Dear friends, Welcome to the Civic Center. We’re proud to present these three great productions in our Willis Broadway Series. American Idiot is an innovative production, as it is based on the hugely successful 2004 Green Day album of the same name. Written as a “rock opera” (in the vein of The Who’s Tommy and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar), the album translated nicely into a show that made its debut at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in September 2009 and then transferred to Broadway’s St. James Theatre, opening on April 20, 2010. The show had a one-year run on Broadway and has been touring for the last two years. We welcome back to our stage Rain – A Tribute to The Beatles. We’ve presented the show three times prior, and this appearance occurs almost exactly 50 years after the “British Invasion” of The Beatles in February 1964. The group’s first performance in the U.S. was on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, on which they performed five songs. One of those songs was “Till There Was You” from Broadway’s The Music Man, written by Iowa-born composer Meredith Willson. Blue Man Group started as a performance ensemble in New York in the late 1980s. After three years of performing in clubs and event venues, the group premiered their show in the Astor Place Theatre in late 1991, where it is still being performed today. I had the good fortune to catch the show in New York in 1995, and I remember it to this day as being creative, inventive and very entertaining. Des Moines Performing Arts is dedicated to bringing the best of entertainment to Central Iowa. Thank you for your support of DMPA and the Willis Broadway Series, and enjoy the show.

GREEN DAY (Music & Lyrics) – vocalist/ guitarist BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG (Book & Lyrics), bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool – were kids from workingclass backgrounds who came of age in the underground punk scene in Berkeley. Even though they had released two records prior (1039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk), they announced their arrival with 1994’s Dookie, a dynamic blast of exuberant punk-pop that sold 15 million copies and earned the band its first Grammy® Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Over the years, Green Day continued to top the charts with their subsequent studio albums Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning, while entertaining millions of fans with their frenetic live shows. But it was their landmark 2004 album American Idiot that launched Green Day into the stratosphere. American Idiot debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, earned seven Grammy® nominations (winning two, including Best Rock Album), and raised the bar for modern rock and roll. WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST JOE BITHORN (Vocals, Lead Guitar, Guitar Synth, Sitar, Original Broadway Cast) grew up in Manhattan and Long Island, where he was exposed to a variety of music including jazz, Latin, classical and more. By age three, his musical father taught his children how to sing harmony. He was profoundly influenced by the experiences he had at Carnegie Hall through his Mom, who worked with the Festival Casals. Thanks to The Beatles’ appearance on “Ed Sullivan”, Joe took a strong interest in the guitar. Early influences include the band Cream, and Joe developed the ability to learn guitar parts by ear by age 14. By age 16, he was so proficient that he was recruited for studio sessions. While in high school, Joe and his brother formed the Bithorn Brothers Band, performing the early music of the Allman Brothers Band. Joe heard about an audition for Beatlemania and was hired for the touring production as George. After touring with the show in North America, Joe joined Rain in 1983 and has been touring the world ever since.

STEVE LANDES (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Harmonica, Piano, Original Broadway Cast) a life-long, second generation Beatles fan, Steve taught himself guitar at ten by listening to Beatles records and by 13 was fronting a top 40 cover band in his native Philadelphia. At 17 he joined Beatlemania and further developed his musicianship, touring the world with the show. After “passing the audition” with the existing Rain band members in 1998, his career was set. On one of his travels to England, he found himself at Liverpool’s Casbah Club, owned by pre-Ringo Beatles drummer Pete Best. Encouraged to get on stage, Steve belted out lead vocals to the Beatles rocker “Slow Down,” while Best sat in on drums. As a backup musician, Steve has performed alongside legendary sixties artists Peter Noone (Herman’s Hermits), Joey Molland (Badfinger), Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels and Tiny Tim. As an actor, he appeared in the films Wedding Bell Blues, For Which He Stands and Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! RALPH CASTELLI (Drums, Percussion, Vocals, Original Broadway Cast) was born and raised in southern California, surrounded by a musically talented family, and by age six became passionate about playing drums. On that momentous night in February, 1964, when The Beatles first appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” Ralph was hypnotized and knew playing drums was what he was born to do. Captivated by Ringo Starr and The Beatles that night, Ralph’s excitement continued to grow, and his dream would eventually become his reality. After touring and performing with numerous bands and pursuing his acting career, Ralph landed the role of Ringo Starr in the touring production of Beatlemania and was also cast as Ringo in Beatlemania: The Movie. His talent, drum techniques, humor, style and appearance were in his favor. Ralph joined Rain in 1986 and was thrilled to be on Broadway.

