Drumheller’s Business of the Year. “This blows me away. This is just really humbling and flattering. I’m flabbergasted. Thank you to everyone who was involved with nominating and judging,” said Mark Notland with Sears Drumheller. The Chamber is already looking ahead to

the next Business Excellence Awards. “We’ve been getting feedback at ways we could improve for next year, like doing the awards every two years. We’ll keep building on it and make it an honour to be recognized,” said Shoff. “I would love to see more nominations, maybe even around 300 next year.”

Last Chance Saloon links past with future

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller An icon of Drumheller tourism and lore is forging ahead, and while it has new ownership charting its future, it is its history that makes it special. Dave and Videll Arsenault took ownership of the famed Rosedeer Hotel and Last Chance Saloon in August. The historic hotel and saloon is a mainstay for locals and visitors bringing the mining history of the valley to life. The couple is thrilled to be part of the future of Wayne. “It is exciting and it is fun,” said Dave. “Now that I am into it, I am really enjoying it. I am excited

about the possibilities.” The couple has enjoyed its first season operating the Hotel and Saloon, and the whole family is onboard. They are new to this type of venture. “I have stayed in lots of

hotels and ate in lots of restaurants, but I have never seen it from this side,” said Dave. They have taken advantage of some guidance from the former owner Fred and Alisa Dayman, and have

403-823-9189 www.visitlastchancesaloon.com

some long time staff who are very familiar with the operation to help them out. Dave says they plan to change very little, save for maybe a few menu items. “I know it is very iconic. I had many questions asked about what our plans are, and we are not going to change a thing. We don’t want to do anything to change the character of the building or modernize it. I feel it is our responsibility to preserve it and keep it intact. It has a character of a museum and you almost feel like a curator at times.” One tradition they are continuing and expanding is their dedication to live music. They are working hard to bring in top acts both local and from out of town. Already they have seen the likes of Joe Vickers and Tim Hus cross their stage. Tonight, (October 25) the Cat Country Cougar Hunters will be on stage for their Halloween bash. They are booking and aim to remain open for the winter. They are planning to host an “Old Fashion Christmas” and are taking bookings for Christmas parties and events. Check out www.visitlastchancesaloon.com or see their Facebook page for upcoming events.

? DID YOU KNOW??????

Did you the most effective way to deal with unwanted coyotes is to make the town as unappealing as possible? While it may be very difficult to remove prey animals such as deer and rabbits from the surrounding area if citizens are extra careful in securing attractants such as garbage, fruits and family pets it will help deny coyotes opportunities. This can help and please remember that just because coyotes are in the general area does not mean that conflict is certain. More information is available as the following link: http://srd.alberta.ca/FishWildlife/HumanWildlifeConflict/Coyotes.aspx . Please call Drumheller town hall bylaw office at 823-1363 if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks.

Public Skating has bugun and will take place on weekends

Saturdays 8:00 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. Sundays from 3:15 – 4:00 p.m.

These times are subject to change without notice. Please call the arena at 403-823-1328 to verify and watch the schedule for the Dragons Sunday games as they will cause the Sunday cancellations.

In the Badlands Community Facility this month, there is a display of watercolors and pastels by artist Jane Romanishko. Her thoughts on painting are: “Creating the energy of the painting is more important to me than the detailed record of the reality. I attempt to portray the true essence of the subject matter given in a single moment of time in the fewest strokes possible.” Please join Jane in the Art Gallery on Friday, October 25th from 5:00 – 8:00 pm where her works are currently on display for the month of October.

THE LEGEND OF BAD GUYS

Michael James | inSide Drumheller

T

he West was peppered with bad guys whose conduct was misunderstood Yet, today we treat them as heroes like they were a Robin Hood. We tend to portray them as victims, who, through no fault of their own Grew up to be convicts and perverts, but, hey, they were raised in a broken home. They’d rob from the wealthy it’s storied. They’d plunder and steal for a lark. Then pass out gift boxes on weekends to orphans and nuns in the park. They’d burn down a village but were sorry, and regretted things done even worse. Darlin’ Nell got caught in the crossfire, they cried as they lifted her purse. They never intended to hurt folks, but accidents happen, they do! Now we speak of them all with compassion, ‘cause bad guys have feelings, too. We sing of their legends in ballads, we lift up their deeds in a song And although it sounds so romantic, to me it seems dreadfully wrong. ‘Cause Pancho Villa was a narcisstic bag of sheep pellets. So was Billy the Kid. Jessie James became a hero for the foul evil deeds that he did. The bandit Joaquin was a horse thief, Claude Dallas a cowardly swain, The Sundance Kid was a scumbag who got his thrills robbin’ the train. The Godfather made folks an offer he said they couldn’t refuse If they did he’d take them out swimming, wearing their concrete shoes Bonnie and Clyde were both psychos, Pretty Boy Floyd was a rat And Pancho Villa was a narcisstic bag of sheep pellets, but I guess I done told you that. 32b

