Sunday, Sept. 9 will mark the first time in Delaware State University history that a women’s golf team steps on the links with a Hornets uniform as DSU opens their inaugural season with theTignanelli Towson Invitational, held at the Towson Golf and Country Club.

The Hornets will be led by freshmen Marie-France Finn (Memramcook, New Brunswick, Canada) and Nicole Rafer (Berlin, Md.), who will start as no. 1 and 2 for Delaware State. Freshman Elaine Aisha Peete (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) will be placed in the third spot for the Hornets while fellow freshmen Brooke Foster (Prior Lake, Minn.) and Ellisa Lee (Ellicott City, Md.) round out the starting five.

I think I did a better job than I originally thought I was going to do. My biggest concern was how they’ll get along and that is definitely not an issue.”

October 14-16 will mark a significant weekend for Delaware State University and Dover golf enthusiasts as the Hornets will host the inaugural Delaware State Invitational at Maple Dale Country Club. Schools committed at this point include Towson, Hofstra, Hampton and Quinnipiac. The Hornets travel north to Cromwell, Conn. the following weekend for the Quinnipiac Bobcat Invitational, split between the TPC River Highlands and The Farms Country Club. “The Quinnipiac event will definitely feature the toughest course of the year,” Thornton said. “The TPC Highlands is a PGA course and it will test everyone to their limits.” DSU wraps up their fall slate with the Savannah State Invitational, held November 9-11 at the Crosswinds Golf Club.

“The hardest competition will definitely be the first one because our ladies don’t know what to expect,” Thornton commented. “I have an idea of what we’re going to do, but that is the first and any first will produce nerves.” Following the Tignanelli Towson Invitational, the team will travel to Charleston, S.C. for the South Carolina State Invitational, held at Patriots Point September 29 through October 2.

Scott Thornton was named the first women’s golf coach in Delaware State University history in August 2011. Thornton came to Delaware State after previously serving as an assistant coach/swing coach for the Towson University men’s and women’s golf teams from 2007 to ‘09 under head coach Brian Yaniger. In addition, Thornton was the Assistant Director of Instruction at the Nike Golf Learning Center in Potomac, Md. While there, he provided instruction to more than a thousand junior golfers. Thornton’s experience has also taken him to some of the world’s top golf academies, including the Ken Venturi Academy in Orlando, Fla., and the IMG Ledbetter Junior Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Furthermore, Thornton had been a golf professional in the Baltimore, Md. area since 1994. He served as an assistant at Hayfields Country Club, The Suburban Club and Fairway Hills Golf Club before his position at the Nike Golf Learning Center. The Maryland native played two seasons at Essex Community College (Md.) before attending the University of Baltimore, where he earned a bachelor’s in corporate communications. He also competed in a number of mini-tours in the mid-1990s. Thornton is currently pursuing his master’s in sports administration from DSU. “I’m excited to join the Delaware State University family and help build the women’s golf program,” said Thornton. “I believe DSU can quickly compete with the fine golf programs in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. I’m looking forward to the challenge of bringing Division I women’s golf to Delaware State University.”

AD Candy Young is the first female to be named the Athletics Director at Delaware State University. She began her new duties on August 13, 2012. Young has been involved in intercollegiate athletics for more than 30 years, including the last six as Head Track and Field/Cross Country Coach, Senior Woman Administrator (SWA), Assistant Athletics Director, Interim AD, Associate AD and Interim Senior Associate Athletics Director at Delaware State University. As Interim Senior Associate Athletics Director, Young provided supervision and administration of 14 sports, along with strength and conditioning, and equipment. As a member of the athletic department’s senior staff team, she provided leadership, guidance and decision making input. Young helped oversee 230 student-athletes, 20 coaching personnel, and an operational budget of over $4 million. Young also served as supervisor of DSU’s “All Sports Camp”, the athletic department’s six-week summer youth camp program. As SWA, she spearheaded several programs to help promote the advancement of women in athletics. In 2010, Young helped to create the annual “Delaware Diamond Extravaganza,” which recognizes the contributions of Delawareans and those with ties to Delaware in women’s sports and education. Young also serves as a delegate in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference where she is a representative of DSU in decision making processes. She was named chairperson of the MEAC “Woman of the Year” Committee selection process in 2010. Delaware State University’s Kalyn Washburn (2010) and Jazmyne Hefflefinger (2012) have been selected as the MEAC’s Woman of the Year during Young’s tenure at DSU. In 2011, Young was submitted as a candidate from the MEAC delegation to represent the conference at the national level, and received an appointment to the Amateurism Cabinet of the NCAA.