JOEY CURATOLO (Vocals, Bass, Piano, Guitar, Original Broadway Cast) grew up in a Brooklyn household where classical music and opera formed the soundtrack. A natural musician, he was infatuated with The Beatles, taught himself guitar at age 10 and played piano by ear at 16. After winning multiple McCartney sound-alike contests, Joey toured with the Broadway production of Beatlemania. He joined Rain shortly after, and helped transform the band into the multimedia production it is today. In addition, he is an active singer/songwriter and studio musician. His original Christmas song “Wishing You a Very Merry Christmas” is featured on Broadway’s Carols for a Cure, Volume 12 (to benefit BC/EFA) as well as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Hope for the Holidays charity album. When Universal Pictures needed a McCartney sound, they contacted Joey to record the song “Love Take Me Down” for the recently released comedy Role Models. For Joey, performing on Broadway was a dream come true.

MARK BEYER (Keyboard, Percussion) began piano lessons at age 8; at 12 was given special acceptance into a local 34

University musical school where he was privately trained in piano and music theory. At 14, he began experimenting with electronic keyboards and synthesizers of the 1970s, and played professionally in a progressive rock band. As keyboard technology advanced, Mark became known for his uncanny reproductions of elaborate sound textures, exotic instruments, and simulating full orchestra.

JIM IRIZARRY (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Piano, Harmonica) is from Chicago, IL, and began singing and playing the music of his favorite band, The Beatles, at the age of 12. He performed in local Chicago Beatle bands and learned the harmonica to master some of his early Beatle favorites. Years later Jim visited Liverpool for Beatle Week and made several appearances at the Cavern Club. He naturally captures the look and sound of Lennon and transforms himself through all eras of The Beatles, as well as recreating John’s famous humor and onstage antics.

As the managerial and creative mind that transformed Rain from a 1970’s southern California bar band doing Beatles covers into an ultraprofessional group, Mark Lewis recruited the excellent musicians who would gel into Rain’s long-standing line-up. He traces his love of the Fab Four to the Sunday night of February 9, 1964, when his generation was smitten by The Beatles on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Originally called Reign, the band gained national fame, changed its name to Rain and cut the soundtrack to the madefor-TV movie Birth of The Beatles (thanks to Dick Clark). An accomplished pianist at 13, having studied since age five, he began his career playing the Farfisa organ in teenage rock bands around his native Los Angeles. It was Mark, the original keyboard player with Rain, who worked out all of the musical parts and sounds that enabled Rain to bring to life many songs that The Beatles themselves never performed live.

