FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear friends, The dramatic device of a “play-within-a-play” is nothing new – Shakespeare used it in plays such as Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This method was also used in 1972 when composer Stephen Schwartz, writer Roger O. Hirson and director/choreographer Bob Fosse created the musical Pippin. With a story based loosely on the son of Charlemagne, the real-life King of France in the Middle Ages, the musical uses a performing troupe to tell the story of the prince Pippin on his search for meaning and significance in his life. The musical was a big success on Broadway, running for nearly five years and winning five Tony Awards. Four years ago, the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) in Cambridge announced a new production of Pippin, directed by Diane Paulus (The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess) and featuring circus acts by Gypsy Snider of the Canadian-based collective Les 7 Doigts de la Main. In November 2010, I attended a reading of the show in New York City and was thrilled by the integration of circus; it was clear even then that this production would be special. In January 2013, I attended the opening night at A.R.T. After the performance, producers Barry and Fran Weissler announced that Pippin would transfer to New York for its first-ever Broadway revival. Des Moines Performing Arts and our partners in the Independent Presenters Network joined as investors, and picked up a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. The circus elements of this production of Pippin set it apart from other productions. Director Diane Paulus wisely chose to be reverent to the original choreography by Bob Fosse, which has been recreated by longtime Fosse collaborator Chet Walker for the tour, including the iconic “Manson Trio” dance in the first act. Composer Stephen Schwartz recently pointed out that when Pippin was created, the show morphed into the story of a young man in search of himself, a story heavily influenced by the social upheaval happening in America at the time of the Vietnam War and the so-called “generation gap.” Now as we often find America divided and polarized again, a young man examining his life and what it means to be extraordinary is as relevant as ever.

Introducing… PIPPIN! The musical Pippin tells the story of a young man at a crossroads in his life. Does he follow in the footsteps of his father, one of the most powerful men in the land? Or does he strike out on his own, to find his own “corner of the sky?” Pippin is a play within a play. The story is told by a traveling troupe of actors, acrobats and clowns (called “Players”), directed by the mysterious Leading Player. Like a circus or vaudeville act, the Players both act out the roles of the story and speak directly to the audience.

Pippin:

Lewis:

The eldest son of emperor Charlemagne and our play’s hero. Despite the privilege he enjoys as heir to the throne, Pippin is unfulfilled by what life at court has to offer.

The director, producer and lead performer of an eccentric traveling theater troupe. She is narrator, commentator, critic and enabler all at once–but what is her true interest in Pippin?

The youngest son of emperor Charlemagne and Pippin’s half brother. A brash and dim-witted soldier, Lewis loves his mother almost as much as he loves himself. He is next in line (after Pippin) to inherit the throne.

A SCULPTED BODY & WORLD FAMOUS HANDLING It’s best described in one word — nimble. With a wide stance and ideal front-to-back weight balance, it has plenty of iconic MINI swagger and go-kart handling. Pair that with a sleeker profile and more muscular body, and that’s how the MINI Hardtop still makes being little kind of a big deal.

Diavolo’s Work in the Community Leaves a Lasting Impression In the week leading up to Diavolo’s world premiere performance of Cubicle at the Des Moines Civic Center last month, the dance company facilitated more than 20 workshops and events that engaged Iowans of all ages, interests and backgrounds. From workshops with educators on how to bring dance and kinesthetic learning into their classrooms to a free “look-in” event where guests saw Diavolo from “behind the scenes,” their work in the community left a lasting impression!

Diavolo facilitated an interactive workshop for Des Moines’ Wesley Acres residents, including a trust circle exercise pictured above.

Check out the fun with Diavolo throughout the week!

Des Moines Performing Arts’ Heroes of Unforgettable Experiences

A

fter a performance of Stella, Queen of the Snow, an Applause Series show last November, Des Moines Performing Arts staff asked Wright Elementary kindergartner Madelline what she thought of the show. A reader of many Stella books, Madelline loved it, especially when she saw “Fred the Dog” come to life when he dug in the snow and made snow angels on the Des Moines Civic Center stage. Students like Madelline, as well as thousands of Iowans, are exposed to live, professional performing arts and engagement opportunities each year because of the generosity from Des Moines Performing Arts Donors. Thanks to their support, people of all ages experience:

· Master classes, pre- and post-show Q&As

and workshops facilitated by visiting artists.

· Summer camps for children ages 6-18. · Professional development classes for

educators on how to integrate arts in the classroom.

· Theater tours. · Local and national teaching artists conducting in-school workshops about Des Moines Performing Arts productions.

· The Applause Series, a series of

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia company members demonstrate how they bring “Fred the Dog” to life after a performance of Stella, Queen of the Snow.

curriculum-connected performances where more than 56,000 students and educators from 40+ Iowa counties pay just $1 per ticket.

· The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, a program

celebrating the achievements of students involved in their high school musical productions.

Madelline is all smiles after attending Stella, Queen of the Snow with her class. The Applause Series show was Madelline’s first theater-going experience.

Des Moines Performing Arts would like to express its appreciation to Donors, who are heroes because of all they do to help create the thousands of unforgettable experiences – just like Madelline’s with Stella, Queen of the Snow – that will last forever. Thank you.
