The Tour of Alberta bike race is rolling through Drumheller today, so inSide Drumheller asks: “Will you be out watching?”

Adrine Giles “Yes, it should be fun. It’s not the Tour de France, but it’s the closest we’ll get.”

OPINION

World’s top cyclists race through Drumheller Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Today (Friday, September 6), Drumheller is getting a chance to shine on an international stage when the Tour of Alberta races through town. Mayor Terry Yemen attended the first day of racing in Edmonton earlier this week and is expecting an exciting day in Drumheller. “It’s very exciting. I didn’t know much about the international biking scene before, but being up here and seeing the fan support is like being at the Superbowl,” said Yemen. “It’s incredible they’re coming through Alberta and Drumheller.” The racers are some of the best in the world.

Including, Peter Sagan, who won Stage 1 on Wednesday and the prologue the day before. Yemen was at Winston Churchill Square in Edmonton for the prologue race and, though the race itself is exciting to watch, noted everything else the Tour of Alberta

“It’s really going to put us on the world map. Maybe next year we’ll get more international bikers through here, instead of going from Calgary to Banff. What a great way to end a summer.” Mayor Terry Yemen

has to offer. “There’s a whole carnival atmosphere that comes with it, so it’s go-

ing to be a great day for Drumheller,” said Yemen. It is expected the racers will start arriving in Drumheller between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. for their first pass through town. The racers will descend into the valley on Highway 9 South, then travel north on to 5th Street East and Riverside Drive. From there, they head on to Gordon Taylor Bridge and north out of town on Highway 9/56. The race then turns west past Morrin and loops back to Drumheller via Highways 837 and 575, past Nacmine. The race then turns into Newcastle on 12 Street West, then east on to Newcastle Trail and 3rd Avenue. The final leg will go from 3rd Avenue

to Railway Avenue East, to 5th Street East and Riverside Drive, and finish in front of the Badlands Community Facility. The hope is the Tour of Alberta will draw more international visitors next year. “It’s really going to put us on the world map. Maybe next year we’ll

get more international bikers through here, instead of going from Calgary to Banff,” said Yemen. “What a great way to end a summer.” Everyone is encouraged to come and cheer the racers as they go through Drumheller and then attend the festival at the Badlands Community Facility.

Nimmo to run for Town Council in October After a term away from local politics, former Mayor Bryce Nimmo is ready to go back into the ring. Nimmo, who served as Mayor from 2006-2010, has decided to run for a position as a Drumheller Town Councillor. “We need to look ahead, said Nimmo, noting his concern about the future of the community. Bryce and Rosalie came to the valley in 1996 as owners and operators of Taste the Past. Following the sale of their bed and breakfast business, they made the decision to remain in Drumheller because of their love of the people and the town. With his experience, he brings a vision for the future of Drumheller. During his time as mayor he said there were a number of studies completed chock full of innovative ideas on how to boost the local economy and tourism. He said Drumheller is a unique community

and has the opportunity to position itself as a desirable place to visit, live and retire.

Bryce Nimmo‌ to run for council

“We have a beautiful hospital, we have doctors, we are an hour and half from an international airport and have all the needed services, said Nimmo. He believes economic growth is the most important way to grow the tax base of the community and maintain a high level of service. “We all have concerns about tax increases over the last few years, but the way to keep your taxes down is to attract more businesses and residents

to expand the base, said Nimmo. He applauds the efforts of Drumheller Town Council, especially for its eort during the ood and continuing to stand up for the community during the recovery process, adding the response of volunteers during the ood was a testament to the community spirit of Drumheller. The future of Drumheller lies in continuing to attract and retain residents. Part of that is encouraging businesses to open and operate in a free and competitive atmosphere, and to continue developing to make the valley attractive for people to call home. He says the success of the Badlands Com-

munity Facility is proof that these are the kinds of amenities that people want and it is important to bring the second phase of the facility to fruition.

