A strange occurrence began this spring in the yard of Jeannette Kostynuk on Riverside Drive. In early June a plastic mother duck showed up on her lawn looking disheveled. Soon after her arrival, little yellow feathered friends began to appear over the next few days and the flock grew to seven. They lived here the whole summer, and lo and behold, a daddy duck flew in to gather the flock just days ago, as fall approaches. Kostynuk is now wondering if anyone is missing their ornamental ducks. photo submitted

During the late evening of September 8, a double motor vehicle collision resulted in two fatalities. Colleen Rauch, 59, of Delia, was returning to her residence eastbound on Highway 9. Her 1992 Ford van collided with Jocelyn Manchur’s 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix which was travelling westbound when it crossed the centerline, resulting in a head-on collision near Range Road 19-1. Rauch’s vehicle entered the south ditch and started on fire. Both drivers died as a result of their injuries at the scene. Subsequent investigation has indicated that Manchur had consumed alcohol prior to the collision. Manchur, 21, resides in Hanna. The Alberta Medical Examiners Office will continue with the investigation.

Outreach’s hours cut to halftime Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller’s Outreach School has received a cut to their hours and now their office in the downtown will be open halftime. Outreach, which offers programs to students through correspondence and on their own schedule, will be open 12-4 p.m. weekdays this year. Golden Hills School Division Superintendant Dianne McBeth said enrollment was down and budget funding was redirected. Outreach, which services about 20-30 students dayto-day but has between 100150 registered, offers courses to students who have had trouble in standard schools. It allows those who aren’t as efficient in the classroom to take the courses they need to graduate on their

own time. Attendance everyday isn’t required. “The Outreach building just offers students a place to work,” says McBeth. Although down to halftime, students take their courses through the internet most often and can access work at anytime. “We’re putting the priority where we have kids to serve.” “We will be able to serve most kids adequately,” says Andrew Berdahl, Outreach’s teacher-in-charge. “The essence of the program hasn’t changed, it just makes some added features difficult,” Berdahl said. The Outreach often hosts guest speakers and presentations, and with only afternoon hours, it may be difficult to schedule in the same features they boasted in past years.

Before serving, whip the cream and sugar. Add vanilla. Remove the plate and plastic. Set the dish in an inch of warm water to loosen. I wonder how many people are missing the carefree days of summer already? Here is a recipe to put you back into that summertime mood. When I first made this, I thought it was half pie and half cake. It looks like a slice of pie when you serve it, but the “crust” is actually bread. When I described this amazing fake pie to a friend she said, “that sounds like summer pudding!” Having British roots, she knew what she was talking about as this is where summer pudding originates. I looked online and found several varieties using strawberries, currants, pretty much any type of berry. I didn’t realize it was so pretty to serve right after being inverted from the bowl. I think that is the proper way to present it. I cut it to look like pie rather than the “pudding” it really is. So my photo was taken once I’d cut the pieces to serve. You will have to make it yourself to see just how it looks whole! Very simple to make with few ingredients, and great to have prepared a day ahead! Blackberry Summer Pudding 3 cups blackberries 3/4 cup sugar 2 Tbsp honey or agave syrup 2 tsp grated lemon zest 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 1 loaf white sandwich bread 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup heavy cream 2 Tbsp icing sugar

Institution staff seize contraband

Area sisters take on legendary Mantracker

Drumheller Institution staff, on a regular security patrol, found a cache of contraband in the yard that appears to have been thrown over the fence. It has an estimated institutional value of $80,000 to $100,000. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Staff at the Drumheller Institution have recovered a number of contraband items, which appear to have been thrown over the fence in an attempt to smuggle them into the institution. On Monday, September 6, during a regular security patrol of the institution site, staff uncovered a number of contraband items including cell phones, illegal drugs, and tobacco. The institution value of the seizure has been estimated between $80,000 and $100,000. John Shannon of the Drumheller Institution says this mode of smuggling has been around for a long time, and often occurred around the Stony Mountain Institution near Winnipeg. “It just took a while to catch on here,” said Shannon. There have been two or three of these types of smuggling attempts in the last year. The Mail reported in its May 19 edition of the arrest a man who was alleged to have been caught attempting to toss a package over the fence. “The nice thing is the staff are out there doing their rounds and they found it like they are supposed to before it gets in to the inmates,” said Shannon, adding there are no suspects in the incident. “Unless you actually catch someone doing it, or if someone sees someone, it is very difficult to prove who did it,” he said.

“It was frightening,” says Thompson sister Amy. Few have had the misfortune of Mantracker Terry Grant and his stead breathing down their neck while escaping from the pursuit of the legendary tracker in the rugged Canadian wilderness. Amy, of Three Hills, and Barb Thompson-Butler of Airdrie, were chosen to be prey of the Mantracker last July, on the OLN television show Mantracker. “I was sick with anxiety,” says Barb, 33. “It was the most intense, most stressful thing I have ever done.” The two sisters, with family ties to Drumheller - their grandma Ellen Hoy living at Sunshine Lodge and have family in Michichi, will have their struggle with the hunter air on the network on Saturday, September 25, in the show's fifth season run. Having submitted their audition video in January of last year, the sisters were chosen for their wilderness experience to try and outrun Mantracker. Although sworn to secrecy about who won, the sisters say

