Here is a nice sauce with an Asian flair. I appreciated a change of pace from the basic barbecue flavors this summer by using this in several dishes. It works well as a marinade besides as a sauce for meats. It is pronounced “kay-chap” which sounds similar to ketchup, so I referred to it as an Asian ketchup and used it accordingly! The recipe I used said it keeps on your pantry shelf for several months, but I refrigerated it just to be safe. If you like it as much as I do, you need not worry about how long it will keep! Once again, a good time was had by all.

Drumheller Town Council decided it was time to tear down the slide. It is expected to be down within the month. The Town will then look into replacing the slide with more resistant materials.

ing the corroding steel stairs that take riders to the top of the slide. “Just for the stairs it was $97,750. Platforms and landings weren’t even in that price. All together for the stairs and platforms it was around $125,000 in 2011,” said Kendrick. According to Palm Engineering, who were contracted to inspect the slide in August, a full rehabilitation of the slide would require the steel structure to be dismantled, replace all severely corroded components, sand blast and coat components, reassemble, and pour new concrete. The report concluded the cost of rehabilitation would exceed that of replacing the water slide and rehabilitation was not recommended. The Town will be looking to replace the slide with a new one with materials resistant to humidity. A new slide of equal or greater size would take until 2013 or 2014 to be realized. “We’re going to look for something in the interim. It won’t be as

grand as what we have now, but it would be something that could get us through the next two years,” said Mayor Terry Yemen. “It’s a pretty important part of the pool, so if there is something we can do, we’ll do it, but it’ll all boil down to cost.” Before a new slide is installed, there is one problem that must be tackled first. The high humidity of the building played a large role in corroding the old slide and creates nearly unbearable conditions for people during the height of summer. “The first thing we have to fix is the humidity. It affects all the equipment we put in there, but, more importantly, it’s about the staff who are required to work in there,” said Yemen. “The priority is the humidity. If we get that taken care of, the longevity of a new water slide is going to multiply.” It is hoped the water slide will be completely torn down by the end of September, while the Aquaplex is in its turnaround phase. w36eowm

Paul Armstrong “I would say it’s a cash grab. There needs to be more enforcement and less radar.”

I tried to play handyman last Sunday. My toilet has been running for about a week, and it’s bugged the heck out of me. So off I went to the plumbing department of the local hardware store. Not before checking out “toilet repair dot com” on the internet, however. It looked like an easy fix, probably just the flapper. I get to the store and pick up the parts that most resemble those I saw in my toilet tank. (My toilet is almost as old as I am, these parts may have been antique). I rush home and start to disassemble my toilet. (Yes I flushed, drained the tank, and turned off the water). First the plastic nut that is supposed to be “hand tightened only”. I don’t know whose hand tightened it, but I needed vice grips and a snipe to get it off. After finally getting it off, and replacing the filler valve, I followed all the steps, hand tightening the new nut. I then replaced the flapper ball. (No mean feat, but I’m not going to bore you with details). I stood back to look at my handiwork, and it was good. You see above, where I said that I turned off the water? Well, the main shut off valve to the water into my house is in the basement, and the toilet I’m working on is on the second floor. And of course when it was installed no one thought to install a shut off valve right there. So, I had to run all the way down two flights of stairs so that I might turn on the water and try a first flush. Running back up two flights of stairs, I was horrified to see water pouring onto the floor. I stood in panic for about two seconds, before realizing that I needed to run back down and shut off the water, pronto. I came back upstairs and looked in dread at my wet rug, and leaking toilet. I couldn’t turn on the water, and so went dry for the rest of the day. Monday morning I called a plumber, who advised me, after trying to fix things, that I was better off replacing the toilet. I took his advice. Apparently I cannot even meet the Red Green standard of “If you can’t be handsome, you should at least be handy”. I ran out of handsome some years back, and fixing a lousy toilet seems beyond my capabilities. What’s that leave me, “kinda plain looking, and keep your hands of the toolbox”? Some guys are handsome, some guys are handy, some guys are both, unfortunately, I’m neither. Oh well, I can still make my pen work

What superpower would you want? I would be able to transform into any animal I want. Any words of wisdom? Have respect for everyone.