Prior to joining DSU, Young was an assistant track coach at The Ohio State University, University of Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, and Fairleigh Dickinson, all NCAA Division I institutions. She also served as an assistant coach at the University of California in Pennsylvania, a Division II program. While coaching track and field, she helped lead her teams to several Big East Conference Championship titles, ECAC titles, a host of individual Big Ten and Big East Conference Champions, NCAA All-Americans, and NCAA Champions. Her Shuttle Hurdle relay team won the Championship of American title in 2000 for The Ohio State University, the only Penn Relay Championship award received by the women at The Ohio State University. Young held a position on the Executive Committee for USA Track and Field for eight years. She was also assigned to the USA Track and Field Women’s Olympic team selection staff for two consecutive Olympic Games. The 1985 graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University is a four-time national collegiate champion, USA Indoor National Champion, eight-time All-American and world record holder. She was a member of the inaugural FDU Athletics Hall of Fame class. Young is also a member of Beaver County and Western Pennsylvania Halls of Fame. She earned her bachelor’s in biological education; and received a master’s in sports management from Delaware State University in 2008. As a high school student Young made the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team as a 100-meter hurdler. She also broke the world indoor record for 55 meter hurdles, and was named Sports Illustrated National High School Athlete-of-the Year. Young credits her success and mentoring to, Dr. Leroy Walker, Dr. Evie Dennis, Russ Rogers, Fred Thompson, Beverly Kearney, and her parents John and Gertie Young.

Within the University, Young submits her time as a liaison to Student Affairs, and the Long-Range Strategic Planning Monitoring Committee.

ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION associate athletics director for student-athlete services Eric Hart resumed his role as the associate athletics director for student-athlete services in August 2012 after serving seven months as DSU’s Interim Director of Athletics. He is committed to the total well being of student-athletes and believes that graduating with a baccalaureate degree is the cornerstone of the student-athlete experience. Under Hart’s leadership, Delaware State University student-athletes have boasted the highest academic marks in school history. Delaware State University lead the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC) with 121 Commissioner’s All-Academic team during the 2011-12 academic year. In 2011, Delaware State University inducted 39 student-athletes with a 3.40 cumulative grade point average or higher into Chi Alpha Sigma National Student-Athlete Honor Society. Hart has helped guide three teams at Delaware State University to achieve scores of 1000 on the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate’s single year score (Women’s Soccer, Men’s Tennis and Volleyball). During the 2009-2010 APR cycle, Men’s Basketball saw a 134 point increase on their single year score. Hart and his staff have aspirations to see team improve upon their Academic Progress Rate (single and multi-year scores). Prior to his arrival to Delaware State University, he served as the associate director for academic services for student-athletes at Appalachian State University from 2006 until his departure in June 2009. He was the driving force in turning around a wrestling program that, prior to his arrival, had a cumulative grade point average of 2.05. In his last semester with the University, the team boasted a cumulative grade point average of 2.989. Women’s Soccer had never earned a

Hart helped guide 18-of-21 student-athletes from ASU to the winter 2009 Academic All-Conference list. Additionally, he had 26-of-44 student-athletes earn spring 2009 Academic All-Conference honors. His teams experienced success on the field as well. The ASU Football team won back-to-back National Championships and three consecutive Southern Conference Championships; the ASU Men’s Track and Field program won the indoor track and field championships in 2007, 2008, and 2009, outdoor championship in 2007 and 2008, and cross country won the conference championship in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 - all during Hart’s tenure. Hart served as an academic counselor at The University of Georgia from 2004 - 2006, working with Men’s and Women’s Golf, Softball, Men’s Basketball, Equestrian, Men’s and Women’s Track and Field. He also worked as a graduate assistant for The University of Tennessee football program, and assisted in the marketing and game day operations for football and men’s basketball. A native of Stoneville, N.C., Hart was a student-athlete at Appalachian State University and earned a B.S. in elementary education (‘97), a Master of Education in school counseling at the University of Georgia (‘99), and an Ed.S. in Counseling from the University of Tennessee (‘01). He is also a 2009 graduate of the NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males and Females. He is married to Erin Hill of North Carolina, by way of Baton Rouge, La.

