Art and conservation are synonymous with the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF). Founded by wildlife artist, David Shepherd CBE to give something back to the animals that helped establish his name as an artist, the Foundation has raised almost £8 million for conservation. David Shepherd has inspired wildlife artists around the world and this year we are bringing together guest artists who have been inspired not only by David but by this annual international art prize. Their contrasting styles appeal to a wide range of art lovers and will excite great interest in the art world. The Wildlife Artist of the Year competition that forms the central focus of this week, provides an amazing opportunity to browse and buy original pieces from established greats to up and coming artists. This magazine gives you a glimpse of what’s on show and who won this year’s coveted title. We’ve stepped up our fundraising in 2015 with a magnificent life-size tiger entitled ‘Prince of India’ by British artist, Richard Symonds. The sale of this amazing oil painting will help fund tiger conservation work in India, Thailand and Russia. Lastly, but by no means least, check out the celebrity tigers - original tiger sketches and paintings for sale by auction in support of the Foundation’s TigerTime campaign working to save tigers in the wild.

Wildlife Artist of Nick Mackman, a sculptor based in Okehampton, Devon was named the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundations’ (DSWF) 2015 Wildlife Artist of the Year at a prize-giving event at the Mall Galleries in London last night(June 29). Nick accepted the £10,000 top prize from wildlife artist and conservationist, David Shepherd CBE and DSWF CEO, Sally Case. Commenting on the winning piece – a collection of ceramic warthogs, judge - artist and gallery owner - Hazel Soan said: “The piece by Nick Mackman demonstrates her consistency of form and wonderful characterization and individuality she moulds as if from the African earth to create such wonderful, living sculpture.” Nick Mackman is an award-winning sculptor of ceramic and bronze animal sculptures. She has been widely exhibited and is a regular contributor to the Wildlife Artist of the Year Exhibition. She has accepted commissions from British Airways and the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. Her commissions have ranged from a small Bornean frog to a life size bronze cheetah. Nick has spent many hours studying her subjects and regularly travels to observe animals in the wild. This enables her to capture the personality of her subjects, allowing the viewer a rare appreciation of the beast, its beauty and its humour. Commenting on her win, Nick said: "I am over the moon to win the Wildlife Artist of the Year competition. It's a privilege to be able to contribute to such a fantastic exhibition that not only celebrates wildlife art but also raises much needed funds to help conserve the animals we all cherish. The incredible diversity and beauty of the animal kingdom is a
constant source of inspiration for me. I have a great affection for warthogs, who are some of Africa's most engaging beasts, so I was delighted to win the competition with my warthog sculptures." Prince of India Wildlife artist, Richard Symonds has been actively involved with raising money and awareness for wildlife through the sale and auction of his original paintings, drawings and limited edition prints for 22 years. His paintings include life-size tigers, lions, and elephants. Following in the footsteps of long-term family friend and inspiration, wildlife artist David Shepherd, Richard chose to concentrate on wild animals in their natural habitat. He has been fortunate to travel to many corners of the globe from the USA, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe in search of wildlife. He has exhibited at Christie’s in London and New York, Sotheby’s, Harrods, banks and private galleries in and around London and his work is found in private and corporate collections worldwide. In 2005 Richard completed and sold his first life-size pencil drawing of a tiger at Christie’s raising funds for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation’s conservation work. “It feels fitting that 10 years later I am now painting another life-size tiger for the charity and their TigerTime campaign,” says Richard. Prince of India is based on a photograph taken by Michael Vickers (www.tigersintheforest.com) another DSWF / TigerTime supporter. “This is T2 or the Chiroli Male who once reigned over a huge territory in Ranthambore National Park, India. He sired many cubs including the current large male known as ‘Romeo’. T2 died of natural causes two years ago and it is wonderful to see his legacy live on in this painting by Richard Symonds with proceeds from the sale supporting vital tiger conservation work,” says Michael.