CHRIS SMALLWOOD (Keyboard, Percussion) grew up in Kentucky. He fell in love with Beatles music as a young kid, but didn’t fall onto a piano bench until high school, when he broke his leg. Just two years later, he was invited to Kentucky’s prestigious Governor’s School for the Arts Program. In 2008, Chris received a Bachelor of Music from Belmont University in Nashville, and in 2010 earned his Master of Music from the University of Louisville. Chris and his wife, Nicki, live in Nashville. TOM TEELEY (Vocals, Lead Guitar, Guitar Synth, Sitar). A native New Yorker, Tom made his stage debut as George Harrison in the original Broadway production of Beatlemania, and also appeared in Dick Clark’s Rock ‘N’ Roll! The First 5000 Years, portraying John Lennon, Paul Simon, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jerry Lee Lewis and more. His film credits include the role of George in Beatlemania: the Movie and Peggy Sue Got Married. He has performed with Joe Jackson, Sophie B Hawkins and Marshall Crenshaw, and collaborated with Alice Cooper, Tommy James, The Monkees, and Desmond Child. DOUGLAS COX (Drums, Percussion, Vocals) was born in Kansas City and raised in Texas. Through his parents’ records he discovered Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Buddy Holly, but was profoundly moved by one song, The Beatles “Ticket to Ride.” Doug drummed for 16 years in Dallas’ top Beatles tribute, A Hard Night’s Day. He has many memories pounding those “pagan skins” in Las Vegas, Liverpool, in London recording videos with VH-1 in Abbey Road Studio 2 and backing Tony Sheridan in Hamburg’s Kaiserkeller. 35

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST IAN B. GARCIA (Vocals, Bass, Piano, Guitar) was born in the exotic coastal town of Viña del Mar, Chile. He currently resides in Toronto, Canada. Self-taught in voice, guitar, piano and bass he has evolved over the years into a versatile and mature multi – instrumentalist. In 2002 while performing locally he caught the attention of a Beatles tribute act that was in need of a Paul McCartney. The next 5 years would see Garcia honing in and becoming a professional entertainer as he would gradually grow into his mentor’s character. “I have learned so much about playing Sir Paul, that my musical abilities have gone to places I could never have imagined” says Garcia . “It’s those moments like getting the phone call to perform in and be a part of RAIN – A Tribute To The Beatles that I respect my line of work and the gift that I have been given. “I am constantly evolving as a person and as a performer. To eventually tackle the complex musical genius of McCartney in RAIN came as an inevitable challenge.” Garcia proudly states.

Early yet important musical influences stemmed from a blend of past era funk, soul, jazz, rock, and others. From there he went on to study music in an academic setting through highschool and college participating in Jazz, Symphonic, and percussion ensembles. PAUL CURATOLO (Vocals, Bass, Piano, Guitar) The Beatles became Paul’s biggest influence as a child growing up with RAIN. At ten years old, his musical journey began when he taught himself the drums. He quickly adapted to guitar & piano which drove him to write and record his own music. When he was 14, as a member of the pop band “Wayward”, he went on to record five albums. Until recently the band has toured the U.S. and was voted home town heroes in A.P. magazine.(Alternative Press). Paul’s love for the Beatles has driven him to master the character of Paul McCartney down to every detail. From vocal inflections to turning the bass over to perform lefthanded. He studied acting at Chicago College of Performing Arts, where he worked with Lookingglass, About Face, and Chicago Shakespeare theater companies. MIKE BROWN (Blue Man) has been Blue for over a decade. Hailing from Virginia, Mike has performed as a Blue Man in New York City, Boston, Chicago, Toronto, Berlin, Oberhausen and on Norwegian Cruise Lines. He’s thrilled to now be here performing in BMG’s National Tour. For him this is a dream come true. He wouldn’t be here without the love and support from his family and friends. ANTHONY RISCICA (Percussion/Kit) has written and recorded for both screen and television playing for clients such as VH1, Nickelodeon, and National Geographic. JULIAN CASSANETTI (Strings) has been with Blue Man Group since the early 2000s, when he started in the Boston production as an usher. After joining the Boston production as a band member, he went on to perform in many different Blue Man productions. He’s also played with bands such as Drug Rug, Viva Viva, and The Lot Six. Wellknown for his mantra “what’s good for the goose isn’t necessarily good for the gander.”

TERRY TUNGJUNYATHAM (Strings) joined Blue Man Group Boston in 2007 as a Chapman Stick and Zither player. He has also performed with Blue Man Group on Norwegian Cruise Line. In his spare time, Terry designs and builds his own line of guitar effects pedals called Push+Pull Pedals.

