FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear friends, Although I do not watch a lot of television, one of my guilty pleasures is watching vintage movies on the Turner Classic Movies channel. And several years ago I caught on TCM a delightful 1949 British comedy entitled Kind Hearts and Coronets. In the film, a young man in Edwardian England learns that he is ninth in line to being the duke of his mother’s family. And in order to take claim to the title and the family fortune, he vows to systematically “knock off” the other eight heirs, all played in the film by the wonderful actor Alec Guinness. And a few years later I was sitting in the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York for a performance of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and thought that the plot of the musical seemed familiar. And indeed, the Kind Hearts film and the musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder were both based on the same 1907 book by English author Roy Horniman. Simply put, A Gentlemen’s Guide is a delightful musical – charming, clever and very funny. Fans of the PBS series “Downton Abbey” will no doubt recognize the fashions and extravagance of the Edwardian Era in which the musical is set, but the comedy is timeless. And like the film, the musical utilizes the talents of one actor to play the eight eventually doomed members of the D’Ysquith family. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder won four Tony Awards in 2014, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Direction, and Best Costume Design. And we are delighted to present the National Tour of the show as an offering in our Willis Broadway Series. We are grateful to our season ticket holders for your support, as it allows us to bring the best of Broadway to central Iowa. And we hope you enjoy this performance of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder:

Darko Tresnjak, made their Broadway debuts with Gentleman’s Guide, which Charles Isherwood, in The New York Times, called “inspired and hilarious.” The plot, loosely based on a 1907 novel by Roy Horniman, which also served as the inspiration for the film comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, concerns a penniless young man named Monty Navarro who discovers that he is the ninth in line to become Kristen Beth Williams as Sibella the Earl of Highhurst. Since Hallward and Kevin Massey as the aristocratic family, the Monty Navarro in a scene from A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder. D’Ysquiths, disinherited his deceased mother and Both Lutvak and Freedman, denies his existence, Monty takes matters who met in 1981 at NYU’s Graduate Musical into his own hands; he knocks off each of Theatre Writing Program, and director his relatives, one by one, in outrageously hen the Tony Awards were handed out in June of 2014, the stylishly comic musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, took home four trophies, including the biggest: Best Musical. “It was the most incredible thing,” says author Robert Freedman, who also took home an award for best book, “it’s surreal and it’s wonderful.” His collaborator, Steven Lutvak, who wrote the music and co-authored the lyrics, adds, “given the almost eleven years that we had worked on the show, to win that was nothing less than astonishing.”

IN THE SPOTLIGHT amusing ways. What keeps the musical light and entertaining is that every single one of the D’Ysquiths – male, female, young and old – is played by the same actor. “If you have a talented actor getting killed over and over again,” says director Tresnjak, who won a Tony for his work on the show, “then each murder is a reward, because he’s going to come back as another delightful characterization.” And, Freedman adds that each D’Ysquith is “loathsome in different ways, but in kind of the same way, in their attitude toward the little people, and their arrogance, which is silly. They’re all silly people, too.” Tresjnak says all the musical’s characters – even the seemingly nice ones – are “a little wicked.” And the writers admit they took great pains to make their protagonist, Monty, who also romances two women in the show, sympathetic, despite his murderous proclivities. “He’s an underdog,” says Freedman, “not only did he grow up poor, but he was denied the kind of life that he should have been born into and should’ve had. I think there’s a bit of fantasy or wish fulfillment, in seeing him be able to get revenge on the people who made it impossible for him to advance in the world.” Tresnjak says “this is the comic side of The Talented Mister Ripley. Why do people like those Patricia Highsmith books and movies? Why do we like to see people get away with it? Because, a part of us wants to get away with it – whatever it is.” A big part of the musical’s appeal is its theatricality. There’s a toy stage inside a larger proscenium, which constantly opens to reveal new two-dimensional settings for the murders (a parish church, a frozen lake, a garden, etc.); the ensemble of six play multiple roles; and the score has echoes of Gilbert and Sullivan, Lerner and Loewe and

