FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear friends, Welcome to the Des Moines Civic Center and to our Willis Broadway Series presentation of Wicked. Wicked is based on the best-selling 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire. The show invites the audience to learn how two girls meet in Oz and become unlikely friends – and how one grows to become Glinda the Good Witch and the other the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked also deals with many social issues, including tolerance of people who are not like us and the eternal struggle of good versus evil. We are very pleased that the October 30th performance of this engagement of Wicked in Des Moines coincides exactly with the show’s 10th Anniversary on Broadway. In ten years, the North American and international companies of Wicked have cumulatively grossed more than $3.1 billion in ticket sales and have been seen by nearly 38 million people worldwide. Des Moines Performing Arts operates the Des Moines Civic Center, the Temple Theater and the Stoner Theater. We also manage Cowles Commons, which is undergoing an $11 million renovation – scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2014. We are honored to present seven different live performance series, including the Willis Broadway Series. And, it’s theatergoers like you who make it possible to bring these entertainment options to Central Iowa. Thank you for your support, and please enjoy this performance of Wicked.

FROM THE CHAIR
Dear friends, Welcome to the Des Moines Civic Center and to the Willis Broadway Series. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our loyal season ticket holders and to our donors whose generous gifts are the foundation for all we do. We truly appreciate your support. In addition to the Willis Broadway Series, Des Moines Performing Arts presents The Dance Series, the Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series, and three offerings within the Prairie Meadows Temple Theater Series – the Temple Comedy Series, Live at the Temple and Lunch Unplugged. The staff and board take great pride in making our four venues performance homes for our entire community, including the Des Moines Symphony, StageWest Theatre Company and the SmartTalk Connected Conversations Series. To embrace our roots, we welcome local artists, dance studios, students and more onto our stages each year. Des Moines Performing Arts is also a national leader in theater and arts education. More than 50,000 students attend curriculum-connected performances in our facilities each year. Teachers learn to incorporate the arts into traditional classroom topics. The new Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards are elevating and showcasing the work of high schools and their students. As a non-profit organization, Des Moines Performing Arts requires your help to make all of this happen. We ask for your support as a donor and appreciate your help in creating a world-class performing arts center. To learn more about attending any of our performances or about making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call 515-246-2300. Thank you for being here. Enjoy the show!

GREGORY MAGUIRE ( Author of Original Novel) published a dozen novels for children before writing his first adult novel, Wicked. A devotee of children’s fantasy, Maguire’s subsequent novels for adults are variations-on-a-theme: Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister considers Cinderella as a 17th-century maid from Harlem; Lost evokes
the ghost of Charles Dickens’s Scrooge; and Mirror Mirror features a High Renaissance Snow White daunted by the wickedest stepmother, Lucrezia Borgia. Maguire’s novel Son of a Witch, a sequel to Wicked, is followed by A Lion Among Men and the final volume of the Wicked Years, Out of Oz. He lives in Massachusetts and Vermont with his husband, the painter Andy Newman, and their three children. 321 THEATRICAL MANAGEMENT ( General Management) is currently represented by Peter and the Starcatcher. A New Season Begins for the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards
Interschool medley at the 2012-2013 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase.
For Nevada High School theater director Karen Niblock, the impact on her students of the inaugural Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards last season was three-fold.
The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards recently kicked off its second season by accepting applications from high schools within a 90-mile radius of Des Moines Performing Arts. As of this writing, 16 high schools have applied to the program. In

and desired to move forward in their journeys toward mastery in musical theater. Second, there was an immediate bonding between students of various schools and the sense of camaraderie they experienced was powerful in helping them develop as performers. Third, my students had this amazing experience of being able to work with Broadway professionals who could help them finely tune their performances and challenge them to think outside the box and grow both personally and professionally.”
“It’s incredible to see the growth of the program in such a short amount of time,” said Des Moines Performing Arts Education Manager Karoline Myers. “Our goal is to create visibility and support for high school musical theater programs, as well as emphasize the importance of arts education. We’re excited for the new season and the positive impact it will have on young musical theater artists in our state.” As the school year unfolds, a qualified team 50