JERRY KOPS (Strings Swing) is a New Yorkbased musician who is extremely grateful to be a part of the Blue Man Group family. He has been a Chapman stick sub in the NYC production of Blue Man Group since Fall 2006 and has also had the good fortune of performing as a rhythm guitarist in the Broadway musical Rock of Ages. Thank you to my beautiful wife Katie, mom, dad and our little four-legged boy Ziggy. I wouldn’t be anywhere without all your love and support!

JEFFREY ALAN WRIGHT (Percussion / Kit Swing) began drumming in middle school and never stopped. He was a proud member of Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps, and The Concord Blue Devils. Jeff was hired by Blue Man Group in 2007 and spent 18 months on the North American Tour between 2010 and 2012. He is very happy to remain involved with the tour on a more limited basis while fulfilling his duties in the Orlando based version of the show. DARREN RAY (Strings) has been playing with Blue Man Group since 2007 when he helped to open the Blue Man show at Universal Studios in Orlando. IAN PAI (Co-composer and Artistic Collaborator) is Blue Man Group’s original drummer, co-composer and artistic collaborator. He is also the Musical Director and drummer for the art-pop group Fischerspooner. As a composer and musician he has done work for theatre, film, dance, performance and rock in general. He graduated from Pratt Institute with a B.F.A. in Painting.

ANNA K. RAINS (Assistant Stage Manager) hails from Raleigh, NC, and is thrilled to join the BMG tour. Recent work includes North Carolina Theatre: Altar Boyz, The Drowsy Chaperone, Nerds; NC State University Theatre: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, RENT; NCT Conservatory: In The Heights, The Who’s Tommy. MARCUS MILLER (Director) has been with Blue Man Group since 1995. During that time he’s helped create and direct 16 shows with them including the London, Tokyo and Berlin versions. They’re all a little different but this one’s the best. He lives in Brooklyn where he practices telepathy with his pit bull, Brooklyn. His other gig is as a Canadian.

CHRIS WINK, PHILIP STANTON, MATT GOLDMAN (Creators) Longtime friends Chris Wink, Philip Stanton, and Matt Goldman founded Blue Man Group as a way to celebrate the human spirit through music, science, art, and theatre. After giving more than 1,000 performances in New York, the original three Blue Men stepped off-stage to focus on building Blue Man Productions into a successful global creative company. What started as a three-person operation has expanded into a decades-long partnership encompassing live theatre, Grammy Award® -winning original music, two rock concert tours, various children’s educational offerings including the founding of the Blue School, and multiple appearances on major television shows.

JEFF TURLIK (Associate Creative Director) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and shortly thereafter began his life’s journey on the wings of the bird we call music. Through many pathways and skyways he learned and performed, listened and expressed, and lived and loved, occasionally making a little scratch. In Boston, 1999, he began his collaboration with Blue Man Group. He currently resides in New York City. Together they have seen many places around the globe. Shared many experiences. CHRIS DYAS (Artistic and Musical Collaborator) has been performing and writing music with Blue Man Group since 1997. Before that he played in too many bands to mention. His current NYC based project is the Lingering Doubts.

JOEL MORITZ (Production and Lighting Designer). This is Joel’s third Production Design for Blue Man Group which have also included Zurich and one aboard the NCL ship Epic. He has designed lights for Blue Man Group’s international productions in Tokyo, Berlin, Oberhausen, Stuttgart, Amster-dam and Basel as well as at Universal Studios Orlando. Recent New York/Off Broadway work includes productions at: NYTW, Rattlestick, The Public, Ma-Yi, The Culture Project, Rising Phoenix and Juilliard. Joel’s regional theater and opera lighting design has been seen across the nation in theatres such as Arena Stage, Long Wharf, The Shakespeare Theatre, Chicago Opera Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare, Lookingglass Theatre, The Goodman, Steppenwolf and

LARRY HEINEMANN (Artistic and Musical Collaborator) has worked with Blue Man Group since its inception in 1988 in a variety of capacities including musical director, composer, performer, instrument designer, recording engineer and recording producer. What do you love most about Des Moines Performing Arts? The tremendous variety of experiences that I can have there. Also, the people who work at Des Moines Performing Arts are amazing and very good at what they do.

