FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear friends, Welcome to our Willis Broadway Series presentation of Cabaret, one of the iconic Broadway musicals of the 1960s, and certainly one of the best known from the musical team of John Kander and Fred Ebb. This groundbreaking revival of Cabaret was originally produced in 1998 by Roundabout Theater Company in New York and was based on the 1993 revival at the Donmar Warehouse in London. For both the London and New York productions, director Sam Mendes (who today is known for his film work as the director of American Beauty and the last two James Bond films, Skyfall and Spectre) made the show much darker than the original 1966 Broadway production. As Mendes said, “It’s really about the central mystery of the twentieth century—how Hitler could have happened. And it’s important that we go on asking the question whether or not we can find some sort of answer.” For the 1998 revival, the Roundabout Theater transformed the Henry Miller Theater in New York into the “Kit Kat Klub,” replacing standard audience seating with nightclub-style tables. The production later transferred to Studio 54 and ran for six years. We first presented the national tour of this production in Des Moines in October of 2000 as part of the Willis Broadway Series. In March 2014, Roundabout remounted the show again at Studio 54, and we are very pleased to again present the national tour on the stage of the Civic Center. Cabaret is the last production in our five-show Willis Broadway Series season ticket package, and to our 11,500 season ticket holders, please accept our sincere thanks for your support. We look forward to having you renew your seats for the 2016-17 Willis Broadway Series, which will be announced next week on March 8. And we will begin accepting orders for new season tickets the following day. We are pleased to bring the best of Broadway to Central Iowa, and we hope you enjoy this performance of Cabaret.

A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the Kit Kat Club, and to John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff’s seductive masterpiece of a musical, Cabaret. The production you will see today, brought to life by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall (one of the most gifted directorial teams in the business), first slinked onto the Roundabout stage in 1998. The show presented a dark and dazzling vision for the iconic musical, stripping away showbiz sheen and sparkle to reveal an unadorned, visceral core: in the jagged choreography and raw sensuality of this production, we find a story both stark in its judgment and mesmerizing in its empathy. The 1998 production ran on Broadway until 2004 and proved to be a landmark moment in Roundabout’s history. When we had the opportunity to bring the musical to another generation of Broadway theatregoers in 2013, I knew we had to take the plunge; this is a production that deserves to be seen, whether for the first time or for a blissful encore. Following that exceptional second run on Broadway, I am incredibly proud to be sharing this milestone production with a national audience. This season marks Roundabout’s 50th Anniversary as a company, and in this historic year, I cannot think of a better production with which to share our work and mission with you. Since Roundabout’s founding, the company’s

mission has been growing with our audience. Today, our seasons include expert revivals of rarely-seen classic plays like Machinal and The Winslow Boy, joyous reimaginings of timeless American musicals like Anything Goes and She Loves Me, and new works by the playwrights penning the classics of the future. Roundabout is committed to bringing thrilling, high-quality productions to each of our New York stages and to stages throughout the country. As a not-forprofit theatre, we are also dedicated to making these enduring stories accessible to the largest possible audience, through extensive education and audience development programs. Whether you have seen Roundabout’s work in New York or on the road (Cabaret marks our third national tour, following Twelve Angry Men and Anything Goes) or if you are joining us for the first time: thank you. 500,000th Student Attends Applause Series DMPA program continues to impact students and educators across Iowa Half a million is a big number. It is a little less than the metro’s population. It is approximately the number of minutes in a year (thank you RENT for ensuring we all know this)! It is also the number of young theater-goers Des Moines Performing Arts (DMPA) has hosted at our Applause Series over the past 20 years. Soweto Gospel Choir

T

he Applause Series is a cornerstone of DMPA’s education and engagement programs, now serving nearly 56,000 students each year. Our students range from preschoolers to high school seniors, and are bussed in from over 40 Iowa counties. These one-hour matinee performances are tailored for school audiences and connect to in-class curriculum. For many students the Applause Series is their first opportunity to experience a live stage performance. “It’s amazing how the experience of live theater can be lifechanging for some of these young people,” said Karoline Myers, DMPA’s Education Manager. As of our February 23rd performance of ROOM ON THE BROOM, more than 500,000 students and educators have experienced professional top-of-theirindustry performing artists and diverse art forms on DMPA stages. Tickets to these performances are only $1, thanks to generous support from our Donors. “It’s because of our amazing network of Donors that we’re able to reach students of all backgrounds for just $1 a ticket,” said Jeff Chelesvig, President and CEO of DMPA. “Celebrating our 500,000th attendee is really special for us.” For more information on the Applause Series please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org. 52
