New upscale rail travel on the “Canadian”

VIA Rail boosts famed transcontinental train’s appeal, accessibility (NC)—Last fall VIA Rail Canada announced a $19.5 million program for the reconfiguration of 12 of the stylish stainless steel passenger cars used on its western transcontinental train, the Canadian, to increase its accessibility and market appeal. The work is being funded from the $407 million allocated for passenger rail improvements under the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.According to Steve Del Bosco, Chief, Marketing and Sales for VIA Rail, work is on track on the complete redesign and rebuilding of VIA’s eight Chateau sleeping cars and four Park sleeperdome-lounge cars with project completion slated for 2011. “The work involved in the modernization and major upgrading of this classic rolling stock is extensive but well worth it,” Del Bosco explained. “This investment will enable the Canadian to attract the growing clientele who are seeking more upscale travel experiences.” The eight Chateau sleeping cars will be reconfigured with an all-new arrangement of six upscale cabins designed to accommodate up to three passengers each. Each sleeping cabin will be completely self-contained and will include an en-suite washroom plus a separate shower. The new cabins will also feature wood paneling, sofa seating, a widescreen television and controls to enable passengers to raise or lower the beds whenever they desire. This elegant new design promises to position the Canadian at the forefront of new chic travel experiences available to discerning travelers. “This program will also substantially increase the train’s accessibility for travelers with special needs,” explained Del Bosco. The four existing Park car bedrooms will be replaced by two large upscale cabins. One will be identical to those in the rebuilt Chateau sleeping cars. The other will be an extra-large, fully-accessible cabin. It will provide separate, fully-accessible washroom and shower facilities. Each Park car will also feature an onboard wheelchair lift. “The Canadian, as a living legend, will continue to offer thousands of travelers from around the world the ultimate in safe, stylish and sustainable rail travel as it has done for more than a half-century,” said Del Bosco. How to save a bundle on summer items Have an eye on that gazebo? Want to stock up on new patio chair cushions? Could the kids use new bathing suits? Wait until the end of the season for the best buys on these items. Mid- to late-summer and into fall are ideal times to realize deep discounts on popular summertime buys. This is the most advantageous time to stock up on items that can still be used for a few more weeks and be put to full use come next year. Whether a shopper is looking for beach towels, lawn decor, flip-flops, beach toys, and more, prices dip lower and lower as the fall draws closer and closer. Check sale circulars or visit stores in person to shop the lowest prices. Here are some of the best deals to be had come the end of summer. * fans and air conditioners * barbecues/grill accessories * outdoor garden merchandise * patio sets * bathing suits * RVs * snorkeling gear * boats, canoes, kayaks * pool equipment and pool installation

* camping supplies * sunblock/bug spray Think ahead to trips the family is planning to a tropical locale in the winter. Stock up now on discounted bathing suits, shorts, tank tops, sandals and more so that there will be plenty of items to pack when the stores are filled with winter parkas and snow boots. Travel may be discounted in the fall as well. Many children are heading back to school and individuals may be able to score deals on

family-friendly resorts looking to fill hotel rooms. It doesn’t hurt to investigate. Now may also be the time many auto dealerships start cutting prices on leftover stock to make room for next year’s models. If in the market for a new car, start thinking about visiting a local dealership. Take advantage of end-of-summer sales to save anywhere from 50 to 90 percent on popular merchandise that can be stored and used next year.

Top summer learning mistakes

July 2010

(NC)— Each summer, parents ask themselves an important question – How do I help my children get ready for school in September without sacriďŹ cing their summer holidays? Achieving this goal is not about spending the summer buried in a textbook, but about helping your children ďŹ nd a balance between education and personal time. To support your efforts to keep your children sharp for the coming school year, Kumon Math and Reading Centres have highlighted the top six summer learning mistakes to avoid. 1. Ignoring math over the summer – According to the Canadian Council on Learning’s (CCL) report, Lessons in Learning: Summer Learning, children experience their greatest learning loss in math over the summer holidays. Coupled with ďŹ ndings from Ipsos-Reid for Kumon Math and Reading Centres that show the majority of Canadian families do not participate in math activities over the summer holidays to keep their children’s academic skills sharp, children are potentially entering the next grade at a disadvantage. 2. Believing your children do not need practice – Only 10 per cent of Canadian parents believe their child is performing at a below average level in school according to the ďŹ ndings from Ipsos-Reid and Kumon. This can lead to a false sense of conďŹ dence during the time of year when learning loss is a national concern. 3. Not setting up a summer learning routine – Thinking about taking a break from education this summer? Think about this – throughout the summer holiday, children who take a break from learning will lose a minimum of one month’s worth of in-class skills – that’s at least 30 minutes of loss each day. Following the same methodology as the Kumon Math and Reading Program, a daily routine is important for helping your children maintain their academic skills, develop a routine that works for them, develop time management skills, and build the conďŹ dence needed to excel in the classroom and beyond. 4.Working your child too hard over the summer – Addressing summer learning loss in your children before it begins is about manageable amounts of daily practice. Working your child too hard during the holidays can lead to academic burnout before your children even set foot in the classroom. 5. Being disengaged from your children’s summer learning – Being engaged in the work your child is doing over the summer sets a precedent regarding the importance of education in your home. Also, if you are engaged, it helps keep your children from developing poor habits that can affect their performance in the next grade, ensure they’re learning the correct answers from their daily practice, and much more. 6. Overlooking the support available in your community – Ensuring your children are prepared for the coming school year isn’t something that you need to do alone. There are programs in the community, like Kumon Math and Reading Centres that can support you as you work to foster your children’s academic development. Summer learning is the most important ďŹ rst step towards a successful school year. Avoiding the top mistakes made over the holidays will ensure your children enjoy tremendous success in the new school year, and experience your commitment to their unique and boundless potential ďŹ rst-hand. Create a spa experience at home People looking to escape stress often turn to spa treatments for rest and relaxation. However, if trips to the spa for massages and facials aren’t in the budget, create a spa experience at home. Stress is a big health problem. Over 50 percent of Canadians are concerned about the level of stress in their lives. And 62 percent of Canadians say that it’s their jobs that contribute to the most amount of stress. Stress can exacerbate existing health conditions and lead to new ones. Individuals may feel fatigued, irritable, depressed, overeat, undereat and suffer other consequences if overstressed. Doctors often suggest therapies to combat stress in people’s lives.

One such therapy can be massage or spa treatments popular in many salons. But these services can be expensive and might be an indulgence

better left as an occasional splurge. Those interested in reaping some of the benefits of spa treatments at home can try the following ideas.

* Invest in the right equipment. Purchase an ultra-soft and thick robe and slippers. Stock up on loofah sponges, longhandled bath brushes,

wash cloths, bath salts, and moisturizing creams. Simply using professional products can seem indulgent. * Homeowners with a

spa bathtub can indulge in soothing jet-propelled massage whenever they desire. If installing a new tub is not in the cards, purchase a spa mat that can be suctioncupped to the bottom of a traditional bathtub. An external pump blows air bubbles through the mat, creating the same effect as a spa tub. * Rely on aromatherapy. There are many essential oils that can be added to bath water or applied to the body. Depending on the aroma, a person can induce calm and contentment simply by inhaling a few scents. * Ask a spouse to provide a massage. He or she can use unscented mineral or olive oil to rub down achy parts of the body. It is much more cost-effective than a spa massage.
