FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear friends, In late 2011, the talk of the theater community in New York was a new musical playing Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop. Every one of my friends and colleagues who saw the show had the same reaction – that it was a very touching, special show. That show was Once. Both times I’ve seen Once, (yes, I’ve seen Once twice – ha!) I’ve been truly charmed by the storytelling, the staging of the show, and the incredible music and lyrics. In Once, Girl meets Guy – literally. As in the movie on which the show is based, the two main characters are simply known as Guy and Girl. And as Guy, a Dublin street musician, is giving up on his dream, Girl takes an interest in his love songs. That journey is the heart of this wonderful show. Once won eight Tony Awards in 2012, including Best Musical, and we are thrilled to present the national tour at the Des Moines Civic Center in its first year of touring. We are grateful to all our Willis Broadway Series season ticket holders. You can actually renew your season tickets now for the 2014-2015 season! If you are not a season ticket holder, now is the time to become one. We have an exciting line-up, and season ticket holders get the best seats at the best prices for the best of Broadway in Des Moines. Thank you for being here. Enjoy the show!

FROM THE CHAIR
Dear friends, Welcome to the Des Moines Civic Center and to the Willis Broadway Series. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our loyal season ticket holders and to our donors whose generous gifts are the foundation for all we do. We truly appreciate your support. In addition to the Willis Broadway Series, Des Moines Performing Arts presents The Dance Series, the Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series, and three offerings within the Prairie Meadows Temple Theater Series – the Temple Comedy Series, Live at the Temple and Lunch Unplugged. The staff and board take great pride in making our four venues performance homes for our entire community, including the Des Moines Symphony and the SmartTalk Connected Conversations Series. To embrace our roots, we welcome local artists, dance studios, students and more onto our stages each year. Des Moines Performing Arts is also a national leader in theater and arts education. More than 50,000 students attend curriculum-connected performances in our facilities each year. Teachers learn to incorporate the arts into traditional classroom topics. The new Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards are elevating and showcasing the work of high schools and their students. As a non-profit organization, Des Moines Performing Arts requires your help to make all of this happen. We ask for your support as a donor and appreciate your help in creating a world-class performing arts center. To learn more about attending any of our performances or about making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call (515) 246-2300. Thank you for being here. Enjoy the show!

very season, the Willis Broadway Series gives Iowans the opportunity to experience some of the most entertaining, creative and sought-after theater productions to come out of New York City — all from the convenience of Des Moines Performing Arts’ world-class venue, the Des Moines Civic Center. Bringing Broadway to Iowa has required the focused determination of several passionate people, including Des Moines Performing Arts President and CEO Jeff Chelesvig. He serves on the Board of Governors and Executive Committee of The Broadway League, the national trade association for the commercial theater industry and one of two organizations that present the Tony® Awards. Des Moines Performing Arts is also part of the Independent Presenters Network (IPN), a group of road presenters that invest in Broadway productions, including Tony Award winners Kinky Boots and Pippin. Both shows are coming to the Civic Center in 2015 on their first national tours. Cooper Grodin as The Phantom. Photo: Matthew Murphy

