FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear friends, The story of Eva Perón is fascinating. Her story is that of a girl from rural Argentina who rapidly became one of the most powerful and beloved women in her country before her fabled death in 1952 at the age of 33. It was her unlikely story that captured the attention of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, who released a “concept” album of their musical about Perón entitled Evita in 1976. The pair had successfully launched Jesus Christ Superstar in the same way, and Evita eventually led to the first staged production of the show in London in 1978, directed by Harold Prince. The 1979 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, and spawned no less than three U.S. tours. Eight years ago, Evita received a major London revival. I was in the U.K. at the time, and I was thrilled to attend the first preview performance of the work in June 2006. We are pleased to present the national tour of this new production of Evita as the first offering in the 2014-15 Willis Broadway Series. Directed by Michael Grandage, this new production presents a more authentic look at the story of Eva Perón while still paying homage to the iconic moments of the musical. The choreography by Rob Ashford incorporates tango into the show’s dances, and Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Cullen reorchestrated the musical to give it a more Latin sound. The most notable change, however, is that the narrator of the musical is not Che Guevara, as the role was conceived by Harold Prince in the original production. Instead, the character Che returns to the role of an everyman, a voice of the people, as the role was conceived for the concept album. If you haven’t already, there is still time to purchase Season Tickets for the 2014-2015 Willis Broadway Series. When you buy the 5-Show Package, you get the best seats at the best prices with lots of great benefits! Welcome to the Des Moines Civic Center, and please enjoy this performance of Evita.

FROM THE CHAIR
Dear friends, Welcome to the Des Moines Civic Center and to the Willis Broadway Series. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our loyal Season Ticket Holders and to our Donors whose generous gifts are the foundation for all we do. We truly appreciate your support. In addition to the Willis Broadway Series, Des Moines Performing Arts presents The Dance Series, the Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series, and three offerings within the Prairie Meadows Temple Theater Series – the Temple Comedy Series, Live at the Temple and Lunch Unplugged. The staff and board take great pride in making our four venues performance homes for our entire community, including the Des Moines Symphony. To embrace our roots, we welcome local artists, dance studios, students and more onto our stages each year. Des Moines Performing Arts is also a national leader in theater and arts education. More than 50,000 students attend curriculum-connected performances in our facilities each year. Teachers learn to incorporate the arts into traditional classroom topics. The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards program is elevating and showcasing the work of high schools and their students. As a non-profit organization, Des Moines Performing Arts requires your help to make all of this happen. We ask for your support as a donor and appreciate your help in creating a world-class performing arts center. To learn more about attending any of our performances or about making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call (515) 246-2300. Thank you for being here. Enjoy the show!

T
he musical partnership of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sir Tim Rice has produced some of musical theater’s most popular shows, including the iconic Evita. The duo formed when at the age of 21, Sir Tim wrote to Sir Andrew, then 17, describing himself as a “with-it” writer of lyrics who wondered if the young composer would consider it “worth his while” to meet him. Their collaborations produced some of musical theater’s great works.
Before Evita was even a spark of an idea, the team’s first work was on a musical called The Likes of Us in 1965. After their initial collaboration, Rice wanted to work on pop songs and Webber wished to create another musical. The pair was approached to create an end-of-theterm religious concert for a school which

The pair stayed with the biblical theme and produced the rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar in 1969. Initially created as a concept album, the musical received its first staging in 1971. The concept for Superstar combines the musical flavors of rock with the style of opera, as the entire show is told in song. Evita is also considered a “rock opera” for that reason. The inspiration for Evita began with a radio play about Eva Perón Sir Tim heard while driving in his car and a documentary called Queen of Hearts which aired in the UK in 1972. As with Jesus Christ Superstar, the pair first released a concept album of the sungthrough musical in 1976. Evita’s anthem “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” (sung by Julie Covington) became a number one hit. It opened in the West End in 1978 starring pop singer David Essex in the “narrator” role of Che and Elaine Paige in the title role. Almost overnight Paige became a star and the show was a soldout sensation.

would later, through album conceptions and multiple stagings, become Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Joseph premiered in London’s West End in 1973 and on Broadway in 1982.
Its later Broadway reception, with Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin, was also stellar and the show garnered seven Tony Awards®. After nearly 20 years of planning and negotiations, a film of the musical graced the silver screen in 1996 starring Antonio Banderas and Madonna. Evita lives on in this new tour, following a successful revival run on Broadway.

