FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear friends, While on a trip to London in the fall of 2000, I attended a performance of The Car Man. This dance production at the Old Vic included music from Bizet’s opera, Carmen, and a story line based loosely on the book, The Postman Always Rings Twice. It was my first exposure to the work of British choreographer Matthew Bourne, and it was an amazing and memorable experience. Since that time, I have seen almost all of his full-length works both here in the U.S. and abroad, and I am a huge fan. Matthew Bourne is a master storyteller. With his company, New Adventures, Mr. Bourne defies the boundaries that tend to exist with most dance companies. He has the courage to put new twists on conventional dance – perhaps most notably with his legendary 1995 all-male production of Swan Lake that is still being performed around the world. And, the physical production elements of his work – the sets, lighting, costumes and sound – rival those of many Broadway shows. Mr. Bourne’s company celebrated its 25th season last year, culminating in the world premiere of Sleeping Beauty in October 2012. After a tour in the U.K., the production enjoyed an eight-week, sold-out engagement at Sadler’s Wells in London, where I saw it last December. And as a member of the Independent Presenters Network, Des Moines Performing Arts has also had the pleasure of investing in several of Mr. Bourne’s productions over the years, including Sleeping Beauty. We are very pleased to welcome Mr. Bourne and the entire company to the Des Moines Civic Center for the North American Premiere of this fantastic production. From Des Moines, the company will travel to six cities. The tour includes extended runs in Cleveland, New York, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. Please enjoy the Willis Broadway Series presentation of Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty.

FROM THE CHAIR
Dear friends, Welcome to the Des Moines Civic Center and to the Willis Broadway Series. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our loyal season ticket holders and to our donors whose generous gifts are the foundation for all we do. We truly appreciate your support. In addition to the Willis Broadway Series, Des Moines Performing Arts presents The Dance Series, the Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series, and three offerings within the Prairie Meadows Temple Theater Series – the Temple Comedy Series, Live at the Temple and Lunch Unplugged. The staff and board take great pride in making our four venues – the Civic Center, the Stoner Theater, the Temple Theater and Cowles Commons – performance homes for our entire community, including the Des Moines Symphony, StageWest Theatre Company and the SmartTalk Connected Conversations Series. To embrace our roots, we welcome local artists, dance studios, students and more onto our stages each year. Des Moines Performing Arts is also a national leader in theater and arts education. More than 50,000 students attend curriculum-connected performances in our facilities each year. Teachers learn to incorporate the arts into traditional classroom topics. The new Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards are elevating and showcasing the work of high schools and their students. As a non-profit organization, Des Moines Performing Arts requires your help to make all of this happen. We ask for your support as a donor and appreciate your help in creating a world-class performing arts center. To learn more about attending any of our performances or about making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call 515-246-2300. Thank you for being here. Enjoy the show!

NEW ADVENTURES is proud to be Resident Company at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London where it regularly performs record-breaking extended seasons. The Company annually undertakes extensive country-wide touring, appearing at more venues and giving more performances each year than any other UK dance company. British dance’s biggest export for over 10 years, New Adventures has performed seasons at the world’s most iconic venues (Sydney Opera House, New York City Center, The Chatalet in Paris, The Kennedy Center, Washington and The Moscow Arts Theatre), the most prestigious Festivals (Edinburgh, Ravenna and Chekhov International Festivals) and regularly tours to Japan, the USA, Australia, Europe and Russia. Mixing popular appeal with a groundbreaking and unique theatrical language, New Adventures is one of the great success stories of British Theatre. The Company has notched up a staggering ten Olivier nominations for its productions, has won the Manchester Evening News Dance Award four times and was given a Special TMA award for its commitment to national touring. New Adventures has also been a pioneer in taking dance to wider audiences through the medium of film. Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker! is the only full length dance production to be shown on BBC1 in the last 30 years; a studio adaptation of The Car Man is still a dance bestseller, and the recent recording of Swan Lake by Sky Arts 3D became the first ballet to be shot in 3D for cinema and DVD release. The new recording of Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty is currently being broadcast worldwide, and can also be seen in cinemas and on DVD and Blu-ray. In 2008 the company created its charitable wing, Re:Bourne, which aims to inspire

This was followed in 2010 by the launch of The New Adventures Choreographer Award (NACA) which showcases the work of a young choreographer, and was created to honour Bourne’s 50th Birthday. Last year’s 25th Anniversary celebration saw the company performing six diverse works at thirty two UK venues. This culminated in the world premiere of Matthew Bourne’s production of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty in October 2012. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Composer) Born in Votkinsk in 1840, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was attracted to music at a very early age.
He originally studied to be a lawyer and after passing his exams became a civil servant. However, as soon as the St Petersburg conservatory was founded in 1862 he left his job and enrolled as a student of music. His avid interest in his subject gained him excellent diplomas and he was soon appointed to the post of professor at the Moscow conservatory. Tchaikovskyís early attempts at composition proved to be unsuccessful and he lived a poor hand-to-mouth existence until 1876 when he met a wealthy patron, Nadezhda von Meck. A curious contract was drawn up whereby his benefactor agreed to look after his material needs provided that they never met and maintained contact only through correspondence. Tchaikovsky is perhaps the most Russian of all Russian composers, drawing on traditional folk themes and ëWesternisingí them