• • • • • • Mayor Terry Yemen opened the meeting by proclaiming the week of September 10 to 16 as Terry Fox week. A letter expressing concern over the lack of public washrooms in East Coulee was presented at the meeting. CAO Ray Romanetz indicated options for public washrooms had been researched already and if the community can raise funds and find grants to pay for the washrooms, the Town would bring in a service connection to the location. • • • • • • Richard Kracher, general manager of Global Traffic Group, gave a presentation on automated traffic enforcement. Global Traffic Group provides services to 11 different community within Alberta. The Town could contract Global Traffic Group to provide equipment and services to run laser photo speed traps, red light enforcement, and potentially more. • • • • • • The Director of Infrastructure Services, Al Kendrick, gave a report on the condition of the water slide in the Drumheller Aquaplex. Palm Engineering inspected the slide and noted considerable rust and concrete deterioration in the support structure of the slide. Palm Engineering did not recommend rehabilitating the slide on the basis it would cost more money to repair the current slide than to build a brand new one. CAO Romanetz indicated the yearly repairs to the slide are only delaying the inevitable. A new slide could be made with materials that would not be affected by the high humidity of the Aquaplex. Romanetz suggested removing the current slide now, while the Aquaplex is not in use, working to reduce the humidity in the building, and then install a new slide. Council agreed and asked administration to begin demolishing the current water slide. • • • • • • Councillor Doug Stanford presented a report on the state of negotiations between the Badlands Ambulance Society (AHS) and Alberta Health Services. Stanford indicated communities in Alberta have been opting out of their respective ambulance societies in favour of services run by AHS in response to rising costs of running ambulance services. Council will return on Monday, September 10, to vote on whether or not to hand ambulance services over to AHS. Council asked residents to give their feedback. • • • • • • Councillor Andrew Berdahl informed those present of the upcoming Humane Society Caged for Kennels fundraiser on Wednesday, September 12. Councillor Berdahl also informed everyone that the Town's senior coordinator has moved to the Drumheller Public Library and the library board is thrilled with the integration.

Just passing through inSide Drumheller caught up with Dave McGrath as he was passing through the valley, staying with his sister before heading home to Cranbrook. He is doing it in style in his 1946 Ford two-door sedan. It took McGrath about two years to put together his ride, and it has been on the road

for about 15 years. While some may find it cringe-worthy to take a 66 year old car down the highway, this coupe does it in comfort, with a 1991 Mustang drive train and the front end out of a Mustang 2.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

What brings you to Drumheller? (Jamie) I wanted to spend some time with my boys, so we came to see the dinosaurs and maybe ďŹ nd some fossils. Hopefully it dries up! What have you seen so far? We went for a walk along the river, we went to the World’s Largest Dinosaur, to the park, and to the Tyrrell Museum. Did you guys have a favourite part in the museum? Damien really like the ocean part, where all the creatures are magniďŹ ed really big. Do you have a favourite dinosaur? (Damien) Stegosaurus and Triceratops. (Jamie) I think my favourite is Brachiosaurus.

Are there any stops after this? We’re thinking about going to the Calgary Zoo. What’s your favourite part about Drumheller? It has nice scenery and people, and it smells clean. There’s a coal plant in Estevan that makes things a little polluted smelling. Damien just loves exploring. Would you come back? Oh for sure. I’d even consider living here! If someone from Drumheller went to Estevan, what should they see? There’s Roche Peircy. It has little caves and rock formations. There are some nice lakes nearby to go swimming or ďŹ shing.

