The Drumheller Titans returned Sunday from a tournament in San Diego where they represented the town and Canada in a football tournament. Above, the team enters the stadium to face Calipatria High School on Saturday, August 25. The trip was not all about football however, as the team was able to ham it up for the camera at SeaWorld, upper right, and catch some rays at the beach, left.

With the Drumheller municipal election coming up, inSide Drumheller asks, “What qualities do you look for in a politician?”

Candidates prepare for election Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

While Nomination Day is not until September 20, candidates have begun to line up for the upcoming municipal election. Already it appears if all the potential candidates put their name on the dotted line, no office in Drumheller will be filled by acclimation, as there are so far two mayoralty candidates announced and eight vying for six seats on council. This week Mike Hansen also told inSide Drumheller

cana for over 21 years. The last seven he has worked as a consultant for Encana. He simply feels things could be done better. He is not one to shy away from giving his opinion, and says he would bring a more thoughtful, methodical voice to the table. He chuckles that meetings would be longer, but the decisions made would have more consideration and discussion, rather than council acting as a rubber stamp. “You can’t take things lightly,” he said. He would like to see Drumheller guide itself towards more growth, and part of that is fostering a strong working relationship with the provincial government. Nominations will be accepted at Town Hall on Monday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Nomination papers and a candidate’s package are available at www.dinosaurvalley.com or at Town Hall.

Town addresses murky water issues Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

The cause of water clarity in different parts of town over the past few weeks is undetermined but under investigation, says the town’s infrastructure services director. Recently, some Drumheller residents have experienced discolored water in their homes and businesses. “We’re not 100 per cent sure what’s causing it, three things are possible,” said Al Kendrick, Infrastructure Services Director. Water temperature, flow rates, and construction near the Memorial Arena are contributing factors to the colour issue. Higher temperature in summer accelerates the chemical absorption of any buildup on the interior of pipes. “We can’t physically look inside the pipes, but we are looking at the possibility of using cameras and other things,” said Kendrick. Regular bacteriological testing has confirmed the water is safe and meets Canadian drinking water quality guidelines. “It’s not anywhere near what happened in 2007,” said Kendrick, referring to the boil water order caused by problems at the Drumheller water treatment facility. The water problems in Drumheller are sporadic and town staff are dealing with

each affected customer. The town has set up plans for short, medium, and long term solutions for minimizing distribution system issues. In the short term, the town will isolate and flush the main line from the treatment plant to the Highway 9/56 intersection. This will occur in the early morning of Tuesday, September 7. A unidirectional flush program will run through September while water temperatures are still warm. Medium term plans include a visual inspection to view the interior of the pipes, further maintenance activities including the clearwell and internal plumbing of the plant, and investigating various physical and chemical pipe cleaning processes. Down the road, the town hopes to develop a physical pipe cleaning program to supplement the flushing, continue using unidirectional flushing, and continue the existing cast iron replacement program. “It is very important that the water delivered to our residents' taps is the best quality possible,” said Mayor Bryce Nimmo. “The Town of Drumheller is working on a more robust pipe cleaning program to minimize any water quality issues.” Drumheller residents and businesses have experienced sporadic disThose experiencing water quality issues colouration in their water over the last few weeks, the cause of which and requiring information may call Infra- is still under investigation. inSide photo by Kyle Smylie structure Services at 403-823-1330.

In late August, a man managed to talk his way into the Lodge at 250 2nd Street West. He gained access to a suite through an unlocked door. The resident entered the home, saw the man, and asked him to leave. After he was gone, the resident discovered they were missing cash, debit and credit cards, cheques and birth certificate. The culprit was reported to have left the scene on an old bicycle. Savary fishing derby casting off next week Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

QUOTE

The 16th annual Ryan Savary Memorial Fishing Derby will be casting off at Michichi Reservoir next weekend. “Ryan would have liked to see people out, he and Greg (St. Laurent, friend) went every moment they had.” Katrine Stone

Many of the youngsters at 2009’s Ryan Savary Memorial Fishing Derby went home with prizes, including (l-r) Devon Landon, Kearra Landon, Tracker Robinson and Cadence Landon. This year, the event is set on Saturday, September 11 at the Michichi Reservoir with anglers casting off as early as 6:00 a.m.

