The Royal Tyrrell Museum and the Canadian Badlands Passion Play have both been named finalists in the Alberta Tourism Alberta Pride Award. Both Vance Neudorf, general manager of the Passion Play, and Leanna Mohan, marketing director for the Tyrrell are excited at the prospect of winning the award, and while they have partnered together to promote the valley, there is definitely a competitive streak. inSide STREETERS Full house at political candidates forum Tuesday The University of Calgary reported 89 per cent of Alberta drivers could not pass the written learner’s test when tested again. inSide Drumheller asks, “If you had to take the test today, do you think you would pass?”

Kellie Smith “Yes, I just finished helping my sons study for theirs. It has renewed my knowledge.”

Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller On Tuesday night, over 200 people packed into the Royal Tyrrell Museum’s auditorium to listen to platforms and responses from all 15 election candidates running in the October 18 election. Packed to its fire safety limits, people waited at the museum’s front doors to get a chance to listen to the mayoral and council candidates. Those in attendance submitted over 40 questions to be answered by individuals, and of the group of those, only three were asked – but revealed much about the aptitude and direction the hopefuls possess. The event was hosted by the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce and the Alberta Teachers’ Association SubLocal. Those who cannot make it to the polls on Monday, October 18 to drop their ballot for their ideal councillor and mayoral hopefuls have a chance to get their voice heard through an advance poll today, October 8, and October 15. Between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on both days, stations on the second floor of the Civic Centre will allow residents to cast their ballots for the municipal elections.

Margaret Lozinski “No, they have probably added more stages.”

Larry Wasmann “No, there are so many rules you don’t use on a regular basis.”

Voters are reminded that it is not necessary to check off six names on the councillor ballot for the card to be considered complete.

Editor inSide Drumheller Dear Editor, Regarding the Town’s outside utility contracts. What store owner would insist that he and his family pay more for the merchandise he sells than what he charges his customers? A trip to the funny farm would be in order to protect the guy from himself. The citizens of Drumheller are in the same situation. We own the store. We should be getting the discount if anyone does. Hopefully our new mayor and council can get us out of this mess that we have been subjected to for over 35 years by the Federal Government and destined to be held to ransom for another 19 years by the other contracts. Please vote on October 18. Yours truly, Cliff Johnson

Kinsmen Club contributes $50,000 to Badlands Community Facility Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Kinsmen Club in Drumheller has come through for the Badlands Community Facility, and has committed $50,000 over five years to the project. Work on the Badlands Community Facility has been picking up on the site, and behind the scenes, as evident by the donation on Wednesday, October 6 at Council Chambers. “We’re very proud to support projects in Drumheller, that’s what our service club is all about,” said Kinsmen president Darcy Schinnour. “We look forward to doing other projects in the future as well.”

The Kinsmen have been very active in the community and often support local sports teams and organizations such as the Drumheller Soccer Association and the Drumheller Titans. They also have a history of supporting recreation facilities in the area. Some of their fundraising efforts that support such a donation include casinos, the Jaydee Bixby concert earlier this year, and most recently a golf tournament. He jokes that the club is about more than flipping pancakes, referring to the highly successful Canada Day tradition, which the Kinsmen have hosted for years. “The Drumheller Com-

munity Facility is a very important project and a big step forward,” said Schinnour. On the site of the Badlands Community Facility, the pounding has stopped, as the steel piles are now in place, and construction continues. The Badlands Community Facility initial phase includes meeting and banquet space as well as a library, conference centre and a field house with a walking/running track. It is slated to be complete in the summer of 2011. Future plans include a new curling facility and a second sheet of ice. The Fundraising Committee has a fundraising goal of $12 million for the entire project.

The RCMP, in the interest of public safety, is issuing the following information and warning regarding a sexual offender who is residing in the Linden area. Chips with Salsa a little spicy but always welcome by C. Aiello

Fred likes to shoot, but doesn’t own a gun. Every other weekend he goes to the local range, where he is supplied a gun, 50 rounds of ammo, ear plugs and a place on the firing line. All this for the price of an annual membership. One afternoon Fred arrives, signs in, signs out a weapon and steps to the firing line. Instead of shooting at the target, Fred turns and shoots the guy next to him, picks up that guy’s weapon and shoots two more guys. He then turns to shoot the guy at the counter, when another member shoots Fred dead. Not bad, four dead guys, three different registered weapons. Seems Fred had a bad day, and life was just not worth it anymore. He determined that he would end it and knew just exactly how. Fred had slipped a cog. No one saw it coming, and no gun registry could prevent it. Things like this are going to happen, because people are unpredictable, but they are such rare occurrences that when they do happen, it shocks. The long gun registry was a gross overreaction to just such a shocking event, the shooting deaths of 14 young women at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, by a demented young man. The operative word is “demented”, the young man was mentally ill. I also have wondered if the reaction would have been the same had it been young men who died. Regardless, the long gun registry is a waste, and of little use, except to criminals. I’m sorry, but I can’t help myself. This time of year I am overcome by a melancholy that is a blend of a hankering for the past, the beauty of the present and a forbidding of what’s to come. It is a feeling that I love and hate, and I feel the same way toward the season itself. It is the most beautiful time of the year (which is strange because it is attributable mostly to death) and it is the shortest season of the year. To revel in its beauty would seem that we are revelling in death. It is a strange time indeed, yet I do love it. Forgive me. 40m

