inSideOPINIONS Hope College health school hops another hurdle

inSide Drumheller | inSideDrumheller.com

Kyle Smylie| inSide Drumheller

After a year of work towards creating a post-secondary college in Drumheller, Hope College has now been officially registered as a not-for-profit institution. With this hurdle passed, Hope College will also be submitting a proposal to the Rural Alberta Development Fund before March 17, with a response expected within a month saying if they are accepted. “If that proposal is found to be favourable, then we’ll be a reality,” said Dr. Jon Ohlhauser, project manager for the college. “We’re very confident we’ll find favour for the final funding.” Hope College will be a health field focused school – plans now involve three different start-up diploma courses: licensed practical nursing, physical therapy assistant, and business administration. Plans are to build programs to the degree level, once stu-

dent numbers grow over the first five years of the institute’s life. Dr. Ohlhauser said they plan to add three programs per year for the first five years Hope College is operating. “We will ask what the best opportunities to teach in Drumheller are, as far as practicum placements, and what job placements are available in town and in surrounding rural communities,” Dr. Ohlhauser said. “After that, we hope to see programs in the areas of environmental studies, environmental technologies, deeper into the business areas, and perhaps communications,” he said. “But that is far down the road.” In aim of becoming a “destination college”, Hope College’s programs will entice students to travel across the province – bringing money and a new workforce. Projections indicate in their tenth year of operation, the school will have between 800-900 students, Dr.

Ohlhauser said. “It would be a tremendous shot in the arm for the economy and in terms of events in the community,” he said. The opening of Hope College is planned for the fall of 2012, Dr. Ohlhauser said, after plans to begin in fall 2011 were delayed because their Alberta Rural Development Fund application was denied this autumn. Currently, the college is eyeing two locations: the old hospital on Riverside Drive and St. Anthony’s once they move to their new school on North Dinosaur Trail. Residences for out-of-town students will be provided. Dr. Ohlhauser says interest from the Drumheller Health Centre has been received, adding that Drumheller is one of few communities in Alberta without a resident college. “They’ve expressed interest in working with students located at a college within the community – it allows them to

integrate more into the community when they live there.” “Drumheller has seen the development of post-secondary education as a key economic development piece,” says Dr. Ohlhauser. “If we can get a college residence in our community, that would allow so many more additional economic pieces to move forward. “It’s not something that develops in isolation and has no impact on the community,” he said. As part of the proposal, Hope College wishes to provide response from the community regarding the school. Public functions will be held soon to communicate with residents. Dates have not yet been set. “With this approval, our spirits have been encouraged and we wish to pass on support from the community to the (Alberta Rural Development Fund)," said Dr. Ohlhauser.

Tourism Master Plan nears completion Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

“I’d have to pick Packers, or I would get in trouble.”

Residents will have a chance this Tuesday to have a look and offer input into the Town of Drumheller’s Tourism Master Plan.

Since June of last year, a stakeholders committee has been working with consultants Malone Given Parsons to develop the Master Plan. As tourism remains a strong economic driver for Drum-

heller, the plan is intended to provide a community strategic action plan with attainable objectives. It looks at current tourism infrastructure and the economic realities of the valley,

John Shoff

examines trends and creates a working plan to achieve goals for the industry. Some of the areas it focuses on are transportation, policy, marketing, and product/business development and downtown revitalization. Part of the plan is to look at the possibilities of the Badlands Community Facility in regards to the tourism industry. A stakeholders meeting was held in September of last year, and economic development officer Ray Telford says the plan is nearly complete. “We are now looking for public input and conversation,” says Telford. The town will be presenting the Tourism Master Plan on Tuesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. at the Ramada Inn.

Man pleads guilty to possession for the purposes of trafficking Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller man has been sentenced to 30 days for possession of marijuana for the purposes of trafficking. Corey David Clark pleaded guilty to the charge in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, January 21. In August of last year, RCMP, acting on information received that there was marijuana being sold out of garage in the Huntington area of Drumheller, set up surveillance of the home. Police observed an individual exiting the property and found drugs on the person.

The RCMP obtained a search warrant and entered the property. In Clark’s truck they found 2-3.5 gram bags of marijuana. A further search of the garage uncovered another larger stash of marijuana, as well as paraphernalia including a grinder, scale and rolling papers. The total amount of marijuana seized was 139.6 grams, with an estimated street value, depending on how it is sold, of $700-$1,400. In light of a presentence report Federal Prosecutor Bill Herman asked for a short sharp sentence, saying that Clark did not accept the risks his actions have to his family

nor acknowledge the effect on the lives of other people who use the drugs. Defense for Clark, Gary Wood said Clark was not a dealer, but foolishly was holding the drugs for another individual. Herman countered by saying drug trafficking was observed at the home and Clark was the only person with access to a stash locked in a drawer. Judge L. Grieve sentenced Clark to 30 days in custody followed by a year of probation, with the conditions to keep the peace and to attend counselling.

