FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear friends, In the latter part of the 19th century through the early 20th century, news and information was disseminated to most Americans through newspapers. And to get newspapers into the hands of readers, publishers relied on a large number of fiercely independent businessmen for whom the task of selling newspapers on street corners was an essential part of their life. As unlikely as it may seem today, these businessmen typically ranged in age from five to 15 years of age, and they were known as “Newsboys,” or more colloquially at the time, “Newsies.” When publishers in New York City raised the price they charged the Newsies for newspapers, the young businessmen revolted, which led to the real-life “Newsboy Strike of 1899,” a two-week stand-off between wealthy publishers like Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst on one side, and the young Newsboys, many of whom were homeless, on the other. It is the story of this strike and its outcome that formed the basis of a 1992 Disney musical film and the subsequent Broadway musical. And it is our pleasure to bring the national tour of Newsies to the Civic Center as part of our Willis Broadway Series. Originally, Disney saw a stage version of Newsies as a show to be licensed to professional and amateur theaters. They commissioned Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein to write the book, and had composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman expand their original score for the movie, adding six brand new numbers to many of the beloved songs from the film. To bolster interest in the show, Disney collaborated with New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse on the first stage production of Newsies. The resounding success of the Paper Mill production prompted a transfer to Broadway, and what was originally scheduled for limited 12-week run of 105 performances stretched to a run of 1,005 performances over two and half years due to popular demand. And the Broadway production garnered Tony Awards in 2012 for Best Choreography and Best Score. In many ways, Newsies is a big, old-fashioned musical, with a great score, incredible choreography by Christopher Gattelli, and a lot of heart. Please enjoy the show, and thank you for your support of Des Moines Performing Arts and the Willis Broadway Series.

Newsies: Read All About It! By Michael Lassell
I
f someone gave you the chance to produce a Broadway version of any Disney film, chances are slim that you’d settle on NEWSIES, the 1992 live-action musical that is a rare financial failure in Disney’s history. In fact, it’s a decision that no one ever made. The Tony-winning rendition of NEWSIES almost wished itself into existence despite odds about equal to those faced by the ragtag band of New York City paperboys who challenged publishing titans. “In 1899, when Joseph Pulitzer and his cronies decided to up the price they charged the newsies for their ‘papes,’ a boy named Kid Blink threw down his stack of The World and called for a strike,” says Thomas Schumacher, president of Disney Theatrical Productions. Miraculously, after just two weeks, the paperboys won. The story was all but forgotten until the late 1980’s when husband and wife duo Bob Tzudiker and Noni White developed an original screenplay about the plucky street kids. Meanwhile, Disney was reinventing animation under the leadership of Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg. That

renaissance involved fusing animation with the pizzaz (and structure) of Broadway musicals. Katzenberg decided to recast the NEWSIES script as a musical. Critics savaged the film, reserving a small measure of praise for the choreography by the film’s director Kenny Ortega and for its anthemic songs by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman. The all-singing, all-dancing story of the strike faded into history. Or did it? 44 52

DES MOINES PERFORMING ARTS
IN THE SPOTLIGHT There’s nothing I like more than a challenge. “So Harvey takes a look,” remembers Schumacher. “He fixed a lot of problems and structured it like a musical.” Disney staged two workshops and made the decision to coproduce a short run at the Paper Mill Playhouse. “There was never any plan to bring it to Broadway,” Schumacher says, “but we had a great new book and an expanded score and we got a pretty good notice in The New York Times.” Suddenly a Broadway production was a real possibility.

“We knew that fraternities were performing it, colleges and summer camps were performing it,” says Schumacher, but he had no intention of mounting a Broadway production. In 2006, he did decide to develop a script for licensing. But solving the problems of the movie was proving a challenge, until Harvey Fierstein came along. As Fierstein recounts it, “Alan said, ‘Forget it. It’s never going to work.’ I was hooked.
Disney Theatrical worked on a plan that made it possible to move the production to Broadway for a limited run. “We were going to do it for ten weeks,” Schumacher remembers. “Then due to overwhelming fan support, we extended it through the summer, and then just let it run open-ended.” NEWSIES was nominated for eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and took home wins for choreography and score. “The definitive word that comes to mind when I reflect on the NEWSIES experience is ‘heart,’” says its director Jeff Calhoun. “Like the newsboys’ triumph over Pulitzer, our creative team’s triumph over the enormous odds of commercial success is a story of beating the odds and touching the heart.”

udiences attending the Des Moines debut of Jessica Lang Dance will not only experience the mastery of choreographer Jessica Lang, hailed by Dance Magazine as “a master of visual composition,” they will also enjoy a very special collaboration. Ahead of the Feb. 11, 2016 performance, 16 local dance professionals and students will open the evening with a performance from Jessica Lang’s repertoire. The special performance is the culmination of the Des Moines Dance Project, a collaboration between Des Moines Performing Arts and Jessica Lang Dance. Both organizations share a commitment to enriching communities through art and cultural activities. “Des Moines has a strong dance community and we continue to look for ways to partner
and connect the dance community to world class artists on our stage,” said Eric Olmscheid, Des Moines Performing Arts’ Director of Programming and Education. Dancers delight in the opportunity. “Getting to work with such a talented choreographer is an amazing experience. Being able to perform the choreography of such a worldrenowned choreographer is a dream come true,” said Iowa Ballet Academy student Riley Kenin. The Des Moines Dance Project began with an audition workshop last October. Of the 29 dancers who auditioned, 16 were selected to participate. Regardless of final selections, all dancers that participated in the workshop had the opportunity J. Fiorenza and K. Henning, Jessica Lang Dance, photo by Sharen Bradford

to work with dancers from Jessica Lang Dance on style, technique, and the ins and outs of a professional dance audition. “This is a fabulous opportunity for young and old dancers alike. I am very excited to work with such high caliber dance professionals, having the chance to learn from them will help me push myself to go beyond my comfort level and to continually progress in my own artistry, ” said Des Moines professional dancer Lisa Lewis. Local dancers spent the first week of January staging the piece A Solo in Nine Parts with Jessica Lang Dance company members and will spend the week before the public performance in final rehearsals. This piece was commissioned by the Kansas City Ballet in 2010, and, as the name suggests, is a piece originally created for nine dancers. However, as part of this unique opportunity, some sections of the piece have been restructured as duets, thus allowing for the participation of 16 dancers. In addition to the Des Moines Dance Project, Jessica Lang Dance will have a matinee performance as part of Des Moines Performing Arts’ Applause Series. For more information about Jessica Lang Dance, visit www.DesMoinesPerformingArts.org.

Of those who auditioned, 16 dancers were selected to perform A Solo in Nine Parts as the opening to the Jessica Lang Dance performance at the Civic Center.