New name for DCHS narrowed to three

VOTE

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller The name of education in the valley is changing as the hunt for a new name for DCHS has been narrowed to just three. The Drumheller Mail informed readers in its August 18 edition that Drumheller Composite High School was planning to change its name has it heads into the future with its newly renovated facility. According to former principal Tom Zariski, much as changed to the school in its almost 50 years of history. “There are some problems with the name Drumheller Composite High School,â€? said Zariski. “Composite means academic and vocational school. There were a number of schools throughout the province that were designated composite. We feel now we are much more than that, with the international program, the special needs and the extra curricular. The ‘composite’ doesn’t ďŹ t us anymore.â€? He adds the institution is no longer just a high school because it oers Grades 7-12. Motorcycle crashes on North Hill Shortly after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5, Badlands EMS, the Drumheller Fire Department and the Drumheller RCMP were dispatched to a single vehicle accident on the North Hill. It appears a motorcyclist veered off the road while descending into the valley. Corporal Kevin Charles said the operator of the motorcycle was conscious and lucid when emergency responders arrived on the scene and

he was taken to the Drumheller Health Centre with undetermined injuries. Charles goes on to explain there was nothing in their investigation that indicated excessive speed or impairment were involved in the crash. The accident occurred on the same stretch of highway, where, in July, a motorcyclist veered off the road and was fatally injured. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

TAKE MY CARD PROFILE East Coulee artist Janet Grabner and husband John Dahm turned a dream of spending days creating arts and crafts into Caracol Clay Studio. After graduating with distinction from the clay and glass department of the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1989, Janet ran a pottery studio for the Calgary Board of Education for four years, teaching many classes. Janet and John found East Coulee on a Sunday drive, and fell in love with the natural beauty of the small hamlet. They moved to East Coulee in 1997, opening up Caracol Clay Studio, selling clay art and pottery to tourists, stores, and craft fairs from their gallery. Watch out for classes Janet will teach in Drumheller this coming year. The studio is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. until Christmas. Our Christmas sale is November 27 and 28, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. No GST at our sale.

Rainy summer delays Highway 9 construction, 575 work began Monday Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Over 60 rain days have delayed construction on Highway 9, which was scheduled to be complete by now, and as work begins on the repaving of Highway 575, the idea of both projects being complete by winter are not very realistic said an Alberta Transportation construction engineer. Highway 9 paving was expected to be complete before the paving on Highway 575 began this week, a week late, but the two separate projects will now cause delays for motorists heading out of Drumheller. “We’ve had an extremely bad summer. Prolonged periods of rain have slowed progress on Highway 9, making it very difficult keeping to the construction schedules,” said Dennis Grace, construction engineer with Alberta Transportation, Red Deer office. They have almost finished completing grade work on Highway 9 and are starting

on the granular base course to be followed by paving. Highway 9 has a contract completion date of October 15 for all works including paving, line painting, signing, lighting and guardrails, but that will not be met. Work will continue as long as weather permits – some years have seen construction continue into December, Grace said. Alberta Transportation will be monitoring progress and weather conditions and will work with the contractor to complete as much work as possible and leave any unfinished sections with a safe, drivable surface for winter. An asphalt overlay of 19 kilometres of Highway 575 leaving Drumheller past Nacmine and to the Hesketh turnoff began this week. Gordan Wilton, Contract Maintenance Inspector with Alberta Transportation Drumheller had said a date for completion on work there is not known, again, it all depends on the weather.

Construction on Highway 575 began on Monday of this week. Work on Highway 9 has been delayed this summer and is not planned to be finished before next year, but the safety of winter driving has been assured by Alberta Transportation. inSide photo by Kyle Smylie

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

3-2 on the road Tuesday, the Dragons hosted the Bobcats, boasting an 8-2 record in the last ten games, but lost 3-1. "We deserved to win, not to take anything away from the Bobcats," said coach Dan Price. "They just converted two whereas we converted one." Lloydminster opened the scoring on a power play after a Dragon tripping call halfway through the second period. Dragon Kevin McMil-

lan notched the only point for Drumheller shortly after from an assist from the team’s top scorer, Robert Geddes with 9 points so far this season. The Bobcats tied it up one minute after the Dragon’s equalizer, making it 2-1 until Drumheller pulled their goalie, allowing the Lloydminster to sink an empty net goal with only 20 seconds left on the board. Wednesday’s homegame will be the team’s last until next Saturday, as the team

will hit the road to meet Bonnyville again on Saturday, October 9, and then to Fort McMurray to play the Oil Barons Sunday. The Bonnyville Pontiacs sit in second place, one point behind the leading Bobcats. Drumheller took an overtime loss to the Pontiacs at home last Friday. The Dragons’ next home game is against the Sherwood Park Crusaders on Saturday, October 16.