Prior to her DSU appointment, Moses was assistant athletic director for compliance and senior woman administrator at the University of Texas-Pan American for four years. Moses has also served in collegiate athletics compliance at Tennessee-Chattanooga, Central Florida, Cornell and Brown. A native of Goldsboro, N.C., Moses earned a bachelor’s in political science/history from Duke University and law degree from Tulane.

assistant athletics director for media relations Dennis Jones previously served as a staff writer, assistant sports information director and director of sports information since joining the Delaware State University staff in 1996. In addition, he has handled radio play-by-play duties for the Hornet football, and men’s and women’s basketball teams. He has assisted the NCAA, along with national and local media for Delaware State’s national championship competitions in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, football, softball and bowlling. He currently oversees the daily media relations and statistics for the university’s 18 sports.

He also served as play-by-play announcer and color commentator for local cable television high school football and basketball broadcasts. A graduate of Glassboro State (now Rowan) in New Jersey, Jones resides in Dover, Del. He is a member of the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).

Prior to joining the Delaware State staff, Jones was News/Sports Director at WDOV/ WDSD Radio in Dover, Del. He joined the stations in 1981 as a reporter and was promoted to News/Sports Director in 1985. In addition to covering Delaware news and sports, Jones occasionally filed written and audio reports for the Associated Press, Mutual Broadcasting Network and United Press International during his tenure with

Robinson has a diverse professional profile which includes stints as Marketing Assistant at the University of Florida and Assistant Director of Marketing and Promotions at Virginia Tech. He holds a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from Grambling State University and Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Norfolk State University.

ACADEMIC SERVICES Academic Services for Student-Athletes (ASSA), housed on the second floor of the William C. Jason Library, serves as the academic arm of Delaware State University Athletics. The unit houses five full-time staff members, including an Associate Athletic Director, three Academic Counselors, and a Learning Specialist. Academic Services for StudentAthletes serves approximately 350 scholarship and nonscholarship athletes in 18 NCAA Division I sports. The purpose of ASSA is to cultivate academic enrichment and shape student-athletes to be model citizens of the city of Dover and beyond. They will assist the student-athlete in the following areas: arranging tutoring, monitoring aca-

demic success and progress toward a degree, assisting with personal goals and student life well-being. Their mission is to provide comprehensive services that will prepare our student-athletes to compete and be successful in the classroom, ultimately fostering an environment conducive to graduating. They are customer-service oriented when engaging with prospective student-athletes and their families. We will be leaders in our conference and provide professional development opportunities to our staff so they can effectively master their craft of service to studentathletes.

HORNET ACADEMIC HONORS During the 2011-12 academic school year, Delaware State produced 121 MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic members (more than any other conference school). Other academic honors for the year are as follows: | Jazmyne Hefflefinger (bowling) graduated with a 4.00 GPA and was class valedictorian in addition to being named MEAC Woman of the Year | Brittni Collins-Rideout, Caroline Foltz and McKenzie Trueba (equestrian) the first three Hornets to be named NCEA Academic All-Americans in school history | 14 of 15 teams reported NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores above 900; four teams scored perfect 1000s | Led MEAC for second consecutive season with 121 Commissioner All-Academic honorees | 54 percent of student-athlete population named to the Hornet Academic Honor Roll which honors those earning a 3.00 GPA | 73 Hornets were named to the Dean’s List (22 more than 2010-11) | 25 Hornets were named to the President’s List | 67 Hornets graduated Spring 2012 | DSU softball ranked 37th overall (out of over 130 teams and first out of HBCU schools) while placing nine on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar Athlete list.