they gave the Mantracker a run for his money. “It was a great experience,” said Amy, 39, “He’s a really good guy.” Produced by Bonterra Productions, the program features Terry Grant, an expert tracker called “Mantracker”, who pursues two individuals frequently in the remote Canadian wilderness. Each episode features a twoperson team, referred to as the “prey”, who usually (but not always) have a pre-existing relationship; the participants have varying wilderness survival skills and physical fitness levels. The “prey”, as they are referred to in the show, usually have a two-kilometre head start, although in more rugged terrain, that distance may be greater. They must reach a goal destination (often located over 40 kilometres away) within 36 hours, equipped with a map and compass for navigation. The pursuit starts with a flare gun shot into the air to mark the prey’s starting point. The trackers, Mantracker partners with another tracker with area experience, ride to where they believe the Prey

began and attempt to determine which direction they are headed. Usually the race includes camping overnight, but there is no pre-set stopping point on day one or starting time on day two. The prey travel through varied terrain, often going off-trail and bushwhacking through dense brush, climbing hills, traversing rocky ground, and even crossing rivers and lakes to escape Mantracker. Although they travel on foot, they can use other transportation modes: for example, one team hitchhiked a ride for a short distance, and another used rock climbing gear to scale down a steep cliff. The race ends when the Prey successfully arrives at the finish line or if Mantracker or the guide captures them. The trackers do not have to physically catch the Prey, but rider and horse must get close enough to physically block their path. If one Prey is caught, the remaining one can continue on alone. Grant is a 25-year-veteran of the Alberta Foothills Search and Rescue Team, and an expert in utilizing clues such as footprints, probable path, and other signs of human presence to track prey. For those who cast suspicion of the show being fake, Amy said it is all too real. Although some dramatic shots are reshot after the race, the footage is of the actual hunt. To throw off the Mantracker, sometimes decoy camera crews are sent out, and the crews themselves are wilderness experts who take precautions to cover their tracks. The sisters are also known from the family singing trio, Precious Cargo.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our inSide Rides feature. Expect to see this popular feature return in next year's guide to Summer fun; inSide Drumheller's WEEKENDER!! Power to the Acadians This week marks the end of inSide Rides for this season and we end with more than a car, but a family affair. The ride is Luigi Vescarelli’s 1966 Acadian, a re-trimmed Chevy II for the Canadian market, set apart distinctly by the three maple leaves running down the centre of the grill. Luigi, with the help of local tradesmen have restored the car back to its original blue colour. Gone is the original in-line six and three speed manual transmission, replaced by an aggressively cammed 283 V8 and an automatic Turbo 350 transmission. Chris Morgan and Shane Goodie helped Vescarelli along with the restore. Peterson Auto Body painted the car and Aagaard’s Upholstery furnished the upholstery. Luigi’s uncle purchased the Acadian new in 1966. Luigi bought it when his uncle returned to Italy in 1986. He used the car as a daily driver with an eye to restoring it, but eventually sold it to Gene Cunningham in Standard. The car never left his mind and in 2003, he bought it back, however this time it had the new power plant. Over the next four years, he toiled away in his garage restoring the car to its present form. He’s had it appraised and knows he could have bought one for less than it cost to restore it, “but it wouldn’t be my uncle’s car.” Weekender photo by Patrick Kolafa

Miss Helen (Judith Buchan) lives alone and has transformed her home into a work of art by creating a myriad of cement ďŹ gures outside the house and decorating the inside with dozens of candles and mirrors. She has created her own “Meccaâ€? of beauty and freedom. A young friend, Elsa (Alysa van Haastert), drives from Cape Town to make a surprise visit on the same day the local pastor, Marius Byleveld (Steve Waldschmidt), comes to Miss Helen’s house to help with her application for a bed at the local Old Folks’ Home. Judith Buchan is the 2010 Harvey Artist in Residence at Rosebud. Judith plays Miss Helen in The Road to Mecca. Judith has been in this play previously as Elsa at Live Arts Theatre in Calgary. A few years earlier, as a company member of PaciďŹ c Theatre in Vancouver, Judith played Sally in Talley’s Folly with Morris Ertman directing. So her return to Rosebud might be considered a bit of a “homecomingâ€?. A graduate of the University of Alberta, B.F.A. Acting Program, Judith has performed in many theatres across western Canada. For the past 12 years, she has lived in Lethbridge where one of her favourite roles was Countess Malcolm in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music with the Lethbridge Symphony. She commutes regularly to Calgary to work in the ďŹ lm industry and has played more than 20 lead or principal roles in both ďŹ lm and television. Most recently, you may have seen Judith on TV in Heartland and on the big screen in Passchendaele. In 2007, Judith received a Movieguide nomination for Best Actress in TV for Lost Holiday. The Road to Mecca opens tonight (Friday, September 10) at the Rosebud Theatre, telling a story of an lonely woman who turns her home into a work of art.

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The Bantam Titans have come out of the gate swinging with a strong line-up and potential for a strong season. The team played its first game of the season on Saturday, September 4 in Red Deer versus Huntington Hills. While they were on the losing end of a high scoring 44-32 battle there were some bright spots, especially against what could be one of the strongest teams in the league. “It is shaping up like it is going to be a really good year,” said coach Paul Redmond. Grade 9 running back Spencer Fournier led the

team with four touchdowns, in his first year as a Titan. Tanner Hedstrom also scored for the Titans. The league plays with a two point convert rule, and the Titans only converted on one of their tries. This will be a focus in practice. On the defensive end, Redmond was impressed with the team as they were able to shut down Huntington Hills’ running game. The Red Deer team’s passing game was strong however. Redmond says they are bolstered by nine returning Grade 9 players and a little more size than in previous years. “We are able to put the proper talent in the right spaces. The Bantam Titans have a bye this weekend; however will be on their home field at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Despite a losing effort the Bantam Titans scored five touchdowns verSeptember 18 to take on sus a strong Huntington Hills team from Red Deer last Saturday.
