FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear friends, Welcome to the Temple Theater! Since opening in October 2002, the Temple Theater has become an important fixture in the live entertainment scene in Central Iowa and a cornerstone of the Western Gateway revitalization. It is undoubtedly one of the best small performance spaces in Des Moines. Des Moines Performing Arts is dedicated to bringing the finest in professional theater and entertainment to our area. We’re very grateful to Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino for supporting our programming. And we especially appreciate the support of our loyal Temple Comedy Series Season Ticket Holders. It’s the support of theater-goers like you that makes this intimate theater a continued success. Enjoy the show!

WELCOME FROM PRAIRIE MEADOWS

Dear Temple Theater guests, Des Moines is alive with cultural events that rival those found in much larger cities across the nation. This is a result, in large part, to the outstanding offerings presented by Des Moines Performing Arts. Your support of this organization and the wonderful productions at the Temple Theater is a testament to the quality of offerings it provides to our community. Prairie Meadows is delighted to partner with Des Moines Performing Arts in bringing you the Prairie Meadows Temple Comedy Series and to contribute to the economic vitality and quality of life in Central Iowa. Along with our commitment to providing financial support to the arts, Prairie Meadows has given more than $1 billion through taxes, grants and charitable donations to the State of Iowa. More than half of that has remained right here in our community to promote economic development, agriculture, jobs and tourism. We look forward to another wonderful season, and we hope you enjoy the show. Sincerely,

Gary Palmer President /CEO Prairie Meadows

A little scribble from Dixie If I was to take a notebook and write down all the good times and adventures I have had in my life, I would clear out a paper factory. Fact is, when someone says, “Hey, I have a crazy idea,” I find it best to respond with “YES.” Sometimes the ideas are stupid, but in the execution, I always tend to learn something in the midst of the adventure. I think that is what I like best about life - the living part. I never can quite understand why some people shy away from having a good time in life and live almost like they are in some kind of plastic bubble. There is so much that this world has to offer and I, for one, don’t want to get to the end of my days and think, crap, I completely forgot to have a good time. To me, when my head hits the pillow each night, I know it was a successful day if I did the following things: - Laughed loud enough so that people stared at me - Flirted just enough with a stranger so that it made him feel good. - Skipped - Said thank you to someone even if they didn’t do a good job - Complimented someone who really needs it - Held the door for someone who doesn’t need it - Called someone to say I was just thinking about them - Stared at the sky and found a cloud that looks like a bedroom accessory - Said I love you to someone and meant it - Said I love you to myself and meant it. Remember your first ride on a mechanical bull, the anticipation and the butterflies? The fear of what you were going to look like. The terror of how the hell you were going to stay on and how badly you’d be banged up if you fell off. That image in your mind of you being able to ride like a rodeo champion and that complete panic of how you were ever going to make the reality match that image in your mind. That’s pretty much what life is. If you aren’t going through all those emotions on a daily basis, you aren’t really living a life that anyone is going to be talking about. In that case, what the hell is the point? If you don’t face every day like you are in the ring with that mechanical bull, then quite frankly, you don’t have much room to be bitching about anything going wrong. Until you get some battle scars, you haven’t really lived a life. Adventure isn’t something you are going to find on your phone or by keeping quiet or by staying home. Adventure is in that ring with that bull. And life happens when you make the decision to climb on top. So if you haven’t taken your ride, I have just one question. What are you waiting for? WHO’S WHO in the CAST DIXIE LONGATE (Star) Just a simple girl from Mobile, Alabama, I never would have thought that stepping on a very small stage at the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival would have catapulted me out of the living room and onto the world stage. I am most known for “Dixie’s Tupperware Party” which went from the Fringe to an off-Broadway production at the Ars Nova Theater in 2007 and garnered the prestigious Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance. I have gone on to do the show in Scotland, London, Australia and Canada as well as in cities all over these fruited plains.

MICHELE HELBERG (Tour Manager) Prior to her time with Dixie, she was the company manager of the Off-Broadway production of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, as well as the associate GM of the Boston, San Francisco and Chicago companies. She served as ACM on Broadway’s Man of La Mancha and the national tour of All Shook Up. Since 2008, she has been happily traveling the world with Dixie Longate and couldn’t be more excited to be around for the next chapter of this adventure. She laughs every single day and thanks the ‘redhead’ for teaching her to have pride in “wearing her own crown”.

And after all that traveling and all those hotel rooms and all those late night Jacuzzi, I have done more running around than a nudist couple stepping on a nest of yellow jackets. And I figured it was high time I shared some of them stories with all y’all. So I’m back to give you some learning, because like my Momma always says, “Even though vodka looks a whole lot like water, the end results are a hell of a lot different.” Trust me, I got a lot of learning to share. Enjoy the show. And thank you to Randy Weeks and John Ekeberg for answering the phone. Yea!

LISA ORZOLEK (Scenic Designer) is delighted to be designing Dixie’s Tube Top. Past designs for DCA include Love…Perfect… Change, Five Course Love, the original Girls Only (Denver, Des Moines, Winnipeg, and Charlotte), The Taffetas and My Way. Lisa is the Director of Scenic Design for the Denver Center Theatre Company where she was overseen or assisted on the designs for more than 200 productions in 21 seasons. Design credits for the DCTC include Shadowlands, Death of a Salesman, The Great Wall Story, The Liar, Superior Donuts, Othello, The Pillowman, and more. Other local Denver designs include, the Colorado Shakespeare Festival’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, and Richard II. A Denver native, Lisa has a BFA in Scenic Design from Boston University.

KRIS ANDERSSON (Playwright) Andersson has been making people laugh since 2004 when he first penned the award-winning “Dixie’s Tupperware Party” for the New York International Fringe Festival. Since then, that show has gone on to play 5 different countries and has become one of the longest-running off-Broadway tours of the last decade. His follow up shows include Broken Shit and Baby Jesus, No Instructions and My Bags Went Where? for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Tonight’s show marks the 5th collaboration with Dixie Longate. Thank you to DCPA for your faith and encouragement.

CHARLES R. MACLEOD (Lighting Designer) For Denver Center Attractions, past design credits include Love… Perfect… Change, Girls Only (Denver, Des Moines, Winnipeg, and Charlotte), The Taffetas, My Way, The Last Five Years, and Always… Patsy Cline. Mr. MacLeod has been the resident Lighting Designer for the Denver Center Theatre Company since 1987. Past DCTC credits include Jackie & 7

One day RANDY WEEKS said, “Why don’t you write a play and we’ll do it. I trust you.” The result is what brings us all together tonight. Randy was one of the rare people in this business who remembered why they call it a “PLAY.” Your exit from the stage was far too early.