English music hall. “What we are, in a way, is a very low comedy in a very fancy box,” says Lutvak. “There’s all that faux classical music and it’s all very proper and it’s Edwardian England and the women are all corseted and everything is buttoned up. But, in reality, it’s a low comedy; it’s a Bert Lahr, laugh-your-ass-off comedy.” And audiences of all ages have embraced Gentleman’s Guide. Director Darko Tresnjak says, “It’s attracting more and more young people. It seems to kind of have a cult status with many of them. And some of them are posting videos [of some of the songs] on YouTube!” The LA-based Robert Freedman says, when he visits New York, he frequently slips into the theater to catch the last fifteen minutes of the show. “By the end people are overwhelmed and thrilled and it’s just so exciting,” he says. “It’s the thing about the show that’s the most meaningful to me; feeling that from the audience and knowing that I’ve been a part of it, of a sharing experience like that. There’s nothing like it in the world.” 45

Swirl
Comes to Light in Cowles Commons It’s impossible to miss the new Cowles Commons sculpture illuminating downtown Des Moines with its whimsical design, shape and lighting. “Swirl,” named and designed by San Francisco-based visual artist Jim Campbell, catches the eye in unique ways depending on the time of the day.
“A
t first, it was difficult to name “Swirl” because its daytime and nighttime presence are very different,” said Campbell. “The title had to both reference the shape and the movement of the imagery that will be seen at night. The form itself also implies movement. “Swirl” is both a verb and a noun so it seemed to make sense for my design.”
“Swirl” is held up with nine heavy-duty stainless steel uprights. Its exact dimensions are 28 feet wide, 94 feet wide and 28 feet tall. More than 8,000 LED lights are suspended in the air, with playful imagery and colors shown at nighttime. The $1.5 million dollar sculpture, which officially lit up for the first time in January, will feature low resolution videos that “play” on current events, such as the IMT Des Moines Marathon. Des Moines Performing Arts, the organization that operates Cowles Commons and commissioned “Swirl” after Des Moines Arts Center’s director Jeff Fleming recommended Campbell, is excited for the sculpture’s theatrics that will dazzle passersby. “I can’t wait to see the different themes that emerge from the videos and LED lights,” said Laura Sweet, Des Moines Performing Arts Vice President and COO. “Swirl” is a wonderful reflection of our 52

community’s dynamic spirit, commitment to technology and evolving culture.”
About Cowles Commons
“Swirl’s” installation started last October by Demiurge LLC, a sculptural fabrication company based in Denver, Colo., who also fabricated the sculpture. Crews, including local volunteers, spent several weeks working on the intricate installation, which completed the Cowles Commons renovation project.
Des Moines Performing Arts opened Cowles Commons this past June after a $12 million dollar redesign and renovation project that started with a design charrette and public workshops in 2008, followed by construction that began in fall 2013. In addition to “Swirl,” several new amenities were added, including a red granite stone and brick surface extending from Capital Square to the Des Moines Civic Center, creating a “red carpet;” the Lauridsen Fountain, a decorative water feature with 55 colorchanging lights programmed to change colors in conjunction with the streams of water; seat walls with thoughtprovoking peace quotes from a variety of authors; enhanced lighting that creates safety and ambiance from the internationally renowned Iowa-based company, Musco Lighting; and more than 12,000 native plants and 33 new trees that were planted throughout the commons. The goal: to create a worldclass cultural and urban destination for everyone.
Sweet added, “Swirl” represents the city’s future and it also pays homage to its history, complementing the other important pieces in Cowles Commons, like the Crusoe Umbrella and the Peace Rock.”
Artist Lecture on “Swirl”
On March 13, Des Moines Performing Arts and the Des Moines Arts Center will present an artist lecture by Campbell to talk about “Swirl.” The event will take place at the Levitt Auditorium in the Des Moines Art Center at 2 p.m. Reservations are required at DesMoinesArtCenter.org.
