PER SERVING: about 490 cal, 26g pro, 36g total fat (12g sat fat), 15g carb, 2g Úbre, 120mg chol, 860mg sodium. %RDI: iron 8%, In a large pot, cover the ribs with water; add calcium 4%, vit A 15%, vit C 10%

lemon slices, bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to maintain a vigorous simmer and continue to cook partially covered for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the meat is tender but not falling off the bones. Drain and transfer to tray or platter. Discard lemon. Meanwhile, combine peaches, chili sauce, soy and gingerroot in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Preheat the barbecue to medium heat. Brush the ribs generously with the peach glaze and grill for 10 minutes. Brush the ribs again and grill 10 minutes longer, until the glaze is caramelized. Alternatively, roast the ribs in a 425F (220C) oven until glaze is caramelized, about 20 to 30 minutes. Slice into ribs. Serve warm or at room temperature with any remaining glaze. Makes 6 servings. www.newscanada.com

How to throw the best backyard barbecue With fall just over the horizon, kids across the country are getting ready to return to school while moms and dads are saying so long to summer office hours. Though it might seem as if autumn is right around the corner, the nation’s grill masters know there’s still plenty of time to revel in one of summer’s most beloved summer traditions. Backyard barbecues have been a staple of summer for as long as most people can remember. As the sun prepares to set on summer, there’s still time to throw the best backyard barbecue of the season. Grilling enthusiasts can make the most of their final backyard bash of the year by employing the following tips. * Make it an event instead of another barbecue. Thanks to the laid back nature of summer, many backyard barbecues come together at the last minute or a day or so in advance. For an end of summer sendoff, hosts should break from the norm and print

up formal invitations to let guests know this won’t be the standard backyard barbecue. Invitations can be created in a matter of minutes and received in as few as three days. With an invitation in hand, guests will be more enthusiastic and likely

to make the final backyard barbecue of the year the best of the entire season. * Choose a theme. After a season spent eating hamburgers and hot dogs, many guests might feel less than enthusiastic about attending yet another backyard barbecue. However, hosts can

set their soiree apart from the rest by giving the party a theme. For instance, refer to the party as the “End of Summer Barbecue Bash” and invite friends and relatives over for one last warm-weather get-together. Hosts can even go the extra mile and make their

own custom T-shirts commemorating the event. * Don’t abandon tradition entirely. While it can be tempting and fun to experiment at a backyard barbecue, hosts should also embrace some favorite traditions. Guests will no doubt expect the standard

fare, including salads, hot dogs and hamburgers. So even if there’s going to be some experimenting going on, be sure to have the old standbys on the menu as well. It’s also important for hosts to peruse the guest list ahead of time. Doing so ensures there will be enough food for everyone and that the menu features food for those with unique diets, be it vegetarians or those with medical restrictions. Ask any guests when sending out invitations if they have any such dietary restrictions. * Decorate the grounds. By the end of summer, it might take more for hosts to get guests excited about a backyard barbecue than just a backyard and a hot grill. Hosts hoping to make the night as memorable as it is fun should considering decorating the backyard. Banners in the backyard can commemorate the end of summer and invite guests to let loose outdoors for one last night spent under the stars with family and friends.

Unexpected hot spots in your home (NC)—We all try our best to maintain a clean, healthy living space for ourselves and our families. But there are many germs lingering around our homes that we could be missing. Of course it’s impossible to avoid coming into contact with all germs and viruses but if you are aware of what is in your home, you have a better chance of defending against them. Here are some of the hot spots in your home you may not have considered: Hand towels In home bathrooms with heavy foot traffic, shared cloth towels are often damp and germy due to overuse. Even if a towel looks clean, it may have viral, bacterial or fungal contaminants which can be transferred to hands when drying them. Health Canada recommends not using a common hand towel to dry hands. Instead, use a one-time use towel so you know you are getting a clean, fresh, dry towel every time.

No appointment necessary $$$ on the spot

Pet food dishes Pets don’t always practice good hygiene, and nor do we when it comes to their dishes. Pet bowls are often left unwashed for longer than they should be and as a result they collect germs and bacteria. Be sure to wash Fido’s dishes regularly to keep both pets and family members healthy. Light switches and door knobs Light switches (including lamp switches) and door knobs see a lot of hand traffic each day and that makes them a hot spot for germs. Cleaning them off regularly – once a week when people are healthy or daily if someone is ill - with antibacterial wipes or sprays will help keep the spread of germs down. Purses, briefcases and backpacks When we are out and about we often place our bags on the floors of restaurants, offices and even public washrooms. By doing this our bags can pick up all kinds of germs and bacteria, so make 1. Bring inoff the quality used brand name sure you wipe bags regularly to avoid tracking contaminants into the home.