RCMP make second drug bust in one week on Wednesday, January 26 Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller RCMP made their second drug bust in one week, searching a Drumheller residence to find a small amount of marijuana and pills believed to be Dilaudid on Wednesday. On Wednesday, January 26, a drug related search warrant was executed on a residence at 160 1st Street West in Drumheller. “There’s always constant pressure to get drugs off the street,” says Corporal Mike

Black, after saying RCMP don’t believe this seizure is related to the one made Monday, where $4,500 worth of marijuana, cocaine, hydromorphone and an undetermined substance were found in a Drumheller residence. Andrew Edwards, 29, has been charged with nine violations including seven breeches of previously issued court and probation orders, as well as being in possession of the previously mentioned drugs. Edwards appeared in court

Friday morning. RCMP say investigations associated with the residence, occupants and visitors is ongoing. Further arrests are anticipated, said police. “There are always drugs in town, and we encourage people to call us or Crime Stoppers with any information,” said Black. Dilaudid is a trade name for hydromorphone, the same drug seized during the bust of another Drumheller residence on Monday.

Chips with Salsa a little spicy but always welcome

by C. Aiello

You will forgive me for not appearing last week, but I have been preoccupied, physically, mentally and emotionally. I simply had more important things to look after. There comes a time in the lives of most of us when we can no longer take care of ourselves, through either infirmity or old age. It is no shame, we will all face it. With infirmity we may recover our strength, regain our independence, but when it is old age, it is hardly likely things will improve, as there is no cure for that particular condition. There may be flashes of the brilliance that once was, but they will become fewer and less bright as the flame flickers and dies. That’s life, and it’s death. Funny, on how entering the world we are made to leave the comfort and familiarity of a warm, dark place, and are pushed out into the cold light of day. We don’t leave willing nor without complaint, we kick and scream. At the end of our lives it is the reverse, we are leaving the cold, but now comfortable and familiar light of day to enter a warm, dark place with which we are unfamiliar. Again, we resist, but it is as futile as when we entered. As a baby first entering the world, we don’t know what awaits us, and so fear the unknown. As an adult, with a knowledge and love of and for God, we need have no fear, unless . . .

“Why would I resign?” So asked Ted Morton of the pack of media hounds after one of them asked if he was considering resigning, after his announcement that he would not deliver the budget. Answering a question with a question doesn’t really inspire confidence in the man. Next day, one day after Premier Stelmach announced that he was stepping down as leader, Ted Morton reversed his position so fast he should have been wearing back up warning beepers. “Why would I resign?” So you could seek the leadership of the party once Ed bails. Quick as that, Ted is the talk of the town, and just as quickly he’s cleaved the party down the middle. Ted has asked all those who joined the Wildrose Alliance to come back to the “mothership” (the P.C. party). Trouble is, those who joined Wildrose didn’t leave the mothership, but the other way around. The mothership needs to come around and rejoin those it abandoned. They no longer recognize the Conservative Party for what it once was. It has become an introverted, megalomaniacal monolith whose only concern is retention of power. It no longer has a feel for the actual needs of real people, but only for those that can keep it alive.

The valley brims with remnants of Drumheller’s rich history, and with the formation of a steering committee the town and two partners are looking to make sure historic monuments stay in existence. As councillor Tom Zariski volunteered for the Heritage Steering Committee plans which were set in motion over a year ago are starting to roll. Representatives from both the Chamber of Commerce and Community Futures Big Country will join Zariski and two volunteer members of the pub-

lic to begin a heritage inventory on landmarks in Drumheller. Heritage surveys have already taken place in Drumheller, with consultants coming into town last year who said 85 per cent of buildings in the downtown care have historical potential. That’s a significantly higher number than other communities in Alberta, Director of Community Services Paul Salvatore said. A ‘heritage inventory’ is planned to be completed by fall of this year. A $50,000 budget has been given to this project by the previous town council and with the chamber and Community Futures, the

Heritage Steering Committee will oversee this inventory. The inventory gives a baseline for identifying which buildings are most historically significant. “It gives you an appreciation for the heritage resource that we have. Drumheller obviously has so many great attractions visitors, but this is a very important thing for us as a community to step up and recognize the value these buildings have. We need to realize what we have.” This project would most likely lead to the ability of the town to designate properties as municipal heritage sites. “It sets in motion for the process for us to construct a municipal preservations bylaw,” said Salvatore, while adding it’s ultimately up to council to decide whether to instill a similar bylaw. “It opens up funding which would not necessarily exist for those properties,” said Salvatore. “Then you can identify historic items for a particular property, then apply for grants to upgrade or restore the property. “It gives us a baseline of information on the history of our buildings. Every day that goes by, we lose a little piece of that story and if we can document it, we’ll be able to preserve it and have a better sense of what it was and how it involves our history.” After the heritage inventory is completed, Drumheller would once again qualify for the Alberta Main Street Program. It provides a membership network, funding and expertise to municipalities to help restore historic integrity and architectural character to traditional main streets across Alberta. Drumheller would then qualify for grants and programs to further benefit the downtown core.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
