Area students participated in the annual Terry Fox School run on Thursday morning. This is one of Canada’s largest events and area schools have shown great support for cancer and cancer research. Above, students from St. Anthony’s School start their walk through Midland, while (inset) Eric Wu of DVSS bolts from the pack off the starting line. Students at St. Anthony’s each donned a sign answering the question “Who are you running for?” At DVSS, Melanie Skalk shared the emotional story of her own experience with cancer. Less than a year after being diagnosed with cancer, her son, Grant, passed away. Students at DVSS then headed outside to run in memory of Grant. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

inSide STREETERS Two vehicles were caught racing over 200 km/h on Highway 2. inSide Drumheller asks: “What, if any, penalty should there be for dangerous drivers?”

Ian Southern “I used to live in Germany with the Autobahn. Because it’s 200 km/h, it’s doesn’t mean it’s dangerous.”

Brianna Scott “If they keep doing it, the speeding tickets will add up.”

Daylon Kerr “What if they hit someone? There should be something to discourage dangerous driving.”

OPINION

Where were you in ‘72? Residents recall goal of the century Michael James | inSide Drumheller

It’s been 40 years to the day since one of the most iconic moments in Canadian cultural history; the goal of the century. Today, is the 40th anniversary of Paul Henderson’s series winning goal from the 1972 Summit Series. In the series, Canada’s finest hockey players went up against the Soviet Union to determine which nation could claim hockey supremacy. inSide Drumheller caught up with residents and asked where they were when the goal was scored. “I was teaching here at the high school and we were watching it on TV,” said Dave Wood, Education Director for Drumheller Dragons. “Because it was the final game, we tuned in. It was pretty exciting, we were ecstatic, because we were down 5-3 at one point in the game.” “I think most people in Canada were watching it.” Albert Durbano, hockey fan and former off-ice official, has a similar story. At the time, Durbano was working moving furniture in Calgary. “I was in Calgary at the time. I was working, but we stopped to watch the last period,” said Durbano. “It was a good game. Everybody jumped six feet high when Henderson scored.” Jim Fisher, who managed the Drumheller Miners wasn’t in Canada at the time. “I missed out on all the fun

back home. I was in Salt Lake City. We had to get the results via telephone, because no American channels were interested,” said Fisher. “I found it hard to believe, coming back on the Russians in the last 20 minutes.” Throughout the game Fisher, who was working as a play by play announcer for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles in the Western Hockey League, would get phone calls letting him know how the game was going. Fisher had also run into the Soviets during his time with the Miners. They played a game against the Russians only a few years before. “We played the Russians in Sweden in 1967 and I was telling everyone then in a few short years it’s going to take the best in the NHL to compete with them. It turned out five years later,” said Fisher. “We ended up beating them 4-3, but it was quite a game.” Fisher also recalled the Soviet shenanigans when it came to playing hockey against western teams. “When we played in Sweden in ‘67, you weren’t allowed to go watch hockey in Russia. At that time you didn’t know who you were playing, because the Russians kept things pretty secret. It was only a year before the Summit Series that you could go watch a game in Russia,” said Fisher. “The Russians would play games with you off the ice. If they knew [western] people were watching, they’d let in

goals from the red line just to throw you off.” Wherever Canadians were on September 28, 1972, it is a moment that sticks out in our collective consciousness as an iconic Canadian moment.

Garron Rish “With drunk driving you get a bunch of penalties and I would say driving that fast is just as dangerous. I would say a licence suspension until a court appearance.”

While the Town of Drumheller is planning to pull out of the Badlands Ambulance Society, emergency medical services will continue to be provided in the area. On October 4, the Badlands Ambulance Society will be meeting. They will be voting on whether to divest its ambulance service,

“At that time we had the naive belief we were the hockey gods of the world and the Russians were bursting that balloon a bit,” said Wood. “I think our national pride was restored.”

Paul Henderson celebrates after his series winning goal again the Soviet Union during the 1972 Summit Series. The moment has since become one of the most iconic images of Canada.

Seamless provision of ambulance service assured Melissa McKinnon “Definitely. They should have to do a course on driving safely.”

Bantam Titans learn from loss against Thurber It wasn’t pretty but it was a learning experience for the Bantam Titans last Saturday when they took on Lindsay Thurber of Red Der. The ďŹ nal score was 49-22, however coach Paul Redmond said it was not only an eye opener but an improvement over their performance last year against the consistently strong Red Deer team. “Last year we didn’t score a point against them, but this time we scored 22,â€? said Redmond. He said Lindsay Thurber came out strong and was able to run up the score.

