OPINION Council votes unanimously for $5,000 to Hope College Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Town Council stepped up its support for Hope College. At the most recent meeting of Town Council, on Monday, September 23, a request was made by Hope College for Council to reconsider contributing financially to the post secondary institution. Council voted unanimously in favour of a $5,000 contribution to Hope College. “This decision and this contribution is tremendous! From the outset of the project to launch a college in Drumheller, it has always been envisioned that this college would be for the benefit of people living in this community and the surrounding region of East Central Alberta. The Administration and Board of Directors for Hope College wish to express its genuine gratitude to the Drumheller Town Council for this tangible expression of support,” Dr. Jon

Ohlhauser, President of Hope College. Earlier this year, Council postponed any funding to Hope College, feeling the college had not made enough progress in its business plan.

“Council saw they’ve made quite a bit of progress. They have students and are focusing on rural education, so Council thought it appropriate to give it support,” said Mayor Terry Yemen. Councillors who voted against contributing to Hope College earlier this year, were in favour this time around. “I was one of the councillors who voted against it last time, because I felt they didn’t really follow through with their commitments. Since then, they’ve really come

through. I feel they’ve done a really good job,” said Councillor Doug Stanford. Further funding contributions from Town

Council to Hope College will be discussed during Council’s next round of budget deliberations. “It’ll be talked over

again. We’ll be going over the three year budget process and it will be one of the items discussed,” said Mayor Yemen.

Town finalizes flood report for province Drumheller seeks $1.235 million for flood costs Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The Town of Drumheller is getting close to finalizing its flood report to the Government of Alberta. At the moment, the Town is asking for $1.235 million to cover the costs of the flood. The Town will deliver the report to the province on Thursday, October 3. At the moment, the finishes touches are being made on the report and will go to Council for final approval. The report examines different aspects of the flood, including where repairs are needed, where new dyking is required, and the costs associated with each. “We’ve identified im-

provements that are required in the existing dyking. We know there are concerns areas during the flood that required additional material to be brought in, catch basins, and storm sewers that acted up. All of that has been included in the report. The report is going to look at the hot spots and identify dollars available for all those areas,” said CAO Ray Romanetz. “The second part of the report looks at those areas that don’t have dyking and identified costs.” The report also breaks down the costs of the flood. The Town spent $310,000 in flood prevention, $417,000 in flood recovery, $10,000 for the Evacuation Centre, $373,000

for road damages, and $125,000 to fix damaged pumps. In total, the Town is seeking $1.235 million from the province. There are also questions the Town is hoping will be answered by the province. “There will be questions for the province relating to our growth areas. For instance, we need to firm up what the elevation for the 1:100 level will be,” said Romanetz. The Town continues to work on recovering from the flood. Crews continue cleanup along the Red Deer River, identifying damaged pumps and pipes, road repairs. Since the flood, the trail system and Newcastle Ball Diamonds have been reopened.

DVSS runs in memory of Terry Fox Paul Salvatore “You always have to watch the Penguins and Bruins.”

Students and staff at Drumheller Valley Secondary School took some time on Thursday, September 26, to run in memory of Canadian hero Terry Fox. The day started with an assembly where principal Curtis LaPierre talked about the history and legacy of Terry Fox and Sherri Nielson

shared the story of her daughter, who was diagnosed with leukemia when she was five years old. After over two years of treatment, Nielson’s daughter survived. DVSS student Madison Colberg was recognized for raising $1,100 as part of the Terry Fox Run.

Tara McMillan enters Council race Jenny Dannhauer vies for Council seat Michael James | inSide Drumheller

A candidate from the 2010 municipal elections is stepping up to the plate once again. Tara McMillan, who ran for mayor in 2010 and was narrowly defeated, has put her name in the hat for a position as a Drumheller Town Councillor. “I decided to run for council to serve the community and represent the residents of Drumheller,” said McMillan. “In the previous election, I ran for mayor and it was a very close race. Due to the time commitment of being mayor, at this point in my life it doesn’t quite fit. I feel this way I can better represent the people of Drumheller.” McMillan is looking ahead to completing a few different projects in town. “I want to represent the needs of the town, keep our taxes in line, be fiscally responsible, enhance recreation, work with the province on flood mitigation, and I’m looking forward to phase 2 of the Badlands