ROAD CLOSURES TOUR OF ALBERTA Thursday Sept 5 10:00 a.m.– Street closure on Riverside drive East/1st Ave West from Veterans Way to 1st St. West (No access to Riverside drive East/ 1st Ave. West to northbound traffic from Centre St. and 1st St. West) Thursday Sept 5 3:00 p.m. – Street closure on Centre St. from 2nd Ave West to Riverside drive East/1st Ave. West Friday Sept 6 06:00 a.m. - Street closure expands on Riverside drive East/1st Ave. West from 1st St. West to 2nd St. West (right turn at fountain/splash park access to go north over Gordon Taylor bridge will be shut down) Friday Sept 6 12:00 p.m. – Street closure expands to close 1st St. West between Riverside drive East/1st Ave. West and 3rd Ave. West. There are “rolling temporary road blocks as the racers make their way along the race course. For this we have the volunteer course marshals which we will plot on intersecting roadways to the course and ahead of the riders during the race by approx 15 minutes there is the advance entourage of the tour’s own course officials as well as RCMP members/vehicles to essentially clear the way for the riders and ensure there are no obstructions, hazards etc just before the racers pass. The volunteer course marshals will block any traffic from an intersecting roadway just before the racers arrive and will release the temporary closure just after the vehicular race entourage (team vehicles, medics, race officials), that follows the racers, passes. Tour of Alberta organizers will begin the tear down of all structures etc. temporarily erected at the Big Dinosaur/BCF around 7:00 p.m. on the 6th. They should be all done and gone by midnight. We will need authority for road closures until 12:00 p.m. Sept 6, if they clear out early and all roads can be returned to normal prior to midnight then so much the better.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Rides Summer is over and this will be the last cool ride featured the year! Thank you to everyone who participated and to everyone who called in those hot tips!! Call us at 403-823-2580 or email news@insidedrumheller.com

Rare Merc turns heads Craig Comstock has a soft spot for old Ford cab-overs and when he told his dad, his pop’s response was “ask your uncle.” There he found not a Ford, but a bright red Mercury in Burdett, Alberta. The 1961 Mercury Econoline is a rarity. It was sold exclusively in Canada under the Mercury name in limited numbers. Making Comstock’s truck even more rare is being the very first model year and manufactured in Oakville, Ontario. Half way through the model year all assembly was moved in Lorraine, Ohio. While it’s pretty cool to

look at, the cab-over design wasn’t the best handler and the manufacturer added a 165-pound weight behind the rear axel to balance out the ride. While the body and trim is complete and there is more than enough metal to work with on a restore, mechanically the inline six and three on the tree has been swapped out for a 289 V8 with an automatic transmission. The truck not only turns heads, but also gives him years of tinkering fun. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Visitors share positive Drumheller experience Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The season is coming to an end with our final issue of The Weekender, a section of inSide Drumheller that share with locals and visitors the latest in events throughout the valley. inSide Drumheller’s favourite exercise after a long fun summer is drawing for a winner of our “Great Drumheller Dinosaur Challenge.” While we always enjoy handing out a $100 gift to the winner (this year it was Vernon Lane of Three Hills), the best part is opening up the box and reading the comments from the residents and visitors who share this great valley. Again, there were dozens of entries from all across Alberta and Western Canada. And once again, visitors shared positive experiences of the valley. It goes almost without saying that dinosaurs were the top attraction, and the efforts the Dino-Arts Committee have been making to beautify the valley have been noticed. This includes its latest installation “Sam” the motorcycling dinosaur at the Brick. It now stands to reason that a dinosaur can officially be described as “cute.” The scenery of the valley also get high marks with dozens of entries telling of the beautiful vistas. Another popular comment was “friendly “ when talking about service at businesses and attractions, exhibiting professionalism. Clean comes up as a descriptor for the town as well. One visitor from Victoria simply describes their time in Drumheller as “Epic.” One thing that always shines through in these comments is civic pride. Dozens of entries simply say, “love it” or “So glad I live here.” These comes from long-time residents as well as new Drumhellerites. As one exclaimed “we just moved from Calgary in March and are loving the friendly town and wildlife around.” Not only does Drumheller prove to be a popular and fun destination, but our contest continues to be a hit. As one entry from Edmonton says, “How come I don’t win? Three years in a row trying to win!”

