The school year has begun! While visiting Mrs. Champigny's Grade 2 class at Greentree School, inSide Drumheller asked, “What is the best thing about being back in school?”
Tori James “To be with my friends and do science.”
The Morgan Jayne Project will have a special volunteer at this year’s Red Eye Memorial slow pitch tournament. Valerie Nelson, the woman who operates Familias Saludables in Roatan and administers the Morgan Jayne Project on the ground will be at the tournament. “I am very excited and we want to make sure she meets as many people as she can,” said Fred Makowecki, founder of the Morgan Jayne Project. “You have to understand we (in Drumheller) have done so much to help the people of Roatan, she wants to be able to talk and thank as many people as she can.” The Morgan Jayne Project turned five this summer. In that time, it has contributed to allowing children to live in the poverty-stricken country, by minimizing the spread of AIDS from mother to child through breast milk. “Last year there was zero mother-child transmission, that was us. Already 580 are registered, and more are expected for the second annual Dinosaur Half this Sunday. In its second year, the event is proving to be wildly successful locally, throughout Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan and even Nova Scotia. Organizers were busy this week marking the course and making last minute preparations. And while it might be last minute, there is still time to register for the races. Organizer Colin Kloot says registration will be taken Friday and Saturday at the Running Room in Calgary, and on Sunday morning at Midland Hall for the 5K, 10K or half marathon. Racers who are already registered can pick up their bibs and packages at the Sports Room Source for Sports on Friday and Saturday, or at Midland Hall on Sunday morning. Gear check for the half marathon takes place at 7 a.m., and 8 a.m. for the shorter distances. The half marathon starts at 9 a.m. at the Little Church. However, for those walking, or who anticipate
taking longer than 3.5 hours to finish the course, there is an 8 a.m. start. The 5K and 10K runs start at 9:30 a.m. at the Royal Tyrrell Museum. All races conclude at the museum where there will be race day festivities and exhibits. Because of the overwhelming response to the event, organizers have made some logistical arrangements to make the day run smoothly. With the possibility of nearly 600 competitors, there is simply not enough parking to accommodate all at the Tyrrell Museum. Organizers ask racers to car pool if possible. There will also be parking at the Midland Community Hall, and three shuttle buses have been arranged to transport runners to the race. The 10K race will also come through the community of Midland. There is a turnaround point on the west side of Midland Hall. Because the community of Midland will be a busy place race day, Kloot would like to thank residents in advance for their patience during the event and understands that parking may be heavy and could inconvenience residents.

the former Central School. She is also planning presentations for the Rotary Club and students at St. Anthony’s School. Despite the efforts of the community however, Makowecki says the global economic situation is making it tough on the program. “Last month her family went without power so there was formula in the shelter for the babies,” said Makowecki. “You pat yourself on the shoulders and dust yourself off and think you are all done, but it never ends.” He said the BACtoBAC program has helped the program with a steady stream of income, and Drumheller residents remain committed. This year’s Red Eye Memorial Tournament is on the weekend of September 9-11. This tournament splits the funds raised between the Morgan Jayne Project and the Chris Bolin Memorial Fund. Makowecki said they are still looking for volunteers for the event to staff the concession at the tournament. He says to stop by Image Crafters to volunteer. He also has posted a schedule on his Facebook page.

Community Facility moving along Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller Drumheller’s new community facility is moving along, still aiming for a November 15 opening. The multi-use complex is almost totally closed in and the glass has been installed. Inside, the welding on the running track continues, as well as hvac ductwork and spray on insulation work. Brickwork and installation of washrooms and showers in the change rooms for the fieldhouse is also underway. As well, the public can now have a look at what the exterior covering of the building will look like as workers are installing the exterior covering.
The cladding is a fire resistant material and can be seen in various shades of gray from the eastern side of the building where workers have begun the work. The colour selection was chosen over a tan color in a vote held by facility committees, as well as a website survey held earlier this year. Lorne Peters, site superintendent for general contractor Dawson Wallace Construction of Calgary, told inSide Drumheller that over 80 sub-trades, both large and small, are involved in the project. “We (Dawson Wallace) have had excellent co-operation from local suppliers who are working with us as a team”, Mr. Peters said.
This was borne out by Rod Knelsen from LPR Concrete of Drumheller. Mr. Knelsen told inSide Drumheller earlier that working with Dawson Wallace was a good experience and they are a good company to work with on the project. Occupancy by mid-November is still the target, but not all areas of the complex will be fully functional at that time. Two key staff members involved in the operation of the complex are working to ensure programs and functions are in place by opening. Guy Latour has been hired as the business manager, and Heather Little will be heading up the marketing and events for the facility.
Town of Drumheller CAO Ray Romanetz congratulates Guy Latour as the new Business Manager for the Badlands Community Facility. “I’m enjoying the position very much. It's very challenging, lots to do and very exciting,” said Latour. inSide photo by Lori Coultes