Community Facility,” said McMillan. She also identified berming and dyking as needs to be done in vulnerable communities in the Drumheller Valley. The key to moving forward for McMillan is for Council to work together and encourage growth in Drumheller. “I have a lot of ideas, but it’s a team effort once you’re on council. I think we need to grow our population and business base to give us a bigger tax margin and keep people’s taxes at a lower rate. We need more tourist attraction

businesses, but we also need businesses to serve locals. We need to find a balance between the two,” said McMillan. Three weeks remain until election day on October 21. McMillan hopes Drumheller will come out in force to choose the next Town Council. “The biggest thing is to encourage people to get out and exercise their democratic rights,” said McMillan. “These will be the people who are the backbone of the decisions that are made.”

the needs of Drumheller residents and has the experience to be on Council. “I think it’s important to be there and serve your community. I would consider myself fiscally responsible, but also looking towards the future,” said Dannhauer. “It’ll be a huge learning curve if I am elected, but I think I’ve served on a lot of different things and have a lot of good life experience. I love a challenge.” Dannhauer hopes to

address issues as they arise and feels the best way for progress to be made is for the Drumheller Town Council to work together. “I don’t think any one person can change the world. It has to be done by collaboration and working together for what’s best for the community,” said Dannhauer. Her and her husband, Pastor Dan Dannhauer, have lived in Drumheller for 17 years. Over that time she has worked closely with the Elim Pentacostal Church. Currently she works as a chaplain and in mental health at the Drumheller Health Centre. Dannhauer is encouraging residents to exercise their right to vote on October 21. “I felt this was the time I needed to step up,” said Dannhauer. “It’s a big jump, but I’m willing to give it a shot and if people are willing to give me a shot, I’d be happy to serve them.”

Drumheller Fund accepting applications for $10,000 Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The Royal Tyrrell Museum Cooperating Society is helping community groups this fall. Until October 25, 2013, the Cooperating Society will be accepting applications for the Drumheller Fund Grant. The grant was created to support projects that benefit Drumheller, with an emphasis on youth. This year, $10,000 is being made available. The fund is not being limited to one applicant, meaning multiple projects may receive funding. “Basically, the fund has been responsible for several projects over the years and has more of a focus on youth,” said Angela Keibel, business manager of the Royal Tyrrell Museum Cooperating Society. “The criteria is fairly simple and the application process is streamlined, so it’s ideal for any organization to apply.” To apply, applicants must be qualified donees as defined by the Canada

Revenue Agency. “For those who aren’t, you can partner with an organization who is. There are a few in Drumheller who are,” said Keibel. Other criteria include the project must be accessible to the public and funding cannot be used to cover operating costs, administration, buiding maintenance, and ongoing or pre-existing programming expenses. The Drumheller Family Endowment Fund at The Calgary Foundation was established in 1993 by the Royal Tyrrell Museum Cooperating Society through a donation given by the Drumheller family. The Cooperating Society directs the interest on the fund to projects in Drumheller each year. “It’s a wonderful legacy from the Drumheller family,” said Keibel. Applications are due on October 25 by 4:30 p.m. Those interest are encouraged to contact Keibel at 403820-6227 or angela.keibel@tyrrellmuseum.ca for more information.

Police Committee making difference Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller and Area Policing Committee, in its short history is making a difference in policing priorities. The committee has been in place for about a half dozen years and chair Fred Makowecki said it has realized its role to be involved in policing in Drumheller. “It is beyond buzzwords, and things are being implemented,” said Makowecki. The Police Community plays a number of roles. One of its main responsibilities is consulting with the officer in charge to develop a yearly plan of priorities and strategies for area policing. “Police are a part of the community,” said Makowecki. “All the components and priorities put on place are because people said these are our concerns.” Often the committee will use surveys to garner feedback from residents on where he believes resources should be focused. Makowecki said the committee also plays a role in gathering information for council, such as photo radar traffic enforcement. As an intermediary between residents and the public, it plays a role in resolving concerns and also appoints a Public Complaint Director so issues are dealt with in a transparent and methodical manner. Currently there are a few vacancies on the Policing Committee Board. It is open to residents from Drumheller as well as outlying communities the

