From the President & CEO

Dear Friends, Next month, my senior class of 1976 from Belmond High School in north central Iowa will gather for our 40th class reunion. And reflecting back on my time in high school, there is no doubt that the highlight for me were the times working on the musicals we produced every other year. During my sophomore year, I was on the lighting crew for The Music Man, and in my senior year, I played the role of Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, which to this day remains the only time that I have appeared on stage in a play. The memories of putting together those shows truly have lasted a lifetime. And for me, it was the impetus that has led to a career in theater, for which I am extremely grateful. Tonight we celebrate the commitment and hard work of high school students from across our state as we present the fourth annual Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase. This event is the culmination of a year of work, including the adjudicating of all the shows produced by participating schools, providing workshops for advancing excellence in the various elements of production, and of course, the showcase itself. We are grateful to the donors who make contributions specifically for the Iowa High School Musical Awards, as their support is essential to the program’s success. Thank you. We are thankful to our artistic team, guest artists, adjudicators and staff members from Des Moines Performing Arts for their work on this important program, especially Sarah Bannon, our Community Programs Coordinator, who does an amazing job of coordinating all of the elements. Lastly, we thank the students, teachers, and volunteers from across Iowa for their dedication and for sharing their talents in their respective high school musicals. Tonight we celebrate YOUR success – congratulations!

About the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, presented by Des Moines Performing Arts, is an education-based program that provides support for high school musical theater programs and highlights the importance of arts education. For 2015-2016, all high schools within a 125-mile radius from Des Moines Performing Arts were invited to participate. The program consists of three parts: Adjudication Process Throughout the year, panels of theater professionals and educators attend and review each participating school’s musical production. Students and directors receive valuable feedback that can be used to grow and strengthen their future work. Learning Opportunities Special learning opportunities, including technical workshops and master classes with visiting Broadway artists, are offered to help students and directors strengthen their craft and understanding of musical theater. Awards And Recognition Based on scores and nominations, schools and students receive recognition that honor their achievements in categories such as choreography, design, principal role and overall musical production. The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards is designed to be celebratory rather than competitive in nature. Any student or school at an outstanding level is recognized for their achievement. Multiple recipients may be named in each category as performances merit. The year culminates in a professionally produced Awards Showcase at the Des Moines Civic Center. The event features student performances and the opportunity for students to collaborate with guest Broadway professionals.

Deliver a Range of Learning Opportunities T

hroughout the year, the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards works with professional theater artists to provide skillbuilding opportunities for students and educators. This year, topics included stage management, set design, movement, wardrobe, and vocal performance.

The workshops often allow students to work directly with national talent appearing on the Civic Center stage. This year, opportunities included a vocal master class led by two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster and a behind-the-scenes costume workshop with A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER. These opportunities elevate students’ understanding of the many facets of musical theater and help them further develop their craft.

Triple Threat Award Sponsor

“The performing arts can be a powerful force for change in our society by allowing a wide audience to ‘go places’ and ‘meet people’ otherwise not available to them, to acquaint us with other cultures and traditions and even our own history in an engaging and immediate way that no other medium can achieve and to do that in a shared experience which is ‘LIVE THEATER’. Appearing on stage for all to see can be an exhilarating experience filled with potential while fraught with risk - not a venture for the faint of heart but only for the courageous and committed. Thank you for your dedication and best of luck to you all.”

- Doug and Debbie West

We are thrilled

and honored to be sponsors of the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards — a unique opportunity for our gifted youth to be able to perform on this stage that has witnessed so much talent. Our wish is for the students to perform to their highest potential and to take away a renewed sense of accomplishment along with tools to advance their craft. We are proud of you.