Extra benefits (as defined by the NCAA) – “any special arrangement by an institutional employee or representative of athletics interest to provide a student-athlete a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of such a benefit is not considered an NCAA violation if that same benefit is generally available to the institution’s students or their relatives and/or friends or to a particular segment of the student body determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability.”

The NCAA broadly defines a “booster” as an individual, agency, entity or organization who is known by an institution to: | Have participated in or been a member of an agency that promotes the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program | Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or a booster organization for the department | Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution’s athletics program | Have been a season ticket holder | Have provided benefits to student-athletes or their relatives or friends

employment rules Delaware State University and its Director of Athletics ask that all boosters, prior to employing or arranging for the employment of a prospect or enrolled student-athlete, check first with the DSU Athletics Department. The department is permitted to make arrangements for summer employment for prospects prior to their enrollment as freshmen and to enrolled student-athletes during summer and semester breaks. Accurate record keeping must be maintained regarding employment. Therefore, the Department of Athletics asks for your cooperation. | A booster is prohibited from providing employment transportation for prospects or student-athletes unless such transportation is available to all employees. | A booster is permitted to pay student-athletes employed for work actually performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate for similar services in the community or business.

I’m an Alumnus, am I a Booster? Not necessarily. Not all Delaware state alumni are considered boosters. Likewise, a booster does not have to be a graduate of Delaware State. Boosters meet at least one of the criteria listed above. Thus, an individual who has ever made a financial contribution to the Athletics Department is a booster. In a general sense, a season ticket holder in any sport at any time is a booster. Members and financial supporters of any Delaware State athletic organization are boosters. These are only a handful of examples of typical “boosters” who may be affiliated with an athletic program. Many additional scenarios exist, but, regardless of a booster affiliation with the university, it is important that all supporters follow NCAA rules as they interact with prospects, current student-athletes, their families and friends. What you cannot do | A booster is prohibited from making in-person, on-or off-campus recruiting contacts, or written or telephone communication with a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians. | A booster is prohibited from contacting any enrolled student-athlete at another institution for the purpose of encouraging transfer to Delaware State University and participation in its athletics program. If a prospect approaches a DSU booster regarding the athletics program, please explain that NCAA rules prohibit such a discussion and suggest to the prospect that he/she contact the head coach of the sport for more information. | A booster is prohibited from contacting the prospect’s coach, principal or counselor for the purpose of obtaining information about the prospect. | A booster is prohibited from picking up film or transcripts from the prospect’s educational institution. | A booster is prohibited from entertaining a prospect and/or relatives and friends of a prospect at any site, either on-or off-campus. | In addition, a booster is prohibited from providing tickets at no or reduced cost to any Delaware State home or away athletic or non-athletic event for prospects, their relatives or friends. Only the DSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics can provide complimentary admissions to prospects and only for HOME events. | A booster is prohibited from paying or arranging for transportation for a prospect and/or relatives and friends of a prospect to visit campus. While it is permissible for a friend or neighbor to transport a high school or community college student who is NOT an athlete to the campus, NCAA regulations prohibit the activity for a prospect. What you can do | A booster is permitted to send newspaper clippings or any other information regarding a prospect to the respective Delaware State coaching staff. | A booster is permitted to attend high school or community college athletic(s) events. You simply cannot have any contact with prospects or relatives and/or friends. | A booster is permitted to continue established family relationships with friends and neighbors. Contact with sons and daughters of these families is permitted as long as they are not made for recruiting purposes. | A booster is permitted to have a telephone conversation with a prospect ONLY if the prospect initiates the call. However, the booster is not permitted to have a recruiting conversation with the prospect and an institutional staff member cannot prearrange the call.

SPORTS MEDICINE The DSU Sports Medicine Department is committed to providing comprehensive, high quality medical services for its student-athletes. Our goal is to provide for the total health care needs of the student-athlete. On-site medical services include prevention, recognition, evaluation and treatment of injuries and illnesses, rehabilitation services, pre-participation exams, psychological counseling, nutritional counseling and drug education and counseling. The sports medicine team is made up of a team physician, a team orthopedic physician, a team dentist, certified athletic

trainers, certified physical therapists, and certified strength and conditioning specialists. We also have relationships with the other members of the surrounding DSU community, which includes counseling and psychiatric services, and access to other health care professionals.

