FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear friends, Welcome to the Des Moines Civic Center and to our Willis Broadway Series presentation of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. One of the earliest collaborations between composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, Joseph is drawn from the Bible. It tells the story of Jacob’s son Joseph, who is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and then rises to be one of the most powerful men in Egypt. The musical was first written by the duo in 1968 as a 15-minute cantata for a prep school in London. It was subsequently produced as a stage production on London’s West End in 1973 following the pair’s success with their musical Jesus Christ Superstar. The first Broadway production was in 1982, and since that time there have been multiple national tours, including engagements here at the Civic Center in 1995, 1996 and 2004. For the past 18 years, Des Moines Performing Arts has been a member of the Independent Presenters Network (IPN), a consortium of 40 member organizations that regularly invests in Broadway productions. While we have served as a producer of various Broadway shows and tours, this production of Joseph marks the very first time the IPN has been the lead producer on a show. The IPN provided all of the funding for the production and worked closely with our partners at Troika Entertainment to put together the terrific creative team and cast. We are incredibly thrilled to be presenting the show in Des Moines. The Willis Broadway Series is a cornerstone of our programming at Des Moines Performing Arts, and we are grateful to our more than 11,000 Season Ticket Holders for their commitment to the series. Welcome to the Civic Center, and we hope that you enjoy our production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

FROM THE CHAIR
Dear friends, Welcome! We are so pleased that you are with us. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our Willis Broadway Series Season Ticket Holders and Donors. Your interest, patronage and generosity build the foundation for all we do. Des Moines Performing Arts is the non-profit organization that operates the Des Moines Civic Center, Stoner Theater, Temple Theater and Cowles Commons. At these venues, you will find an extensive range of high-quality live, professional performing arts. The world’s top dance companies perform in The Dance Series. The Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series offers an ideal introduction to theater and the arts for families and children. The Prairie Meadows Temple Comedy Series brings laughs and creative theater performances to the Temple Theater, a space that is also the home to the Prairie Meadows Live at the Temple Concert Series. Des Moines Performing Arts also offers highly impactful educational programs. The Applause Series offers $1 tickets to every one of the more than 54,000 students and teachers who come to its performances annually. Professional development programs provide teachers with new strategies for the classroom. And, I hope you will mark your calendar for June 1, 2015, when we celebrate the work of Iowa’s talented young people and their committed instructors at the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase. All of these programs require donations to operate successfully. I invite you to join us in our mission by becoming a Donor. Your gift will impact many, as will the opportunities for you to explore everything that is Des Moines Performing Arts. To learn more about attending any of our performances or making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call (515) 246-2300. Enjoy the show!

Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo
A Q&A with the Touring Couple
A
ce Young and Diana DeGarmo are both alums of American Idol, and they were both in the Broadway production of Hair. Here’s another fun fact: they’re a reallife married couple! And they’ve been touring the country together in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat since March. Describe a day in the life of a musical tour star.
How does doing Joseph compare to American Idol on tour?
On tour or on Broadway we have eight shows a week, no matter what. The biggest difference on a tour is that we get to be tourists in our off time. It’s awesome! We are traveling to the biggest cities in the country and we get to take in all their food and culture.
Completely opposite. The Idol tour was a ’one and done’ type of tour. We would do one show and then travel that night to the next city. We didn’t get to take in any part of any city. The only way we knew where we were was by reading the city name taped to the backstage stairs as we started each show. 38

