inSide Leeking awarded for service to Aboriginal community STREETERS Patrick Kolafa | them… they even helped inSide Drumheller

As the Alberta Conservative Party leadership race nears its end, inSide Drumheller asks, “Do you think the winner will be able to continue the momentum?”

Kevin Corcoran “All politicians are the same. They’ll all do whatever it takes.”

Pat Greene “No, I don’t think so.”

A Drumheller woman has been recognized for her service to the aboriginal community. Donna Leeking received the Dorothy Daniels Justice Award, and was presented at the Esquao Awards in Edmonton earlier this year. These are awards put on by the Institute of the Advancement of Aboriginal Women (IAAW). She is grateful for her chance to excel. “That hand was extended to me, and I am all about paying it forward. I am a real self help person, I love to see people take a look at their lives and deal with their problems in a good way,” she said. Leeking, a proud Métis, was born and raised in Drumheller. She left for a few years and began working in social services. She returned home and started her career at the Drumheller Institution. Leeking has been working at the Drumheller Institution for more than 30 years. She is the Aboriginal Corrections Program Officer, and facilitates a violence program for aboriginals. “Corrections Canada has been very good to me, they allowed me to promote myself,” she said. “What they did for me, I do it for

me to be proud of being native, which I wasn’t.” This is not her first award. She has received two medals for her exemplary service, as well as the Queen’s Jubilee Medal. She attributes some of her success to having strong role models. “I believe that because I was raised by my Kokum (grandmother), taught strong values,” she said. “My uncle Wilf Cunningham mentored me. He worked in corrections as an aboriginal liaison. These were two really strong people in my life who taught me well.” Elder Elsie Winnipeg nominated her, and Debbie Anderson, Manager of Assessment and Interventions at the Drumheller Institution, and Marilyn Kenny regional vice chair of the Parole Board of Canada, Prairie Region, supported her nomination. Unbeknownst to Leeking, her image is being used in a television campaign for the IAAW. She learned she was on TV from some of the people she works with. “One of the inmates said, ‘You’re a movie star now,’ ” she said. “Then I got a couple calls from people in the community who saw me on TV.” According to its web-

site, the IAAW promotes the self-determination of aboriginal women who contribute to the well being of their communities, promotes personal growth

of the recipients, and gives encouragement for those in the audience. Leeking was awarded at the 16th annual Esquao Awards.

The Drumheller and District Literacy Project celebrated International Literacy Day with community volunteers participating in an English as a Second Language Workshop. The guest speaker was Shelley Goulet, who is an E.S.L. specialist with Norquest College. The purpose of the workshop was to provide volunteer tutors with better skills to assist new Canadians with English language learning. International Literacy Day (September 8) was established in 1965 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in order to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and adult learning around the world. In Drumheller, the Drumheller and District Literacy Project offers free tutoring for adults who want to learn or improve English skills or upgrade their education. You can reach the Literacy Office at 403823-4668. Participants in the workshop were Darcy Dumas, Eileen Emann, Colleen Emann, Christine Pentelchuk, Bev Krabsen, Jan Quinney, George Foster and Tom Dooley.

McDonald. “We will also have sponsorships available that night.”

McDonald says they are planning to take time to raise awareness during the evening, and are also planning a specially prepared international meal highlighting food of countries sponsored by Compassion Canada. “The main thing is to get the word out. We live in the top 10 per cent of the wealthiest in the world, and often we live our lives and forget how the third world survives on so little,” said McDonald. “Many times that sponsorship for that child is the difference between life and death.” McDonald says they are hoping for a great turnout for the family event. He is also excited to have the new venue at the new Elim Pentecostal Church at the former Central School. Tickets are available at Elim Pentecostal. For tickets or information, call 403-823-3207.

Hard as it is to believe, there are actually people out there who think that the CBC gets no funding from the federal government. 1.1 billion dollars is hardly nothing, and what the CBC does with it is a secret. That’s right, the government (your representatives and mine) hands over 1.1 billion taxpayer dollars annually, and the CBC refuses to show its books. Who do they think they are, the Badland Community Facility Fundraising Committee? This one I heard on the SUN NEWS NETWORK the other night. in conjunction with the Toronto Film Festival, the CBC put on a very lavish party at the swankiest hotel in Canada. It was a party for all the celebrities, and psuedo-celebrities in attendance at the Festival. Hosting the soiree was the CBC’s coolest talk show giant, George Strombolopolos. When asked by an interviewer, why the party, well it seems George liked to party with his friends, and hosting something like this seemed like the perfect opportunity. It got weirder. When George was asked why he was hosting the party, he said that he always wanted to be in a band, that he was a tree, and that he wanted to be a tree in a forest, because forests grow things, and things grow in forests, blah, bla, bla. By the time he was finished, I thought, what the hell is this guy talking about? I kind of wished that George was a tree in the forest. A wooden puppet would have made more sense. It was a lavish party, the cost of which was never disclosed, but you and I paid for it, only we weren’t sent invitations! The CBC believes its job is to tell Canadians which party to vote for, how poorly government looks after those in need, how wrong we are to be in Afghanistan, how awful are Americans, how awful our oilsands, how wonderful our universal health care, and David Suzuki, and all things Trudeau. The federal government, your government gives the CBC 1.1 billion dollars to use how bad is the right, and how good the left. It’s time they fended for themselves. 38m

