Call Lyndell Trucking for all your bulk products by Debi Moon Royce Toews is the owner of his own company - Lyndell Trucking, and though Royce, his wife Debby and their 2 children live on a farm on the north eastern outskirts of the Village of Linden, Alberta, it is only a coincidence that the company name resembles the village name. “It is a convenient coincidence and I certainly don’t mind if customers relate the name of my trucking company with its location, but the name Lyndell is in fact, my legal middle name.” Having a sir name that is common to the area, Royce wanted a company name that was more unique. Lyndell Trucking will have been in business for 2 years come February 2010 but Royce has logged many hours of trucking and experience since he first started driving professionally some 15 years ago, (at the age of 18), confirming for himself that trucking was what he really wanted to do before investing in his first truck. Royce is building on his clientele to take on more and more closer-to-home hauling jobs, or at least in the province. This includes most bulk products such as feed, fertilizer and even coal. He is always grateful for jobs that can have him home in time for supper, but what he really enjoys is the comfort level he has with agriculturally related hauling. “I relate well with farmers in that I understand their needs and give them
confidence that I can be trusted to load up as per their instructions, without them having to worry or babysit me through the process. I enjoy farmers, mostly because I’m comfortable around them and partly because I find them to be exceptionally flexible and easy going. Whenever a mechanical glitch with the truck or some unforeseen circumstance crops up, farmers are not only quick to understand but usually find a way to help out. They are very loyal and I appreciate their business whenever it comes my way.” Having grown up with farming in Heart Valley, near Sexsmith in the Grande Prairie area, where his Dad had grain and pigs, Royce is fully cognizant of the necessity for thorough cleaning of the truck trailers between grain loads. “Sometimes a good sweep is all that is necessary but in other cases cross contamination can be a very legitimate concern and a thorough pressure wash is required. It would not be good to have even one kernel of canola going into fertilizer meant for a wheat crop.” Royce doesn’t mind splitting loads either, using just one trailer instead of the two that make up a super B. During the fall and winter months, mostly, Royce finds himself hauling coal and storing it in his yard for a surprising amount of businesses, even in the Linden and Three Hills areas, Carbon and Carstairs. “There are a few chicken

When I took the coal business over, it did amaze me how many were still utilizing coal.” Not all coal burns the same and Royce has found that his customers have a preference for the oiled coal, not because it burns more efficiently but because it is far less dusty. The coal is available at his farm for general sales. Royce usually takes his Super B up to the
Camrose mine for a load a month but that usually increases during winter. He has seen line-ups of up to 12 Super B’s, with a policy that requires at least 24-hour notice. “Hauling coal makes up for about one quarter of my business.” One of the earliest trucking jobs that Royce had was 2 winters of hauling for a commercial log company. “I was only 20 years old, had little experience and those logs were very intimidating. I had to learn quickly, all hands-on training, how to chain them properly and trust myself with that and the harsh winter driving conditions. I
somehow got it right and the experience became a good confidence builder.” Every trucker has his personal highway driving horrors and Royce considers the Winnipeg to Calgary stretch the worst with the flat terrain, no wind breaks, and with more than its fair share of blizzards and freezing rain. His trips west through Rogers Pass and the Fraser Valley area have taught him much about defensive driving techniques and brakes. “One of my scariest moments was having the jake (engine) brake fail on a old truck while I was still essentially a beginner. I made it down safe, but today, I still think about it every time I go west.” Today, Royce relies on a nearly perfected rule of thumb pertaining to pounds per square inch on what his speed can be starting out on a downhill run, that won’t overtax the brakes and should decrease the need for ever relying on the air brake application. “My wife is understandably nervous about those runs, mostly because of other drivers, but my young son is always at me to take him back, probably due to the fact that we counted 9 bear sightings on just that one trip and because he loves the tunnels.” When Royce is not out on the road, he is kept very busy remodeling their century-old home. His and Debby’s children, a 4-year old daughter and 6-year old son represent the 6th generation to live in
the family home, complete with barn, and a dam that was built during the horse and buggy era. “This is the family home and I hope to be here a very long while. I know my way around augers, tractors and am familiar with farm practices and I sincerely enjoy, every chance I get, to work for the farmer. Not all big contractor haulers can say that. Most don’t prefer farm pickups at all.” Royce laughingly added that if required, he’s a willing participant to the shoveling of grain (probably in memory of how many times he’s done it). He is looking to build on his trucking business with a farming clientele, enabling him to have the choice to take less jobs that require him to be gone all week on longer hauls, and allowing him to stay closer to home. What he offers is experience and youth, strength and a knowledge of farm practices. What you get when you phone is direct contact with the actual trucker. “This isn’t a big business. When you call me; you get me.” For Royce, it’s about giving personalized service. “I’m punctual and I’m flexible and I want to work. I offer competitive rates and I’m looking to prioritize for consistent customers.
