Tough Mudder tops 3,500 participants Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

With registration for Tough Mudder open for a little over a month, registrations are on pace for the September event. Drumheller Festival Society President Ryan Semchuck said Tough Mudder has confirmed just over 3,500 people registered to date. He said all the registrations are online and paid to the Tough Mudder so they’re guaranteed participants. “We’re still looking at our original projections of seven to eight thousand participants,” said Semchuck. Nick Cogger, General Manager for Tough Mudder Canada provided the numbers when he was here with the group’s marketing manger last week, touring the community and meeting all the local partners, Semchuk said. Their tour was from rum e Fo d i S in er s read Our ... e writ

Editor inSide Drumheller Dear Editor;

We had a very alarming experience coming to work Tuesday morning that we thought was worth sharing, since

one end of the valley to the other, starting at Dorothy, and going out to Horsethief Canyon. The two Tough Mudder executives had not been here before, and were impressed by both the beauty of the landscape and outlook of the citizens. “They completely fell in love with the scenery, loved the people, and are really looking forward to working with Drumheller to make this a success,” said Semchuck. They’ll be reviewing the event after with an eye towards future events He said if the first year is a success, the Festival Society is looking at a five-year commitment with Tough Mudder for Drumheller. “Our hopes are that we put on a good show, that everyone loves Drumheller, that we can entice people to come back to our community and continue to check out the event there’s still more than a month of school left. Shortly before 8:30 we were travelling northbound on Highway 9, when we suddenly noticed a child riding a bicycle across the southbound lanes, in the crosswalk, but without having stopped to push the button and activate the lights. We were able to stop easily, but this child was very fortunate that there was no southbound traffic and

year after year.” Semchuk explains one of the concerns facing the event is availability of accommodations. However, he notes the Tough Mudder crew coming to the event are the outdoor and adventurous type, so the Festival Society will be looking at using not just the hotels, but the area bed and breakfasts and campgrounds. “We do have lots of

tralized location where attendees could look after the booking of their own accommodations when they arrive in Drumheller. The Tough Mudder course surveying and design team are going to be out here in the next week or two, surveying the site and getting an idea of what they want to do for the obstacles,

and how they’re going to build the site. The Tough Mudder obstacle challenge is scheduled for September 6 and 7, at the Drumeheller Stampede Grounds. Visit the Tough Mudder website at www. toughmudder.com.

As anyone who comes into Drumheller in the morning knows, there is a wide variation in the speeds of vehicles coming off the south hill. a bicycle, was moving faster than a pedestrian, decreasing reaction time for southbound vehicles. After a few minutes of research, I learned that there doesn’t seem to be a legal requirement for a cyclist to dismount at a crosswalk, a crosswalk is a crosswalk regardless of whether the lights are flashing, a mounted cyclist is a vehicle, and there isn’t the same requirement to yield right

of way when a vehicle is using a crosswalk. All of which wouldn’t matter much had we been travelling a little faster and a few seconds later. So please - teach your children to use the safety measures that are there, and to walk their bikes across what can be a very busy highway. Michael Love Rosebud, AB

communities, tourism organizations, industry and governments,” said Bob Long president of Canadian Badlands. The Canadian Badlands is already Alberta’s most popular rural destination. In 2011, 4.2 million people visited the Canadian Badlands and spent $552 million. The marketing campaign will include targeted search engine marketing, website display ads and a Facebook campaign. There will also be newspaper and magazine buy-ins. It targets markets in Calgary, Edmonton, Regina and Saskatoon. This also coincided with CTV’s Canada AM contest for a family vacation in the Badlands, and on Thursday, May 15 Jeff Hutcheson was at the Royal Tyrrell Museum broadcasting weather segments for the show live.

“Boogie in the Badlands” May 24 The valley’s annual show and shine is set for Saturday, May 24. Boogie in the Badlands takes place downtown from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for it’s 18th annual show. Organizer Bryan Telford said this year, the show is raising funds for Alberta Wish Ride in conjunction with Alberta Children’s Wish Foundation. Last year Boogie raised about $1,000 to contribute toward the charity, which raised about $50,000 and saw five kid’s wishes come true. Telford re-directs his fund raising efforts every couple of years, in the

past having donated to the local Salvation Army and Nazarene Church, to name a few. Telford said there is no restriction on the cars that can join the show. “Old, new, fancy, work in progress, all makes, all models.” Since he’s worked on coordinating the show six years ago, Telford has seen a high of 107 entrants, which was about four years ago. The show doesn’t have a pre-registration - those interested in showing off their pride and joy on wheels arrive the morning of the show and pay their ten dollar registration fee. There is no charge to

spectators, but if they’re interested, they can make a donation, Telford said. There will be a few things different at this year’s Boogie in the Badlands - Telford has added a bike division, for motorcycles of any kind. He also has a couple of different vendors planned for this year one from Red Deer that sells mini-donuts, and another vendor selling neon signs and clocks. A number of local businesses have also generously donated items for a raffle table at the show, and there will be a concession available. Boogie in the Badlands hands out five awards at the show:

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

TELUS investing $500,000 in Drumheller in 2014 Submitted | inSide Drumheller

QUOTE

TELUS is investing $500,000 in Drumheller this year to expand and enhance LTE, the world’s fastest wireless technology. “TELUS operates one of the largest and fastest wireless broadband networks available anywhere in the world and this $500,000 investment in Drumheller will improve service for our customers at home and on the go,” said TELUS general manager Fred Weinheimer. “At work and on the go to special events like the upcoming Tough Mudder in September, TELUS is committed to expanding and bolstering our network to meet the ever-increasing demands of consumers.”