LESLIE FOSHE A season ticket holder for The Dance Series, Leslie decided to become a donor to help ensure that the series can continue its success. Why do you think Des Moines Performing Arts is an important member of the Des Moines community? Every time I come to a show, I like that I see some familiar faces and hundreds of completely new faces. I think Des Moines Performing Arts is important because it brings Des Moines together and gives us great shared experiences.

NICOLE HOCAMP A self-described “theater addict”, Nicole has been a Des Moines Performing Arts donor for 10 years. Nicole is a donor because she wants to make sure the experiences she has here are accessible to new audiences and other theater addicts. What is your favorite Des Moines Performing Arts memory or experience? My favorite Des Moines Performing Arts memory was the backstage tour I got to take. I work at a school and the music teacher arranged for the elementary choir to take a tour. I think I was more excited than the kids to see everything. Summer Theater Camps Offer Stage Experience and Lifelong Skills

Dozens of young people like Konrad will soon have the opportunity to experience Des Moines Performing Arts’ summer theater camps in 2014. Two types of camps are available:

· PERFORMANCE CAMPS – During a weeklong

day camp, young artists ages six to 18 explore their talents and skills as musical theater actors in a production at the Des Moines Civic Center. All participants are guaranteed a role, which is assigned on the first day through an audition process. Young actors rehearse throughout the week with guest artists from the nationally renowned Missoula Children’s Theatre and also participate in workshops devoted to developing acting skills and building an understanding of performing arts.

During last summer’s SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS performance camp, 10-year-old Alejandro Konrad played King Backwards, a royal with a peculiar affliction where he says the opposite of what he means. When asked about his summer theater camp experience with Des Moines Performing Arts, Konrad really meant it when he exclaimed, “Performing on the Civic Center stage, you get this rush that only actors feel. It’s exhilarating!”

· STAGERIGHT BROADWAY EXPERIENCE

Guest Broadway performers lead teens in a weeklong series of master classes on the “triple threat” skills of musical theater - acting, dancing and singing. Teens sharpen their performance skills, gain knowledge about the auditioning and casting process, and learn about the Broadway industry from working professionals.

The STAGEright Broadway Experience culminates with an evening showcase for family and friends. Coloring The World Blue: THE HISTORY OF BLUE MAN GROUP Written by Sheryl Flatow Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton and Chris Wink are entrepreneurs who created and oversee a global enterprise that has brought joy to more than 17 million people. They are also innovators, educators, artists and contemporary comedians, known collectively as the founders and originators of Blue Man Group. That these three bald and blue characters would become a cultural phenomenon â&#x20AC;&#x201C; let alone the foundation for a most dynamic and successful artistic organization â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is an idea that was all but unimaginable when these inscrutable beings first emerged, walking the streets of New York.

“W

e weren’t really goal-oriented,” says Stanton. “When we started walking around the city, we did it because we wanted to see how people reacted. And being bald and blue was our social life. We didn’t want to go to bars and be part of a singles scene, a drinking scene. We wanted our social life to be somehow creative, and this was a lot of fun. We knew we would eventually do some kind of performance, but we never envisioned a commercial theater run.” Blue Man Group’s wildly popular and always evolving theater piece has been a mainstay in New York, Boston and Chicago for years. Now touring the country for the first time, there are also productions in Las Vegas and Orlando, and there are or have been productions in Tokyo and numerous European cities. “It’s all about creativity and innovation,” says Puck Quinn, creative director of character development and appearances. “If someone asks, ‘What does Blue Man Group do?,’ my answer is simple: ‘We innovate.’” Everything begins with the Blue Man, and although he’s been around for more than two decades, his founders still can’t entirely explain where he came from. Like the character himself, his origin is enigmatic. The impulse for going bald and blue emerged, in part, when the three longtime friends observed a clash of cultures on a New York sidewalk that no one else noticed. “We saw three punk rockers – giant Mohawks, safety pins in the cheekbone area, leather and chains – walk between three other gentlemen who were dressed in Armani suits and carrying alligator briefcases,” says Goldman. “These six guys didn’t even blink, and the people around them didn’t even blink. And we turned to each other and said, ‘If that scene didn’t even get one iota of consciousness put to it, what human imagery possibly could?” Eventually, an image began to emerge. “We thought, ‘What would surprise people?” says Stanton. “‘What’s going to catch someone’s eye and make them think?’ We thought that if we created a bald and blue character, that image would have