St. Anthony’s students participated in the Terry Fox School Run on Thursday morning, September 26. As they headed out on to the course, a familiar face greeted them. Ava Wheeler created this chalk portrait of

Fox at the entrance of the school. Other students joined in to decorate the space on the day of the walk. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Our moments on earth are precious and fleeting and should be lived to the fullest. That is something we can all learn from Our Town. Rosebud has taken on the challenging Thornton Wilder classic in its fall production. While at the heart of the play lies a simple story, the telling of it involves complex layers, time shifts and direction from a character operating outside the action, but inside the play. The story is a slice of small town Americana, complete with young love, big dreams and characters plodding through life as the narrator stitches each vignette together to bring out a vision that is more than just life’s daily drudgery. The action plays out on a simple and almost stark stage, and tells an universal story of the small victories and losses in day-to-day life; the spark of love, unresolved yearnings, sacrifice and the human tragedy of death. Judith Buchan brings warmth to the role of narrator. Her natured compassion for all the players that cross the

Rosebud Theatre brings to life the fictional town of Grover’s Corner in its produc-

stage, big or small, illuminates each of their strengths and weakness. The play relies on subtlety. While the budding love of Emily (Heather Pattengale) and George (Byron Allen) is drenched in innocence and very concrete, most of the other characters leave their small words and actions to the audience to interpret. While Dr. Frank Gibbs (David Snider) show a disregard for his wife Julia’s dreams (Amy Burks), his sound scolding his son for not pulling his weight around the house is telling of his compassion.

CRIME Brothers found with stolen property on eve of flood sentenced Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Two men arrested in the dark of night when floodwaters were threatening the valley were sentenced in provincial court in Drumheller. Brothers Michael and Joshua Akey appeared separately in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, September 20. Michael Akey pleaded guilty to three counts of possession of stolen property and a Traffic Safety Act violation. Joshua Akey pleaded guilty to three counts on of possession of stolen property. On June 25 of this year, Drumheller residents were in a local State of Emergency as the

Red Deer River rose over night. Some areas of town were evacuated and that evening RCMP asked that residents remain in their homes. The police received early morning reports of suspicious persons and vehicles in some Drumheller areas. There were also reports of break and enters, and theft. At about 4:30 a.m., a suspicious vehicle was spotted by roving patrols and was pulled over. Initial reports stated the license plate did not match the vehicle and the driver was found to be suspended. Property reported missing from Drumheller was located in the car. It was also initially

reported police recovered property missing from other Alberta communities. Both Michael and Joshua had been in custody since their arrest in June. In the case of Michael, the crown and defense issued a joint submission indicating the three months he spent incarcerated leading up to Friday’s appearance was a suitable sentence. Judge Van Harten agreed with the submission. Michael was also fined $350 for his driving while suspended charge. There was a joint submission for Joshua as well, giving him credit for the 30 days he spent in custody awaiting Friday’s appearance. Both were released.

Likewise is George’s reaction to his father. Tears roll down his cheeks, hinting at a love respect, not overtly portrayed by the arrogant baseball playing teen. One joys of Rosebud Theatre that shines through Our Town is its ability to utilize a large cast to a great ef-

fect, all expertly playing a part in telling the story. There is strength from the milkman fighting his horse to the choirmaster fighting his demons. The acting is strong, the setting is nostalgic and the story is universal, making Redbud’s effort pleasurable.

15 days tacked on to life sentence Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A man who is already serving a life sentence for second degree murder had another 15 days tacked on to his sentence for assaulting a civilian at the Drumheller Institution. Jason Dorey appeared in provincial Court in Drumheller on Friday, September 20. He pleaded guilty to assault. The court heard Dorey was working with a civilian member of staff and they were in a heated conversation. Dorey threw a set of keys at the man, constituting the assault. Judge Van Harten added 15 days to Dorey’s sentence to be served concurrently.

