FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear friends, From 1943 to 1959, composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II created nine musicals for the Broadway stage. Of those, their “Big Five” – Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music – are still among the most-performed musicals on amateur and professional stages. In fact, the current Broadway production of The King and I just won four 2015 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. All of the Big Five musicals were turned into movies, including the beloved The Sound of Music, released 50 years ago. Rodgers and Hammerstein also created one musical specifically for film and one for television. In 1945, they adapted Phil Stong’s novel State Fair. We welcomed the pre-Broadway premiere here at the Civic Center during the 1995 Iowa State Fair. In 1957, Julie Andrews became an overnight sensation in Broadway’s My Fair Lady. Soon after, Andrews’ agent approached Rodgers and Hammerstein to adapt the folk tale of Cinderella into a television musical. Live telecasts of musicals were common, but they were almost always adaptations of existing Broadway shows. In this case, the team wrote the musical specifically for television, and the one-time-only live broadcast of Cinderella played to TV’s largest audience to that date – 107 million viewers (60% of the country). CBS restaged the production in 1965 with Lesley Ann Warren as Cinderella. ABC brought Cinderella back to life in 1997 as well with pop singer Brandy Norwood in the title role. A few years ago, the Rodgers and Hammerstein organization approached producer Robyn Goodman about a first-ever Broadway adaptation of Cinderella. She turned to writer Douglas Carter Beane to adapt the 90-minute television musical into a fully-realized stage musical. Beane pulled some songs from other R+H musicals to fill out the score (the same was done for State Fair). Goodman hired brilliant creatives, including the incomparable William Ivey Long, who designed 330 costumes for this production. The Broadway version of Cinderella opened on March 3, 2013, and we are so pleased to present the national tour of this lavish production as part of our Willis Broadway Series. Please enjoy Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella.

RICHARD RODGERS + OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Music, Lyrics & Original Book). After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in the early ’40s to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Oklahoma! (1943), the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’ sophisticated style of musical comedy (which he had perfected in a 25-year partnership with lyricist Lorenz Hart) with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta (conceived in collaboration with such composers as Sigmund Romberg, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Jerome Kern). Over the next 16 years, R&H wrote eight more Broadway musicals: Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music. They wrote one movie musical, State Fair, subsequently adapted to the stage, and one for television, “Cinderella.” First broadcast live with Julie Andrews in 1957, remade with Lesley Ann Warren (1965), and again with Whitney Houston and Brandy (1997), R&H’s Cinderella made her Broadway debut in 2013.

Creating the Magical World of

ow do you create a magical world for Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella? William Ivey Long, who won the Tony Award for his costumes for the show, says you have to think of it as a period piece: “It’s a fairy tale. In fact, that’s the period: fairy tale.” Long has designed 330 sumptuous period costumes for Cinderella, which is presented in Anna Louizos’ equally sumptuous forest-inspired setting. “The scale of this show is big, because it’s a grand fairy tale,” says Louizos. “This is not story-theater. It’s a Broadway show.”

“And when you start with the forest, that means everything’s growing, and flora and fauna, and so, by extension, butterflies and moths.”

Both designers say they had long discussions with director Mark Brokaw for this revisionist telling of the traditional story, which features Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic songs with a cheeky new script by playwright Douglas Carter Beane. “Mark wanted to create a whole new world that was unique to this production,” says Louizos. “Nature was very important; the thought that we would see Cinderella in the forest became a prominent component of the design.”

Of course, butterflies and moths transform from caterpillars, and transformation is a big theme in Cinderella. Long has designed jaw-dropping costume changes in both acts, where Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother go from rags to ball gowns in the blink of an eye, right in front of the audience. How are these So, Louizos quite literally changes accomplished? brought Cinderella into Long won’t say: “I would the woods. The trees that form the arches are kind of a silvery brown.” Anna Louizos thinks this version of William Ivey Long’s costumes – which reference medieval knights, the Flemish painter Breughel and the French court of Catherine de Medici – are also inspired by nature. “The whole world of Cinderella takes place in the forest,” he says, showing costume sketches.

Cinderella is a fairy tale that will appeal to everyone: “We approached it as any other brand new musical. It’s not a children’s show; it’s a Broadway show that adults should be able to appreciate and enjoy and be entertained just as much as children would.”

Des Moines Students Experience Disney’s The Lion King

O

n May 14, more than 500 5th and 6th graders from five Des Moines schools – Cattell, Findley, Madison, Oak Park and Harding – attended Disney’s The Lion King at the Des Moines Civic Center. This special field trip was the culmination of weeks of arts learning activities – from mask-making to dance – inspired by The Lion King.

The project, called One by One: Laying a Foundation of Learning through the Arts, served the five Des Moines schools participating in the President’s Committee on Arts and Humanities’ Turnaround Arts Initiative, a national arts education program to help boost academic performance in schools with high needs. Des Moines is one of six sites in the nation participating in Turnaround Arts. Support from Des Moines Performing Arts Donors, Des Moines Public Schools and The Broadway League provided the experience to students at no cost. For most of the students, it was their first opportunity to see a Broadway show. For many, like 6th grade student Aime, the result was transformative. “Because of you, I got to see The Lion King as a play,” she shared. “The Lion King lives in me. The Civic Center lives in me.”