the ability to surprise and spark some thought for a long time.” Goldman adds, “The first time we got bald and blue, we knew instantly it was something very special. And it was so freeing, because it wasn’t us. Our own egos were gone.” Eager to see an end to the 1980s, they carried around a coffin and staged a “Funeral for the ’80s” in Central Park – two years before the decade ended. “We also walked around the streets or into bars; we were really interested in being a little provocative,” Goldman said. The traits of the Blue Man developed gradually. They built drums and instruments made of polyvinyl chloride – or PVC – pipes. They caught thrown objects with their mouths, and learned how to make things squirt out of their chests. Not all their experiments were successful. “We tried these hats that had tape recorders in them,” says Goldman. “They were called ‘Read Your Mind’ hats.” An acquaintance complimented them for their bravery. They continued to develop material for three years, performing in downtown clubs and event spaces. “We wanted to do work that had never been seen on stage before,” says Goldman. Their shows were fresh and funny, exhilarating and experimental, but they were uncertain how long they could continue; they often paid out more than they took in on a gig. But in 1991, they were invited to perform at La MaMa, the prestigious offoff-Broadway theater. The show created a buzz, and that summer Blue Man Group took part in Lincoln Center’s Serious Fun Festival. In the fall they moved off-Broadway to the Astor Place Theater, where they remain to this day. Two decades later, Goldman, Stanton and Wink are still tinkering with, refining, and updating the show. Each additional production, including the tour, provides an opportunity for new material. “Sometimes we just see something that we think is really cool, and we’ll try and see how we can make it theatrical,” says Stanton. 2010 © Blue Man Group

An ATM is located in the Ticket Office Lobby.

Late seating will be accommodated by House Staff at the earliest appropriate time. Pay attention to lobby chimes, which are sounded five minutes before the show begins, as well as after intermission.

AUDIO DESCRIPTION

The Iowa Radio Reading Information Service for the Blind and Print Handicapped, Inc. (IRIS) offers audio description services for select performances. Call (515) 246-2300 to reserve a listening device.

LISTENING DEVICES

Listening devices are available for use at no charge at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters.

BINOCULARS

Binoculars are available for rent at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters for $5.

LOST ITEMS

Lost items may be reported or claimed at the Nollen Lobby Guest Services Counter during an event. After an event, please contact our Ticket Office at (515) 2462300 or stop by Monday through Friday, 9 am. to 5 p.m. Items are kept for 30 days.

BRAILLE AND LARGE PRINT

Playbills for most Broadway productions are available in Braille at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters, compliments of the lowa Department of the Blind. Large print playbills are also generally available.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

If you have a medical need, please notify the House Staff. Medical services are provided by UnityPoint Health – Des Moines in the Prairie Meadows Lobby.

The use of cameras or any type of recording devices in the Main Hall is prohibited at all times.

Avoid the line at intermission by ordering your drink ahead of time. Order and pay at any open bar before the performance. Pick your drink up at the Nollen or Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counter during intermission.

Please turn your cell phone off or set it to the silent mode. Please also refrain from text messaging and using your phone as a light source during the performance. CHILDREN

Children younger than five years old are typically not permitted in the theater. At designated family-oriented productions, however, children of all ages are permitted. Everyone must have a ticket, regardless of age. A limited number of booster seats are available at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters.