MISSION STATEMENT Our program is designed to teach all our athletes to become a physically and mentally stronger individual by implementing a program that stresses goal setting, dedication and perseverance.

The strength and conditioning center is a 17,000 feet, stateof-the-art complex with all the amenities of a major college facility. The center is connected to the north end of the Memorial Hall main gymnasium and is solely for the use of Hornet student-athletes. The facility includes a weight room, laundry room, offices for conditioning coaches and locker rooms for men’s and women’s basketball. The addition also includes a two-story entrance and lobby with ticketing area.

PHILOSOPHY The young men and women that we work with in our program are athletes first. All of the activities that we perform with them will be to enhance their natural athletic ability. We will use training concepts and principles from different disciplines to help our athletes reach their goals on and off their respective playing field. Phase II of the project involved the construction of a Wellness Center specifically for the general student population FACILITIES and the general public. This section is located on the southDelaware State University student-athletes benefit from a east end of Memorial Hall and includes the renovation of first-rate strength and conditioning facility. maple dale country club The women’s golf team calls Dover’s Maple Dale Country Club home beginning in 2012. Maple Dale was established in 1925 as a three-hole course and expanded to nine holes in the mid-30’s. After relocating in 1969, it was enlarged to a full 18 holes and now offers a mature course set amidst a wooded terrain, dotted with various ponds. This USGA championship rated 18–hole course is as challenging and fun, as it is beautiful, having only one recorded score below par in a 36 hole tournament.

The Athletics Facilities and Event Operations department is responsible for scheduling, records, budget, personnel and facilities development. They are also responsible for all grounds including outdoor playing surfaces, all surrounding grounds and field preparation for events. Other responsibilities include maintenance of facility equipment, coordinating logistics and operations to conduct all athletic events including meetings, workouts, practices, competitions, championships and camps. All work orders for Telecom, Computer Services, Data Network Services, Physical Plant, Building Services and Alterations and Improvements must be submitted by the Coordinator of Athletic Facilities & Events.

gambler’s choice equestrian center hornets’ nest Gambler’s Choice Equestrian Center features an 18-stall barn and a 10-stall barn, with three tack stalls and a wash stall with hot water, on-site laundry room, heated lounge and bathroom. All stalls include sliding doors and have rubber mats. Both indoor and outdoor arenas feature elevated judges’ stands, along with a PA system for events. Gambler’s Choice has a 100’x200’ clear span indoor arena that allows for allweather riding and a 150’x300’ outdoor sand area. As the home of the DSU Hornets Equestrian team, the facility is equipped for Western and English riding.

The Hornets’ Nest has been the home field of the Delaware State University softball team since 1992. The dimensions for the field are 220’ down the lines and 225’ in centerfield. The infield consists of Diamond-Tex with pro conditioner. In fall 2011, the team installed new sport rye mix grass in the outfield. The Hornets’ Nest includes a press box with Wi-Fi and fiber optics streaming capabilities, home/visitor bull pens, three batting cages, infield/ outfield irrigation, seating capacity of 300 and lights.

alumni stadium soldier field Alumni Stadium was constructed in 1980 and is home for the DSU football, women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer and both men’s and women’s track and field teams. Additionally, the facility is the site of the annual Delaware I & II High School Championship football games.

Home to the DSU baseball team, Soldier Field has hosted games since 1958. The dimensions are 320’ down the lines, 365’ in the leftfield gap, 355’ in the rightfield gap and 380’ in centerfield. Prior to the start of the 2009 season, the leftfield fence was extended to a height of 20’.

memorial hall brunswick doverama Constructed in 1982, Memorial Hall Gymnasium has been home to the DSU men’s and women’s basketball programs as well as the volleyball team for over three decades. The facility was christened by the men’s basketball team on December 7, 1982 with a 9692 double-overtime victory over U.S. International. Since then, the facility has been a part of many exciting contests.

The Brunswick Doverama is home to the bowling team, where they practice daily and host an average of two events each season. The Doverama is located at 1600 S. Governors Ave. (at DuPont Hwy.). For more information, please contact the bowling center at 302-734-7501.