BREAK Crossword

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Calling all Poutine Lovers! I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t love poutine. I found a new idea for the same flavors, same concept, but easy to eat as a finger food! This works well as an appy but also as a meal with a salad.

POUTINE POTATO SKINS Select the large baking potatoes. Each one will make four servings. (I find two per person is good, but adjust amounts accordingly.) Bake potatoes and let cool. Cut into four wedges, then scoop out - leaving about ¼ inch of potato. Line each wedge with thinly sliced, cooked, roast beef pieces (about 1” pieces). Top with white cheese curds, then drizzle with thick gravy. Bake at 375 just long enough to warm and melt everything – about 10 minutes.

Drumheller’s racefilled weekend continues on Sunday with the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon. Race organizers are asking residents help keep the runners safe by sharing the road during the race. Unlike previous years, the race will be going through residential and commercial areas of Drumheller on the morning of Sunday, September 8.

“Come out and support the runners and try not to drive when they’re going by. If you do, drive safely and give a lot of room for the runners.” Colin Kloot

“Come out and support the runners and try not to drive when they’re going by. If you do, drive safely and give a lot of room for the runners,” said Colin Kloot, one of the organizers of the Half Marathon. For the half marathon and 10K the runners will start at the Badlands Community Facility, run along Riverside Drive, and then turn west on 3rd Avenue, where they will run on the north side of the street to 5th Street West. The race will be downtown between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. “We’re asking people to refrain from parking on the north side of the road to give the racers room to run,” said Kloot. The runners will also wind their way through Midland. Residents are asked to be vigilant if driving. So far, over 500 people have registered for one of the three races. There is still room to register, by either picking up a form at Herman, Kloot & Company in downtown Drumheller, or by signing up the morning

of the race. For participants of the 5K distance, which goes from the Badlands Community Facility, through the trails, to Drumheller Valley Secondary School, there is a trophy for the best team costume. “In the 5K is the costume competition for teams of four people. There’s a trophy for the team with the best cos-

tumes,” said Kloot. Race packages, for those who have registered, are available at the BCF starting Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., again on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and until 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. Organizers are expecting a fun day. “It’s going to be a good day,” said Kloot.

Local MMA fighter looks to continue undefeated streak Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller’s local mixed martial arts star, Andrew Kloot, is getting ready for his next fight this weekend in Red Deer. On Friday, September 6, Kloot, who has gone undefeated in three fights, will face Liam McGowen, another undefeated fighter. McGowan has won his only two bouts. “I’ve definitely stepped up the competition for this one. I will be facing Liam “the Mac Truck” McGowan” who is also undefeated, so it should be a really tough fight,” said Kloot. Kloot has been building a reputation as a powerhouse in the ring. His last fight, on June 7 of this year, lasted a mere 38 seconds before Kloot won in a technical knockout. Kloot took a break after his last fight, but had no trouble getting back into training soon after. “Training for this fight has gone very well. I have been training hard and feel ready. I took a bit of time off after my last fight so it took a little while to get rid of the holiday weight but I managed and am in good shape,” said Kloot. McGowan’s last fight was on March 30 this year when he won in three rounds. Prior to that, he won his first fight on October 26, 2012, in the first ten seconds of round 1. Despite facing another undefeated fighter, Kloot is confident he’s ready. “Besides the usual nerves that inevitably come with a cage fight, I’m not worried. I’m confident in my training and feel like I’m at my best, but it’s a fight and anything can happen. As long as I fight hard and give it my best, I’ll be happy win or lose. There is no reason to be nervous,” said Kloot.
