OPINION Drumheller named one of Canada’s “places of a lifetime” Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller is once again in the international spotlight. Earlier this week, the Canadian Badlands were featured as one of Canada’s “50 Places of a Lifetime” by National Geographic Traveler in partnership with the Canadian Tourism Commission. The list also contains locales from across Canada, such as Prince Edward Island, Niagra Falls, and a few towns and parks in the Rockies. The entry for the Badlands includes Drumheller to Dinosaur Provincial Park to the southeast. In Drumheller, it highlights attractions such as the Royal Tyrrell Museum and World’s Largest Dinosaur, and the unique Last Chance Saloon in Wayne. It also recommends early June as a good time to come, so that visitors can catch the annual DinoFest cel-

We expect international travellers will be over the moon with Canada,” said William Harding, manager for emerging markets at the Canadian Tourism Commission. The list will be used to help market Canada internationally. “Some of the experiences in the Canadian Badlands, like Dinosaur Provincial Park and the Royal Tyrrell Museum, we work with all the time. We’re going to shine a light on them and do a big international marketing push,” said Harding. The list was compiled for National Geographic’s first digital super magazine. For each location there are stories and practical travel information. “This is a celebration of all that is Canada,” said Keith Bellows, editor-in-chief of National

Sorenson said it is fitting that the Canadian Flag, a symbol of hope around the world, will be flying in front of the college. He said the investment in vocational training is the hope that Canada wants and this project builds on the strength of rural communities. Crystal Jensen campaigns for council seat Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Long-time resident and volunteer Crystal Jensen is hoping to make a difference on the Drumheller Town Council. Jensen is one of ten candidates running for Town Council. “I’ve volunteered for a lot of different things over the years and while there, parents talk. A lot of the times it’s complaining about things in town. I think I can make a difference,” said Jensen. Should she be elected, Jensen wants to bolster Drumheller’s small business sector and encourage more businesses to set up shop. “I want to promote and support small businesses in Drumheller. A lot of people leave town to do their shopping. We could look at more incentives for small businesses to stay open longer in the year,” said Jensen. In particular, she wants to explore possibilities to help single mothers find jobs that help balance their professional goals and families.

“I’m a single mom and if you want to find a job in Drumheller, as a single mom, you won’t find one that helps you reach your goals. Unless you have extreme seniority, you’ll be working nights and weekends,” said Jensen. Jensen also wants to see more activities and places for children and teens in the community. “We need places for kids to go. There’s the Youth Centre, which just opened and is great, and there is the skatepark coming, but I think we need to do more for kids,” said Jensen. Jensen moved to Drumheller with her

CRIME What’s holding you back? Police focusing on seat belts in October

Submitted | inSide Drumheller

The Alberta TraďŹƒc Safety Plan for October is focusing on occupant restraints and the Drumheller RCMP will

be conducting various enforcement activities pertaining to seatbelts. Seatbelts are the single most cost eective life saving device to protect occupants in a motor vehicle collision.

It is the law to buckle up in all seats of the vehicle; otherwise, occupants become a deadly weapon to others in the vehicle. Wearing your seatbelt is a simple action that could make the dierence between life and death. The use of occupant restraints reduces the likelihood of sustaining an injury and the severity of injury decreases as well. Research and collision investigations show that seatbelts increase the chances of survival in a collision by 50%. According to Transport Canada, almost 40% of drivers and passengers killed in collisions were not wearing their seatbelt at the time of the crash. It takes seconds to buckle up and a lifetime to make up for a loss. Facts to Know: ¡ In Alberta, wearing a

seatbelt is required by law. ¡ In Alberta, the ďŹ ne for not wearing a seatbelt is $115. Drivers are also responsible for the proper restraint of children under 16. ¡ Passengers are not exempt from the consequences of ďŹ nes, injuries or deaths resulting from not wearing a seatbelt. ¡ Occupants using a restraint reduce the likelihood of sustaining an injury and the severity of injury decreases. ¡ Seatbelts save about 1000 lives per year in Canada. ¡ Seat belts distribute the force of a collision evenly to the stronger parts of a person’s body. In a crash, a vehicle travelling 50 kilometres per hour comes to an abrupt stop in 1/100th of a second. At 50 kilometres per hour, an unrestrained person, weighing 80 kilograms

(176 pounds), will strike whatever they hit ďŹ rst with a force of 2,785 kilograms (6,215 pounds). ¡ Airbags only function properly if the occupant is restrained in a proper position by a seat belt. Airbags deploy at an explosive speed and can cause injury if the occupant is not properly positioned. Airbags are a supplemental device. ¡ Vehicles are designed with an engineered life space, which can withstand the force of most impacts. Seatbelts keep occupants in this space where they are safest. ¡ In a collision, one unrestrained occupant increases the risk for all occupants in the vehicle. An unrestrained occupant may hit something or someone inside the vehicle; or they may be thrown from their vehicle into another object. ¡ Child safety restraints

are required by law for children under the age of 6 who weigh less than 18 kilograms (40 pounds). ¡ A child under 10 kilograms (22 pounds) and one year of age is safest in a rear facing child restraint. Be sure to consult the owner’s manual for guidelines. ¡ Forward facing child restraints should have shoulder straps that originate at or above the shoulders. ¡ Booster seats are recommended for children under the age of 9, 18 to 36 kilograms (80 pounds) or 145 centimeters (58 inches). ¡ Without a booster seat, a child is four times more likely to suer a signiďŹ cant injury. ¡ Children under the age of 12 are safest in the back seat of a vehicle in proper restraints based on their age, height and weight.