Stepping in the door at the Drumheller Outreach School, located on Centre Street, you’ll find books and students. The school, operated by Golden Hills School Division, offers alternative education for adults and students to upgrade or obtain credits to further their education. The Outreach School provides a place, not only for education, but for support and individual guidance to help students achieve their goals. The school offers interaction with other students with similar life experiences. When a student first arrives to the centre, the first
process is an individual assessment with a teacher to find out what the needs and goals of the student are in order to achieve success through the centre. “Fostering a life plan, it's not just about high school education, but life skills as well,” said Jen Paulger, a teacher for the Outreach School. The benefit for students enrolled in the program is the personal academic education that allows the student to work at their own pace with flexible hours. Paulger told inSide Drumheller, “Some students will come to school in the morning at 8 a.m. till lunch then work in the afternoon.” In some cases work experience maybe be considered

Ridin’ dirty
Dino hunter rewarded The Weekender’s annual “Great Drumheller Dinosaur Challenge” was a little tougher this year, as nearly every week one of the downtown dinosaur statues were repainted by volunteers. Despite this, inSide Drumheller received hundreds of entries. But there could only be one winner: (l-r) Wendy Braun of inSide Drumheller presented Jolene and Bradyn Crone with a $100 gift certificate. They selected the Sports Room Source for Sports for their prize. weekender photo by Patrick Kolafa
This week's inSide Ride is a 2002 Jaguar X Type. This compact executive car was recently picked up by the Drumheller RCMP on Highway 9. While a Jaguar is a pricey set of wheels, it doesn’t compare to the cargo found within (inset). Along with car, the police also seized 15 pounds of marijuana. Kyle McLoughlin, 23, of Calgary, has
been charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime, and Amber Larocke, 19, of Calgary, has been charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of marijuana. Depending on the outcome in the courts, the Jaguar will either be returned or forfeited to the Crown for disposal. weekender photo by Patrick Kolafa

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves
in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Sudoku
Crossword
Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Ever wish you spoke another language, and I don’t mean French? I am beginning to wish that I could understand another language, preferably the same one used by all those people who call as telemarketers, or the ones who are going to ďŹ x the virus in my computer. I don’t know what language it is exactly, but I do know that it ain’t English. “Hello, is this Mr. Atesso, okay?â€? (The sentence always ends in okay.) “No, it isn’t, but what can I do for you anyway?â€? “Okay, Mr. Atesso, your computer has a virus that can harm the computer, okay... Okay open your computer and turn it on, okay.â€? “My name is Aiello, and who did you say you were?â€? “I’m from the computer technology company, okay... Is your computer open and turned on okay.â€? “And you say my computer has a virus... You’re going to remove the virus, is that right?â€? “Okay, turn on your computer, okay. Now press the Windows button and the “Râ€? button at the same time okay.â€? “Okay, I did that.â€? “Now what was supposed to happen?â€? “On the left hand side of the screen you see ‘My Computer’, go to that. Okay.â€? "Wait a minute... I pressed ‘Windows’ and ‘R’ at the same time and nothing happened. What was supposed to happen?â€? “Okay, on the left hand side of the screen, do you see ‘My Computer,’ okay?" “Yes.â€? “Go to ‘My Computer’ and press ‘Enter’, okay.â€? “Oh there it is. It says something about privacy.â€? “Okay, go to the bottom and press ‘Run’, okay.â€? “Wait a minute, I’d like to read what this says about privacy, and security.â€? “Okay, don’t read it, just go down and enter ‘Run’.â€? “No, I think it’s important to read this.â€? “Okay, no, don’t read anything, okay, it’s not important, just press ‘Run’" (He’s beginning to sound agitated.) “Listen pal, it says this is important, so I’m going to read it.â€? “Okay sir, you are just wasting my time.â€? Click. The guy actually hung up on me. I phoned my sister and told her what had happened. Turns out the guy is a scam artist. If he’s going to pull that kind of a scam, especially over the phone, he ought to learn the language, okay, and maybe be a little more polite. Who knows he might have gotten all the information he needed to steal my identity, my bank balance. (Neither of which are worth that much.) 36m