Residents waiting for answers from the province regarding flood damage funding will have to wait just a little longer. Drumheller Mayor Terry Yemen recently got word from the province regarding funding announcements and it looks as though it might take until mid November. “I had a conversation with Andre Corbould and he said he had about 100 people working on it now, so things should start moving forward,” said Yemen. “It’s realistic. They have a lot of work to do, but hopefully we’ll have some concrete conversations in November and see where we’re at with mitigation.” On October 3, the Town of Drumheller submitted its final flood report to the province. In it, they asked for money to cover the cost of flood preparation and repair any damage. “Our ask was about $10.3 million for mitigation. Ultimately, it’ll be their decision how much we get. The sooner we know, the better for sure, because we have people in low-lying areas who need to know what their next steps are,” said Yemen. Yemen approached the provincial Flood Task Force Chair Andre Corbould last week after being approached by concerned residents. The Town and province are working together to sort out the details of Drumheller’s recommendations and moving as quickly as possible to implement them. Yemen asked residents to remain patient. “People are talking about funding, but it’s all on the provincial government. We’re trying to facilitate and forward their concerns, but we don’t have the answers or purse strings,” said Yemen. “Considering what they have to do, the timelines aren’t unreasonable, as long as it’s that November timeline.”

Greentree School Breakfast Program volunteer Doreen Oliver accepts a donation of two toasters, costing roughly $172, from the Drumheller Rotary Club, represented by Rotary president Ken Briault. The toasters arrived just in time to replace the breakfast program’s aging toasters and serve up some delicious meals.

The countdown is on until the streets will be chock full of monsters, ghosts and zombies roaming in search of the

one thing that will sustain their evil desires... Candy. A group of business people in Drumheller are once again hosting Happy Halloween Trick or Treat. This is a great

way for families to come down and enjoy trick or treating with friends in a safe and wholesome atmosphere. Centre Street will be blocked o to make it safer. Connie Tremblay is helping to organize and says they are inviting the whole community to the event. It has become a Halloween tradition. DARTS is again participating with its spooky haunted house. “We are inviting the public to come and participate. I think it’s the biggest fun. It is for people who are really feeling like they are missing out because less kids are coming to their doors,â€? said Tremblay.

They will have some tables set up in the core for residents or other businesses that want to participate by giving out candy. The Pioneer Trail Centre will also be open for trick or treating and seniors are invited to come down and hand out candy. “Having the Pioneer Trail Centre open will give some of the elderly a place to go, because some of them said they really miss having the kids come to their place, said Tremblay. “This is for all of Drumheller. The Happy Halloween Trick or Treat is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. pm Thursday, October 31.

Pumpkin Carving There are few things associated with Halloween as much as carving a Pumpkin, but it can be extremely dangerous for younger children. As an alternative to carving, you can consider allowing your younger kids to use markers, paint, or a pumpkin decorating kit

without the risk of pumpkin carving with a sharp blade.

Wearing a Mask If you, or your child, are planning to wear a mask for your spooky night out, make sure that the holes for the eyes are large enough to clearly see both straight ahead and peripherally. You may have to cut the eye openings larger to allow more visibility. If any skin starts to show through the enlarged holes, you can always use some black face paint to cover the exposed areas of the skin.

The only time of year you allow your kids to take candy from strangers, you can never be too careful. Make sure your kids understand not to eat any candy or treats until they have properly examined by you. This allows you to check for any possible tampering with the candy wrappers; and at the same time, you get a chance at the ďŹ rst pick of candy!

Be Seen! Halloween is spooky enough outside without having to worry about your child not being seen in the dark while trickor-treating. Prepare your child’s costume for strong visibility at night by choosing a costume that can be made with bright materials. If the theme of the costume does not allow for bright colors, add reective tape to your child’s costume or treat

bag.

Watch out for bad monsters Sometimes there are monsters out that are more mean than spooky. Never let your kid go into a stranger’s house or even ring their doorbell for treats unless you are with them or say that it’s okay. There are some people in life that are not very nice to kids and you have to be very careful.

Stay Away From Haunted Houses Ensure your kids only visit houses with lights on. And, you might also suggest the houses they visit have some sort of Halloween decoration on the porch. Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s house. They can get their candy from the porch.

Monster Route Sometimes a lost or missing child can be scarier than a thirsty vampire, for both you and your child. Know the trick or treat route your kids take, especially if you are not going with them. Have them check in regularly, by phone or by stopping back at home and make sure they do not deviate from the pre-planned trick or treat route so you will always know where they are and will be.