How to choose a sweet spot for studying

As school gets back into full swing, schoolaged kids across the country are once again spending their afternoons doing homework instead of lounging around the house as if it were still summer vacation. While home might be the ideal spot to spend lazy summer afternoons, it’s often not ideal for doing homework or working on other school projects. However, finding a study spot does not have to involve packing the kids into the car and heading to the nearby public library. In fact, parents can create the ideal study spot right at home. * Make the room available at all times. First and foremost, a study spot needs to be available to kids every day. If Mom or Dad has a home office and travel two or three days a week, that’s still not an ideal spot for studying, as Mom and Dad will be working in the home office themselves whenever they’re not out on the road. When choosing a study spot, be sure to look for a place in

the home that’s available to kids at all times, not just certain days of the week. * Look for a distraction-free zone. Today’s kids have more to distract them than ever before. Computers, video games, television, and even cellular phones can all keep kids from making the most of their study time. Look for a spot in the home that’s devoid of distraction. It should be a place where the television cannot be heard and kids won’t have access to phones, video games or other items that might make it hard to concentrate on schoolwork. * Don’t make things too comfortable. While an uncomfortable chair can make it difficult to concentrate on studies, it can also be hard to focus when the environment is overly comfortable and accommodating. If kids like to study in their bedrooms, be sure to have desks in there. If there’s nothing but a bed and a beanbag chair, kids are almost certain to spend more time napping than

they are studying. * Keep things on the bright side. Poorly lit rooms tend to make kids drowsy, which can make it more difficult to study and absorb information. When finding a study spot, if it’s not possible to find a room that’s naturally bright with sunlight, make sure the room is well lit with lamps or an overhead light fixture. * Check the room’s temperature. A study spot in the home should not be too cold or too hot. As any homeowner knows, some rooms in the home are colder than others, while some rooms feel like a sauna. When looking for a study spot, look for a room that is not extreme in either direction. One that provides a steady, comfortable temperature (room temperature, for instance) is better than a room that might get too cold in winter or prove too hot in early autumn. Either of these scenarios would force kids to switch study spots during the school year, which could prove detrimental to study habits.

CHATEAU THREE HILLS “Where we were, where we are, and where we are going.” Where we were...

First wall going up

It was five years ago that the building of Chateau Three Hills started to become a reality. The rains came and the ground turned into slippery, sliding mud as the concrete pouring, tamping and framing carried on. “Action City developed on the east side of the Town of Three Hills on Main Street east, just a block past “as far as you can go”. There stood a fifth wheel trailer, representing an office for the newest and latest style of a retirement residence to happen. This was to become what the coffee shop talk was saying “it would not happen”. While the momentum was building on the inside of the trailer, several individuals had the foresight to make a deposit on a suite on the soon-to-be-built Chateau. This brought encouragement to the owners as a sign of the Chateau becoming a reality. Peter says what kept Verna and him going was the vision of the end results of smiling faces in and about the Chateau’s dining room, hallways, special events, family times and all the rest of the retirement community established within. That “was where we were”.

Now it’s “where we are”...

First section of roof structure being put in place

Four years have passed since the Chateau opened its doors for occupancy – the fourth anniversary celebrated just this past week. The Chateau physical structure is finished, the landscaping is completed and gracious retirement living is in full operation. Many individuals and groups have visited and toured the Chateau, seeking to discover how they too could enjoy such a community for their seniors in their own area, using the Chateau as a Model. Many professionals including representatives from Alberta Health have visited, marveled at the structure and the atmosphere created for our very deserving retired citizens to enjoy. Yes, it’s all about retiring in style and receiving service with a smile – a smile that comes from one another – a smile that comes from the young server who comes to the table to take and deliver your dinner order. The Chateau has created an income for adults and high school students alike, also helping the employment situation which would not have otherwise been. Many a young person has been helped through short term employment to gain the finances needed for their own needs or to enable their plan for a trip of service to another country, and thus bring happiness there. Thus the ripple effect continues. Chateau Three Hills has attracted residents from far and wide – Calgary, Northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and B.C. as well as the local seniors, who have “come home” to retire. All are enjoying life in this friendly, safe and secure town of Three Hills, located approximately one hour from Calgary and one hour from Red Deer. Three Hills has all the attractions of the big lights - shopping, camping, golfing, bowling, tennis, aquatic centre, hockey and curling arena, award-winning Seniors Outreach program. Regular bus trips to Red Deer and to Olds are made possible through the Seniors Outreach shuttle bus, a project funded by local businesses, in return for volunteer services. This wonderful concept was created and carried through thanks to Tim Shearlaw, Owner and Editor of the local Capital newspaper.

And next “where we are going”...

Chateau Three Hills, completed facility

We are pleased to announce that Chateau Three Hills and Continuum Health Care have joined efforts in the process of “aging in place”. As of September 1, 2010, Continuum Health Care will be managing company for Chateau Three Hills. From day one the Chateau owners’ plan and objective has always been to add the supportive living addition to the Chateau. Partnering with a contracted health care provider will speed up that process. Continuum Health Care Holdings Ltd. is the care provider able to the do the job, with its well established system of operations, they have the ability to carry the Chateau to the next level of supportive living. This company is an Alberta based care provider, focussed on the development and professional management of quality seniors supportive living facilities. They operate several such facilities in Central Alberta. Now with the introduction of Continuum, we at the Chateau will be able to experience Alberta Health having a greater interest in the Three Hills area. As for employment, this partnership will add to the opportunities in Three Hills. Because of the location of Three Hills, and the health educational programs offered through Prairie Bible Institute, it will be a big plus to attract more people to this area. Employment possibilities are available in many areas: • Administrator • Department Supervisors in food services, housekeeping, health care, maintenance

Hear what our Residents are saying...

Peter Neufeld welcomes Stacey Dyck, Continuum Health Care

* “It’s like a family; there are a good group of caring people here.” * “We can put our heads on our pillows at night and not worry. I can’t imagine spending my retirements years anywhere else.” * “Three Hills has good medical facilities; hospital pharmacists, doctors, dentists, optometrist, chiropractor.” * “Here we’re not lonesome.” * “The meals are all balanced and attractively served.” * “Three Hills has good medical facilities; hospital pharmacists, doctors, dentists, optometrist, chiropractor.”