Sudoku

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

GRIEF AND LOSS WORKSHOP at the Drumheller Church of the Nazarene

A Seven week course- offered Wednesdays @ 7:00 pm (beginning October 9th) or Thursdays @ 1:00 pm (beginning October 10th)

Terrapins and Titans go head to head Last Saturday, the Bantam Titans and the Peewee Terrapins both saw their afternoon home games cancelled. This didn’t keep them off the field as the two squads met up in exhibition. The Terrapins may have been a little outsized by the Bantams, but (inset) sometimes their speed made up for it. The Bantams are in action this Saturday at 1 p.m. at home to take on Sylvan Lake.

end it.â€? The gamed ended tied at 33. “We played well but we didn’t ďŹ nish the game, discipline and taking penalties were factors. It was a hard fought game, but if you give good teams an opportunity to battle back, they will take it.â€? So far, the Titans are 1-1-1 this season, a far cry from the league record, they have put up in the past. The biggest change is the dierent competition in the Rangeland League. “The dierence is we are playing more established teams, coaches have been with these programs for a long time so the chess match is deďŹ nitely there,â€? said Fournier.

“These are more physical games. Those guys are huge. We are the smallest team, but we are also the fastest.â€? Football Alberta does recognize that the Titans are playing in a league where most teams are tiered higher, and so far, their provincial ranking has remained competitive. However a win versus the McCoy Colts this Friday would bolster their ranking. “We know they (McCoy) haven’t done two well in the last couple years with some transition seasons, but this year they look like a well rounded team. They are solid on oense, they are solid on defense and they are solid on special teams,â€? said Fournier. “It will be a good test for use with so many players out of the line-up.â€? The Titans will be without Spencer Fournier, who had hockey commitments. Their roster is also depleted by injuries, despite it being early in the season. “We have been banged up coming out of the Hawaii game and have been struggling since,â€? said Fournier, adding the team is a little shorter on linemen that previous years as well. “We need guys to step up in this situation,â€? said Fournier of tonight’s game. “We hope it is a good weekend for us and we get going from all areas.â€? The game is at the Methanex Bowl in Medicine Hat at 7 p.m.

Dynos serve up volleyball season home opener Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Volleyball season at Drumheller Valley Secondary (DVSS) served up the first game of their regular season last week. On Wednesday, September 18, the DVSS Dynos hosted the Trochu Blue Jays for their home opener, where the Dynos lost 2 sets to 1. In the first set, the Blue Jays managed to pull ahead early, but the Dynos were able to get some key blocks at the net and big serves to come back win 25-21. The Dynos fell behind early in the second set and couldn’t gain any traction against the defense of the Blue Jays

and some miscommunication by the Dynos cost them a 25-15 loss. In the tiebreaker set, the two teams started off neck-and-neck, but after several missed plays and miscommunication by the Dynos, the Blue Jays pulled ahead for a 15-6 win. “We have a lot of new people playing together for the first time, so they’re not quite sure where everyone is on the court, but it’s coming,” said head coach Dawn Sullivan. The team then travelled to Three Hills over the weekend for a tournament. There, the girls faced some tough competition and came away with a 1-10 record.

“Even though our win loss record wasn’t the best, there were about four games we were within reach of winning,” said Sullivan. The Dynos were in Acme on Monday night, where they lost two sets, both 25-18. The roster for the Dynos is packed this year. Eleven players have signed up for the team, many of whom are in Grades 10 and 11. The team has been practicing hard for the past two weeks to get ready for the season. “They are improving every time they step on the court. We’re on the basics, because if you have them, everything else falls into place,” said Sullivan. The girls will be away facing Prairie Christian Academy tonight. Then, the Dynos travel to Calgary over the weekend for a tournament.

The season wrapped up two weekends ago from Drumheller’s motocross racers. A few Drumheller riders competed in all nine Alberta races and took some of the top spots in the province. Tori James finished the season in 2nd place in the 50cc division and 8th in the 65cc division. Barett Christensen won 1st place overall in the 65cc division and the 7-11 year old 85cc division. Barrett also finished 6th in the supermini. Spencer James was a close 2nd in the 7-11 year old 85cc division.

“Spencer and Barett battle it out the entire season,” said Sherrry Christensen, with the Drumheller Offroad Vehicle Association. “No one knew who the winner was going to be from moto to moto.” Decklin Christensen placed 2nd overall in the 12-16 year old 85cc division and the supermini. Daniel McNaughton finished 13th in the Junior MS-2 and 12th in the MX-3. “He had a huge accomplishment at the end of the season, turning into an intermediate rider. Watch out for this guy, he has a lot of potential,” said Chris-