DRUMHELLER

You’re going to get tired of reading about it, but I went travelling again last weekend. I got invited to the wedding of the daughter of a very good, old friend, at whose own wedding I stood as his best man, some 30 odd years ago. Fortunately for me, this wedding was taking place in a setting that I had never seen before, the Cypress Hills. I was excited, because that would put me in such close proximity to Saskatchewan that I could actually drive over there in about 15 minutes, allowing me to scratch another o the list of things that I had wanted to do this summer. The service took place outdoors, on the grass, with Elkwater Lake as a background. The sky was clear, the sun was shining, and the bride was beaming. It was a stellar day for an occasion such as this. The only thing that seemed out of place was the damn helicopter that ew over the service, not 200 feet above us. Damn paparrazi. When I told someone where I was going for a wedding, I was told to watch out for the elk and the deer. (Here we go again). I kept my eyes peeled for any and all large ungulates. On the drive down I really didn’t expect to see any other ungulate species other than the kind that moo, and wind up on the dinner plate. However, I did see another species, Antilocapra Americana, or Pronghorn antelope. I saw three small herds, numbering about 50 in total. I rarely see these beautiful speedsters, and I was delighted at the sight of so many. Apparently they are quite common in the Brooks, Medicine Hat area, but I don’t get down there, so this was a treat. Driving into the Cypress Hills is almost the reverse of driving into the Drumheller Valley. In one instance you are driving through undulating cropland, and drop suddenly 200 feet into a river valley of badlands; In the other, you drive over bare, atland, only to ascend 200-300 feet into hills and forest. Alberta, what a province. You’ve got to love it, don’t you Alison? On the morning after the wedding, Sunday, I got up early and went for walk. I walked and I walked, until I spotted a movement under a tree. I stopped, to determine what I was looking at. Sure enough, a red squirrel. I walked all the way back to the hall for breakfast, thinking that this trip was no dierent than the mountain trip last month. All the warnings about wildlife, and the best I can do is squirrels. (Like I need to leave town to see a squirrel). Later, as I was checking out, I made like a “smart guyâ€? and asked the girls at the front desk, “Where do you keep the elkâ€?? One of them said she didn’t know, she’d never seen one, and the other said she’d seen one, but it was a long time ago. Funny thing is, I walked the river trail the other night and saw 5 deer and 2 beavers. Now, if there had been a sign saying “Watch for Deerâ€?‌well, you know the rest of the story. By the by, when I hit Highway#1, I turned east, toward Saskatchewan. Scratch.

“They (Thurber) poured it on in the ďŹ rst half and we were kind of shell shocked, and just holding it together,â€? said Redmond. “It was the hardest they (the Titans) had to play.â€?

Redmond, adding the experience of playing such a formidable opponent was great for learning. “You have to play that level to really expect to win in the post season,â€? said Redmond. The Bantam Titans are back in action this Saturday as they travel to play Sylvan Lake. Redmond is hopeful the Titans will play well against them. “We really want to beat them‌ there’s kind of a rivalry developing,â€? said Redmond.

He explains that bantam teams are not tiered, but as a comparison, Lindsay Thurber’s senior team plays at a tier 2 level, the senior Titans play tier 4. As the game went on the Titans settled down and were able to play competitively. Nick Kakuk and Aden Enns each scored. Redmond said their passing game, with Mitch Ostergard as quarterback, was strong. “In the second half, it kind of evened out, said

The Drumheller Dragons are struggling as of late, losing their third consecutive game since last Friday. The loss gives the Dragons a 2-4 record and puts them in last place of the AJHL southern division, three points behind the Calgary Canucks. The Dragons were in Calgary on Tuesday night to face the southern division second place team, the Mustangs. The Mustangs got on the scoreboard in the first five minutes of the first period. Brodie Jamieson, with help from Bryton Mills and Brennan Baxandall, retaliated soon after.

“We haven’t played our best hockey, but I think we deserve a little better outcome than what we’ve been getting.” Brian Curran Drumheller Dragons Head Coach

The Mustangs responded with three more goals. Down 4-1, Mitchell Cook scored the Dragons second goal, off of Bryton Mills and Brodie Jamieson. A goal by Ryan Bloom, with assists going to Stephen Doane and Ryan Aasman, brought the score to 4-3 by the end of the first period. Blair Wentworth of the Mustangs took a kneeing penalty two minutes into the second period. The Dragons took advantage of the power play opportunity. Stephen Doane, with help from Christopher Rauckman and Brennan Baxandall, tied the game up. The score was 4-4 at the end of the second period. The Dragons took the lead five minutes into the third with a goal from Stephen Doane, assists going to Dakota Zaharichuk and Brodie Jamieson. However, it would not last. two more goals with just under 10 minutes left in the game. The Dragons couldn’t retaliate and lost by a narrow 6-5. “We’ve had some really good opportunities. We haven’t played our best hockey, but I think we deserve a little better outcome than what we’ve been getting,” said Brian Curran, head coach and general manager of the Drumheller Dragons. “We had three crossbars, a goal post, missed an empty net, and we had one puck in the slot we missed. The opportunities are there.” The priority for the next game will be to strengthen the defensive aspect of their game. “I think we have to tighten up

on our defence and capitalize on our chances. We need a commitment more to our zone and bear down on those opportunities in our zone. We need our goaltending to be a bit stronger too,” said Curran. “I think the boys are working hard, but have to stop doing all these fly-bys and get more physical, bumping, and finishing our checks a little more.” The Dragons headed to Spruce Grove for the AJHL Showcase last night. The Dragons faced the Sherwood Park Crusaders yesterday evening and will go up against the Olds Grizzlys tonight. The Dragons return to Drumheller on October 17.
