Key Lime Pie is summer living at its best

PROFESSIONALISM RUNS IN ITS FAMILY.

When it comes to the best sprayer for your buck, nothing compares with the 7000 Series SpraCoupe. Its color may be new, but it still comes from the same experts you’ve come to trust, who know the SpraCoupe like nobody’s business. You’ll soar through fields quickly with a fuel-efficient Perkins diesel engine, 725-gallon product tank and booms as wide as 90 feet. Yes, the best sprayer in its class just got better. See how at applylikeapro.com ®

If there’s one dessert that says “summertime,” it’s key lime pie – sweet yet tart and completely refreshing, it’s a perfect way to top off a barbecue or to complement a glass of iced tea on a hot day. For this recipe look for key limes at the grocery store, which are smaller than regular limes. You can substitute with regular limes if key limes are not available. More summer pie recipes are available online at www.tenderflake.ca. Preparation time: 30-45 minutes.

®

Serves: 6 INGREDIENTS 1 1 4 ½ cup

Tenderflake Frozen Pie Shell (300 mL) Can Sweetened Condensed Milk Egg Yolks, Beaten (125 mL) Fresh Lime Juice (approx. 6 limes) Whipped Cream

DIRECTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Preheat oven to 400˚F (200˚C) and prepare the pie shell according to package directions for a baked pie shell. Remove from oven and set aside to cool. Lower oven temperature to 350°F (180°C). Whisk together sweetened condensed milk, egg yolks and lime juice in a medium bowl until well combined. Pour lime filling into baked pie crust. Place pie on baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and cool completely at room temperature. Serve with whipped cream.

OLDS COLLEGE PRESENTS NEW BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM .....Debi Moon

Olds College has identified yet another career path by which "You Can Explore Your Passion". The first graduates of the new 2-year Business Administration Program walked across the graduation stage this past Saturday, June 19, 2010 at the Community Learning Campus in Olds. Graduates of the program earned diplomas in one of two majors: a General major and a Marketing and Sales major. A third major for the program was added in the fall of 2009: the Accounting major.