Our Joseph National Tour is in each city for one to three weeks at a time. We have almost 50 people traveling with the tour at all times and we get to meet locals in each theater (dressers, stagehands, theater executives, etc). Our show is art every night. I am blown away with how seamlessly we all work together creating every moment of the show. Our director/choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler has created a new and fresh Joseph – keeping the songs you love, while pushing the creative limits of dancing, acting, singing, lighting and staging.
amazing to see such beautiful places that are built for a HUGE crowd and acoustics.
What’s been the most challenging aspect for you while on tour, as artists and as a couple?
We have our pre-show rituals. There’s nothing crazy – just warming up our bodies and voices. This show uses every ounce of energy you thought you had. We make sure to get enough sleep and good food in order to stay healthy for our eight-show weeks.
What’s been the most bizarre fan reaction/gift? Ever since our Idol tour days, there’s nothing too shocking. We really appreciate our fans. We are happy to say ‘hello’ at the stage door after our shows. This tour we have received everything from clothing and food to framed posters. The best thing is meeting people who have seen the show.
Have you developed any rituals, bad habits, etc. while on tour?
We just celebrated our first year of marriage and we couldn’t be happier! We love working together. We met more than four years ago working on the Broadway revival of Hair. Now being on the road, we get to write music and be creative in our off-time. It’s nice to let our song ideas grow while we are on the road, that way we can record them when we are home in Nashville during our tour breaks.
What do you do to relax between shows? We love HGTV! We are in the nesting phase, so we want to remodel every room in our house. Haha!
Which musical would you guys like to star in next, given the chance?
Which venue are you looking forward to performing in and why?
We want to be part of creating something new…
Every theater has its history. We love that! This was our first time performing at the Pantages Theater in LA. That one has been on our bucket list for some time. But, truly we look forward to every theater. It’s pretty
Only time will tell what the Young-DeGarmo duo will do next, but for now – they are lighting up the stage in the amazing new Joseph! 39

A Round of Applause for the Applause Series
Stella, Queen of the Snow
D
iscovering the magic of winter. Astounding acrobatic feats. Stories and music about the Latino world. These are just some of the diverse experiences thousands of Iowa students and educators will share this school year through the Applause Series. Now in its nineteenth season, the Applause Series features professional touring productions for students ranging from prekindergarten to twelfth grade. Each performance connects to classroom curriculum areas such as history, literature and science, providing the perfect opportunity to learn about and through the arts. “The excitement in the theater on an Applause Series day is unbelievable,” said Des Moines Performing Arts The Peking Education Manager Karoline Acrobats Myers. “Students have been preparing for the show for weeks in class, and for many, it is the first live performance they’ve ever attended.” Exposing students to the performing arts while also delivering academic content makes the Applause Series an easy decision for schools, and educator enthusiasm for the program is at an all-time high. As of this writing, more than 54,100 tickets have been reserved for this season’s Applause Series, which already breaks last season’s record of 53,060 tickets. Tickets cost just $1, thanks to generous donations that subsidize the actual cost of each ticket, which is more than $6.

New Mobile Site Creates Easy Navigation & Paperless Ticketing for Smartphone Users
D
es Moines Performing Arts has a new tool in its digital toolbox! Earlier this fall, we launched a mobile-friendly site for users to get show information and purchase tickets on their smartphones. “Nearly 42 percent of online traffic to DesMoinesPerformingArts.org comes from mobile devices, with 70 percent of those users checking out our site using smartphones,” said Greg Votava, Des Moines Performing Arts Digital Marketing Manager.“ These numbers will only continue to rise, so it made sense to create a mobile site that was easy to navigate on smartphones.” Easy navigation is not the only exciting feature of the mobile site. The ticketing process for smartphone users is paperless. Tickets can be purchased from the mobile site and then scanned directly from the ticket buyers’ smartphones when they attend a show at the Des Moines Civic Center, Stoner Theater or Temple Theater. If you have a smartphone, be sure to visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org and navigate our new mobile site!
Stay connected with Des Moines Performing Arts! Using our digital tools is the best way to get show information and tickets. You can also get Des Moines Performing Arts updates by signing up for our Email Club at DesMoinesPerformingArts.org.

A Local Company. A Plan for the Future. A Dream.
“
Last year, we moved back home and bought the local nursery. Our banker advised us to find a CPA. We did. Our CPA helped us develop a business plan and get a loan. Then, she helped us set up a payroll system, a retirement plan, and everything in between.
It’s your dream. You think about it all the time. Some might call it an obsession, but it’s your dream and you are going to make it happen. Making your dream a reality won’t happen overnight. But, a CPA is the perfect partner to help put it into action. CPAs listen to your ideas and give solid direction to help you build your future and achieve the things that matter most to you. Call your CPA or locate a member of the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants at FindAnIowaCPA.com. Because your dream is worth achieving.