“The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards program was an incredible start to what I hope will be a long career as a performer. The experience working with industry professionals and performing on Broadway for the Jimmy Awards was an eye-opener that helped confirm my unequalled passion for singing and performing. Prior to the Awards Showcase, students will spend several days working with Broadway professionals to prepare for the show. Hilferty is once familiar but unlike anything we one of the best, and her 200 costumes know. “This is a show in which I was for Wicked, together with Eugene Lee’s Susan Hilferty able to invent everything, including the ingenious set and Kenneth Posner’s animals,” says Hilferty. “If you’re going striking lighting, bring to life the world envisioned to invent a world, you have to create rules for the by Stephen Schwartz (music and lyrics), Winnie world. The musical tells the tale Hilferty drew inspiration from three sources: the of an intelligent, passionate, misunderstood young original illustrations by W.W. Denslow for L. Frank girl with emerald-green skin named Elphaba, and Baum’s Oz books, Maguire’s novel and the show’s how she becomes the notorious Wicked Witch of score and libretto. She speaks often of “riffs” when the West. Some of Hifferty’s dazzling costume designs for Wicked. None of the sleeves are alike, sometimes there are three sleeves, or a coat is made of all collars,” she says. “They’re all deformed and misshaped.” The dazzling costumes in Emerald City began with the idea of dressy clothes. “A lot of times, I designed the costume twice. First I’d design it as if it was an Edwardian costume, and then I’d twist it on an axis. There are all these spirals and big shoulders and more bustles than you can imagine. But the bustle might be on the side or the shoulder. I don’t think there’s anything that has an even hem.” The costumes for Glinda and Elphaba reflect who they are and who they become. When we first meet Glinda, she’s all high-fashion style and little substance. Elphaba, by contrast, has one outfit: a bland jumper, turtleneck sweater and oversized blazer, topped off by a cap and glasses. “The costume makes her look like a scholar, but she is also hiding her greenness,” says Hilferty. “She’s as covered as she can be. She wears boots, because I wanted her to be weighted. I knew that when she became her most iconic, she should be connected to the earth. There’s a sense of solidity to her. Glinda ultimately needed to reflect the sky: light, air, stars, clouds. All the surfaces of her clothes are iridescent. Her tiara has starbursts. Her skirt looks like a cloud. She sparkles. The dress represents her evolution. She becomes good, and in the end, she earns the clothes she’s wearing.” Glinda’s “good witch” white dress may be the most memorable, but Hilferty is partial to Elphaba’s “bad witch” black dress. “I’m not a sparkly girl myself, and I actually think Elphaba’s dress is more beautiful. It accentuates her outer and inner beauty in a non self-conscious way. It also reflects power. The bodice is cut like a corselet and is made of small strips of velvets and _______________________________________________
laces that are quilted together. There are about 15 or 20 different fabrics in the skirt alone.” Perhaps the character whose evolution is most noticeably mirrored in her clothes is Madame Morrible. At the outset, she appears benign, and she’s first seen wearing a rust dress that makes her seem a bit like a nutty professor. But as her ambition grows, her look changes radically. “You see her being revealed for her wickedness,” says Hilferty. “For Morrible, I looked at pictures of Queen Elizabeth I, whose clothes made her look like something from another planet. Her hair was pushed way back on her forehead. That’s how Morrible appears at the end. Her forehead is tight and hard. The front of her bodice has so much beading on it that it’s like a plate of armor. She has high collars that cut off her head, so that her face seems to be pushed forward on a plate.” The costumes for Wicked look nothing like Adrian’s designs for MGM’s The Wizard of Oz, and that is very deliberate. But there is one costume in the show that is a kind of gesture to the movie. “It’s my own little joke,” says Hilferty. “Everything’s in color, but the wizard is in black and white.”

A Local Company. A Plan for the Future. A Dream.
“
Last year, we moved back home and bought the local nursery. Our banker advised us to find a CPA. We did. Our CPA helped us develop a business plan and get a loan. Then, she helped us set up a payroll system, a retirement plan, and everything in between.
It’s your dream. You think about it all the time. Some might call it an obsession, but it’s your dream and you are going to make it happen. Making your dream a reality won’t happen overnight. But, a CPA is the perfect partner to help put it into action. CPAs listen to your ideas and give solid direction to help you build your future and achieve the things that matter most to you. Call your CPA or locate a member of the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants at FindAnIowaCPA.com. Because your dream is worth achieving.
