Sam Brown takes on triathlon Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
DVSS athlete Sam Brown has burned through the summer, and swam, biked and ran 61.6 kilometres, and that was just in two weekends. Brown, 13, competed in his ďŹ rst triathlon on August 20 at the 9th annual Fort Macleod Chiropractic Triathlon. He entered in the Olympic Category which included a 1.5 kilometre swim, a 40 kilometre bike ride and ďŹ nished o with a 10 kilometre run. He was ďŹ rst in his class, and he was the only one in his class, as he was the youngest competitor in the race. While even a registrar at the race had their questions about a 13-year-old racing in the Olympic category, as there were shorter races available to enter, he was undaunted. Overall he placed 35th out of all racers in the Olympic category an dhis time was only 48 minutes o the overall winner. “His goal was to ďŹ nish it because this was his ďŹ rst one,â€? his mother Audrey DeBona told inSide Drumheller. She says next year he will be working to be more competitive as he holds himself to very high standards. This is reected in the Grade 8 student’s success in sports; he skis, plays basketball, volleyball and competes in track, and in school where he is a strong

student. While you would think it would be time to coast after taking on as gruelling a course as a triathlon, he was on the starting line again on August 27, this time at the Taber Corn Fest. He and teacher Ryan Hatch both took on the 10K road race. He competed in the 1317 age category and won a bronze medal with a time of 47:12. Hatch also did well at the race, ďŹ nishing at 43:28 and winning bronze in his age category. This isn’t all for racing this season for Brown. Last year

EARN EXTRA CASH
Work has been progressing at a feverish pace, as Elim Pentecostal Tabernacle gets ready to make its complete move to its new home at the former Central School in downtown Drumheller. The local church, looking to grow, was able to secure the new facility in a deal with Golden Hills School Division last June. Since then, they have been working hard to get the facility ready. The main push has been to have the day care open. The church has dedicated 7,500 square feet to the Little Explorers Child Care and Discovery Centre, and has renovated the second floor north wing to accommodate the facility. This includes new flooring, paint and plumbing in each classroom. They expect to have the day care open by September 12. Lead Pastor Dan Dannhauer has taken a hiatus from the

pulpit to act as general contractor for the project. They have brought in some contractors along the way, and have also relied on inmate labour and volunteers to get the facility whipped into shape. The centre of the building will be used for a youth centre where they will run programs. The facility will also house all of the church offices. On Sunday, the gymnasium will be used as its sanctuary for mass, and on Wednesday night the church holds its family
nights. For these activities, they will have rubberized flooring to protect the gym. The gym will also be available on most days for rental to community groups. Dannhauer says they already have interest from groups including a floor hockey league and even Zumba. Part of the facility will be available to community groups for use as offices or studio space. Dannhauer said the Badlands EMS is planning to use the space, as is the Tricia Hatch Dance Studio.

FireFit benefits Community Facility The 2011 Scotts FireFit Southern Alberta regional competition was a success as hundreds came out to see firefighters from across Canada showcase their skills. It was also a success in supporting the community. On August 26, coordinators of the Drumheller FireFit competition Duane Bolin, left, and Merv Smith, right, presented Heather Little, marketing and events coordinator for the Badlands Community Facility, a cheque from the Drumheller Fire Department Association for the Badlands Community Facility, funds raised from the competition. Proceeds from the event have also benefitted the Drumheller Titans, the Drumheller Dragons and the DVSS Dynos basketball program. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