IN THE SPOTLIGHT “We hear all the time from performers that our audiences are wonderful ... We don’t have to beg for shows; we get pitched for shows!” — Jeff Chelesvig
while the Civic Center seats more than 2,700. “We pride ourselves on bringing Broadway productions to the heart of Des Moines. We also think downtown provides a true convenience factor, with dining and lodging, as well as ample parking, all within blocks of the theater.” Bringing Broadway to Iowa has been marked with some significant milestones. The first was selling more than 100,000 tickets for the five-week run of The Phantom of the Opera in 1997, thus establishing Des Moines as a city that could sustain a large, high-quality tour. The second was reaching 10,000 season ticket holders after building the subscription base for years. “We reward these individuals who invested in the series with the best seats at the best prices,” Chelesvig said. The rewards can also be seen in Iowa’s continually evolving culture, booming economy and nationally recognized quality of life.
Of course, the Willis Broadway Series wouldn’t be possible without the support of an impressive subscription base. Thanks to more than 10,000 season ticket holders, touring productions can expect wellattended Des Moines shows with appreciative audiences, making the Civic Center a highly desirable venue. “We hear all the time from performers that our audiences are wonderful,” Chelesvig observed. “They’re responsive, they’re smart, they laugh at the right times. We don’t have to beg for shows; we get pitched for shows!” Chelesvig explained that the Civic Center’s size is also attractive to show producers, who are essentially paid according to ticket sales. based on the movie. “I guffawed when my agent called and asked me to speak to the producers,” says Walsh. “I said, ‘What a stupid idea.’ It’s a two-hander with very little plot. It’s delicate. So I called the producers and told them it wasn’t for me. There’s no tradition of musical theater in Ireland, so I rubbished the idea. Then they told me John Tiffany was attached to it as director.”
n 2007, the charming, off-beat Irish film Once opened to glowing reviews and quickly developed a fervent following. The touching, lyrical musical tells the story of two down-on-their-luck musicians, an angst-ridden Dublin street singer/songwriter who works as a vacuum repairman, and a Czech immigrant who sells flowers in order to support herself and her family. The movie’s stars, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, also wrote much of the score, and received an Oscar for their beautiful ballad, “Falling Slowly.”
The two men are longtime friends, and although Tiffany also had doubts as to the viability of the material as a Broadway musical, he convinced Walsh not to reject the idea outright. “John said, ‘Let’s just take two days, and we can read the screenplay and listen to the songs and talk about it.’ So I said, ‘Okay, we’ll do two days. And that’s all we’ll do.’”
Once is simultaneously graceful and gritty, and has a naturalism and intimacy that are generally best achieved in film, which explains why the noted Irish playwright Enda Walsh was less than enthusiastic when he was asked to write a Broadway musical 54
the fourth wall; it obliterates it. “We wanted the audience to own the experience,” says Walsh. As the show unfolds, the focus is, of course, on the relationship between Guy and Girl, but the audience also catches glimpses of the lives of the other characters. “We needed to be sure that there are all these other love stories in the air. Each person is riffing off a love that’s been lost, that got away. That was the key: for the audience to feel part of the experience, and also to look at the people on the stage and go, ‘They’re us.’”
Not quite. “Those two days convinced us that we wanted to do this show,” says Tiffany. That was the beginning of a journey that led to Broadway and eight 2012 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book (Walsh) and Best Direction of a Musical (Tiffany). “I never think about adapting films for the stage,” says Tiffany. “That’s not the way I work. And when I was approached about Once, I hadn’t even seen the film. But one of my best friends said, ‘You will love the music.’ So I downloaded the soundtrack, and absolutely loved it. I’d never heard music like that, and the music is the reason why I wanted to do the show. Not just the music itself, but the fact that it’s a story about creating music, a story about the healing power of music. Immediately I thought, ‘We’re going to be able to see actors create that music in front of us’. That’s really exciting. Actors have played instruments on stage for years, but not always in a show about making music.”
The material has proved to be as powerful on stage as it is on film. “People have said to me, ‘When I was sitting in the theatre watching Once, I felt like I was watching it with everyone I’ve ever loved, whether or not they’re still in my life.’”
The 12 adult members of the cast play at least one instrument, and are on stage virtually throughout the show. “I didn’t want anyone on stage who we didn’t get to know intimately,” says Tiffany. By individualizing each character, adds Walsh, “we built a community, and that became the heart of the piece. They’re an ensemble of misshapen people who sing and tell the story. Watching them play the music and sing and find their voice is very beautiful and very strong. But in addition to making it about community, we also wanted the show to be hugely communal. So how do we do that? We allow the audience on stage.” Prior to the start of the show, the audience is welcome to come on stage and mingle with the cast, who are having a jam session. This bonding ritual doesn’t merely break

Last year, we moved back home and bought the local nursery. Our banker advised us to find a CPA. We did. Our CPA helped us develop a business plan and get a loan. Then, she helped us set up a payroll system, a retirement plan, and everything in between.
It’s your dream. You think about it all the time. Some might call it an obsession, but it’s your dream and you are going to make it happen. Making your dream a reality won’t happen overnight. But, a CPA is the perfect partner to help put it into action. CPAs listen to your ideas and give solid direction to help you build your future and achieve the things that matter most to you. Call your CPA or locate a member of the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants at FindAnIowaCPA.com. Because your dream is worth achieving.