Horoscopes ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, if romance hasn't been on your mind, it's time to make it a priority. Do what you have to do -- wine, dine and pull out all the romantic punches.
LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, just because something costs more doesn't mean it is necessarily better. You will learn this on Friday with your next purchase as you do your research.
TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Another person's misdeeds will shed some light on your own, Taurus. Recognize your mistakes and work to correct them as soon as possible.
SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Find a way to reduce the stress in your life, Scorpio. This way you can enjoy family and friends without a lot of things on your mind at any given time.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you will need an abundance of patience if you are to make it through the next few days. Thursday proves especially challenging when a curveball gets thrown your way.
SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, don't make too much of a situation because you're reading into it the wrong way. The truth is much less than you are making things. Excitement awaits you.
CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Manipulate a difficult situation to your advantage, Cancer. You already have a way with people, now you just have to get them on board with your idea.
CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, if you don't take a breather now and then you will be left with little energy. Take advantage of invitations by friends to hang out and enjoy some downtime.
LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, after a few bumps along the road, things will even out to a steady pace for you. That's a good thing because now you'll be able to step back and review your actions.
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you may feel like you're taking two steps back every day, but the truth is you're making progress just in small doses. Stick with what you're doing.
VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, someone else's needs will take priority over your own this week. That could put a crimp in your plans. Find out if you will need help to get through the days.
PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, few things are more exciting than being surprised by someone you love and respect. That is just what may happen to you.

Running changes family’s life Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller They say every journey begins with a single step. For Karen Andrew, each step became faster and faster, and this weekend she will be running in the 10K race at the Dinosaur Half. In fact, it has become a family aair. Her daughter Chelsea Andrew Latvala will be running with her and, if her husband Mark is not harvesting he’ll be running alongside too. “It kind of gets in your blood,â€? said Karen. Karen’s journey began in about 2003 when she took up running. Earlier, she had been diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis to the point she couldn’t get out of bed. Her daughter completed the Dublin Marathon for Joints in Motion, in support of her mother and an uncle with arthritis. “My husband and I went as part of the cheer team‌ it was an
amazing thing to see,â€? said Karen. Mark began running right away. When Karen began to effectively manage her arthritis with medication, she too began to run. With running you start slowly, and that is what Karen did. She kept at it. Along the way, she shed 90 pounds. Her running and lifestyle change has also helped with her arthritis. “When I see the rheumatologist, he says just keep on moving, which is easy to do when you are feeling well. It is not so easy when you can’t put your own clothes on,â€? she said. She began to compete in runs upwards of 10K, and then last year she completed her longest race yet, the Dinosaur Half. “That was my very proudest moment, I have to say that,â€? said Karen. She was cheered along by family, who didn’t just watch her pass, but drove out in the ďŹ elds and by
the airport to support her on her journey. Her husband Mark did not run in the half last year because of an injury that required a pin being placed in his leg. He has since worked his way back into running shape. She truly feels running has changed her family’s life. “I feel like a whole dierent person, and if we hadn’t had gone to Dublin with our daughter and had that whole beautiful experience, neither one of us would be running,â€? she said. “I thought when we went there all of these people would be really ďŹ t, but there were fat people, old people, skinny people, poor people, rich people, and you don’t expect to see that. I think then you realize that you can do it.â€? Her journey continues this Sunday at the Dinosaur Half. “I really think running has changed our lives because you get it in your blood and you just can’t let it go.â€?