Picking Your Major Each year of the program is made up of two semesters of study with students taking 5 courses in each semester. The first year of the Business Administration program is common to all of the majors within the program, offering courses such as Accounting Principles I, Communications and Personal Management, Microeconomics, Business Mathematics, and Business Communications. The second semester entails Accounting Principles II, Marketing Principles, Organizational Behavior, Business Law, and Macroeconomics. In the second year, students specialize in one of the three majors: Marketing and Sales, General Business, or Accounting. The second year courses of Marketing and Sales major include Customer Relationship Management, International Marketing, Financial Management, Human Resources Management, and Retail Management in the third semester and Professional Practice, Managing Information Systems, Business Strategy, Professional Selling and Networking, E-marketing, and Project Management or Investments in the fourth semester. In their third semester, General Business Majors will take Finance, Managerial Accounting, Statistics, Human Resource Management and International Marketing. During the last semester the General major takes Professional Practice, Business Strategy, Managing Information Systems plus any two of Project Management, Investments, Professional Selling and Networking, E-marketing or Intermediate Accounting: Assets. For the Accounting major, the third semester courses are Intermediate Accounting: Liabilities & Equity, Finance, Managerial Accounting, Statistics and Human Resource Management. During the last semester the Accounting major has Intermediate Accounting: Assets, Professional Practice, Business Strategy, Managing Information Systems plus either Project Management or Investments. Upon Graduating Graduates of the Olds College Business Administration program also have a couple choices when they have completed the program. They can pursue their careers in their field of business or they can continue their studies towards a bachelor's degree at any of Okanagan College (Kelowna, BC), Royal Roads University (Victoria, BC) or at the University of Lethbridge (U of L). On June 15, 2010, Olds College arranged a full block transfer Articulation Agreement with the U of L. "This agreement was signed by the President and Vice President of the University just last week," stated Dr. Terry Males, Chairman of the School of Business at Olds College. "It's a 2 (year) for 2 (year), full block credit transfer, and a very nice arrangement to have. Not many universities will do that for us." By signing the agreement, the University recognizes the advanced standing of a diploma in Business Administration from the program offered at Olds College, allowing a graduate with the diploma to transfer those 2 years should they wish to pursue a university degree. Often courses from one educational institution are not always given full merit at another institution forcing students to 'prove' themselves, extending their class time with 'make-up courses' by sometimes a full year. To that end, Olds College and University of Lethbridge have partnered so the full 2 years of the business administration diploma courses are fully recognized. Students completing the 2 year program from Olds College would also be qualified to immediately pursue positions in a variety of businesses and organizations as the courses are designed to allow a graduate to enter a career in business directly upon graduation. Over the course of 4 semesters (fall: September - December) and (winter: January - April) the program will develop a student's business management practices, marketing abilities, and human relations skills. Positions could involve marketing, sales, accounting, consultation and other management duties or an alternate career path could be Entrepreneurship. "This program would be absolutely essential if someone was thinking of starting their own business." Completing the program also offers students great career pathways. A Major in Accounting prepares the individual for entry level accounting positions and would fulfill the transfer requirements for a degree and professional accounting designations such as a Certified General Accountant or Certified Management Accountant. "The diploma from Olds would be a fundamental first step in that direction." Having a Marketing and Sales Major would prepare an individual for a position marketing a variety of products and services or to assume a sales management position. A General Management Major emphasizes project management skills and would prepare an individual for a variety of positions in business including a management role in a designated business unit or as part of the general management team. Admission Requirements The requirements of admission to this program include a high school diploma or its equivalent with at least a passing grade in English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2, Pure Math 20 or Applied 20, or in two 20 level subjects or one 30 level subject. Should you be planning to transfer to the University of Lethbridge, Pure or Applied Math 30 is recommended. General requirements for Alternate Admission Status have recommendations for students to register for STDY 100 - College Success Skills (offered the week before classes begin in Fall), have keyboarding skills and experience in the use of a common office software packages with word processing and spreadsheets. High school students are encouraged to complete CTS modules 1010, 1020, 1030 and 1060. Serving its Rural Roots "Olds College serves the local communities, primarily from Alberta, but often students come from Saskatchewan or eastern British Columbia as well. We like to diversify our programs and though many of these programs are agriculturally based, including an equine program, we believe that a Business Administration Diploma Program can also be a wonderful asset for areas outside the major urban centres. The businesses that inhabit the towns and smaller cities demand leading edge marketing and accounting skills to maintain their competitive edge. This program delivers those skills in that environment. We offer options, both ag related and non-agricultural. I estimate we provide around 20 programs that try to meet the needs of our rural-based communities." The College has on-site residences and most students who apply are accepted into them, but if not, there are rental accommodations to be found off campus as well. The setting is exquisite with a botanical garden on site and the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop. Wether you want to improve your farm management skills or seek a career in the world of business, this 2-year Business Administration diploma program should offer widespread opportunities, and the skills needed to launch such a career. Boost your immune system for a healthier summer During the summer months our immune health may be impacted by increased pollutants, foodborne illness, or even pesky summertime colds. With our hectic lifestyles we often don’t recognize all the factors that can harm our overall immune health. In a recent Leger Marketing survey it was revealed that 64% of Canadians believe they do not have a healthy routine that improves their immune system function. Sherry Torkos, a holistic pharmacist and author of The Canadian Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, recommends five ways to boost your immune system and stay healthy this summer. Eat Brightly Coloured Fruits and Vegetables Take advantage of the fresh produce that is more available and affordable during the summer months. These foods are loaded with vitamins and minerals, which help to support immune system function. The natural colours found in fruits and vegetables are the result of pigmented antioxidant compounds, such as bioflavonoids and carotenoids. Some of the best sources of these antioxidants include berries, grapes, bell peppers, tomatoes, carrots and dark green vegetables. Get Adequate Sleep Sleep restores and refreshes us mentally, emotionally and physically, and it is also essential for the proper function of the immune system. Set aside 7 to 9 hours for sleep, and not just most nights—every night. Take Immune Boosting Supplements There are a number of herbs and supplements that can help support immune function and even boost the activity of immune cells, including Immunity-FX, a patented extract of American ginseng with reishi mushroom. These proven immune boosting ingredients offer your immune system the additional daily support you may need. De-Stress Stress causes levels of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to rise, and when this happens chronically it can impair the activity of the immune system. To better manage stress, try meditation, yoga, deep breathing or find a relaxation strategy that works for you. Get Regular Exercise Physical activity can boost immune function and reduce your risk of getting sick. Interestingly though, more is not always better. Aim for one hour each day of moderate-intensity activity such as cycling, brisk walking or tennis. Check out your body’s immunity score and get some tips on how to boost your immune system by taking the healthy living quiz at www.livehealthyquiz.com.