through lavish orchestrations. His prolific musical output exceeds even that of Rimsky-Korsakov and his instinct led him to symphonic works and ballet scores, though for practical financial reasons he also wrote ten operas and much chamber music for his own enjoyment. He achieved greatest acclaim with his ballet scores: Swan Lake (1877 in Moscow and 1895 in St Petersburg); The Sleeping Beauty (1890); and The Nutcracker (1891). His first score, Swan Lake, was not well received when first presented. The choreography was poor, the production was created from old Bolshoi sets and costumes, and the orchestra played badly, claiming the music was too difficult to play. It was only through the enormous success of the other scores that Swan Lake was revived in 1895 with new choreography by Marius Petipa (Acts One and Three) and Lev Ivanov (Acts Two and Four). Tchaikovsky never found contentment in his life, his music always expressed a certain pessimism, and his marriage was disastrous, causing him to attempt suicide in 1878. He died tragically in St Petersburg in 1893, just eight days after conducting the first performance of his Pathétique Symphony. DES MOINES PERFORMING ARTS
A Round of “Applause” for School-Based Program School is back in session! For more than 50,000 Central Iowa students and teachers, the learning will extend beyond the classroom this year. Why? They will experience a performance during the school day thanks to Des Moines Performing Arts’ Applause Series.
What is the Applause Series? The Applause Series, which kicked off in 1996, features professional touring shows for students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The school matinee program engages students and educators in a diverse offering of music, theater and dance productions and provides a unique experience to learn through the performing arts. In addition to exposing students to high-quality artistic experiences, each performance connects to additional classroom curriculum areas such as history, literature, math and science. “It’s a great way to get our children involved in literature, not only reading a book but seeing it performed in front of them. They see that literature is more than just words on a page,” said Donna Britt, a first-grade teacher at Jackson Elementary in Des Moines.

Matthew Bourne’s
The love story of a century By Gerard Raymond
E
ven before the curtain rises on Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty, you can be certain that his version of the famous Tchaikovsky ballet will be unlike any other; the English director and choreographer has a special knack for reimagining ballet classics. In his best-known 1995 creation, Swan Lake, the traditional corps de ballet of graceful ballerinas was replaced by a menacing ensemble of virile male dancers. A previous reinterpretation of yet another Tchaikovsky classic, The Nutcracker, cheekily relocated the setting of the perennial Christmas favorite to a Dickensian orphanage, and his version of Prokoviev’s Cinderella was set in wartime London during the Blitz. “I am looking to tell a modern story to a wide range of audiences – ballet fans, theatergoers and cinema goers – and I set myself the task to try to tell a story that doesn’t require any prior knowledge,” says Bourne, describing his particular hybrid style of ballet and musical theater. Audiences may have some memories of Sleeping Beauty, of 51
course – if not the traditional Tchaikovsky and Petipa ballet or the various versions of the 17th Century French fairy tale on which it was based, then certainly from the beloved 1959 Walt Disney animated movie classic. Bourne, however, has created his own gothic romantic fantasy. “Tchaikovsky’s score is very melodic and beautiful, and has a darker side to it as well, but I had always been a little put off by the story,” says Bourne. For one thing, he explains, the love story in the original ballet is rather insipid: After a hundred-year sleep – the result of a curse laid at birth by an evil fairy queen – the princess Aurora awakes, meets this total stranger and immediately falls in love. “In fact, Disney actually saw that flaw in the story as well,” notes Bourne. “In his movie, Aurora meets a young man in the forest, who she thinks is a commoner but is actually a prince, and they have a sort of romance before the curse happens. Our take on the story is that he is her childhood sweetheart – an unsuitable partner because he is the Royal gardener,” he continues. “But then we had the dilemma of how he stays alive for her when she wakes up. Disney did away with that, but nobody really notices this.” Bourne resolved the problem of the plot’s century-long time lapse by having a fairy, Count Lilac in this version, endow the young suitor with supernatural powers through a bite in the neck. “It is a Gothic fairy story so I didn’t think it was too much of a stretch to go to a story with vampires in it,” he remarks. He’s not far off the mark, really, since Dracula, Bram Stoker’s seminal novel about the undead, was first published in 1897, just seven years after the St. Petersburg premiere of Tchaikovsky’s original ballet. In fact, by fully embracing
Aurora’s hundred-year coma, Bourne found the look and style of his production. His story begins with Aurora’s birth in 1890, the year the ballet premiered, and then moves forward 21 years to 1911, when the princess comes of age and succumbs to the curse. When she is eventually woken up, it is the 21st Century. “Because Aurora crosses time from one era to the next, I see her as a forward-looking young woman – almost a woman of the future,” the director explains. As some commenters have noted, Bourne’s version of Sleeping Beauty is something like Downton Abbey meets Twilight. Beyond Matthew Bourne tapping into trends in popular culture, Bourne also offers us his own dance history lesson in the course of the evening: variations on the original ballet, an evocation of Isadora Duncan and period dance crazes from the Edwardian era, and a contemporary segment that throbs with dynamic and confrontational movement. “It was very rewarding to have this enormous span of time to play with, and the dancers need to be very versatile to capture all the different styles,” he notes. “Sleeping Beauty is a rite of passage, as many of these stories are, and Aurora has to get through a lot of trials to get her love in the end. There is eventually a happy ending – I won’t give it away – but there are many twists and turns along the way!” Gerard Raymond writes about theater, film, travel and culture, and lives in New York City.

A Local Company. A Plan for the Future. A Dream.
“
Last year, we moved back home and bought the local nursery. Our banker advised us to find a CPA. We did. Our CPA helped us develop a business plan and get a loan. Then, she helped us set up a payroll system, a retirement plan, and everything in between.
It’s your dream. You think about it all the time. Some might call it an obsession, but it’s your dream and you are going to make it happen. Making your dream a reality won’t happen overnight. But, a CPA is the perfect partner to help put it into action. CPAs listen to your ideas and give solid direction to help you build your future and achieve the things that matter most to you. Call your CPA or locate a member of the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants at FindAnIowaCPA.com. Because your dream is worth achieving.