I didn’t know Jack Layton, and I will not speak ill of the dead, but I can’t reconcile all the great fuss, and pomp and ceremony being accorded to him in his death. I thought he was a smart politician, although I did not share his politics and he seemed to be a compassionate man, but a state funeral? Why? One minute of silence in memory of Jack, at a Blue Jays ball game? Really? I will give you the fact that it was a sad thing for Jack Layton, to finally have his hands on the golden fleece, and then to have it so suddenly pulled from his grasp. To at once have what you have worked so hard to achieve, and then not live long enough to enjoy it. It is a sad thing to see an energetic, smiling, vibrant man, lose that energy, that smile, that vibrance, that very life, to a horrible, unfeeling, indiscriminate killer. I may have ripped Jack Layton in the past, but today I can only R.I.P. him.
I noticed a billboard sign on the road to Rosedale, on the south side of the highway, about 200 yards east of Wal-Mart. It’s a political advertisement for the Progressive Conservative party of Alberta, and I’m guessing that whoever owns the sign, made money coming and going. If you are going east toward Rosedale, the sign has a large picture of Alison Redford, top contender for the leadership of the party. Coming west, the picture is one of Redford’s top opponents for the job, Doug Horner. It’s kind of a funny sight, I mean you would have never seen Brian Mulroney and Joe Clark sharing a billboard. Maybe P.C. Alberta, doesn’t know abut it, and the sign owner double billed. P.C. Alberta, flush as it is, simply signed the bill and paid it. As an aside, this Alison Redford likes to cover the bases. In Monday’s Sun newspaper, there is a picture of her arm in arm with Doug Griffiths, another contender for leadership of the party. Then again, maybe she got her Dougs mixed up.

Annual contest-winning Potato Salad
Once again, we hosted the annual “Shuswap Cook-Off “ with this year’s category being salads. There were 13 mouth-watering choices to sample and vote on name, taste and appearance. We had an outstanding assortment which included beet salad served in endive boats, curry salad, Greek salad, Italian bread salad, Caesar salad, and spinach caper salad with lots of fruits and nuts in it. The winning name was a Thai chicken salad that was served in a lettuce leaf wrap. It was called “Let-tuce not be chicken and Thai one on!” The most appealing to look at was a watermelon salad named the Princess of Salmon Arm - a lovely fish carved from watermelon sporting all accessories including pearls! And the grand prize being the most popular and tasteful went to the good old down-home potato salad. I wasn’t sure if Hilda would share her family recipe, but in exchange for the coveted trophy, she did agree. You might like to adapt your favorite potato salad to include anything she has in there that you might be missing to make yours a winner.
Hilda’s potato salad 5lb. new potatoes, boiled whole for about 20 min. cubed when cooled 1 doz. hard boiled eggs - 6 cubed and 6 grated 6 - 3” dill pickles, cut into small pieces 8 green onions cut into small pieces 1 med. purple onion chopped finely 1 cup Miracle Whip (you can use Mayo if you prefer) 1/4 c. The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves
in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Gough concurs Machu Picchu August 3, and by August 6, they were on their way up. They put in four long days over 43 kilometres. “You get up bright and early and hike until it is dark. Based on the elevation you just can’t go at the speed you can do around here. It is not just as if you were climbing upwards, you would descend so you can climb back up again.” Gough trained in Canada before he left by hiking upwards of 10 kilometres a day, as well as training at higher altitudes in the Kananaskis to prepare his body. While he was proud of his efforts, he was in awe of the porters who would run past them on the trail to set up and break camp for the hikers along the way. He was with a team of 39 walkers all on the Joints in Motion for the Arthritis Association. Trevor and Cathy completed the trek in dedication to

Trevor Gough comes home with feeling of accomplishment that could only come from climbing to Machu Picchu in Peru. Trevor, with his sister Cathy, and her boyfriend Allan Dias hiked for four long days to the ancient site almost 8,000 feet above sea level. They travelled the Inca Trail over ridges ascending to the area of 14,000 feet. “I went, I saw and I did,” said Gough. “It was an experience, let me tell you. It was beautiful, very challenging and hard on the head, definitely when the elevation gets to 14,000 feet it can be a real factor. It definitely was one of the highlights of my travel career so far. Seeing Machu Picchu coming through the sun gate was unbelievable.” The group arrived in Peru on