On Saturday, September 11, anglers will meet as early as 6:00 a.m. to see who can snag the biggest bite, in honour of avid angler Ryan Savary. “Ryan would have liked to see people out, he and Greg (St. Laurent, friend) went every moment they had,” says Ryan’s sister Katrine Stone. Last year’s derby was dealt uncooperative

weather, but organizers hope things will change for next Saturday’s event. In 2009, angler Adam McCann took the top spot with his catch of 3 pounds, 12.6 ounces. He claimed the $300 cash prize. In fact, this catch vaults him into the history books of the Ryan Savary Derby with the most catches of any participant. Bill Lapham placed second with a 1 pound, 14.6 ounce catch edging out third place Ron Jacobson by just 0.4 ounces. Blaine Zacharuk won fourth place and a Shimano graphite rod. Cash prizes are reaching the $650 mark, with many other fishing related prizes to be won. All proceeds will be donated to the Drumheller Salvation Army, with the

Floods in Pakistan; A new antibiotic resistant superbug ready to sweep the world; Arctic ice cap melting faster than expected; Black bears found guarding a B.C. grow-op; Enbridge pipeline spill may cost 400 million dollars; Adolescent cougar sends kids and adults running; Smoke from B.C. fires creates hazy summer daze; Jet pilot ready to fly again; Cruise ships make Canadian west coast waters toilet bowl of North America; Boatload of Tamil refugees puts strain on system; What’s wrong with the Edmonton Eskimos?; Michael Buble rocks the Dome. The foregoing are all headlines or taken from headlines in recent papers. Have you read the stories behind any of them, or do any of them grab your attention? I have, and most of them do, grab my attention, that is. The new bug ready to sweep the world, for instance. If it generates as much hype as the last bug that was to sweep the world, the H1N1 or swine flu virus, leaving millions dead in its wake, then we should all be in great fear, and making sure all our affairs are in order. If, on the other hand, it meets the hype to the same degree as H1N1 did, then rational action should prevail. I’ve already covered my thoughts on boatloads of immigrant refugees hitting our shores without notice or permission - I don’t like it. There is one up there that I believe David Suzuki and friends could address. They all make a big fuss about the oil sands and their effect on the environment, water, land and air. I think everybody is pretty much aware of the fact that strip mining is not pretty, and that oil extraction from sand and tar is energy intensive. Most of us know these things, have for years, but how many of us are aware of the luxury liners sailing up the west coast to Canadian waters just so they can dump tens of thousands of gallons (not litres) of waste water and sewage? I didn’t know of it, did you? If Suzuki knew, he wasn’t saying anything. He has a residence on the coast and constantly rails against the oil industry and its contribution to global warming. I wonder if he could tell us to what degree all that sewage and waste water warm our coastal waters. This is something that can and should be stopped. Global warming on the other hand... Come on, David, put your foundations money where it can actually make a change. You do, and many people may not cringe so much when your name is mentioned. This one is for me. ‘What is wrong with the Edmonton Eskimos?’ This is my team, a team I have supported for 40 years. A record of 6 losses and 1 win is not the Edmonton Eskimos. I don’t know who these guys are, but they’re not Edmonton Eskimos. I long for the days of Tom Wilkinson and Warren Moon; of Dave Fennell and Dan Kepley; of Brian Kelly and Larry Highbaugh. They gush over the “unflappable” Ricky Ray. I wish that once, just once, this guy would get flappable. He puts up huge yardage, none of which, unfortunately, lands in the end zone. It doesn’t bother Ricky. Ricky, please come unglued, show a little fire, some madness, fury, I don’t care, whatever it takes! Here’s one that’s just plain old silly. It’s in regard to the purchase of new fighters for air defence. The opposition parties say Canadians are being frightened into believing there is a need for the new F-35. The New Democrat defence critic said, “This is all foolishness.” The Liberal defence critic said, “This is all politics.” Right, and if a+b=c and c=d+b, then d=a, blah blah blah, and politics equals foolishness. 35l

Drumheller will be geeking out on the Napier Theatre’s 35-foot screen this Labour Day holiday, and they need more players to join in the Rockband 2 tournament. Reality Bytes owner and Geek Out organizer John Shoff said as of Wednesday, only a handful of teams were registered. Players are being enticed with different games; they will have an Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii running on the movie screen at the theatre. “We’re looking to at least double the people registered,” said Shoff, but they do have enough people to get some virtual guitar licks going. If registration doesn’t pick up, there will be a video game free-for-all of different games for people to compete at. Shoff wants to let people know, if anyone doesn’t have a team they can register at www.realitybytesinc. com or by calling 403-8232983 to have a team put together for them. The event is free and will start at 12:30 p.m. Monday, September 6.

He bought this 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo new from Western Chev, and it was the second of its kind to roll off the lot. He purchased it for $5,457, and Bill Bachynski was the salesman. It came with the high performance option featuring a 350 CID Chevrolet Turbo-Fire V8. The car was well