A NEW CHANDELIER
By Cameron Mackintosh, Producer of The Phantom of the Opera
O
ver the last 30 years, Phantom has become the most phenomenal success of all time, breaking box office records worldwide in countless sell-out productions. Since 1986, only the original version has been presented around the world (with the exception of Poland and Hungary which were non-replica productions) and its brilliant design by Maria Björnson has become synonymous with Andrew’s sensational score. Just before Maria died at a tragically early age she and I had started discussing a different set design, one that would do more to contrast the Phantom’s darker backstage world with that of the traditional opera world on stage.
was a daunting but invigorating task. Joining Paul Brown, my choice of director was always going to be Laurence Connor Cameron Mackintosh who I first met when he became the associate director on the London production of Phantom. Since then he has directed acclaimed versions of Miss Saigon and Oliver!, and co-directed the hugely successful new production of Les Misérables. He also recently staged the triumphant 25th Anniversary production of Phantom at the Royal Albert Hall. As choreographer, we both wanted to work with Matthew Bourne’s talented protégé, Scott Ambler, who I had first worked with on My Fair Lady a few years ago. To light the show we are lucky enough to have one of the world’s greatest lighting designers, Paule Constable, and to create the sound, the incomparable Mick Potter. Maria still remains at the heart of the new Phantom with her glorious costumes, some of which are designs found in her archive that she created for the original and were never used.
Andrew agreed with my proposal, that it was time to give Phantom a fresh look, so in 2008 I approached theatre and opera designer Paul Brown to see if he was interested in taking over the baton from Maria to bring his own style and vision to our notion. It turned out that Maria had a special place in Paul’s life as at the beginning of his career he had been a young assistant to her at the Royal Opera House. The result of Paul’s long-developed ideas for this project is a new version of Phantom that uses a more visceral dramatic approach to create a visual feast, giving audiences the chance to see their favourite musical all over again through new eyes.
For the American production we have been able to build on our British success and finetune some of the staging, including making the famous chandelier even more spectacular. We all believe that you will fall in love with the music of the night all over again, as the Phantom is reborn for the 21st Century.
Putting together the rest of the new creative team for this Phantom, following in the footsteps of Hal Prince and Gillian Lynne, 43

Young Artists Explore Theater Talents at Des Moines Performing Arts’ Summer Camps
The Des Moines Civic Center was buzzing with activity this summer. Dozens of young theater artists ages six to 18 participated in four camps during the fifth season of Des Moines Performing Arts’ summer camps. Guest artists from Missoula Children’s Theatre and Broadway worked closely with the campers on developing their theater talents, as well as helped them rehearse their roles in productions at the end of camp. Check out the fun from three of the camps!

tudents of a teacher at Aplington Elementary School have been getting the star treatment, so to speak.
After a trip to New York City in 2007, third-grade teacher Brian Sammons contacted a Broadway star out of the blue, asking if she would exchange letters with his students.
Actress Hayley Podschun
Sammons’ class sent her a package filled with handwritten letters from students and a disposable camera hoping Podschun would send back photos of New York City.
“I was so happy to do it and honored that he picked me,” said Podschun in a phone interview with The Courier.
“I’m sure people thought I was a little crazy,” Sammons said. Actress Hayley Podschun, pronounced “pet-tune,” responded right away. She starred as Glinda, the good witch, in a national tour of the hit Broadway show
Sammons wanted to incorporate elements of the fine arts into daily lesson plans, often drawing on themes

from whatever show Podschun was rehearsing. She starred in Sunday in the Park with George, a musical by Stephen Sondheim inspired by a George Seurat painting. Next thing Podschun knew, her mailbox was full of pointillist paintings created by Sammons’ students. “It’s just neat to expand their minds,” Podschun said. On Monday, Sammons’ efforts were recognized with The Broadway League Educator Apple Award.

get excited. I use that connection to motivate students in all my subjects.” After years of writing, emailing and video chatting, Sammons brought a group of about 40 students to meet Podschun when Wicked hit Des Moines. A grant from the Iowa Arts Council paid for the trip and, by a stroke of good fortune, the kids got complimentary matinee tickets.
“It really is a reflection of the folks that I work with and the kids,” Sammons said. Sammons found his star-struck students respond much more enthusiastically if he crafts a mathematics story problem around Podschun’s life. For example: Podschun has to make rehearsal across town in New York City in 45 minute or she will be late. Which subway routes does she take to get there on time?
“Brian is a teacher who exemplifies being a lifelong learner and bettering his knowledge and skills as an educator to bring exceptional opportunities for learning to his students,” said Amy May, elementary principal for AplingtonParkersburg schools.
“Sometimes math lessons don’t go well at all but all I had to do was put Hayley into the problem solving and you’ve got their attention,” Sammons said. “They are inspired by her and

A Local Company. A Plan for the Future. A Dream.
“
Last year, we moved back home and bought the local nursery. Our banker advised us to find a CPA. We did. Our CPA helped us develop a business plan and get a loan. Then, she helped us set up a payroll system, a retirement plan, and everything in between.
It’s your dream. You think about it all the time. Some might call it an obsession, but it’s your dream and you are going to make it happen. Making your dream a reality won’t happen overnight. But, a CPA is the perfect partner to help put it into action. CPAs listen to your ideas and give solid direction to help you build your future and achieve the things that matter most to you. Call your CPA or locate a member of the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants at FindAnIowaCPA.com. Because your dream is worth achieving.