their mother and aunt who are suffering from arthritis. He said the group bonded, and have built lasting relationships. “You are sleeping about two feet apart in tents that are paper thin, you get to know each other pretty well,” chuckles Trevor. “There will be lots of emails and Facebook sharing.” In total, the group raised $300,000 across Canada. Trevor raised $8,000 alone. Both Cathy
and Allan raised in the area of $7,700. Trevor is grateful for all the support he had in Drumheller from those who donated or attended fundraisers leading up to the event. He is also appreciative to the Sports Room Source for Sports for helping to outfit him on his journey. Joints in Motion encourages people to achieve their goals of taking on a trek, from hikes to marathons, and help raise much needed funding for arthritis
research and programs. This coming year there are Joints in Motion treks everywhere from a half marathon in Prague to a cycling trek through Provence. "I enjoyed it so much, and enjoyed the people so much and what they were doing with the money. So much of the money goes to the Arthritis Society itself that I would probably consider doing another,” said Gough.

CLUES DOWN 1. Japanese mainland island 2. Release from sleep 3. Grey or white wading birds 4. A small quantity of food 5. Compelled to go 6. Pitcher Hershiser 8. No. German port city
Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! Sponsored by

Young Dragons shine in exhibition play Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
With the abundance of talent showcased at the Dragons Main Camp and at the team’s first exhibition game, the management has some tough choices as they narrow down the squad. The Dragons only dressed new players and prospects for the game Tuesday night at home versus the Olds Grizzlies. Some bright spots shone through as the Dragons won 3-1. “We really controlled the offensive end despite how young our guys were,” said coach Dan Price. “Olds’ line-up was pretty young as well but they had about five or six returning players in the line-up.” The Dragons scored on their second shift as 1995 - born Tristan Reimer connected, assisted by Jacob Schwarzen-
berger. The two struck again to put the Dragons up 2-0. The Grizzlies scored in the second but Connor Haney put the Dragons up 3-1 in the third. All three players have a chance at playing for the Dragons in the future. “Reimer has been interesting. To be honest we didn’t anticipate having a 16-yearold on the team this year. We are just deeper and older, but he was one of the best players on the ice Tuesday night,” said Price. “He is making a really strong case at 16 to make the team.” He said the Dragons and Reimer have to weigh what he can contribute to the team or if another year of Midget will help him develop, giving him more ice time. “Schwarzenberger, he is close. He is 18, and would have to find a way to fit on the
third or fourth line right now, based on our depth at forward. If not, we want him to go back to Junior B in Stettler and affiliate with us and possibly play with us at 19.” The other surprise was Las Vegas born prospect Haney. He was recommended by a scout, and came on a try-out basis. Standing 6ft, 6in, he is working on skating and control and has good puck work. On top of last night’s goal, he scored twice in the Miner’s Cup. “We didn’t anticipate him staying around as long as he has, but he is really making a case for himself,” said Price. “At the end of the day, and the reality of it is, he is just playing so well and improving so much every day it is going to be tough to send him home. And if we do send him home, it will be to a really good Ju-

nior B program where we can keep an eye on him, and who knows, maybe he can join us part way through the year or next year.” While some are still vying for a spot, some look like they have earned a place on the roster, including Drumheller native Spencer Samuel. “He has been a pleasant surprise. In the third inner squad game, he scored four goals including a natural hat trick. These were good goals, picking the puck up at high speed and in stride,” said Price. “He is a player who has demonstrated he can play on both sides of the puck offensively and defensively.” Other players who look like they will be playing the season as a Dragon are Alex Pronchuk, who had 52 points last season playing for the Junior B High River Flyers; Josh Peters, 19, who played with the North Peace Navigators and 20 year
olds Julian Frazer and Zach Baba who both played in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. “There is still a long way to go, they have to keep proving themselves,” said Price. The Dragons are also working on narrowing down a goalie. As of Wednesday, they still have four in their list. “They are all neck and neck,” said Price. “We don’t know what we’ll do, all I know is that all four goalies who are currently in camp are all quality. The preseason for the Dragons continues as they head east to play Kindersley of the SJHL on Saturday, September 3. Kindersley returns the favour on Monday, September 5. The final preseason game is in Olds on Tuesday, September 6. Price expects they will have most of their returning players worked into the line up by then.
