FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear friends, The 1939 MGM film The Wizard of Oz simply has to be one of the most beloved films in American history. Elements of the film – the characters, the songs, and even lines from the script – still today are part of our popular culture. And in 2011, composer and impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber conceived a new stage musical version of The Wizard of Oz based on the ever popular film’s screenplay (which is currently celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year) and featuring the beloved Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg songs from the movie score, all the favorite characters and iconic moments, plus new songs by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Says Choreographer Arlene Phillips: “The reason Andrew added new songs was that three of the main characters in the film (the Wizard, Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West) actually didn’t have songs.” In order to realize the show as a full scale musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Director Jeremy Sams made the decision to add more music throughout the show. The additional songs better illuminate the characters. The updated sets and costumes are a whimsical hybrid of traditional and contemporary style. Glinda’s dress is a sparkling creation covered in Swarovski crystals, as are Dorothy’s ruby slippers. The Wizard of Oz had its world premiere at The London Palladium Theatre in March of 2011. After a successful West End run, the production had its North American premiere on Toronto in December of 2012, and then embarked on a U.S. tour in September of 2013. From all of us at Des Moines Performing Arts and our team at the Civic Center, we wish you all very happy and safe holidays, and thank you for your continued support. Please enjoy The Wizard of Oz.

FROM THE CHAIR

Dear friends, Welcome! We are so pleased that you are with us. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our Willis Broadway Series Season Ticket Holders and Donors. Your interest, patronage and generosity build the foundation for all we do. Des Moines Performing Arts is the non-profit organization that operates the Des Moines Civic Center, Stoner Theater, Temple Theater and the newly renovated outdoor space, Cowles Commons. At these venues, you will find an extensive range of high-quality live, professional performing arts. The world’s top dance companies perform in The Dance Series. The Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series offers an ideal introduction to theater and the arts for families and children. The Prairie Meadows Temple Comedy Series brings laughs and creative theater performances to the Temple Theater, a space that is also the home to the Prairie Meadows Live at the Temple Concert Series. Des Moines Performing Arts also offers highly impactful educational programs. The Applause Series offers $1 tickets to every one of the more than 55,000 students and teachers who come to its performances annually. Professional development programs provide educators with new strategies for the classroom. And, the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards celebrate the work of Iowa’s talented young people and their committed instructors. All of these programs require donations to operate successfully. I invite you to join us in our mission by becoming a Donor. Your gift will impact many, as will the opportunities for you to explore everything that is Des Moines Performing Arts. To learn more about attending any of our performances or making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call (515) 246-2300. Enjoy the show!