Police make another sizable seizure of drugs Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller RCMP has made another significant seizure of drugs along the highways surrounding the town. On September 15, the Drumheller detachment received a request from Calgary Police Service for assistance in locating a vehicle believed to be transporting drugs. At about 2:30 p.m. Constable Jones and Constable Maxwell located the vehicle on Highway 9, north of Drumheller. The result was the seizure of cocaine and crack cocaine with a street value of almost $24,000. It also led to the arrest of two individuals. Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins said the stop was the result of cooperation between the two agencies. The investigation has also

helped the Calgary Police. Hopkins said this investigation allowed the Calgary Police to attain search warrants, which resulted in more arrests and seizures of drugs and property. “The drug seizures here don’t only affect the town. The drugs that we caught were passing through, and the seizure here has far reaching consequences in other parts of the country, be it Saskatoon, be it Calgary,” said Hopkins. “All the tidbits of information go together to make a big picture.” Penny L. Siles, 45, of Chestermere and Lacey N. Ironman, 26, of Calgary have been charged with possession for the purposes of trafficking. They have been released on cash bail and are scheduled to appear in provincial on October 14.

St. Anthony’s will once again participate in the nationwide Terry Fox National School Run Day on September 28. The event follows in the footsteps of Terry Fox, who bravely attempted to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. This will be the seventh consecutive year St. Antho-

ny’s has participated in the event. In that time, St. Anthony’s has been one of the top 50 fund raising schools in Alberta, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories. The school has raised over $60,000 in the past seven years. This year, their goal will be to raise $6,000 for cancer research. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and staff from St. Anthony’s will start

the day with an assembly, where they will listen to a guest speaker. Afterwards, participants will run/walk through the one kilometer route for an hour. Students of St. Anthony’s are currently collecting pledges. All money collected will be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation. Donations can also be made online through terryfox. org.

If they are able to raise $3,000 at the annual cancer fundraiser, the legs of some of the male staff will undergo the painful depilatory process. Dreams of Joy Lisa See Summer holidays are over and everything is back in full swing once again for another year, including book club. We all had some good reads over the summer and compared notes and recommendations, adding to our ever-growing lists of “So many books; so little time!” The book we read with intention to discuss this month was Dreams of Joy, a Lisa See novel that is the sequel to Shanghai Girls, which we reviewed last year. The story picks up right where the previous book left off and follows the sisters who had fled to the United States from China. The central character is the very headstrong daughter named Joy. This novel takes place back in China during the communist regime in the late '50s. We get a good feel for the harsh living conditions in the communal setting. Suffering and deprivation was a way of life, despite the constant promise of a better life in this new China. We all agreed that this book had a

much better ending than its predecessor. We could all relate to the powerful bonds of motherhood, knowing the depths one would go to for their child. This is the fourth book we have read by this author and have enjoyed them all. Each one is set in China during a different era with a different historical focus. Some of us read Room by Emma Donoghue, which is a remarkable story told in the voice of a five year old. I found it very fascinating and most people can’t put it down once they begin. In my last column, I mentioned Little Princes as well. This is a true story written by a young man, Conor Grennan, who goes to volunteer in an orphanage in Nepal. He discovers the boys not to be orphans but rather children who were trafficked, and devotes himself to finding their families and changing their lives. It is a wonderful book that I highly recommend. You can go online and watch an actual video of the author, the children and see for yourself what the villages look like. It really brings the story home.

Strong turnout for Terry Fox Run Cindy Gerodo leads this year’s Terry Fox Community Run in a warm-up before heading out on course last Sunday, September 18. She had 44 of her students participate in the annual cancer fundraiser

and was joined by a strong contingent from the community as they headed out from Midland Hall. Drumheller has participated in the run every year since its inception. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Motorcycle Madness aids Humane Society Humane Society volunteer Ed Lehn (left) accepts a cheque for $2,500 from Motorcycle Madness organizer Harry Gough. The money is proceeds from the 2011 Motorcycle Madness event held in Drumheller on July 9. According to Mr. Lehn, the monies will be used for operating the new Humane Society shelter in West Drumheller. Proceeds from the annual event are rotated among several community charities. Downtown Drumheller Merchants also helped make the event a success. inSide photo by Ossie Sheddy
