FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear friends, While there are thousands of record labels in the U.S., there is really only one whose name is synonymous with its unique sound as well as the city in which it was founded. That label is Motown. Founded by Berry Gordy in his hometown of Detroit in 1958, Motown Records served as a recording mecca for African-American performers at a time when black artists faced immense obstacles in the entertainment world. Motown became a place where black performers were nurtured. At a time when music was largely segregated, Motown began selling records to all people and was at the center of the integration of pop music in America. The story of Berry Gordy, the Motown sound and their music is the essence of our Willis Broadway Series presentation of Motown The Musical. In fact, Gordy wrote the book of the musical, which he based on his 1994 autobiography “To Be Loved,” and also produced the musical in New York and the national tour you’re about to see. The backbone of this show is the music. The production contains more than 50 hits from the fabulous Motown catalog, many of them standards in the pop world that continue to sound as fresh and fun as when they were recorded, mostly during Motown’s golden era of the 1960s and ’70s. Throughout Motown’s history, Gordy remained the driving force for the label and was the consummate manager and promoter of his artists. In fact, when I met Berry Gordy in New York shortly after the opening of Motown, he remembered musical tours to Des Moines and correctly recalled the biggest radio stations in the market. Motown The Musical is a high-energy show, and we hope you enjoy it. Our Willis Broadway Series continues at the Civic Center in January with the return of The Book of Mormon. From all of us at Des Moines Performing Arts, we wish you happy holidays and a safe and prosperous new year.

FROM THE CHAIR

Dear friends, Welcome! We are so pleased that you are with us. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our Willis Broadway Series Season Ticket Holders and Donors. Your interest, patronage and generosity build the foundation for all we do. Des Moines Performing Arts is the non-profit organization that operates the Des Moines Civic Center, Stoner Theater, Temple Theater and Cowles Commons. At these venues, you will find an extensive range of high-quality live, professional performing arts. The world’s top dance companies perform in The Dance Series. The Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series offers an ideal introduction to theater and the arts for families and children. The Prairie Meadows Temple Comedy Series brings laughs and creative theater performances to the Temple Theater, a space that is also the home to the Prairie Meadows Live at the Temple Concert Series. Des Moines Performing Arts also offers highly impactful educational programs. The Applause Series offers $1 tickets to every one of the more than 54,000 students and teachers who come to its performances annually. Professional development programs provide teachers with new strategies for the classroom. And, I hope you will mark your calendar for June 1, 2015, when we celebrate the work of Iowa’s talented young people and their committed instructors at the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase. All of these programs require donations to operate successfully. I invite you to join us in our mission by becoming a Donor. Your gift will impact many, as will the opportunities for you to explore everything that is Des Moines Performing Arts. To learn more about attending any of our performances or making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call (515) 246-2300. Enjoy the show!

MOTOWN THE MUSICAL:

Berry Gordy In His Own Words The history of Motown and its contributions to the cultural landscape of the United States is a compelling story. Here’s the story from Berry Gordy’s point of view.

On Motown’s Rise to the Top I am often asked, “How did you do it? How did you make it work at a time when so many barriers existed for black people and black music?” There are many answers to those questions but at the base of them is atmosphere. Hitsville had an atmosphere that allowed people to experiment creatively and gave them the courage not to be afraid to make mistakes. In fact, I sometimes encouraged mistakes. Everything starts as an idea and as far as I was concerned there were no stupid ones. “Stupid” ideas are what created the light bulb, airplanes and the like. . . . It was an atmosphere that made you feel no matter how high your goals, they were reachable, no matter who you were. I had always figured that less than 1 percent of all the people in the world reach their full potential. Seeing that potential in others, I realized that by helping them reach theirs, maybe I could reach mine.

Obstacles Faced by Black Artists Prior to Motown The biggest obstacle faced by talented black artists was having a place to go – a record company where they would be accepted, where the records would be distributed, get played, and where they would get paid. Another obstacle was an artist having access to great material and great production in order to get a hit record. Photo by Kal Lee

From Songwriter to Publisher and Producer

Rhythm and Blues, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Pop. When I started out, I wanted music for all people. When I went to the white radio stations to Songwriting was my love, and protecting get my records played, they would laugh that love, in many ways, was the motivation at me. They thought I was trying to bring for everything I did in the early years of black music to white my career. Producing people, to “cross over,” the artists who sang and I said, “Wait a my songs was the minute; it’s not really next logical step to black music. It’s music making sure my songs by black stars.” I refused were done the way to be categorized. They I wanted. Publishing called my music all came about when kinds of stuff: Rhythm I couldn’t get my and Blues, Soul. And I songwriters’ royalties said, “Look, my music from a New York is Pop. Pop means publisher. Protecting popular. If you sell a my songs was also million records, you’re the reason I got popular.” And that’s into publishing and what we did. White eventually the record stations in Detroit and business. Berry Gordy founded the Motown Record then white stations Corporation in 1959. everywhere starting How Working at an Photo Courtesy of West Grand Media playing our records. Automobile Plant Our music became the Influenced His soundtrack of people’s lives for people all Approach to Motown around the world who love this music. At the plant the cars started out as just a frame, pulled along on conveyor belts until On Reaching White Audiences they emerged at the end of the line – brand We released some of our early albums spanking new cars rolling off the line. I without showing the artists’ faces on them. wanted the same concept for my company, The Marvelettes’ album Please Mr. Postman only with artists and songs and records. I had a picture of a mailbox on it; Bye Bye wanted a place where a kid off the street Baby by Mary Wells, a love letter. We put could walk in one door an unknown and a cartoon of an ape on the cover of The come out another a recording artist – a star. Miracles’ Doin’ Mickey’s Monkey; and an Isley Brothers album had two white lovers at the How Motown Began Making Inroads beach on its cover. and Eventually Changed the Culture

at “White” Stations

This practice became less necessary as our music’s popularity started overcoming the prejudices.

Most black artists, I feel, were ignored because of segregation and the music industry’s blatant pigeon-holing of artists – 45

A Local Company. A Plan for the Future. A Dream.

Last year, we moved back home and bought the local nursery. Our banker advised us to find a CPA. We did. Our CPA helped us develop a business plan and get a loan. Then, she helped us set up a payroll system, a retirement plan, and everything in between.

It’s your dream. You think about it all the time. Some might call it an obsession, but it’s your dream and you are going to make it happen. Making your dream a reality won’t happen overnight. But, a CPA is the perfect partner to help put it into action. CPAs listen to your ideas and give solid direction to help you build your future and achieve the things that matter most to you. Call your CPA or locate a member of the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants at FindAnIowaCPA.com. Because your dream is worth achieving.