One year sentence after wild Riverside Drive Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A man who took a wild ride in a stolen SUV and ended up in the Partici-park in Riverside, was sentenced in provincial court last Friday. Carmen Briault appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, September 27. He pleaded guilty to a number of charges including an early afternoon traďŹƒc incident that saw two vehicles destroyed on Riverside Drive.

On September 4 at about 5 p.m., an SUV was taken from the DVSS parking lot. A few moments later, Briault, who was driving the truck, collided head on with a parked vehicle on Riverside Drive. Witness accounts say the vehicle ed the scene of the collision and continued along Riverside. It lost control near 12th Street and ended up in the Partici-park. He was taken from the scene by ambulance and showed signs of impairment. He plead-

ed guilty to operating a motor vehicle while impaired and theft of a motor vehicle. Briault also pleaded guilty to assault from a previous incident on August 15. In the early morning hours, he approached a man outside a business, pushed him to the ground and walked o. There were no injuries. He also pleaded guilty to an impaired driving charge from the early hours of August 25. RCMP observed the driver make a wide turn entering Highway 9 and

then swerve as it travelled down the road. The court heard that Briault has longterm substance abuse issues and his impairment in one of these instances was related to the use of a prescription drug with alcohol. The crown and defense agreed on a joint submission of one year in jail, followed by a two year driving prohibition. Briault was given credit for 24 days in custody he served awaiting last Friday’s appearance.

Town officials are giving municipal water a clean bill after receiving complaints from residents that their tap water wasn’t up to snuff. Tests on municipal water have shown bacteria and chemical levels to be normal. “We’ve done bacteriological testing and the results didn’t indicate any contamination. Other tests, like chlorine, came back good, too,” said Allan Kendrick, Director of Infrastructure Services for the Town of Drumheller. The Town routinely sends samples of its water for testing by an independent provincial lab. Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development also tests municipal water on a regular basis. Thanksgiving is a time we share our harvested bounty – and generally, if you planted zucchini, it is bountiful!

Zucchini “Ravioli” This isn’t really ravioli, but it is a packet stuffed with whatever assortment of fillings you choose. I guess that is how it got its name. I have seen recipes using a whole range of combinations. I will tell you how I made mine and then give some alternates. (If you don’t care for my choice of filling, you might find something else you prefer at the end of this column – or make up your own – the possibilities are endless!) I was looking for a Thanksgiving side dish. I think this is a nice choice because you have time while the turkey (or whatever main dish) is in the oven. These aren’t complicated, but look so impressive, your guests will think you spent hours! Once you have your zucchini sliced into ribbons, you are good to go. A mandolin is the ideal choice for a nice, even slice, but don’t let that scare you away if you don’t have one. Simply use the straight edge on a box grater, or another type of hand grater. Even a large peeler would work if the zucchini isn’t too large. This is what you need: One or two large zucchinis – as straight as possible 1 can of artichokes, drained, chopped Fresh, cooked mushrooms, sliced or chopped Fresh, cooked spinach, chopped 1 log of goat cheese (or a package of feta) Use the photos as your guide: Slice the zucchini, lengthwise, into long ribbons Lay two ribbons side by side, slightly overlapping. Lay two more ribbons across those two, horizontally, in the same manner.

3

Mix the ingredients in a small bowl, then place a heaping spoonful onto the centre of the zucchini where the ribbons criss-cross. Fold the zucchini horizontally over the filling. Then, fold up the vertical ribbons over those two (see photo). Hold in place with a wooden pick. Bake on a cookie sheet at 375 for 20 minutes – until brown and the inside is warmed. You could also do these on the barbecue. I have seen recipes where they are steamed or pan-fried. (as I said, this is an easy, “do it your way” recipe) You can add a sauce – see below. Top with marinara sauce, alfredo sauce, a balsamic drizzle….again, endless possibilities. Enjoy your Thanksgiving “your way,” . . . but remember to simply be thankful. Here are a few other ideas you could try:

Sudoku

Horoscopes

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Laplante explains, despite a world growing increasingly digital, libraries are essential. “Libraries are even more relevant than ever. We’ve become sort of an information hub, where people come here and ask about so many dierent things,â€? said Laplante. “The big thing now is technology, like e-readers, tablets, and social media. People are using library books from home, from out of town, and even Mexico. You can take your library with you, so now it’s portable.â€? During the month of October the Drumheller Library will be highlighting the many programs and services it offers residents.

Schools combine for Senior boys volleyball Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Players from DVSS and St. Anthony’s have banded together to get back on the volleyball court this season. While it did not appear that either school was going to be able to put a senior high school boys volleyball team on the court this year, a few interested players decided they wanted to play. Coach Audrey DeBona said they have been playing for about two weeks. They have nine players, five from DVSS and four from St. Anthony’s. “The kids phoned each other and asked if they wanted to play and they said ‘we can fit it 39tfcb

Last weekend they were in Bassano for a tournament and on Tuesday they played Morrin.

“We went to Bassano and it was a ton of fun, and did they ever progress in a single day,” said DeBona. DeBona said they are not playing in a league, but are picking up exhibition play. Because of the combined numbers of both schools to draw upon, they may be in tough when it comes to zones, as they will play

at the 3A school population level. In the mean time, the players are learning the game and having fun. DeBona said a couple of the players have never actually played, but are picking up the game quickly and doing well. “And they are only going to get better,” said DeBona.
