From the President & CEO

Dear friends, Welcome to the 2014 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase, which celebrates the achievements of Iowa students involved in their high school musical productions. Throughout the year, the Des Moines Civic Center stage becomes home for top touring Broadway talent. Tonight, we celebrate Iowa’s rising stars as the next generation of musical theater artists. For most high school extracurricular activities, such as athletics and music, there are many opportunities for students to be recognized and to learn from watching their peers. The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, now in its second year, was created to provide similar opportunities for students involved in high school musical theater. It’s a joy to honor the students from 17 participating high schools for their extraordinary achievements both on stage and behind the scenes. We are grateful to all of the students and teachers for their contributions to tonight’s program, and special thanks go to the Central Iowa theater professionals who volunteered to serve as adjudicators for the program this year. We look forward to seeing you again at next year’s Awards Showcase on Monday, June 1, 2015. From all of us at Des Moines Performing Arts, congratulations to everyone involved!

Jeff Chelesvig President & CEO Des Moines Performing Arts

About the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, presented by Des Moines Performing Arts, is an education-based program that provides support for high school musical theater programs and highlights the importance of arts education. The program consists of three parts: Adjudication Throughout the school year, panels of community adjudicators comprised of performing arts educators and professionals attend and review each participating production. Students and directors receive valuable feedback that can be used to grow and strengthen their future work. Learning Opportunities Special learning opportunities, including master classes with visiting Broadway artists and technical workshops, are offered to participating schools to help students and directors strengthen their craft and understanding of musical theater. Awards and Recognition Based on reviews and scores, schools and students receive awards that honor their achievements in categories such as choreography, design, supporting performer, lead performer and overall musical production. The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards program is designed to be celebratory rather than competitive in nature. Any student or school at an outstanding level is recognized for their achievement. Multiple winners may be named in each category as performances merit. The year culminates in a professionally produced Awards Showcase held at the Des Moines Civic Center. The event features student performances and the opportunity for students from across participating schools to collaborate with guest Broadway professionals.

Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards:

Learning Beyond the Stage T

he Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards saw significant growth in its second year, doubling in school participation and expanding the geographic radius of schools eligible to participate. Just as important, the program increased its commitment to providing unique learning opportunities designed to help schools and students improve their musical theater skills. In many cases, these opportunities brought students face-to-face with Broadway professionals who were at the Des Moines Civic Center because they were involved with national tours appearing in the Willis Broadway Series. One of the learning opportunities was a song interpretation master class taught by Nkrumah Gatling

of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. “The things I learned will carry me for the rest of my career. I learned how deeply you can feel a piece, and how simplicity is beauty when performing,” said Breanna Stiles, a junior at Ankeny High School. The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards also recognized the need to provide additional training opportunities for students working behind-the-scenes on their school musical productions. Throughout the year, program staff worked with local professional stage manager Janet Albanese to offer a series of interactive workshops on the art of stage management. Students are also now working as assistant stage managers alongside professionals for the Awards Showcase technical weekend and event.

Pella Christian High School students explore the inner workings of the Civic Center during a catwalk tour led by Brian Anstedt, Des Moines Performing Arts Production Director.

Integrity Narcisse from Roosevelt High School is coached by Nkrumah Gatling from the national tour of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess during a song interpretation master class.

Students push their dance skills in a master class taught by Ryan Jackson from the national tour of Wicked.

“I see this as not only a great time but an opportunity for me to learn more skills for the future,” said Alex Lindsley, an Indianola High School Senior. Lindsley is one of six students working backstage, listening to cues on the headset and making the magic of the Awards Showcase happen. “We’re just beginning to scratch the surface on the learning opportunities that are possible through the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards,” said Karoline Myers, Des Moines Performing Arts Education Manager. “We look forward to continuing to expand the breadth and depth of offerings available to participating schools.”

Triple Threat Award Sponsor

“The performing arts can be a powerful force for change in our society by allowing a wide audience to ‘go places’ and ‘meet people’ otherwise not available to them, to acquaint us with other cultures and traditions and even our own history in an engaging and immediate way that no other medium can achieve and to do that in a shared experience which is ‘LIVE THEATER’. Appearing on stage for all to see can be an exhilarating experience filled with potential while fraught with risk - not a venture for the faint of heart but only for the courageous and committed. Thank you for your dedication and best of luck to you all.”