Spooky time ies quickly Time always passes quickly when everyone is having fun. Always set a time that you expect your kids to be home and make

sure they know how important it is for them to be home by that time. You can also make sure they know to call immediately if anything happens that might make them late.

Take the Long Way Trick-or-treat only in well-lit areas. Stay on streets that you are familiar with, and avoid taking shortcuts through parking lots, alleys, and pathways. If you’re not sure where a street goes or whether it is safe, don’t take a chance on it.

Watch out for fast moving Mummies and Zombies Watch out for fast moving Mummies and Zombies! Always drive well below the posted speed limit in any residential area during trick-or-treating hours. You always want to make sure you have extra time to break if a child darts in front of your car. Halloween should be safe for ALL your little monsters As much as your pets may beg for candy or treats, remember that chocolate can be deadly, in any amount, if ingested.

Hungry Zombies are a scary thing A hungry Zombie can be a scary thing. A good tip to prevent your kids from overloading on candy is to serve them a very ďŹ lling meal before they go out for their trick or treating - it helps to make them their favorite dinner and a big dessert that spooky night.

way,” said Dawn Sullivan, head coach of the Dynos.

The Drumheller Valley Secondary School senior girls Dynos volleyball team are close to finishing their season. On Wednesday night, they hosted the Prairie Christian Academy Sabres for their last home game in league play. The Sabres won the match in two games. The Dynos came out strong, but a few costly missed serves by the Dynos gave the Sabres the edge. “We came out really strong, but stalled part way through the game. The momentum changes so quickly and it’s hard to get back. Volleyball is such a mental game that

facing Trochu and Acme in league play. “Acme was really strong, but the girls weren’t moving as well as they were tonight. For the girls, it’s a matter of moving and keeping focused the entire game,” said Sullivan. The season has been challenging for the team. “It’s been a rollercoaster. We’ve played really well at times, like we’ve gone to tournaments and played our best, then come home and had trouble,” said player Lauren Main. The Dynos have one more league game next week, then head to a tournament in Strathmore. Afterwards, they head to regionals.

Puck drops on minor hockey season

end as well. Over the next two weeks the games will determine in what tier each team is placed.

Last weekend, another exciting minor hockey season got underway. After a long summer and weeks of practice, the teams dropped the puck on what is assured to be another big year. “There have been a few games, but the older teams hadn’t played yet, so they were excited to play. There’s going to be some good hockey down at the arena,â€? said Jason James, vice president of the Drumheller Minor Hockey Association. Overall, enrollment in minor hockey has remained stable compared to last year. Roughly 150 kids, divided into ten teams, will be lacing up their skates for the Raptors. The ďŹ rst couple weekends of the regular season will determine what tiers the teams will be placed. “This weekend is basically the onset of tiering, which helps get the teams in the right division. Our goal over the next couple weeks is to make sure the teams are slotted into their proper tier. It’s in the best interests of everyone to have

the teams be competitive compared to each other,â€? said James. The Minor Hockey Association is hoping for another successful season after several teams earned league and provincial championships last season. James feels the Raptors’ success is due to the introduction of dry land training. Over the week, teams will head to the Badlands Community Facility to work on ďŹ tness and skills. “Our PeeWee team last year was phenomenal and a huge part of that was the ďŹ tness portion,â€? said James. “It can be hard to get ice time, so we can take things to the Facility and work on skills and cardio.â€? The Midget Raptors began their season last weekend with two close overtime losses to Medicine Hat and Vulcan. They look for their ďŹ rst win of the season on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Drumheller Memorial Arena. The Bantam Raptors opened their season with a big 4-0 win over Oyen last Friday. They play tonight at home at 7:15 p.m. The NGC PeeWee

Raptors had a tough start to the season, losing to Lethbridge and Taber last weekend. They head to Medicine Hat on Saturday. The Hi-Way 9 PeeWee Raptors got o to a good start with two wins, 5-1 over Okotoks and 5-3 over Indus, last weekend. They’ll be looking to rack up another win on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they take on Strathmore in Hussar. The Yavis Atom Raptors had a tough start to their season, losing their ďŹ rst two games. They will be looking for their ďŹ rst win at home at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Encana Atom Raptors had a 1-1 start to their season, winning 7-2 over Rockyford, but losing to Carstairs. The McDonald’s Novice Raptors will be looking for their ďŹ rst win of the season at home against Foothills on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Canalta Novice Raptors got two big wins to start their season, 16-1 in Brooks and 6-1 in Indus. They face Cremona at home on Saturday at 9 a.m. “It all comes together for the kids. They have fun and there’s a smile on their face; that’s what it’s about,â€? said James.
