100 YEARS OF
a zero waste event In an effort to be true to our principles of “reduce, reuse, recycle”, Bread & Roses 2013 will once again be a “zero waste event”.
The idea of bread and roses is part of a historical tradition that began with the Lawrence, Massachusetts textile workers’ strike of 1912. Since that time, “Bread and Roses” has served as a slogan for many progressive struggles in the United States. For the most part, “Bread” has represented a living wage and “Roses” has referred to workers’ desire for dignity and respect. On January 12, 1912 nearly 25,000 textile workers - mostly immigrant women - left the mills and poured into the streets of Lawrence, Massachusetts. After three months, the strike ended in a victory - with wage increases in mill towns throughout New England. The strike changed the face of both the labor and feminist movements. It was the first major labor action in U.S. history that was led by women, and for the first time there was a conscious effort to unite workers of all nationalities. Every union meeting was translated into 25 different languages. It is in this spirit of collective action and coalition building that the Fund for Santa Barbara continues to support grassroots activists and community organizations working for social, economic, environmental and political change.
The Fund is working with GreenProject Consultants to make trash a thing of the past. A zero waste event is one giant step in that direction. By taking notice of the waste we produce and finding a responsible way to dispose of it we are not only gentler on the environment but create some useful byproducts along the way. At this event, the only trash cans that you will find are the ones literally cemented to the ground. But nothing here today needs to go in there. Instead, all of your recyclables should go in the bright blue boxes labeled RECYCLE. These boxes are where you should put your hard plastic items, soda cans, glass bottles and so on. The bright green containers are for compostables and are labeled COMPOST. What the heck is a compostable??? At Bread & Roses, that’s your leftover food, your cup, the little spoons from your soup, and even the plate you ate off of. All of these serviceware items are made from compostable materials like corn or sugarcane and will be composted at high heat into great soil amendment for gardens. Look around for GreenProject Consultants staff if you have any questions and we will help you figure out where to put your items. Thank you for helping us make this a zero waste event!