P Dr. Harry L. Williams became the 10th President in the 120-year history of Delaware State University on January 10, 2010, after serving as the institution’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. Shortly after beginning his tenure as president, Dr. Williams convened a Blue Ribbon Commission that crafted a new vision statement and a set of core values to establish DSU as one of America’s most highly respected Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). During the first eight months of his tenure, Dr. Williams held more than 200 meetings with constituencies, including White House officials, Governor Jack Markell, the Delaware Congressional delegation, state legislators, alumni groups, community organizations and others. Dr. Williams also took two trips abroad to sign new collaborative agreements with institutions of higher education in China and South Africa. Under Dr. Williams’ leadership as provost, the University established a new general education program, a distance education strategic plan and a Middle States Monitoring Report plan and successfully completed searches that led to the hiring of a new dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, a director of distance learning, a director of the honors program and an associate vice president for sponsored programs.

North Carolina General Administration as interim associate vice president for academic affairs beginning in September 2007. He was elevated in March 2008 to interim senior associate vice president for academic and student affairs in which he focused on access and outreach for the 17 campuses of the UNC system. Dr. Williams also progressed from an associate director to associate vice chancellor posts in the areas of academic affairs, enrollment and diversity at Appalachian State University from 1988 to 2000 and from 2004 to 2007. He served as interim director of admissions for North Carolina A&T University from 2000 to 2004. In addition to his experience within institutions of higher education, from 2002 to 2008 Dr. Williams was a national marketing and recruitment associate consultant with Noel-Levitz, the top national consultation firm for enrollment and management solutions in the country. In that capacity, Dr. Williams provided consultation expertise to 14 different institutions of higher education, including Delaware State University. Dr. Williams earned a Bachelor of Science in communication broadcasting and a Master of Arts in educational media, both from Appalachian State University. He earned an Ed.D. in educational leadership and policy analysis from East Tennessee State University.

DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY nificant improvements in its research infrastructure and project opportunities. The University currently has research projects in the disciplines of biotechnology, chemistry, law enforcement, mathematics, natural resources, social work, applied optics, computer sciences and other areas. In 2009, the University received a $5 million NASA grant to establish a Center for Applied Optics for Space Science on the DSU campus. In 2011, the state of Delaware set aside $10 million to go toward the construction of a new Optics Research Facility. In addition to its traditional majors, DSU offers unique undergraduate programs in aviation, forensic biology, environmental science, hospitality and tourism management, health promotion and movement sciences. The most popular undergraduate majors are mass communications, criminal justice, sport science, management, psychology, accounting and biology. Over the last three years, the University has also significantly increased its reach around the world through a number of international agreements abroad. In 2011 the University finalized new agreements with several Chinese institutions of higher education. A group of DSU students traveled to China for a one-month learning experience in the spring 2012, and during the current fall semester 2011 more than 100 Chinese exchanges students

are enrolled at DSU. In addition, DSU’s Master of Business Education Program in Vietnam National University graduated its first class in mid-September 2011. DSU offers 18 intercollegiate athletics programs at the NCAA Division I level. Its football, men’s and women’s basketball, softball teams and women’s equestrian have all achieved post-season national tournament bids over the last eight years, mostly the result of winning their conference tournament championship and regular season titles. Most recently, the University has added women’s golf and women’s lacrosse to the University’s intercollegiate sports programs. Over the last five years, the University made significant enhancement to campus life with the completion of a $51.5 million student complex that includes a Strength and Conditioning Facility, a Wellness & Recreation Center, a Swimming Pool and a three-story Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center. During the fall semester 2011, DSU had a school record-enrollment of 4,178 students.

