DELAWARE STATE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

SEASON OUTLOOK

Looking to bounce back from a injuryriddled 2013-14 campaign that ended with a 8-21 overall finish and a 3-13 mark in conference action, the Delaware State women’s basketball team is aiming to turn heads under third-year head coach Tamika Louis, despite being picked to finish 12th in the MEAC Preseason Poll. Notable non-conference wins for the Lady Hornets last season, however, featured victories at Manhattan (80-69) and a 9083 overtime triumph over the Atlantic 10’s George Mason.

RETURNERS

Topping the list of returnees for DSU is guard Raven Bankston, who is looking to build on one of the best single-season performances in program history. As a freshman, the Detroit, Mich. native, earned All-MEAC Third Team and AllRookie Team recognition, while leading the Lady Hornets and finishing second in the conference in scoring (21.3 ppg). Bankston also set a new DSU singleseason scoring record for most points (595).

Heading into the 2014-15 season, DSU returns six letterwinners, including three starters. However, the Lady Hornets will have to fill the void left by guard/forward Deanna Harmon due to graduation. Throughout her four-year career, Harmon appeared and started in more than 100 games, in addition to sitting in the top 15 in the DSU all-time record books in assists, steals and rebounds. Scoring wise, she fell four shy of becoming the 16th player in team history to tally 1,000 career points. Forward Tierra Hawkins, who missed 14 games in 2013-14, including the final 12 due to a season-ending shoulder injury, is aiming to continue her dominance as one of the best post players in the conference.

Leading the Lady Hornets in assists the past two seasons, the Las Vegas, Nev. native, set a new DSU single-season mark with 126 in 2013-14. Career wise, Washington currently sits sixth on DSU’s all-time assists list with 230. The backcourt also returns sophomore Raine Bankston and junior N’Kayah Kersey. Bankston, who started the first

Kersey, on the other hand, led the Lady Hornets in 3-pointers made (33) as the only returning player to appear in all 29 games last season. Providing depth and length in the frontcourt is sophomore Mi’Queara Lewis, who appeared in 26 games, including 14 starts.

#4 Jade Washington NEWCOMERS

Leading the way for the newcomers are upperclassmen Amber Bogard and Nikkei Blackburn. Both listed as forwards, Bogard sat out last year after transferring from Eastern Michigan, where she was a two-year letterwinner. Blackburn, meanwhile, comes to DSU from the junior college ranks by way of South Georgia Tech. Last season, she led the nation in rebounds (13.4 rpg), in addition to being selected as one of the Top 40 Student-Athletes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