“Our philosophy, We Give Where We Live, is exemplified by our TELUS family of team members” Fred Weinheimer

This year, TELUS’ investment will advance our services for the benefit of Drumheller by: • Installing new wireless sites to introduce LTE and enhance wireless capacity and fill in coverage gaps • Updating older infrastructure and technology to enhance our network’s reliability

• Providing access to innovative healthcare IT solutions This significant investment is part of TELUS’ commitment to invest $2.6 billion in Alberta from 2014 through 2016. By the end of 2016, TELUS’ investment in operations and infrastructure across the province since 2000 will exceed $39 billion. “Across the province, our TELUS family truly sees themselves as members of each community where we operate, and we believe our investment in local organizations is just as important as our investment in technology,” continued. “Our philosophy, We Give Where We Live, is exemplified by our TELUS family of team members and retirees donating more than $100 million and over 1.53 million volunteer hours to charitable and community organizations throughout Alberta since 2000,” said Weinheimer. 4G LTE is the world’s fastest wireless technology, offering Internet downloads and uploads two to three times faster than previous speed. 4G LTE offers TELUS customers a wireless Internet connection as fast as their home Internet on their smartphones, tablets and Internet keys – bringing high-speed Internet everywhere they go.

thought Food for

Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist I can’t believe it’s time to think about sitting on the deck, barbecuing and enjoying appy’s. We don’t have to think about snow for months now!!! When I find a recipe that goes over really well with my guests, I tend to make it over and over again. This one was my “tried and true” appy for guests since the beginning of this year. It is easy to make, easy to serve and easy to eat! You don’t even have to bother with dishes – just a napkin works fine. This recipe is perfect for a May long-weekend get-together. I have combined two favorites to make one dish – caramelized bacon! (it has so many recipe possibilities) and Brie in puffpastry shells. Prepare frozen puff pastry shells as on the package. Slice wedges of brie just to fit inside the shells. Bake for about 5 minutes more, just to melt the cheese. Drizzle with raspberry jam or any type of jelly you prefer (I have used grape wine jelly) and top with two small sticks of caramelized bacon. You can also just make this with regular, cooked bacon. The puff pastry shell serves as a dish for this appy – your guests can just pick it up in hand and eat it with a napkin on the side. Here is the caramelized bacon recipe – any leftovers can be served on the side – just watch them disappear! Caramelized Bacon ½ c. brown sugar ½ c. pecans 2 tsp salt

1 tsp pepper 1/8 tsp cayenne 2 Tbsp maple syrup ½ lb. thick-sliced applewood-smoked bacon Combine brown sugar and pecans in food processor until ground up*. (Or, simply crush in a zip-loc bag.) Add seasonings, mix, then add the syrup and pulse to moisten crumbs. (or mix while still in the zip-loc) Cut each bacon slice in half and line the pieces up on a baking rack set on a cookie sheet (line with foil for easy clean-up) Spread the pecan mixture evenly on top of each piece of bacon. Bake at 375 for 30 minutes, until the topping is browned – be careful not to burn! The bacon will crisp as it cools; but be careful not to underbake or it won’t crisp up. I used maple bacon and regular syrup and that worked nicely, too. If you don’t have a rack for the cookie sheet, crumple foil, line the cookie sheet with it, and set the bacon on to bake it that way. (It won’t be sitting in the grease and will crisp nicely) *I find that a more coarse-texture works better than finely ground. Once cooled, this is lovely crumbled over a spinach salad. You can also crumble over roasted veggies, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc. As I said, the possibilities are endless!

They came, they saw, they got in shape. Everybody’s Gym has the result of its 2014 Fit Challenge. Since January, 61 participants took part in the challenge to lose fat and gain muscle. To kick off the challenge, each participant underwent an Electro Lipo Graph (ELG) test to determine their body fat and muscle, broken down into pounds. Over the next 12 weeks, participants took on their fitness regime. Whether it be diet, cardio, weight training or a combination of all. The contest wrapped up in the middle of April and again each participant underwent an ELG to see how they faired. A point was given for each pound of fat lost, and for each pound of muscle gained. Overall, the contestants lost 221.89 pounds of fat and gained 71.23 pounds of muscle. Lydell Gyug was the winner of the contest and for his effort he won $1,220, the pot collected from the entries. Trevor Woodford placed second, and he won a three-month membership for Everybody’s Gyms and 200 tanning minutes.