In Kent County, visitors can find Amish buggies on city streets, delicate shorebirds and giant C-5 Galaxy military cargo planes, quiet museums and exciting NASCAR races, arts and antiques, Colonial history, slots and harness racing. Dover, the capital of the First State, invites you to experience life in a small American city – history, tax-free shopping and ambiance, all in a clean safe and friendly environment. You can spend the day shopping or strolling the quaint tree-lined streets to take in the city’s historic architecture, and spend the evenings at the theater or trying your luck at a gaming facility. You can step back in time, literally, by standing on the very corner where in 1787, delegates to Delaware’s Constitutional Convention ratified the U.S. Constitution – thus giving Delaware its “First State” moniker. The area’s collection of small towns as well as the natural beauty of places such as Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, provide

Kent County puts you right in the middle of the charm and excitement of “America at its Best.” ATTRACTIONS Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is a 16,000-acre haven along the Delaware Bay coast east of Smyrna, with salt marshes, ponds, fields, and forests. Visitors come from all over the world to see the variety of migratory shorebirds and waterfowl that stop to feed at the refuge, an important feeding stop on the Atlantic Flyway. OUTDOOR ACTIVITES The Delaware Bay, just East of Dover, offers some of the best fishing and crabbing in the region. The bay serves as a breeding DOVER AIR FORCE BASE Dover Air Force Base is important to the country’s defense, as it represents one-fourth of the nation’s strategic airlift capacity. Approximately 7,000 people are stationed at the DAFB. Dover is home to 36 giant C-5 Galaxy cargo planes, which are used to transport troops and equipment wherever they are needed around the world. The C-5 is the largest airplane in the U.S. military. Each plane is nearly as long as a football field, and could carry six motor coaches in its hold. The base cargo terminal known as the “Superport” is the largest anywhere in the US military, processing more tons of cargo than Kennedy airport in NY. The Air Mobility Command (AMC) Museum on the DAFB has over 24 aircraft on display, and features more multi-engine aircraft than the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC. Veteran aircraft on display include a C-47 “Gooney Bird” that dropped paratroopers over Normandy on D-Day.

The area also features firstrate golf courses, bike trails, scenic paths, boating, state parks, conservation areas, lakes and greenways. EVENTS The Old Dover Days Festival has existed in one form or another in the capital city since 1933. It is held on The Green and Legislative Mall, two beautiful outdoor parks in the historic downtown district. Traditional elements and new components bring in thousands of visitors each year with attendance reaching 15,000. Old Dover Days is a celebration of the First State’s Capital City and features a parade, maypole dancing, food court, re-enactors, walking tours, free entertainment and much more. The Amish Bike Tour, African-American Festival, Delmarva Folk Festival, Jazz & Blues Festival, Diamond State BBQ Championship and Wyoming Peach Festival are other events that bring thousands to Central Delaware each year.

The Johnson Victrola museum is a tribute to Delaware’s native son, Eldridge Reeves Johnson, who founded the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1901. Exhibits include phonographs, recordings, memorabilia, trademarks, objects, and paintings that highlight Mr. Johnson’s successful business enterprises and chronicle the development of the sound-recording industry. In 2004, under the leadership of Board Chair Dr. Scott D. Miller (President of Wesley College), a strategic alliance was formed to partner the resources of Wesley College, Delaware State University, and The Friends of the Capital Theater, to maximize usage and position the historic treasure as the premiere performing arts center south of Wilmington. In January 2007, the relationship was formalized with the three becoming equal partners in the operation, management and programming of the Center.

ARTS & CULTURE The Greater Dover is rich in arts and cultural activities. The Schwartz Center for the Arts, of which DSU is a partner, is one of the premier performing arts venues in the state. From live performances, films and special events, to meetings and receptions, the Schwartz Center offers something for all tastes. The Dover Symphony Orchestra is a regional organization founded in 1967 and comprised of professional and amateur musicians of all ages.

DOVER INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY Dover Downs International Speedway hosts two NASCAR Sprint Cup/Nationwide Series race weekends each year. Dover has the largest seating capacity (140,000 seats) of any sports facility between New York and the Carolinas. The “Monster Mile” has challenged many professional drivers as they compete for the checkered flag. The concrete track with 24 degree banking is the first and only concrete superspeedway in NASCAR history, providing awesome racing action. NASCAR weekends at Dover are typically scheduled for the second weekend in May and the fourth weekend in September. Qualifying takes place on Friday, Nationwide Series drivers race on Saturday, and the Sprint Cup stars race on Sunday. Dover Downs, along with nearby Harrington Raceway, also features top flight harness racing.