CLASSIFIEDS Town concerned about illegal dumping at recycling stations e

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Town of Drumheller has a new location for recycling facilities, and is hoping residents will do their part to make sure they remain neat and tidy. There is now a recycling box drop-off on Highway 9 on the former Hi-Ho Gas site. While there is no sign on the site asking residents to use best practices, they hope resident use common sense to recycle and not dump refuse. “For a town of 8,000 to have the recycling centre itself and then two recycle plants is really quite exceptional. But it

can be made to look a little ugly by a handful,” said Bob Cromwell of the Town of Drumheller. “We want to reinforce that we offer this, and it is not meant for dumping, it’s for recycling.“ The recycling depots; one on Highway 9 and one on Railway Avenue take cardboard, newsprint, bond paper, rigid and film plastic and food tins. Some items that are not recyclable at the site are styrofoam and glass. Automotive oil and neon light tubes are recyclable at the centre at the Drumheller and District Landfill. The town issued a release reminding residents to use the recycle

bins for recycling and not for dumping. It states illegal dumping carries a fine of at least

$500. Those witnessing a person illegally dumping can contact The Town of Drumheller’s Communi-

ty Enforcement department at 403-823-0094 or the Drumheller Landfill at 403-823-1345.

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. Dragons finish preseason 4-1 Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller The regular season begins tonight for the Drumheller Dragons and all the signs are pointing to a strong year for the club. The Dragons are 4-1 coming out of the preseason. Most recent on Wednesday night the Dragons took it to the Kindersley Klippers in front of a home town audience, and left with a 5-2 win. “It is an improvement over last year, so we like that,” said assistant coach Kurt Walsten. “Going into the exhibition series, if you said we would be 4-1 right now… we are happy with that.” The teams were tied after one, but in the second period the Dragons took a 3-2 lead. The Dragons put it out of reach with an early goal in the third, and then

to have its roster down to about 25 by then. The Dragons open the regular season tonight versus the Calgary Canucks at

The action starts Saturday as the Bantam Titans open their season at home. The Bantam Titans are on the gridiron at 3 p.m. this Saturday at DVSS field where they host Rocky Mountain House, a formidable opponent. “They went to the tier 3 final last year,” said head coach Paul Redmond. “They played on the other side of the draw…they finished in fourth or fifth. They had a pretty good team last year.” The Bantam Titans are no shrugs either. While they have lost a few players, they still have a strong core. “I didn’t lose too much,” said Redmond. “We have a couple big running backs, so I think we’ll do all right.” He adds, some of the new players are also strong and he will have a few Grade 7 players starting.

Giacomo Bertamini puts his heart and soul into whatever sport he participates. The Grade 11 student is a member of St. Anthony’s golf team and it should be a good year. He won this summer’s Junior Open at Dinosaur Trail Golf and $ountry Club as well.

an empty netter. They outshot the Clippers 41-27. While on paper this win looks impressive, Coach Walsten said they were out of sync a little bit and it wasn’t the team’s best performance. “The flow just wasn’t there tonight,” said Walsten, “but we’ll take the win.” He said the team’s best game so far was versus the Grizzlys last Monday night where they won 4-1. So far scoring doesn’t seem to be a problem as they lead their competition in goals 27-18. Their only lost was an 8-7 defeat on August 29 to the Calgary Canucks. “We scored a lot of goals in exhibition and that is all really positive,” he said. You can’t always count on preseason to be an accurate precursor of things to come for the season. Walsten explains they invited 90 players to camp and have taken a good look at them in the exhibition season. A number of their seasoned veterans were not in the line-up on Wednesday night’s game in order to be healthy for the season opener. The team hopes

The team is moving toward a strong season. They are back in the Central Alberta Football League and there is plenty of competition, with about a dozen teams. Redmond expects that because of their strong season last year, they will be matched up against tougher teams. “If we can get through this team (Rocky Mountain House) I think we’ll have a pretty good record. They set us up pretty tough this year, we have to play three of the top five teams from last year,” said Redmond. On September 15 the Titans are again at home to host Springbank, and on September 22 they travel to Red Deer to play Lindsey Thurber. While looking strong, their bench is a little shorter than coach Redmond would like it. Currently he has about 22 players, but would like to see about 30 dressed.
